Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution

STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale What do you intend to do and why? I intend to produce 6 Illustrations for a special edition re-release of the book, ‘The Book Of Fortune Telling’ by Agnes M. Miall. The six illustrations will include a design for the front and back cover of the book, and then five accompanying illustrations for the start of specific chapters. I would then like to extend the application of my images onto product that would accompany the re-release of the book, in particular possibly looking at a tote bag/book bag, posters and possibly a pin badge. The application could also be spread across POS stands for the book and or promotional material such as window displays. In context, I am proposing the book would be published by Folio Society and be available on their website. The introduction of an accompanying promotional package would be available in bookstores such as Waterstones and would be a limited gift to customers that purchased the first 50 copies of the book. This could also be something that is only available via pre-order. I have chosen to produce this work and apply it in this context as it overlaps to of my areas of interest, the occult and book illustration. The theme of the book lines up with my own personal interests and I feel that I would enjoy creating work around the themes covered within this text. I also have enjoyed previously working with books and texts and creating illustrations based around these. I feel that combining a personal interest and a professional interest will allow me to produce a strong body of work.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include theoretical and noncreative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary Illustration practice. GENERAL THEMES: The Occult Divination Fortune Telling SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: I will be looking at specific elements of divination and fortune telling covered within the book I have chosen to illustrate. The elements include palm reading, card divination, crystal gazing and knife prophecies. I have chosen to illustrate these chapters in particular as I feel they are areas of interest that I will be able to work well with and will provide a variety of topics in order to give an over all feel of how the book could be if all the chapters were illustrated. I will be providing a general overview of fortune telling and divination in order to create a cover for the book that encompasses all that is contained within it. I will then begin to combine specific elements, imagery and symbols in order to create a pattern for the end pages. The original copy of the book was published in 1972 so I feel that redesigning the cover and providing illustrations for the inside would revitalize the dated imagery that is already used on the book.

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production/ distribution of work in response to selected briefs?

SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: I will be focusing on Adult Publishing and creating a cover design for the book and also internal illustrations for end pages and the starts of new chapters. I will also be considering how my imagery can be applied to merchandise in order to promote the re-release of the book. AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: My primary audience would be adults but I also feel like young adults/teenagers could be interested in the contents. I will be trying to create imagery that I feel could appeal to this audience, primarily adults but that could also appeal to slightly younger people. I feel that my audience would also include people who have an existing interest in fortune telling, but also to people that are looking to learn about these topic. PRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION METHODS: As an end product, I will be producing illustrations that I can propose to be the front cover of the book, and at the start of each chapter. I will also be looking at applying to product such as a tote bag, poster and pin badge that will accompany the book on purchase. This will promote the re-launch of the book and the set could possibly be accompanied with designs for a POS stand. The book would be published via Folio Society and distributed via their website and other bookstores such as Waterstones. CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: Folio Society – Special Edition Books – Illustration Based Design – Distribution Penguin – Contemporary Book Covers – Distribution NoBrow – Contemporary Illustrated Books – Distribution Marissa Johnson – Shape – Colour – Texture Kelsey Oseid – Shape – Texture – Line – Mark Making Lisa Perrin – Shape – Line – Colour – Book Design CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project? What do you intend to use the skills for? Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

Digital Skills – This is a method that I am currently learning how to use to enhance my practice. I feel that I want to approach this module from a digital perspective in order to be able to experiment more with this medium. Layout Skills – I feel that working to specific formats is something that I haven’t experience much. Using a book as my main format will mean that I need to consider measurements, spacing and bleed as well as typography and how this fits around my images. Print Techniques – I would like to possibly be able to go down to the print room and experiment more with lino and mono printing as a way of image making. This may not be possible but it’s still something that I’d like to explore further. Professionalism – I feel that I have made a lot of progress this year in terms of the professional quality of my work, this is something I wanted to continue to push whether in terms of process, production, presentation or application.

KEY TEXTS List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and nonpractice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites.
