For art, literature, and the city. A new magazine and exhibition series investigating the roles of artists and writers in public process. “Summer in the metro is almost over. Bohemia is fantasy, planning is myth, farming is urban, civics is a hobby, and development is still king. This is Civilian #1, and we give to you 132 pages of newly threaded text-styles for art, lit, and urbanism. For our first issue, we traveled not by road, but by ordinance, by school system, by diseased river, by underground fiber, and by the vibrancy trenches. In the contest for a city, we didn’t set out to glorify the artist and writer in the social worker; we wanted to find out what they are in for.
Led graphic design and art direction, researched critical texts on socially engaged art and urbanism. Made possible in part by a Charlotte Street Foundation and Spencer Museum of Art Rocket Grant and by a Rauschenberg Foundation SEED Grant.

Open Plan
graphic design furniture design installation
Reading, display, and work space for “Composite Structures” at La Equina Gallery. Tables and benches depict two scales: the geographic-spanned by Route 66–home to the mutations of midwest architecture represented by the exhibition–and the standard measurement scale of a cutting mat–inviting creation and interaction from the audience. Commissioned for Composite Structures, an exhibition showcasing architectonic themes underlying the work of many Midwestern artists and exploring the “multiplicity of differing, conflicting, even contradictory currents on what can be salvaged from the Midwestern Modernist utopia.”

Zine Dream
graphic design marketing administration public programming pop-up retail installation
A pop-up reading room and workspace for Kansas City zine makers, comic artists, and self-publishers to linger, work, discuss and exchange. The first capstone event at Front/Space Gallery that presents a multi-month series that continues throughout and outside of the expected First Fridays arts festival timeline. The design of the reading room installation and accompanying ephemera maximized the expression of paper-like textures, including chipboard tabletops, composite wood steps, and shelving made from cardboard and reused pallettes.

MainCor & MSCID
graphic design marketing administration public programming grant writing
The Main Street Corridor Development Corporation (MainCor) and Main Street Community Improvement District (MSCID) are the leading and champion community partners of Kansas City’s Main Street Corridor, advocating for the renewal and vitality of Midtown. In addition to Program Management for MainCor from 2011-13, I designed a new identity for the two sister organizations, reflecting their joint roles as a cohesive center for urban renewal and shared community resources. In addition to the new identity, a responsive website was built to showcase the Main Street area, followed by a brochure sharing demographic and cultural information, a social media campaign launched at the completion of the Main Street Streetscape, and an expanded public events series marking a transition of the organization from a reactive problem-solver to a proactive placemaker.

The Center for Community E.A.T.S. COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT THROUGH AGRICULTURAL AND TRANSPORTATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY
10
The site is in the Woodlawn neighborhood at the northeastern edge of the South Side of Chicago. Just south of the University of Chicago campus, this area is known to be a threshold of neglect, with train stations torn down, drastic cuts in bus service, and extremely limited access to grocery stores. This community center addresses the food desert by combining agricultural training, retail, and gathering space. The three masses, each holding the primary space for community, education, and commerce, and provide a transition, physically between residential streets and major boulevard and more abstractly for a community empowering itself to provide its own healthy food options.
