elcome to the 35th year of the Maine Chapter 276 National Association of Women in Construction’s (NAWIC) Construction Expo of Maine. We are thrilled to have you here with us celebrating 35 years of bringing the Construction Expo to Maine. We have spiced things up for this special anniversary with a “new look” in both our marketing and our floor plan lay out. For our marketing this year we have adopted a new, redesigned look in all of our print advertising as well as initiating some internet marketing strate-

Visit Tim Seymour, Darling’s Commercial & Fleet Sales Manager, at the Construction Expo of Maine. Tim is passionate about trucks, vans and just about anything else that has a motor. He also knows a great deal when he sees one. Get to know Tim and get a great deal on your next commercial vehicle.

gies ahead of the event with the goal of spreading the word. Our new redesigned floor plan accommodates a new area for the AGC reception, which is held prior to the Build Maine Awards Meeting. Last year’s reception was a success and we are pleased ACG will be hosting their reception in the exhibition hall again this year. Additionally, we have scheduled an amazing Key Note Speaker and a panel of construction leaders to round out the exciting list of changes. We are also please to be bringing back those events that were favorites among attendees such as the MUST/Dig Safe spring training program, and the CDL Competition put on by Westbrook Regional Technical Center, and Presby Environmental’s Spring Training. Other exhibitors will also be sponsoring thrilling new demonstrations and seminars. Our Annual Job Fair is back again this year as well. Building on the success of last year’s event, we have almost 20 major and small general contractors, and

temporary employment agencies participating. With more room still available, this year’s job fair promises to draw in a diverse group on both sides of the employment table. NAWIC will also have scholarship applications for the 2015-2016 school year. Any Maine student pursuing a post-secondary education in construction related courses is eligible to apply for $500 to $1,000 scholarships for one to four years. The deadline for submitting applications is May 1. Please stop by the NAWIC booth to pick up an application. If you would like more information on how to get involved in this year’s show and job fair or on future shows, Joyce Newman is the current Executive Director for the Construction Expo. She can be reached via phone at (207) 530-0353 or email at ConstExpoME@aol.com. You can also contact me directly if you have any questions about NAWIC; Bethany Martin (207) 485-1653, email: bmartin@asmg.com. Our chapter has been very busy this

past year. We have spent a lot of time redesigning our web site to give it a fresh new look. Plus we have been involved in community outreach, fundraising, and educational growth for women in the construction industry. Check us out a www.nawicmaine.org. We look forward to spending time with you during the Construction Expo at our NAWIC Maine booth. If we can do anything to make the event more beneficial for you, please do not hesitate to let us know. Thank you very much for your support.

T

he 35th annual Construction Expo of Maine promises to be a very memorable milestone. Members of the National Association of Women in Construction Maine Chapter are planning some very exciting events, and have adopted a “New Look”!! In celebration of the 35 year milestone, this seemed to be an ideal time to make some changes. Last year, AGC Maine accepted NAWIC’s invitation to join them in the exhibit area for their reception hour prior to their Build Maine Awards Dinner Meeting. Exhibitors and AGC members all welcomed this change, and it will be repeated this year. The list of partners holding major events in conjunction with the Expo is growing every year, with the return of Westbrook Regional Technical Center conducting the Dick Dolloff Memorial CDL Championship Wednesday morning, April 15. The CDL Competition consists of basic state competition level skills and maneuvers including pre-trip inspections. The skills will measure the participant’s ability to control the vehicle through a course of cones. The pre-trip inspection. Not only is this an opportunity for students from statewide vocational and community college students to demonstrate their skills, but it’s also an opportunity for employers to hire well trained drivers. Joining them are Maine MUST/Dig Safe holding their annual spring training program Wednesday morning, and Presby Environmental Spring Training. Details of these events, and the AGC Maine meeting, can be found in this program

and on the Construction Expo of Maine page on the www.NAWICMaine.org website. These partners bring in hundreds of attendees who will have the opportunity to visit with the exhibitors. Attendance at the show is expected to be about 2,500 large and small general contractors, specialty contractor, engineering consultants, public works and other government agency representatives. The 160 inside booths and almost 2 acres outside at the Augusta Civic Center are expected to be filled to capacity! Show hours are 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, April 15 and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Thursday, April 16. The Maine Chapter will be expanding on their Women in Construction Banners as an extension of Women in Construction Week, celebrated by NAWIC chapters throughout the country. The Chapter goal is to have enough banners to stretch around the entire perimeter of the auditorium. Said to be the largest construction show in the state and organized by volunteer members, the expo attracts enough exhibitors to fill the center’s huge auditorium and lobby and also spills out over a two-acre area of the facility parking lot. Visitors attending the show will find a marketplace full of products, services and industry professionals. Some of the vendors have been with the show since its inception. “We have been expanding every year, and this year is no exception” said Joyce Newman, Construction Expo Executive Director and active member of Maine Chapter 276 NAWIC. “When we first

started the Expo, less than 50 pieces of outdoor equipment were set up outside and about 140 booths inside. But, over the years, with hard work, dedication and a lot of fun, the event has turned out to be an annual celebration for vendors, attendees and NAWIC members alike. The Maine Chapter will be holding a Job Fair on Wednesday morning, April 15. Employers in the construction industry will have an opportunity to interview and accept job applications from prospective employees. Additionally, community colleges will be present to describe the many construction related courses offered, that will help applicants in their pursuit of better jobs.

with 34 members. Today there are two chapters in the state covering Kittery to Presque Isle with the Maine Chapter serving central and southern Maine, and the Eastern Maine Chapter serving Waterville north. In June of 1981, the NAWIC Maine Chapter sponsored the first Construction Expo of Maine, less than two years after becoming a Chapter in 1979, and it has become an annual event. Members of the Maine Chapter are diligent in looking for programs that will benefit the construction industry. The show is an excellent way for contractors and public works officials to learn about the latest technology and equipment de-

The 49,000 square foot Augusta Civic Center, conveniently located off Exit 112 of major highway I-95, offers the space and support services for the large group. “The Expo Committee was thrilled to fill 44 individual spaces into the South Wing parking lot the first year of the Expo in 1981,” Newman said. “Soon though, the Expo outgrew that space and moved to the North Wing parking lot. About eight years ago, the exhibit area outgrew that space and we moved to the main parking lot.” NAWIC was formed in 1955 with the purpose of enhancing the success of women in the construction industry. Equipment dealers, rental houses and truck dealers will present exhibits that include numerous offerings. Other exhibits will include power hand tools, surveying equipment, pressure washers, tires, brakes, springs, and equipment hydraulics. Building construction products will also be displayed such as ladders, scaffolds, cranes and rigging. Other displays will feature waste oil furnaces, laser leveling equipment, office

trailers, leaching systems, water distribution products, radio communications, cell phones, construction, traffic and street signs and pressure washers. Service features include the latest in excavating and grading, general contract-

Also displayed will be tool rentals, installing and repairing brakes, supplying cranes and rigging, delivering fuels, supplying personnel, insurance and bonding, consulting engineering, and equipment financing. Construction Expo of Maine has been the vehicle for the Maine Chapter to award thousands of dollars in scholarships to young men and women from Maine pursuing careers in construction related fields. Any Maine resident enrolling or already enrolled in a construction related program at a community college or university is eligible to apply. Since the inception of the program more than two hundred and fifty students have received $500, $1000 or $1500 a year, for one to four years. Scholarships are based on scholastic achievement and financial need and total over $300,000 in awards so far. Additionally, earnings from a $100,000 Maine Community College Trust Fund is available to women enrolled in construction related courses.

Awards are also given to people making a career change or returning to the work force. The group sees this as an opportunity to help someone who is trying to improve their knowledge and skills and gain employment in the construction industry. This year the group intends to award about $20,000 in scholarships to between five to eight students. Visitors to the expo are greeted by colorful “Women in Construction” banners suspended about the perimeter of the large exhibition hall. These are sponsored by a number of corporations and are part of Women in Construction Week recognition in Maine. Additional education related efforts of the chapter include maintaining liaisons with other construction associations and promoting programs of the national organization NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF). Home study construction related and safety courses are available through NAWIC’s Education Foundation through its website at www.NAWICEducation.org. These courses are accredited by Clemson University in South Carolina.

Construction Recognition Program Continues to Grow Since 1996 The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Maine has promoted a peer review process that selects the best construction projects of the year. Chartered in 1951, the Associated General Contractors of Maine is the state’s largest construction industry trade association. The Association maintains an office in Augusta and has over 180 members statewide. Member companies include general contractors, sub-contractors, and service and supply providers. Awards are separated by the type of construction project: Building/Renovations, Highway/Bridge, Industrial, Municipal/Utility and Specialty/Subcontractor. Judges have discretion in the selection process and may decide to grant an award to more than one project in each category. What is unique about the awards is the selection process and ability for firms large and small to compete on the same stage based on the merits of the project completed the previous year. The process is simple. Contractors who believe a project was worthy of an award submit an application to AGC Maine by the deadline,

this year February 27, 2015. The application process is not difficult, but the competition over the years has grown. Contractors spend resources taking photos, videos and documenting projects from start to finish. Project winners are celebrated at the AGC of Maine meeting held at Construction Expo organized by the Maine Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). AGC Maine provides winners with on stage recognition following a dinner with 300 members of the industry, press and media releases, and features in the Chapter magazine “The Blueprint”. Applicants are encouraged to visit AGC Maine’s website at www.agcmaine.org or contact the office by phone at 207-622-4741. Let’s Build a Stronger Maine Together!

News Flash! Maine’s Governor Paul LePage will be speaking at Construction Expo of Maine on Thursday, April 16 at 10:00 am Details will be available on www.NAWICMaine.org and the Construction Expo of Maine Facebook page as soon as plans are finalized.
