CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY | FALL 2021

THE CONCEPT

THE PROJECT In teams of three, students were assigned to create a CCRC in the Highland Park neighborhood of Des Moines, IA. Each member was responsible for designing a living unit Independent Living, Assisted Living, or Skilled Nursing - along with a specialty space. This portfolio will feature the Skilled Nursing unit, and the Greenhouse.

In this project we want to emphasize the idea of growing in place. CCRC’s typically have a negative connotation associated with them, but our project will show how this is not the end of their journey, but rather the beginning of a new one. Our facility will provide multiple ways for the residents to continue growing throughout their life. One way we will facilitate this is through resident led programs. These provide not only a sense of community, but also responsibility and purpose. The amenities will help emphasize the idea that our residents are here for a reason, and contribute to the greater good of the community. We will incorporate wood accents, muted colors, and natural light to instill a sense of comfort and familiarity. The space will emulate the design principles of balance and repetition. These principles enforce the intended feeling of our space.

GREENHOUSE ENTRANCE The Greenhouse provides an opportunity for residents to maintain old habits and hobbies, while creating a sense of community and responsibility. It will be entirely resident-led, instilling a sense of purpose into the residents, while also giving them an opportunity to give back to the local community.

07

GREENHOUSE INTERIOR The interior offers multiple accessible planting options - the planters in the middle are seating height and feature a 9 inch toe kick for wheelchair users to wheel up to, while the outer edges of the space provide standing work space for other users to enjoy.

08

SKILLED NURSING UNIT This living unit provides a sense of control and home for the resident. ADA requirements were carefully considered in this unit, as more help from the staff could be needed. The bathroom features a 67” turning space, ensuring safety and comfortability for all users.

09

SKILLED NURSING LOUNGE The skilled nursing lounge allows for space for residents to feel a sense of community within this CCRC. It’s also a room where family and friends can come to visit their loved ones - a crucial design consideration for the elderly. The updated craftsman style yields a homey and relaxing space to sit back and enjoy - while giving a sense of familiarity to residents.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE BUILDING

HIGHER EDUACTION | SPRING 2021

THE CONCEPT In this space, the students and faculty will feel at home. A sense of warmth and comfort will welcome anyone who walks into the building. Natural lighting, familiar colors, and multicultural artwork will fill the interior. Positive relationships will be fostered in this space, creating an overall sense of inclusivity and positivity. An appreciation and respect for all international cultures will be instilled into the design, making an open and enjoyable learning environment for all.

THE PROJECT In teams of three, students were assigned to redesign the Landscape Architecture Building on Iowa State Campus. The building will be used for international students working on their English skills. The goal of this project is to design for a newer age of education through thorough research. A complete set of construction documents was included with the project.

CAFE The cafe allows for students to take a break and recharge during their studying. It also provides a sense of support and comfort, as the cafe features food and drink from countries all around the world.

15

STUDENT LOUNGE The student lounge is an open and collaborative environment. Due to the location right off of the main entrance, it welcomes any and everyone into the space, and gives them a sense of belonging. More private and quieter study spaces are seen behind the lounge, giving students the sense of control and choice on what environment works best for them.

DOLCE & GABBANA FLAGSHIP STORE

HIGH END RETAIL | FALL 2020

17

THE CONCEPT Dolce & Gabbana was founded upon merging Italian culture with regional heritage to create a tailor-made experience in every location. The brand has drawn inspiration from the golden age of Italian cinema, the 1940s. When you walk into the store, it will feel as if you are transported to an Italian film set in the the 1940s. This place will embrace the beauty of the natural woman, and highlight the golden age of Italian History.

THE PROJECT Students, in teams of two, were to design a flagship store for a luxury retail brand. The store was located in Rome, Italy in the Piazza di Spagna. The brand identity of Dolce & Gabbana was researched thoroughly, and incoporated into the design of the store.

CUSTOM TILE

In the back of the men’s collection, a custom mosaic wall is featured. The wall is inspired from ancient Pompeiian ruins, a nod to the deep Italian history that is so important to Dolce & Gabbana. The custom tile is another reference to historic Italian landmarks - a pattern deriving from the floor of the Duomo.

BEAUTY ROOM This room offers the full on movie experience - a customer can sit and get their makeup done by a professional, all while feeling as if they are the star of the movie. The beauty room creates the luxury experience that high end retail offers.
