“Architecture should speak for its time and place, but yearn for timelessness” - Frank Gehry

Culture is a way of life practiced by certain group of people. It forms the identity of the society. It is dynamic and adapted to change. Architecture is the physical manifestation ofthe culture practiced. In today’s time of globalization and internationalism, cultural representation in architecture has become all the more important to prevent monotonous environment and maintain diversity. Mattancherry was once a famous spice trading center. People from all over the world came to do business, exchange spices. Many settled and made their home in Mattancherry. Over the due course of time Mattancherry got left behind in the process of development, it had become stagnant due to shift in trade and increase in business opportunities outside of Mattancherry. The quiet streets, the abandoned warehouses that was once the origin of the city and the people who made it their home is waiting for the missing bustle. Hence, the thesis intends to propose a cultural hub that bring together the communities of Mattancherry and showcase the image of Mattancherry promoting its culture locally and globally.

Communities of Mattancherry

The area was once bustling with trade and commerce with unique typology of buildings. It speaks about the busy and happening past of Mattancherry. Many of the buildings remained intact without any particular method of conservation, but over the past decade the buildings have deteriorated to a great extent due to urbanization and negligence. Increase in tourist influx due to the Kochi Muziris Biennale has provided a ray of hope in reviving the lost bustle of the city.

“One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time it is like life starting all over again.” - Renzo Piano

The name “tatva” means elements in sanskrit and as the name indicate, the hotel design is developed by incorporating the five elements of life, ‘Panch-tatva’. Through this synthesis, the hotel intends to provide a feeling of connection between the inside and outside of the building for its users. The hotel is sited in Indian International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC),Dwarka, having convention hall and exhibition halls nearby with pedestrian friendly zones. The voids in the builing intends to break that barrier betweem the inside and outside so that the guests would be able to enjoy the activities and recreations from within the hotel, thus eliminating seclusion. The landscaping provided within the hotel provides the guest with the leisure of experiencing nature despite being inside the buildng and observing different aspects of the hotel from a perspective at a time.

The spatial planning is done in such a way that all rooms have sufficient daylight. The inner courtyard consists of a mini indoor forest that is inaccessible in order to symbolise the necessary preservation of nature and also provide a natural ambience and contrast against the white built spaces. The void is placed at different sides of the building and at different levels to enable users to observe different aspects of the buildings standing at one place, providng natural surveillance. They are also used to break the rigidity of structure and increase visibilty to the outside.

“The on-going Covid pandemic has rendered the migrant labourers in the country unemployed and difficult to fill up a plate with food for a day. They are caught in a hell loop where they can’t go back to their home state nor can they stay where they are, due to unemployment. Chehal is a temporary homestead for these migrants to help cater their basic needs during such crisis. It is designed to help migrants feel at home, bringing together various migrants together into a common space with shared amenities for inclusive community living to remotely compensate for them not being able to return to their homeland. The community is designed to be compassionate, resilient and economical. The construction materials and techniques used are cost effective, modular and easy to erect, thus catering to the temporary stay of the migrants. Nevertheless, it also provides waste and water management facilities to build a selfsustaining community.

“Architecture is how the person places herself in the space. Fashion is about how you place the object on the person.”

-Zaha Hadid

About 92 million tons of textile waste is generated by fashion industry annually. Behind the granduer and embellished clothing we see on the runway, tons and tons of clothes are been wasted. Milan is one of the world’s fashion capital and producer of clothes. Despite that pride, the pavilion intends to show and create awareness about this generated waste that can be reduced. It is juxtaposed in Park Sempione, Milan, amidst the greenery and its traditional architecture to create a triggering effect to its users. Thus ,using architecture as a medium, a social awareness about textile waste, how it can affect our nature and surroundings and its piling amount is visually demonstrated.

This is a renovation project of the client’s ancestral house. It is a 5BHK house located in the hilly terrain of Padamugal, Kakkanad, Kerala, India. It is a budget friendly project and has both interior and exterior renovations handled by two different contractors. The client wanted a simple and homely interior and a tropical modern outlook to its outdated ancestral house. The house has teak wood and antique furnitures. The challenge was to reuse these exisiting furnitures and furnishings and give them a modern look. Work is done on the interior and front elevation of the house. There is a interesting palette of warm materials like clay jaalis, banana fibre mats, wood etc. to achieve the outcome. The construction is still ongoing and moulding to form.
