Editor’s Note I am happy to be associated with the Editorial Team that was responsible for this year’s Area publications, which, in the beginning of the year comprised three products – the first issue of Y’s Times, the directory of Area Officers and ASDs and the pocketbook of their telephone numbers and e-mail IDs. And, during the course of the year, we published three more bulletins. This is the last product I would be engaged with for the Area Team before we lay down our office on 26 June 2011. I immensely enjoyed my involvement for it enhanced my understanding of what the Y’s movement is all about and what we are capable of doing. I take this opportunity to thank my senior editor Ym KC Samuel for giving me the latitude to work on the assignments entrusted to us. In no lesser measure should I also name and thank Ym T.M. Jose who has been instrumental in helping me access information whenever I felt the crunch. Supremely, I am deeply indebted our Area President Ym Philip Mathai for giving me an opportunity to be of service to the movement in the larger context. Let me also thank all Regional Directors, ASDs and District Governors who I contacted for newsfeed for the bulletins and other publications. I will not claim that this product/publication represents the true image that Y’sdom carved out in India during this year. There are several gaps and shortcomings, which can be attributed only to the daily busy schedules that all of us have. Nevertheless, it’s a template that can be improved upon. Our Founder

Judge Paul William Alexander (1888-1967) Paul William Alexander was the pioneer, founder, and first President Emeritus of Y’s Men International. He was born on 8 December 1888 in Toledo, Ohio, USA and graduated from Dennison University and Harvard Law School. After several years in private practice, he became judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts of Lucas County, where he served until his retirement. In October 1920, the young attorney, Paul William Alexander, along with 17 ardent YMCA workers formed a Booster Club within Toledo YMCA and named it as Tolymca Club. Later, when membership increased, he drew a constitution and suggested that the name be changed to Y’s Men’s Club. Soon after, the first Club outside the USA was born and the movement became international. In November 1922, the International Association of Y’s Men’s Clubs was formed, with Paul William Alexander as the first International President. In 1962, the International Board adopted 8 December of each year for the celebration of Paul William Alexander’s birthday as the Founder’s Day, and the accompanying emphasis on Alexander Scholarship Fund. Judge Alexander remained an active Y’s Man leader and President Emeritus until his death on 29 June 1967. 3

Thank You, Friends It was with great pride, responsibility and humility that I took office as the 26th Area President of India Area on the 27th of June 2010. Today, a year later, we are at the end of our journey together. Looking back at the year, there were moments of great pride and achievements and some moments of regrets. However, on the whole, it has been a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable journey and I wish to thank each and every one of you who made it special and memorable. We started the year with our stated goals and projects of ‘Go Green’, ‘Adoption of poor but brilliant students’, ‘Membership Conservation’ and ‘Extension of Y’sdom to unexplored parts of the Area’, over and above the local service activities of the clubs, districts, zones and regions. While we were hugely successful in some of them and made good progress, we made only little progress in some others. The ‘Go Green’ project was well received and appreciated by the community. I am happy to note that our clubs whole-heartedly took up this project and made a real impact in their local communities. This project had real significance especially because, as a country, along with our growth, we are increasingly becoming high polluters. Our target under the Go Green project was planting 500,000 valuable trees, flowering and medicinal saplings in all the five regions. According to a report, one region alone planted 200,000 saplings. A total of more than 600,000 saplings of various species of trees and plants were planted, thanks to the sincere cooperation of private nurseries and the forest departments of various states. My sincere thanks to all concerned. Another service project close to my heart was the ‘Adoption of poor but brilliant students’. Again, I am delighted to say that, this was taken up by our clubs in all regions. One club alone adopted 30 such students. We are fortunate to have a very large percentage of our population under the age of 20 years, while more developed countries are struggling with an ageing population. But this advantage will count for nothing, if we do not nurture and educate them and arm them with the right skills. With regard to the growth of our movement in India, we have had some mixed results. Even though our aim of extending Y’sdom to the unexplored states in the Indian union largely remains unfulfilled, we managed to make a good beginning in Central India, by chartering 11 new clubs in partnership with local YMCAs. We also started new clubs in Bahrain and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. My hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the leaders who worked 7

tirelessly to make this happen. I hope that this is the start of a new trend and, with the support of the Area and Regional leadership, we will hear of a lot more success stories in the future. It is my wish that we have clubs in all the member-countries of the United Nations. Membership conservation was a topic we focussed a lot on this year. However, we could make only a beginning towards achieving this goal. I sincerely hope that all clubs would ensure that the membership as on 1st February is maintained in the first semester of the next year and further developed. Earlier in the year we witnessed the devastating fury of nature in Japan causing unprecedented damage. We were quick to extend our helping hands to our brothers and sisters by setting up an earthquake relief fund. We collected Rs. 200,000 and sent it to the international headquarters to be routed to Japan. I wish to thank each and every one of you who contributed whole-heartedly to this worthy cause, showing our generosity, care and affection for humanity across the globe. With the benefit of hindsight, we would all have done certain things differently, and it applies to my term as Area President too. But the important thing is to acknowledge our shortcomings and move on. I am sure that Yâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s men in India Area will stand united under our leadership, moving forward, scaling new heights. There are countless people who have helped and stood by me in this journey and I cannot thank them enough for their self-less dedication and service. I would also like to thank everyone who supported me during the IPE elections. Special thanks to my Area team, Ym T. Thomas (Area Secretary), Ym M. Isaac (Area Treasurer), Ym K.C. Samuel (Area Bulletin Editor), Ym Koshy Mathew (Area Associate Bulletin Editor) Ym V.K. Y’s Men International India Area has come to the close of another functional year. It is with a sense of deep appreciation to many who contributed much for the growth and development of Y’sdom in India and with a sense of satisfaction we present the activity report for the year 2010-11.

Theme and Slogan The Area President chose the popular scriptural verse “Be the light of the world” for his theme and his slogan was “Share our blessings in love.” 8

All project involvements were centred on these two and, judging from the response of the members, both the theme and slogan were well-received.

Leadership Training India Area conducted its leadership training for ASDs on 27 June 2010 at Ernakulam. Mrs. Monamma Kokkad, Past District Governor, Lions International, led the session and enlightened the participants on leadership qualities in service organizations. It was well-received by all the participants. Our special thanks to Mrs. Monamma Kokkad and Ym T.M. Jose, ASD-LTOD for taking the initiative in arranging this programme.

Mid-Year Meeting The Mid-Year Meeting of RDs and DGs was held at the Yâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Men Centre, Ernakulam on 05 December 2010. Programmes and projects in the Regions and Districts and membership statistics were reviewed and studied against goals set for the year. Both the Area President and PAP Ym. V.S. Bashir, who was present at this review exercise, complimented the RDs and DGs for their excellent performance.

RDs-Elect Training Programme The Area RDs-Elect Training Programme was held at the T&U Resort, Munnar from 04 to 06 February 2011. All the five RDs-Elect and their teams participated. We were privileged to have International President-Elect Ym Finn A. Pedersen, International Secretary General Ym Takao Nishimura, International Treasurer Ym T.M. Mathew and Past International President Ym V.S. Bashir as our guests of honour and to give critical inputs. 10

These international officers and other members of the faculty handled various sessions related to RDs assuming office and on how to draw up an effective plan of action to achieve the goals set by the International for India Area.

Youth Camp The Area Youth Camp was held from 27 to 30 December 2010 at the YMCA Youth Centre, Kanyakumari, in which 58 youth members from all the five Regions participated. The Camp was inaugurated by our Area President Ym. Philip Mathai. Sessions on important and relevant topics were handled by eminent faculty both from within and outside Yâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sdom. Apart from study sessions, the participants had opportunities to be exposed to neigh-bourhood realities and were treated to some entertainment, including camp fire. Our special thanks to PRD Yw. Susy Mathew, Yw. Beena George, ASD and Youth Camp Director, and to AYR Yy Meetu Sarah Thomas for their leadership and support.

DGs-Elect Training Programme: India Area DGs-Elect Training Programme was held on 26 and 27 February 2011 at Shilpa Retreat, Ayoor, Kollam.

by the Area and Region constituted the contents of the inputs. Needless to say, they were received well and rated high.

Membership Statistics This year, the Area leadership gave importance to membership conservation over growth, which, in recent years, was not a healthy one. In view of this, several clubs that have been reporting one member each have been de-chartered. Some new clubs have been formed to make up the loss in numbers. In this context, we are happy to report that India Area has retained it position as the largest Area in Y’sdom with membership strength of over 10,000. Area Projects The two projects proposed by the Area President, namely, “Go Green” and “Adopt a poor but brilliant student” were received well both by the clubs and the public in general. They have, undoubtedly, contributed to enhance the image of the movement in the society. Reports from the RDs indicate that our goal of distributing and planting 500,000 saplings during this year has been surpassed by at least a hundred thousand. We credit this to the enthusiasm of our members and the cooperation of various institutions. We are happy to report that the forest department of various states took an active role in this drive. Again, reports from RDs show that the adoption of poor but brilliant students was a success. Some clubs have already been engaged in this, and this year’s focus has helped them to reinforce their commitment. It is heartening to note that one club adopted 30 such students, with each of its members being responsible for at least one student. The dream of establing an Area Office was accomplished after getting unanimous consent of the International Council and necessary staff was appointed with funds raised by the Area team. 11

Other Area projects like establishing charity shops and payment to Y’s Menettes International Projects, and cancer care projects of Regions were also carried out by many clubs.

Contributions to International Projects Area India has been able to make significant contributions to various international projects, thanks to the keen participation of all members from the club level. This year we have enrolled 15 Honour Roll Members, and 198 PWAFs, thereby making a combined contribution of Rs. 17,09,700 towards the Endowment Fund. Apart from the Endowment Fund, we have contributed the following amounts to: Roll Back Malaria

Catastrophe in Japan The devastating earthquake followed by Tsunami in Japan on 11 March this year certainly has been one of the worst tragedies the world has witnessed in recent decades. Latest reports say that more than 24,000 people were either killed or are reported missing. Properties worth millions of dollars were also destroyed. Our Area President, on behalf of India Area, conveyed our condolences and expressed our sorrow and sympathy to concerned leaders in Japan and at the IHQ. To further express our solidarity with the people of Japan, Y’s Men India Area made an effort to raise US$ 10,000 (approx: Rs 5 lakh) towards relief and rehabilitation work in Japan. Although we have not reached our desired goal, we have been able to send Rs. 2 lakh as part payment of our commitment. India Area records its special thanks to all those who made personal contributions, both big and small, in response the Area President’s special appeal under the theme “Gambare Nippon!” (Do not give up Japan!).

India Area’s total remittance to the International on account of International Projects and Programmes stands at Rs. 26,69,135. We also need to be aware of the fact that while our contributions to the International have been good, we are not doing our best. During this year 7 clubs in our Area received Rs. 18,21,010 to implement TOF projects. It is time we reexamined our balance of payments and receipts. Our since thanks to all donors for actively participating in the international efforts. 12

Visit of International Leaders During the year International President-Elect Ym Finn A. Pederson and ISG Ym Takao Nishimura visited India in January-February of 2011. Apart from providing inputs at the RDsE training programme at Munnar, they visited several TOF and club projects in Kerala and Hyderabad. Their presence has enriched the Area with newfound zeal and enthusiasm, especially among the incoming team of RDs.

Visit of BF Delegates

Publications

Area Service Director for Travel Coordination, Ym T.S Varghese, in his report informs that India had three offers to send BF Delegates during the year. Only one could go, while the others declined or cancelled their trips.

In the course of the year the Area published three issues of the bulletin, “Y’s Times,” which were released at the Area Convention (in June 2010), and at the Area Council Meetings in Hyderabad (October 2010) and Chennai (March 2011). The fourth issue for the year would be released during the last Council meeting for the current year on 26 June 2011 at Ernakulam.

India Area was scheduled to host three sets of BF delegates during the year. Of them, there has been no response from one, while one couple from Korea was with us in December/ January of 2010-11, and the other couple from Australia is currently in India. Ym Kim Young Moon and his menette arrived in Trivandrum on 14 December and departed on 05 January 2011. They were hosted by leaders of SWIR, MWIR (where they spent most of their time) and by Club and District leaders in Chennai before they left India on 05 January 2011. Our Area President hosted them while they were in Cochin. Ym Russel Jones and Yw Jennifer Jones from the YService Club of Adelaide, Australia arrived in Bangalore on 05 June 2011, and were hosted by SIR RD Ym Jacob Varghese. They also attended the Regional Conventions of South India and South West India Regions. At the time of compiling this report they are visiting clubs and projects in MWIR and MIR and will attend the Area Convention and allied events on 26 June before they fly back to Australia on 27 June.

Apart from the bulletins, the editors of the Area for the current year – Ym KC Samuel and Ym Koshy Mathew – produced the Area Officers/ASDs Directory and the Pocket-book of Telephone and E-mail IDs of Officers and ASDs. We place on record our profound thanks to Ym Samuel and Ym Koshy for the timely and professional inputs they made. A good job well done!

AP’s Official Visits During the current Y’s year the Area President visited various clubs in the Area including those in the Gulf Zone. He was immensely pleased with the club activities and the various projects undertaken by them. His visit motivated the clubs and gave a fillip to the leaders and members of the clubs.

We are thankful to the Y’s leaders for the hospitality extended to these BF delegates, which, we are sure, has gone a long way in building a positive image for Indian Y’sdom and in fostering international goodwill.

Election to the International We are immensely happy and proud that our Area President Ym. Philip Mathai has been elected to the post of International PresidentElect for the Y’s year 2011-12. He will be installed IP at the International Convention in Stavanger, Norway in August 2012 for the term 2012-13. Finance I will not labour to apprise you of the finances of the Area as it is the specialised job of the Area Treasurer, Ym M. Isaac. Needless to say, we are on safe grounds as of now, all because of the meticulous handling of accounts and finance by our Area Treasurer. To Ym Isaac we place on record our special appreciation and thanks.

In conclusion, all that we can say is we have done our best to uphold the values and principles of the movement through our programmes and projects. In case there have been shortcomings, they were purely due to factors beyond the realm and control of the team that ran a good race. We are sure that the new team that will be taking over soon will take the movement to greater heights and glory and firmly establish the primacy of Area India in Y’sdom. TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DUTY THAT ACCOMPANIES EVERY RIGHT At your induction into the movement we want to stress and remind you of our purpose and objectives and what it means to be a Y’s Man. Our purpose states clearly our overall concern: “The International Association of Y’s Men’s Clubs is a worldwide fellowship of persons of all faiths working together in mutual respect and affection, based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and with a common loyalty to the Young Men’s Christian Association, striving through active service to develop, encourage and provide leadership to build a better world for all mankind.” “Based on the teachings of Jesus Christ” means “that Y’s Men acknowledge what Jesus Christ has taught and that the acceptance of the teachings leads Y’s Men to be prepared to put His words into action. They become guidelines for Y’s Men’s decision-making, for Y’s Men’s mode of operation as clubs and as an international association and for the way of life of Y’s Men as individuals.” If you are ready to acknowledge our purpose and its meaning and serve under this purpose with loyalty: say Y E S You have joined a club which works, thinks and plays in an atmosphere of SERVICE IN ACTION. Service which the Y’s Men’s Club gives arises from six objectives: 1. To function primarily as service clubs for the YMCA. 2. To support other worthy organisations. 3. Various organisations have various requirements. Some require business prominence, some social standing, some intellectual 79

attainment, some athletic prowess, and so on. We may find all of these in Y’s Men, but we also find unselfishness of character. TO BE A Y’S MAN MEANS TO BE LOYAL TO THE YMCA. Y’s Men understand that the YMCA is what its name implies: an association, a union of persons acting together for a common purpose. The secretaries are professionals, trained specialists who are employed by the YMCA to supervise its work, and the buildings are instruments to facilitate the accomplishment of some of our common aims. Next to the church, the YMCA is the greatest character builder in the world. Next to the day schools and colleges, it is one of the greatest educational factors, and it is a world leader in physical education and development. It has few rivals in breaking down the vicious barriers erected by diverse creeds, castes and cultures throughout the world. It is a leading foe of international and inter-racial injustice, and thus a powerful factor for world peace. The central purpose of the Y’s Men is to support the activities of the Young Men’s Christian Association and other worthy organisations by personal service and united effort. TO BE A Y’S MAN MEANS TO BE WORLD-MINDED. In many cities of Europe, Asia, Africa, South Pacific and the Americas, there are brother Y’s Men’s Clubs. We hold that “The measure of a man is the breadth of his horizon”. One who is indifferent to international or interracial injustice, who is so immersed in local affairs that he is not interested in other lands or peoples, whose horizon is limited by the narrow confines of his own domain—such a person does not measure up to the standard of the Y’s Man, whose horizon is worldwide. TO BE A Y’S MAN MEANS “TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DUTY THAT ACCOMPANIES EVERY RIGHT”. This motto was adopted by the Y’s Men because of the tendency of most people to insist upon full enjoyment of all their rights while remaining oblivious to the corresponding duties giving validity to such rights. Our motto is a constant challenge to us to pay less heed to the enforcement of our rights and more to the discovery and discharge of their corresponding duties—to transfer the emphasis from rights to duties. TO BE A Y’S MAN MEANS TO BE ENTHUSIASTICALLY ACTIVE. “Enthusiasm” is derived from the Greek “en” meaning “in” and “Theos” meaning “God”. An enthusiast is a person with God in him. The enthusiastic activity of the Y’s Men means a continuously inspired activity. If this is the basis upon which you seek your membership you will signify by raising your hand and answering I W I L L thereby pledging your devotion to the ideals and purposes of the club. Having made this public avowal, I am gratified to pronounce you Y’s Men—which is, being interpreted, Men of and for the Y—and I welcome you, on behalf of all Y’s Men everywhere, to this worldwide fellowship.

The Inaugural Charge To be elected to Executive Office in the Y’s Men Movement is an honour. It is a great honour. It is a greater honour than to be elected to office in many other organisations. It is a far greater honour than to be elected to many public offices. For, in suc h cases, the candidates seek their own election, and the office goes to the most successful vote-getter. In our movement, since the beginning, it has been the unwritten rule that the office should seek the candidate rather than the candidate the office. Thus your election is evidence, not so much of your vote-getting ability, as of the confidence of your fellow Y’s Men in your qualifications for office. And to qualify for office in our movement imposes a rigid test upon any person. Many qualities are demanded and expected of you by the fellow members whose votes have made you an officer. To enumerate them all should not be necessary, but we shall specify four, each commencing with the letter “I”. I D E A L I S M is the first. Your fellow members expect you at all times to exemplify the highest type of idealism, to display undeviating devotion to the purpose of the Y’s Men Movement, to bear unswerving allegiance to our foster parent, The Young Men’s Christian Association, in all its many phases of activity. I N T E R E S T is the second. Among your various interests the welfare of the Y’s Men Movement must rate first - not third, nor even second. Only thus can you fulfil your obligation to make ours a first-rate organisation. While it is important that the general membership place Y’s Men first, it is absolutely imperative that every officer do so. To the extent that you allow other matters to relegate Y’s Men to second or third place among your interests, Y’s Men will become a second or third rate affair. I N I T I A T I V E is the third. You are expected to exercise initiative. This means that you are to develop ideas and put them into operation; to formulate plans and execute them; to be the proponent and not merely the follower of suggestion; in short, to be always “starting something” ... and then carrying it through to a successful conclusion. I N D U S T R Y is the fourth. You are expected to be industrious: in other words, to work. No task shall be too great nor any detail too trivial to engage your effort. Your fellow members expect you to work untiringly even to the point of sacrificing leisure, recreation, social and occasionally domestic and business affairs. It is by virtue of precisely this sort of indefatigable industry that our movement has reached its present high plane. 81

In electing you to office your fellow members have expressed their confidence that you possess these four, and many other, qualities and will exhibit them throughout your term of office. That is why your election is so high an honour. How infinitely higher will that honour be when, at the close of your term, you have justified that confidence. The responsibilities of leadership can scarcely by overestimated. The progress of business, government and every sort of organisation, particularly of a voluntary idealistic movement such as ours, depends almost entirely upon the leadership. True, the leader cannot succeed alone. In our movement you must have the cooperation of every individual Y’s Man. But this cooperation cannot be won by mere solicitation. It must be earned. And the surest way for you to earn it is by exhibiting the qualities of leadership we have just mentioned. The trust reposed in you by your fellow Y’s Men is a sacred one. The manner in which you discharge that trust will determine whether their cause will go forward or backward, whether it will gain or lose, perhaps even whether it will live or die. Will you solemnly covenant with your fellow Y’s Men that you will, to the utmost of your ability, exhibit these qualities, which your office demands of you, and conscientiously discharge the sacred trust reposed in you by your fellow Y’s Men? If so, you will raise your right hand and answer in the affirmative. May Divine Providence aid and guide you and give you wisdom and strength, well and faithfully to discharge your trust.
