The Maine Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction is very excited to welcome you to our 30th Annual Construction Expo of Maine. Due to your support this event has been able to grow tremendously over the last three decades. This year is no exception. In conjunction with our Construction Expo we’re excited to be hosting our 1st Annual Job Fair. We are confident the job fair will prove to be a beneficial opportunity for all participating companies, career centers, post secondary schools and job seekers. If you are new to the Expo, we trust you will find this entire experience rewarding. There are a number of Exhibitors on hand ready to provide you with the resources necessary to handle your next project. If you are a regular attendee, we hope this event continues to live up to your expectations. Our Construction Expo can provide you with a number of invaluable opportunities: seeking prospective manpower or employment interests; learning about the latest and greatest products available; and, most importantly, a chance to network with current or potential vendors and business partners. We are optimistic our show will help you better position yourself for a successful year in a difficult construction climate. Scholarship applications for the 2010-2011 school year are available at the NAWIC Booth. Any Maine student pursuing a post-secondary education in construction related courses is eligible to apply for $500 to $1,000 scholarships for one to four years. The deadline for submitting applications is May 1. For more information on this and future shows, please call Joyce Newman at (207) 622-3068 or email ConstExpoME@aol.com, and for scholarship information call (207) 623-4683 or visit our website www.NAWICMaine.org. We thank you not only for your support this year, but your support over the last 30 years!

30TH ANNUAL CONSTRUCTION EXPO OF MAINE More Than Three Thousand Will Attend.

A

By Joanne R ay nother year has passed and National Association of Women in Construction is getting ready for the annual Construction Expo of Maine. This year is special however, as the chapter celebrates a milestone – 30

years. At the show, more than 3,000 industry people will visit more than 175 booths inside the Augusta Civic Center on Wednesday, April 14 from noon to 8 p.m. and Thursday, April 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Expo is held simultaneously during Women in Construction Week, celebrated by NAWIC chapters throughout the country. Said to be the largest construction show in the state and organized by volunteer members, the expo attracts enough exhibitors to fill the center’s huge auditorium and lobby and also spills out over a two-acre area of the facility parking lot. Visitors attending the show will find a marketplace full of products, ser vices and industry professionals. Some of the vendors have been with the show since its inception. “ We have been expanding every year, and this year is no exception” said Joyce Newman, Executive Director of Maine Chapter 276 NAWIC. “ When we first started the Expo, less than 50 pieces of outdoor equipment were set up outside and filled over 160 booths inside. But, over the years, with hard work, dedication and a lot of fun, the event has turned out to be an annual celebration for vendors, attendees and NAWIC members alike.” In celebration of 30 years, a new event has been added. The Maine Chapter will be holding a Job Fair on Wednesday morning , April 14. Employers in the construction industry will have an opportunity to inter view and accept job applications from prospective employees. Additionally, community colleges will be present to describe the many construction related courses offered, that will help applicants in their pursuit of better jobs.

The 49,000 square foot Augusta Civic Center, conveniently located off exit 112 of major highway I-95, offers the space and support ser vices for the large group. The outside display will be in the lower parking lot again this year - visible when you ap proach the Civic Center from either access. “ The Expo Committee was thrilled to fill 44 individual spaces into the South Wing parking lot the first year of the Expo in 1981,” Newman said. “Soon though, the Expo outgrew that space and moved to the North Wing parking lot. About eight years ago, the exhibit area outgrew that space and we moved to the main parking lot. Although we haven't outgrown the main lot, we had to move to the lower parking lot due to fresh pavement in the main lot. This actually alleviated the parking situation for attendees.”

NAWIC was formed in 1955 with the purpose of enhancing the success of women in the construction industry. In 1979, the Maine Chapter was formed with 34 members. Today there are two chapters in the state covering Kittery to Presque Isle with the Maine Chapter serving central and southern Maine. In June of 1981, the NAWIC Maine Chapter sponsored the first Construction Expo of Maine, which has become an annual event. Members of the Maine Chapter are diligent in looking for programs that will benefit the construction industry. The show is an excellent way for contractors and public works officials to learn about the latest technology and equipment designed to make their jobs easier. A number of seminars and workshops will be available both days of the show. Featured this year, in addition to large numbers of construction equipment for contractors, the show will offer maintenance equipment used for the upkeep of roads and other infrastructure by state and municipal officials. The show will offer a diversity of products including excavators, loaders, material handling equipment, crushers and screeners, sweepers, and snowplows. Equipment dealers, rental houses and truck dealers will present exhibits that include numerous offerings. Other exhibits will include power hand tools, surveying equipment, pressure washers, tires, brakes, springs, and equipment hydraulics. All kinds of building products will be featured including pre-cast concrete items, standard and insulated concrete forms, structural and reinforced steel, concrete repair products, cement and ready mix concrete and compost and erosion control products. Building construction products will also be displayed such as ladders, scaffolds, cranes and rigging. Other displays will feature waste oil furnaces, laser leveling equipment, office trailers, leaching systems, water distribution products, radio communications, cell phones, construction, traffic and street signs and pressure washers. Service features include the latest in excavating and grading, general contracting, asphalt paving, drilling and blasting, landscaping and hydro seeding. Also displayed will be tool rentals, installing and repairing brakes, supplying cranes and rigging, delivering fuels, supplying personnel, insurance and bonding, consulting engineering, and equipment financing. Construction Expo of Maine has been the vehicle for the Maine Chapter to award thousands of dollars in scholarships to young men and women from Maine pursuing careers in construction related fields. Any Maine resident enrolling or already enrolled in a construction related program at a community college or university is eligible to apply.

Since the inception of the program more than two hundred students have received $500 or $1000 a year, for one to four years. Scholarships are based on scholastic achievement and financial need. Awards are also given to people making a career change or returning to the work force. The group sees this as an opportunity to help someone who is trying to improve their knowledge and skills and gain employment in the construction industry. This year the group intends to award about $20,000 in scholarships to between five to eight students. Visitors to the expo are greeted by colorful “ Women in Construction” banners suspended about the perimeter of the large exhibition hall. These are sponsored by a number of corporations and are part of Women in Construction recognition in Maine. Additional education related efforts of the chapter include maintaining liaisons with other construction associations and promoting programs of the national organization NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF). Home study construction related and safety courses are available through NAWIC’s Education Foundation through its website at www.NAWICEducation. These courses are accredited by Clemson University in South Carolina where the NEF office is now located.
