You just need to take small steps in a healthy direction and that begins by knowing the healthy choices! Then it gets easier to make choices every day that help keep you healthy. Effects of Congenital Heart Defects In the US, more than 35,000 babies are born with congenital heart defects every year. Although some heart defects are not detected until later in life, these problems with the heart have already formed by the time a baby is born. There are many types of congenital heart defects, ranging from mild to severe. These problems can involve the heart's walls or valves or the arteries and veins that supply blood to the heart and other parts of the body. Some heart defects are simple and can be left untreated, but others are a lot more complex and require medical attention shortly after birth. However, even children with complex heart defects can live an active and normal life thanks to medical advancements that have improved treatments for congenital heart disease. In the United States there are more people over the age of 20 with congenital heart disease than people younger than 20 because of the improvements in surgery and follow-up care. Treatments for some heart defects, however, could lead to an arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat. Some heart defects can also cause high blood pressure, which increases children's risk for heart disease.

1. Love your heart If your heart is healthy it will be able to work for a very long time.It is up to you to keep your heart healthy. 2. Exercise every day You need to exercise your heart by making it work harder for at least 30 minutes a day. Any type of sport will help and make your heart a lot healthier. 3. Eat a healthy diet Too much fatty food will block up the arteries with fat and your heart will have to work harder and harder just to do its regular job of pumping blood round your body. You should educate your kids to learn about the foods their body needs and what their heart likes. 4. Spend less time sitting still Take a break while watching TV, playing computer games or doing your homework. Get up from your seat and move around. 5. Make good choices as you grow older You can choose not to smoke, not to take illegal drugs and not to drink too much alcohol. Children should be forming good habits now so they don't have to break bad habits later on.Parents should play a key role in ensuring that their children are living a heart-healthy lifestyle. It's not just kids in isolation — it's the whole family. Young people should be exercising, eating a healthy diet, and making sure they don't smoke. Those are things that can last a lifetime and will help prevent heart disease.
