District Governor’s Letter

From the District Secretary

Dear friends: The last District programme was a keenly-participated and an efficientlyorganized event. Kudos to all the participating clubs for the wonderful show of talent. Congratulations to the organizing committee and the members of the District cabinet. In keeping with the view expressed about Onam, I particularly like the school of thought which marks Onam as an event where King Mahabali gives up his attachment to his wealth, power and virtue. This thought is in line with our focus of making the Y’s Men’s Movement a movement of generous people. Let us celebrate Onam every year to remind ourselves to engage our resources not only for our fulfilment but also for that of the needy people around us. This will make our membership truly meaningful and our life really worth living. The District has been on the move. During the first quarter we spent a lot of energy in getting all the club officers installed and in organizing the first District programme, the Onam celebrations. It is heart-warming to see our members get energized for the district programmes. I want this energy to translate into action for the growth of the movement in our district in terms of extension, image-build-

The period between the last bulletin and this one has seen a number of Y’s activities at the District level. The first council meeting was held in August with one of the highest attendance rates seen in any council meeting of our district. Ninety-two members, majority of them being club office-bearers attended and this signifies a deep interest in the activities at the district level. A very informative and practical training session led by Ym Koshy Mathew, our Chairman for Training & Communications, was of great help to all. This was followed by group discussions on District projects, Extension and membership conservation,

ing and fellowship. Let’s do big projects which will enhance the image of our movement. We have been in touch with the presidents of all the clubs and the District cabinet members constantly with a view to take Y’sdom to the next level. Much is expected of the leadership of the clubs and the District this year. We are looking for extension of Y’sdom not only in Bangalore but also in other parts of Karnataka. To begin with, we have sufficient leads and expression of interest from friends and relatives in Mysore, Coorg and Tumkur. I am sure you may be aware of at least one family who you would like to get the benefit of being in the movement. I want you to look at your relatives, friends, colleagues or business associates who are either residing there or know someone residing there. Please make a list of such people and get in touch with us. Let us galvanize our efforts to make Y’s Men in Bangalore vibrant and strong. Wishing you and your family happiness and prosperity during the festival of lights and throughout this year. Ym Louis Paulose District Governor

and District Celebrations were lively and focussed. ONOTHSAVAM 2011, held on 25 September, also saw record participation of member-families and their guests, with over 400 onam sadyas being served. On behalf of our Cabinet I thank the main sponsors, Associates Developers and Hindustan Academy and all the clubs who contributed monetarily by sponsoring banners and prize money and by participating in large numbers. We would also like to thank the clubs for their keen participation and cooperation. A word of special thanks to Ym. M.V. Vijayan, Chairman of Organising Committee, for his able leadership and professional approach in making this event a grand success. Contd. overleaf

Editorially Speaking I am happy to present the second issue of our District bulletin for the year. I am indeed pleased to inform you that my appeal for news and reports met with good response so much so that I had to battle for space to include all of them. I feel I have done justice to the contributors and have depicted quite a few of them. I am not going into the details of the District events because they have been covered in detail by the

District Secretary. The details of the District Onam celebrations are presented by Ym Vijayan in his write-up. The menettes page too is full and I thank the contributors to this page. Let me conclude by saying, keep up the tempo and start collecting information and photos for the next issue. In Y’sdom Ym Koshy Mathew Bulletin Editor

From the District Secretary (from previous page) On the project front, serious spadework is going on. The ‘Support a School’ project will be launched in November 2011. Many schools have been identified and teams from our district will be inspecting them shortly to ascertaining their needs. We thank Ym Ashok Mathews Phillip, President of Bangalore Club, for the ground work done by him for this project. Our menettes have jointly taken up a project to help a needy cancer patient and have started collecting funds for the same. The first instalment was handed over on the day of our Onam celebrations. The District Sports events are coming up; the badminton tournament will be held at the KBA on 01 November 2011 for which we have booked four courts. The Track & Field events will be held on 13 November. We are sure that these events will also draw the same response and enthusiasm as the other two events held this quarter. In all we can say that the last three months have been hectic and rewarding for our team and we are sure that the coming months will be more so. Ym Raju P.U. District Secretary

Menettes’ Page Be a Better Person Ymt Esther JebaKumar

Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong, Because sometimes in our lives we would have been all of these ourselves – Lloyd Shearer Kindness is a language the deaf can hear and the blind can see. It is better to treat a friend with kindness while he is living than display flowers on his grave when he is dead. Each of us is invited to live a magnificent life, a life of substance and distinction that changes the world for those around us. A successful person makes a contribution to the betterment of the world just by being in it. He leaves a path for others to follow. It is good to do greater things but it’s even better to teach others to do great things by letting them follow your lead. A successful person leaves a legacy and inspires the next generation to go further, rather farther, dream bigger and achieve more. Here is a parable of the Pencil that will help you put all these things in perspective. In the beginning, the Pencil Maker spoke to the pencil saying, “There are five things you need to know before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and you will become the best pencil you can be.” 1. You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand. 2. You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but this is required if you are to become a better pencil. 3. You have the ability to correct any mistakes you might make. 4. The most important part of you will always be what’s inside. 5. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write. You must always have a clear, legible mark no matter how difficult the situation. The pencil understood, promising to remember, and went into the box fully understanding its Maker’s purpose. Now replace the pencil with yourself; always remember the five points made by the maker of the pencil, and you will become the best person you can be. 1. You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in God’s hand, and allow other human beings to access you for many gifts you possess. 2. You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various problems, but you’ll need this to become a stronger person. 3. You will be able to correct mistakes you might make-and grow through them. 4. The most important part of you will always be what’s on the inside. 5. On every surface you walk, you must leave your mark. No matter what the situation, you must continue to serve God in everything. And never forget, everyone is like a pencil … created by the Maker for a unique and special purpose. Understanding and remembering these, proceed with your life on this earth, having a meaningful purpose in your heart

and a daily relationship with God. Go forth in the joy of the Creator, knowing how blessed you are. Celebrate the beauty of nature around you. Celebrate the goodness of fellowship with others. Celebrate the challenge of each new day. Most of all: Celebrate your life. How blessed you are! Menettes and Cancer Care

The Y’s Menettes of Bangalore District II had decided to respond to the Area President’s Project – “Cancer and Palliative Care” – when they met in August. In keeping with that decision, they collected Rs. 40,000 to help a 45-year-old widow battling breast cancer. The picture above shows Dr. Thomas Chandy, Guest of Honour at the Onam celebrations, handing over the cheque on behalf of the Menettes District Committee, coordinated by Ymt Leena Kurian (to his left) to the nephew of the beneficiary.

The Law of the Seed Take a look at an apple tree. There might be five hundred apples on the tree, each with ten seeds. That’s a lot of seeds. We might ask, “Why would you need so many seeds to grow just a few more trees?” Nature has something to teach us here. It’s telling us: “Most seeds never grow. So if you really want to make something happen, you should better try more than once.” This might mean: You’ll attend twenty interviews to get one job. You’ll interview forty people to find one good employee. You’ll talk to fifty people to sell one house, car, vacuum cleaner, insurance policy, or idea. And you might meet a hundred acquaintances to find one special friend. When we understand the ‘Law of the Seed’, we don’t get so disappointed. We stop feeling like victims. Laws of nature are not things to take personally. We just need to understand them - and work with them. In a nutsell: Successful people fail more often. They plant more seeds. District Onam Celebrations and Inter-Club Meeting, 25 September 2011 Onothsavam 2011 started bright and early at 7.30 am on 25 September with the Pookalam competition in which 10 teams took part. This was followed by a lively chenda melam recital which brought the venue alive. The grace and elegance of the dancers from four teams entranced the audience with their enchanting Thiruvathirakali performance. This was followed by the Naadanpaatu competition which brought the visuals and music of Kerala live to the audience by six teams. These competition items were interspersed by non-competitive items – a Bollywood dance extravaganza by the young and chirpy dancers of Symbiosis Y’s

Youth Club and a dance-drama by the youngsters of the Northwest Club based on a poem by Sri Murukan Kattakad. Highlighting the problems in our society, this was very much appreciated by the audience. The Inter-Club Onam meeting was preceded by an invocation dance by our Talent Extraordinaire, Y’s Ling Roshni Joseph of Downtown Club, who gave an exhilarating Bharatanatyam performance. The Chief Guest at the Onam meeting was Cine Actor Sri Babu Antony and the Guests of Honour were Dr. Thomas Chandy, noted orthopaedic surgeon and Chairman of Hosmat Hospitals, and the Regional Direc-

tor of SIR Ym N. Ramesh. I take this opportunity to thank our DG who reposed his faith in me to co-ordinate this crucial event in our district. I also express my thanks to the financial support of the main sponsors - Associates Developers & Builders and Hindustan Academy – and the support by various clubs by way of sponsoring prizes and by underwriting the expenses through greeting-banners.
