Super Bowl Guide - Page 7
Super Bowl XLII Super Bowl XLII the biggest NFL game of all time. We have a New York team in the Giants, from the biggest city in the US. We have New England, the best franchise in this millennium, making their 4th visit to the Super Bowl in 7 years. We’ll have superstars QB’s Eli Manning vs. Tom Brady, WR’s Plaxico Burress vs. Randy Moss, and on defense Osi Umenyiora and Michael Strahan vs. Teddy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel. The star power and the popularity of these teams will create the most watched game in NFL history.
The Giants are coming off 3 impressive playoff road wins, going through Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay. In fact, the Giants had to beat the #1, #2 and #4 seeds in the NFC to get to the Super Bowl. The key to the Giants success, only 1 turnover in their 3 playoff wins.QB Eli Manning is playing the best football of his career. In his last 4 games, including the week 17 loss to the Patriots, Manning has 110.1 passing rating, has thrown 8 TD’s, and has only 1 interception. On defense, the Giants have a great defensive line which is crucial against this Patriot offense. The Giants lead the NFL in sacks with 53 on the year. Of those 53 sacks, 40.5 sacks came from their front four.
As for the Patriots, everyone knows about their 18 game win season and their chance of perfection. But this team has been brutal against the spread of late. They have not covered in 5 games and are 2-8 ATS in their last 10. While they’re winning games, they’re simply not blowing teams out like they were to start the season. A lot of that can be blamed on the weather and the conditions they’ve been playing in.
What it all comes down to: IS WHO WANTS IT MORE?

Super Bowl Guide - Page 8
Latinos are finding success in the NFL
Kansas City’s Tony Gonzalez holds the NFL record for most career touchdowns by a tight end and might be a future Hall of Famer. He welcomes being a role model for other Latinos. Paul Kitagaki Jr. / pkitagaki@sacbee. com Sitting in his Los Gatos living room, the television tuned to the “Monday Night Football” game between Dallas and Buffalo, Joe Kapp felt a certain kinship with Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. And it was more than a former signal caller feeling for another enduring a rough game. “I’m a Romo fan, even though Dallas is hard to get up for, right?” Kapp said with a hearty laugh. “I felt simpatico for him. I threw four interceptions in a game once, too, so I wanted to send him a message, let him know he’d be fine.” The communiqué could have been sent in English or Spanish. Kapp and Romo, you see, represent the evolving and swelling wave of Latinos playing in the NFL. Both have a single parent of Mexican ancestry. Kapp, embodies los padrinos, the godfathers, who broke so much ground generations ago, while Romo and la nueva sangre, the new blood, blaze fresh trails by continuing to buck stereotypes and instill pride in Latino communities, where football was far from the first choice of sports to play. “It was always soccer, baseball, boxing,” said Kansas City’s Tony Gonzalez, who recently set the league record for most career touchdowns by a tight end. “Now that football’s become more popular, you’re going to start seeing a lot more players of Latin descent.
And it’s great; I love it. “We’re not just kickers anymore. It’s across every position.” Don’t get carried away, though. Mariachi music is not heard in NFL locker rooms, nor is salsa or merengue. It’s just that the NFL’s small population of Latinos is fast becoming household names and Pro Bowlers – Romo, Gonzalez, San Diego defensive end Luis Castillo and former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia, currently enjoying a renaissance with Tampa Bay. The NFL has listed 24 Latinos on rosters this season, and those figures do not include Raiders running back Justin Fargas, whose father has Puerto Rican blood, and New England’s third quarterback, Matt Gutierrez from Concord’s De La Salle High School. Of course, as Gonzalez would tell you, the caricature of a Latino football player long has been that of either a scrawny kicker or slovenly lineman. But of those 24 proclaimed by the league, only two were kickers, with five on the offensive line, four linebackers and pass catchers each and three quarterbacks among their ranks. In 1989, there were but seven Latinos in the NFL, and most were kickers. But while most generalizations have some factual basis, Latinos have been branching out on the gridiron for decades. “They always said (Latinos) can’t run,” said author Mario Longoria, who penned “Athletes Remembered: Mexicano/Latino Professional Football Players, 1929-1970.” “That no longer applies; it never did.” Consider: Rick Casares led the NFL in rushing in 1956 with 1,126 yards for the Chicago Bears. Kapp was exiled to Canada for nine years when an NFL team would not take a chance on him. He subsisted on tortilla-filled care packages from his mother, Florence Garcia. His profile in perseverance helped him lead Minnesota to Super Bowl IV. Kapp, still the last to throw seven touchdown passes in an NFL game, was Sports Illustrated’s cover boy on July 20, 1970, the magazine labeling him “The Toughest Chicano” the summer after the Super Bowl loss to Kansas City, whose backup
quarterback was Tom Flores. Yes, that Tom Flores, the original Raiders quarterback who later would become the first Latino head coach to win a Super Bowl – twice. And he did it both times with a Chicano quarterback in Jim Plunkett. In the same manner “Fernandomania” galvanized Latinos in the early 1980s, Flores and Plunkett did similar things for the inclusive Raider Nation. “It makes more sense now,” said Flores, who won Super Bowls XV and XVIII. “There was so much going on in what we were doing (at the Super Bowl) and trying to accomplish something like that, regardless of ethnicity, no one made that big a deal out of it at the time. “I didn’t even realize Romo was (Latino) until he started playing well and someone pointed it out and I just said, ‘Oh yeah, son of a gun, he is.’ “ Plunkett also made history by winning MVP honors in Super Bowl XV. “I’m very proud of my heritage,” he said. “Growing up a poor Hispanic kid in San Jose whose parents were on welfare and blind, my success may have helped an awful lot of people. People see what we accomplished, so it’s like, We did it, so can you.” It was far from easy. “Being a Mexican in a professional locker room, you took the brunt of everything,” Plunkett added with a laugh. “You had no help. The blacks picked on you, the whites picked on you. No help at all.” What kind of ribbing did Plunkett endure? “Oh, no,” he chuckled, “stuff not suitable for print. It was all in good fun, though.” The NFL recently recognized Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting the Sept. 23 game between the Cowboys and Bears, putting Caballeros and Osos on the TV screen scoreboard and launching a Spanishlanguage television campaign. “Monday Night Football” is broadcast in Spanish on ESPN Deportes, Sunday night games on NBC are available via SAP, and NFLatino.com is filled with Spanish content. Two years ago, the 49ers and Arizona played a regular-season game in Mexico City. “Our Hispanic fans are a large and growing part of our fan base,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail. “We recognize that Latinos now comprise the nation’s largest and fastest-growing minority group. Serving Hispanic NFL fans will continue to be an important priority.”
It makes good business sense. A survey by the Vidal Partnership, an independent Hispanic marketing communications agency, found 72 percent of U.S. Hispanic adults follow the NFL, despite only 1.4 percent of the league’s players being Latino with just two on the sidelines, San Diego inside linebackers coach Ron Rivera and Philadelphia offensiveline coach Juan Castillo. And although offensive tackle Anthony Muñoz is credited as being the first Latino in Pro Football’s Hall of Fame, Tom Fears, whose mother was of Mexican heritage, and Ted Hendricks, whose mother was Guatemalan, also are in Canton. Gonzalez took a shine to Muñoz when growing up and welcomes being a role model. “ Whether you like it or dislike it, it’s a reality,” said the former Cal star, who has spent time in San Miguel Allende near Mexico City to reconnect with the culture and language of his forefathers. His cultural awakening also has transformed him into one of the league’s top Latino ambassadors. “To me, you better take it as a responsibility because there’s a lot of kids looking up to you.” Especially since he’s on track to become the fourth Latino in the Hall of Fame. “We’ll see,” he said with an inhibited laugh. “I hope.” Muñoz recently visited NFL headquarters and told the league – which housed only 30 Latinos from 1929 until the NFLAFL merger of 1970, according to Longoria – to expect more in the coming years. Reasons for the dearth of Latinos range from genetics – “If you saw me among my peers when I was growing up, I was a foot taller than them,” Plunkett said. “I don’t know why.” – to lack of economic opportunities for college – “I used to hang from an apricot tree growing up in Salinas to get taller,” Kapp said. “I knew to play professionally I had to go to school, and to go to school I had to be a better athlete, which meant being bigger.” Said Longoria: “You see a lot more brown faces in football uniforms in Division I.” That translates to more potential pros. Case in point: USC quarterback Mark Sanchez. “I know how to spell orgullo,” Kapp said of the Spanish word for pride. “I don’t speak Spanish all that well. But some say I don’t speak English as well as I should or ought to either.” The Toughest Chicano and his brethren’s deeds have said enough, in any language. By Paul Gutierrez The Sacramento Bee

LEWIS BLACK
DODGE THEATRE SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2
Lewis Black, America’s foremost commentator on everything will bring his stand up comedy to Dodge Theatre on February 2. The show will begin at 8:00 pm with special guest John Bowman. Lewis is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs over 200 nights a year to sell out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and The United States. He is one of few performers to sell out multiple, renowned theatres including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In August 2007, he was the first stand-up comedian to ever perform in concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Lewis’ live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. Lewis yells so they don’t have to. A passionate performer who is more pissed off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon, he’s perfected expressing what the rest of us can not say in polite company. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. It’s no wonder he’s been compared to Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, and Bill Hicks. Lewis has taped four specials for the Comedy Central Presents series, co-created Last Laugh with Lewis Black and continues to perform Back in Black on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart . These popular appearances on Comedy Central helped to win him Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards in 2001. His first CD, The White Album, was released in 2000 to much critical acclaim. He received a 2006 Grammy nomination for Luther Burbank Performing Arts Center Blues and in 2007 won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for The Carnegie Hall Performance. In 2006, Lewis had a break out year as an actor. He co-starred with Robin Williams in Barry Levinson’s Man of the Year (Universal Pictures), appeared as “the fake dean of a fake college” in Steve Pink’s Accepted (Universal Pictures) and as the harried airport manager in Paul Feig’s Unaccompanied Minors (Warner Brothers). In addition, he lent his voice to the role of “Jimmy” in Bob Sagat’s parody, Farce of the Penguins (Thinkfilm). KATT WILLIAMS DODGE THEATRE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1
“Katt Williams is one of Hollywood’s most sought after comedians, touted as the next Richard Pryor” - Rolling Stone Magazine
Katt Williams, widely recognized for his role as “Money Mike” in the hit New Line movie Friday After Next, is currently on a multi-city comedy tour. The tour will make a stop in Phoenix to perform at Dodge Theatre on Friday, February 1. The show will begin at 8:00pm. Katt Williams’ talent extends over multiple mediums. Known to most for his breakout role in Nick Cannon’s highly-rated MTV improv show, “Wild n’ Out,” the funnyman has appeared in music videos for everyone from Outkast (“Roses”) and Ludacris (“Stand Up” & “Number One Spot”) to E-40 (“One Night Stand”) and Lil’ Kim (“Shut Up/Lighter’s Up”), in addition to landing roles on the small and big screen. Katt continues to receive stamps of approvals from the urban and mainstream community for his brilliance and ingenuity on screen and on-stage including being named “hottest new comedian” in Rolling Stone Magazine as well as praise from African American comedic icons such as Steve Harvey who says, “He’s one of the hottest comedians in the country.” In September 2006 HBO aired “Katt Williams: Pimp Chronicles Pt.1,” 60 minutes of hilarious new material from the entertaining comedian taped live in Atlanta with guest appearances from Cam’ron, Lil’ Jon, Snoop Dogg, Andre 3000, Da Brat and Anthony Anderson to name a few. To follow up that success Katt taped the sequel live in Chicago titled, “KATT WILLIAMS: AMERICAN HUSTLE” which was released on DVD on November 20, 2007. Katt’s prodigious talent seems to know no limits and he’s eager to add the title of ‘Hollywood Actor’ to his repertoire. This past February he lit up the big screen with an unforgettable role in the Eddie Murphy film Norbit (Dreamworks). Katt appears in the newly released romantic comedy, Perfect Holiday (Flavor Unit Productions) featuring Terence Howard, Queen Latifah, Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union. In addition Katt will star in the comedy Marshals (Dreamworks) along with co-star Eddie Murphy who will also produce the film. Stadium University of Phoenix Stadium
Arizona is proud to welcome Super Bowl visitors to a state-of-the-art football experience like no other. The innovative concept of University of Phoenix Stadium features the most modern technology, fan friendly amenities and a secure environment. As the first stadium in North America to feature a retractable roof and a roll-out grass field, the University of Phoenix stadium is the home of the Arizona Cardinals, as well as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Every four years, the facility will host the NCAA’s BCS National Championship football game. And of course, Super Bowl XLII will be played in University of Phoenix Stadium on Feb. 3, 2008. The stadium seats 63,400 for Cardinals games, but will provide approximately 10,000 more seats for Super Bowl XLII. The roof has two large retractable panels that uncover the entire playing field while providing maximum shading for fans. The roof can be closed and the facility air conditioned in the hot months, while the roof can be opened to take advantage of the Valley’s world-famous climate in cooler months. The grass field rolls out of the stadium on an 18.9-million-pound tray, residing outside of the stadium except for football and soccer events. With the field in the outboard position, the 158,000-square-foot floor is unencumbered by the turf and features a built-in utility grid. The grass field remains outside the stadium in the sun until game day, which allows for the maximum amount of sunshine and nourishment, eliminating humidity problems inside the stadium and providing unrestricted access to the stadium floor for events and staging. Completed in the fall of 2006 and built specifically to showcase Arizona’s next Super Bowl, this $455 million architectural wonder is the most advanced sporting facility in the world. The facility has been voted “Best NFL Facility” by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily. The stadium has also been named one of the Top 10 stadiums in the world by Business Week.

Arizona Cardinals Fullback Terrelle Smith Joins Arizona - Sonora Bowl II When Terrelle Smith played football at ASU nearly 10 years ago, he shared with a friend that if he ever went pro, he wanted to use his position to work with underprivileged kids and change lives.
Today, with eight years as an NFL player under his belt, Smith is making good on his promise.
The Arizona Cardinals fullback is taking a lead role in planning and promoting the Arizona-Sonora Bowl II, an Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee sanctioned event targeting kids and families who want to join in the Super Bowl excitement for no charge. “I’ve been involved with football camps for kids during other Super Bowls,” said Smith, still nursing sore muscles from the Cardinals victorious season closer against the Rams. “But this is different – instead of just getting a call to attend an event, I’m a part of something really big.” And big, it is. An international event scheduled Jan. 27, the Sunday before Super Bowl XLII, the Arizona-Sonora Bowl II pits youth teams representing the two states – one from the U.S. and one from Mexico. More than that, it includes morning clinics for selected underprivileged children, led by Smith, joined by Marvel Smith of the Pittsburgh Steelers and other NFL players. Area families are invited to enjoy the Cardinals Experience, a hands-on entertainment area similar to the popular NFL Experience, at no charge. Other activities include chances to meet the pros during an autograph session starting at noon, art, educational and environmental exhibits and family activities. Smith doesn’t want to be merely a figurehead for the event. He’ll be involved with some of the practices, with planning and being present the day of the event to do everything from teaching the basics of football to signing autographs and presenting awards. For him, it’s bringing a vision to reality. “Once I got signed with the Cardinals, I said, ‘let’s do it!’ in terms of finding something to do for the community,” he said. “We found this opportunity working with County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox and the Cardinals. You don’t realize how hard it is to put all the pieces together in planning an event like this, working with the people in Mexico and all. It’s a great thing going on here.” Smith sees the event as something much more than just a football game between youth representing two states in neighboring countries. “I want the spotlight to be on the kids who are involved with this, with the clinics and the events. They’re kids who haven’t been so fortunate in some areas of their lives. This event is also a great way to bring people from different countries together who don’t often get a chance to interact. I’m hoping this will open the eyes of people who don’t know much about the children we’re going to be working with. This event needs to impact more people’s lives than just the small group who are involved.” The Arizona-Sonora Bowl II is designed to strengthen relations and understanding between the two neighboring states, is sanctioned by the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, and put on by a partnership between the Arizona-Mexico Commission, Maricopa County, Comisión Sonora-Arizona and the Comisión del Deporte del Estado de Sonora. Supervisor Wilcox is chairing the committee. The event will be at Copper Canyon High School in Glendale. The first Arizona-Sonora Bowl was played in conjunction with Super Bowl XXX in 1996. Profits will benefit the Sports Ad-Hoc Committee of the Arizona-Mexico Commission, which serves to foster the cultural, physical, and personal growth among children and teenagers through sports exchange between Arizona and Mexico. For details, go to http://www.topete-stonefield. com/arizona-sonora-bowl.html. Facts about
