DON’T LET YOUR SCOTTIE GO ON STRIKE… TRAINING IS A CHALLENGE! The AKC Standard says, “The Scottish Terrier’s bold, confident, dignified aspect exemplifies power in a small package... a determined and thoughtful dog whose ‘heads up, tails up’ attitude in the ring should convey both fire and control.” The Scottie’s independent streak occasionally can hamper the training procedure. Scotties do like to gratify their owners, but merely up to a certain point, and then they can swiftly become bored to death with working on the identical exercise over and over again. With the appropriate training techniques, patience, and consistency, your Scottie dog will be able to learn just about everything you would like to teach him. Originally called the Aberdeen Terrier, the Scottish Terrier was developed in the rocky Highlands as a hunter of badger, fox and vermin. Scotties have a strong mind of their own. They must be disciplined at an early age that they are not the King of the world. The toughness that makes them admirably able for killing vermin can annoy you when you attempt to teach them anything. Terriers are well-known to be stubborn and dominant – they want to be the BOSS – and will force you to prove that you CAN make them do any given thing. You must demonstrate to them, through unconditional consistency, that you mean precisely what you say.

Jaunty, Self Reliant And Unafraid
Friendly and playful when he is a puppy, the Scottish Terrier matures into an audacious, jaunty, yet balanced and dignified adult, with a more superior sense of independence than most terriers. He is steadfastly self-reliant and unafraid, but also can be grim and crusty at times.
A Daunting Watchdog Steadfastly devoted to his owner – some are one-person dogs – and aloof with strangers, the Scottish Terrier makes a daunting watchdog. He should be taught “social skills” with lots of people at a young age and not allowed to be snappish. He can be quarrelsome with other dogs. Page 14 of 66

Not A Dog For A Lenient Owner Training is a challenge, for no dog breed has higher self-esteem or a stronger willpower – your Scottie is not a dog for a lenient owner. Firm, unswerving leadership is a must, and obedience instruction should be praise- and food-based, for the Scottie is proud, tremendously sensitive, and easily offended. He may even the score or “go on strike” if yanked around or pushed too far with forceful handling or teasing. The Scottish Terrier is happy with daily walks and he is not built for long-distance jogging.
Lighthearted, Jovial Enthusiasm! But you will soon find out that he will take off after squirrels and chipmunks – and CA TS! – with lighthearted, jovial enthusiasm.

Choosing a Dog Training Book, Specific To Scotties But Great Overall Does your Scottie need a good beefing up on his social skills? Does he act inappropriately? Is he a downright BRAT? Those are just a few of the questions many people are answering in dog training books. Hundreds of people are writing books on dog training – for every breed – as it is such a big market.
Many people struggle to train their dogs on their own and there are people who love the fact that they can make a profit out of this need. I’m not saying that it is wrong to write a dog training book and charge for it, as that is what I am doing right here! Many People Need Guidance When It Comes To Teaching Their Dog Basic Training There are people writing dog training books that have never actually owned a dog and the nonsense they chitchat is quite funny… but then you get the serious writers. People that have had about 30 years of dog training experience are putting their knowledge onto paper and making it available to the whole world, which is fantastic. Many people need guidance when it comes to teaching their dog basic training and books are a great way to learn. You just have to be careful that you are purchasing a book from a genuine dog trainer and not someone who can paint a pretty, simple picture of dog training… because a pretty, simple picture isnot what dog training is about. One of my favorite books was “Help! My Dog Has An Attitude” written by Gwen Bohnenkamp. This book is an excellent read and full of great tips and advice.
Dog Stress In An Ever Growing Scary World She tells you about the problems that dogs are facing in an ever growing scary world and the pressures it puts on dogs… whether the stress is caused by trains that are rushing past, cars that are coming too close, or even the drain in the middle of the street making that funny loud gurgling noise!

A Lot Of Dog Problems Are Made By Us! There is one thing about her book… it makes you realize that a lot of dog problems are made by us! We drive our dogs to do these things, but we are oblivious to it. Thank goodness your Scottie doesn’t make you feel guilty about it, though! Dog training books are easy enough to get and if you enjoy a good read then sit down to one, have a cup of coffee and get prepared for the next day’s step; actually training your dog!

“Good Scottie” Dog Training Sounds familiar? If it does, you need to invest some time into a little bit of basic “Good Scottie” dog training. Starting to train your dog from a young age is crucial, as the first few months of his life is when you will have the greatest influence on him; this is where he is shaped into the dog he is going to be when he is all grown up.
Get Your Scottie To Sit And Come The most basic of dog training is to get your Scottie to sit and come. Teaching him those commands are essential for him to learn. These commands are used for various different reasons. If you are in competition, and your dog jumps… making him sit will immediately make him stop. “Come” is the all-important one. If you take your dog for a walk and you let him off the leash, do you really expect him to come back to you and not run around like a maniac if you are chasing after him, shouting “Get here right this instance!” That would be just downright embarrassing! Teach him to COME. To teach your dog how to come requires only the most basic of techniques but a lot of repetition. The simplest way to get him to come is have a toy in one hand and a treat in the other . When you are in the house simply walk away from him, hold out the toy and excitingly call him to you. When he comes over, give him a treat. Always use the command for come that you are going to use in the future. Page 20 of 66

Doing this several times a day is a great way to teach him, but remember to have lots of long breaks so he doesn’t get bored and stop enjoying it. And don’t forget the treats! Getting him to sit could be a slight bit harder, but again only requires basic dog training. When you have mastered the come command, call him to you, place your hand on the end of his back and say “sit” while gently pushing down on his backside. When he sits his bottom down, give him a treat and a lot of praise. If you want him to sit longer , just delay giving him the treat and the praise. Get him to sit, but take your time bending down to him and feeding him his tidbit. Basic dog training is simple and very effective. It should also be fun for you and your Scottie. It doesn’t have to be hours and hours each day – just maybe five minutes or so. Don’t forget to reward your Scottie and yourself for all the “hard” work, though!!

Some Dog Training Tips There Are No Magic Potions When it comes to dog training, there are no secrets. Every dog training tip is different but it has been used before, and if they say it’s new, it means adapted. The simplest of tasks for an experienced dog master could be the hardest of tasks for the beginner . There are no magic potions, or miracle sayings that can make your Scottie do what you want. You have to spend time with him, loving him and training him.
Experience And Tone Of Voice Many people seem to “have a way with dogs” in the sense that they can ask your Scottie to do anything, and your dog will adhere to their command straight away; you try it five minutes later and your dog just stares at you blankly. It is true that some people have more of a chance getting dogs to do what they say, not because of some aura around them but because of experience and tone of voice. One great dog training tip is your tone of voice. Your Scottie needs to know that you mean business but he has to know that you’re not angry at him. The handler must find a tone of voice that shows dominance, but compassion. If you are constantly shouting at your Scottie, he is going to get used to it; he will not know when he is doing something wrong because he doesn’t know when he is doing something good.
A Lot Of Praise And Attention A lot of praise and attention is another great dog training tip. Dogs won’t learn the difference between good and bad unless they get treated differently. Page 22 of 66

When your Scottie does something bad, don’t roar at him; strictly tell him he was bad and not to do it again. Then, when he does it right, shower him with cuddles, treats and praise. Dogs come to learn that when they do something that they are told, they will get rewarded for it, and then after awhile it just becomes second nature to them.
Of Course Praise Is Still Needed! All dog training tips are different and one dog is not identical to the next, so try them. It won’t hurt to keep trying. The most influence on your dog’s life is when they are 3-16 weeks; this is the time that moulds them into the kind of dog they are going to be when they grow bigger . When you train your dog in these weeks this is what he will be doing for the rest of his life. Make sure you try a variety of the dog training tips available to you; some may work, some may not – but at least you’re giving your Scottie the best start in life.

Training Your Scottish Terrier Puppy Puppies Are Not All Fun And No Work! A new puppy in the home excites everyone, especially children, but make sure you got the puppy for a good reason and not just on a spur of the moment feeling. Like they say, dogs are for life, not just for Christmas. Your Scottish Terrier puppy can bring lots of happy memories and times but puppies have a lot of training and work involved as well; they are not all fun and no work! Puppy dog training is something that can be achieved in a matter of weeks depending how much time and attention you spend on it. You don’t need to train for hours and hours a day; a few minutes several times a day is all it takes. The first thing you need to train your new puppy in is obedience. Commands like sit, come, heel, stay, and fetch are basic enough for them to learn. As they get older, you can incorporate commands like paw, roll over and play dead! Training a young puppy is not as hard as you may think as they are like a blank sheet of paper waiting to be written on. The way and things that that they are taught will stick to them and will influence them later on in life, although training isn’t forever, so you need spend a few minutes every day just to keep reminding them what to do. There are not-so-nice consequences involved when puppies aren’t trained; for a start, your house will constantly be a “non-stop workshop” for them and your furniture will have massive holes in it.

Puppies are like babies and need to be taught the difference between right and wrong; to do this you need some puppy dog training!
Just A Bit Of Good Old Hard Work! Many handlers, experienced or in-experienced, are turning towards training products and aids, but training can be done without these methods. Just a bit of good old hard work!
A puppy may take several months to train, but when it is complete, the rewards will be well worth it. But don’t forget to polish up on your training for several minutes each day or your dog will slowly forget, and you’ll have to start all over again, with an even bigger task… training an older dog!

Potty Training Your Scottish Terrier Dog As much as we would love dogs to use potties, that isn’t what this chapter is about. I’m talking about house training, making sure that they know to go outside when it is time to do their business. Potty training your Scottie is a lengthy procedure but at the end you’ll know it’s worth it. Dog house training may be one of the hardest training techniques, as it is the one that requires the most attentiveness and work. You have to be able to read your Scottie’s body signals as he can’t tell you when he needs the toilet. Many people make the mistake of assuming that their Scottie will bark when he needs to potty; sometimes they are lucky to find a dog that will, but believe me, there are many out there who don’t – and accidents are found all over the house!
They Will Wait Until They Come Inside The House To Do Their Business When you are at home, spend as much time with your Scottie as possible. Dog toilet training will be much easier if you do. Every 45 minutes or so, take your dog outside and whenever he does the toilet outside, make sure he is praised very happily and excitedly with lots of enthusiasm, and do this every time that he “goes” outside. He will realize that this is where he needs to go to the toilet, and when he can control his bladder a little better, he will wait until you come to let him out. It does take a lot of time and patience, though.
The Newspaper Method The simplest method for potty training a dog is the newspaper method. Many owners have the problem where dogs excuse themselves in the house, because they don’t know any different. You can make them sit outside for hours but they will wait until they come inside the house to do their business, and most of the time they will do it where you can't see them. Page 26 of 66

Your Scottie Needs To Learn To Trust You, Not Fear You Your Scottie, like other dogs, may try this “hiding ruse” because while trying to potty train their dog many owners punish them after they have done the toilet in the house. But that is no good; they need to be caught in the act. But you don’t need to rub your dog’s nose in it like many suggest! Your Scottie needs to learn to trust you, not fear you, or he will never learn. Never scold your dog for doing the toilet in the house as he does not know any better. We did the toilet in our diapers until we were potty trained because there was nothing else we could do about it. When we needed, we went. Well, dogs are the same. No dog is properly toilet trained until he is about 6 months old, so it is a lengthy procedure, but a great one when the end results start to show! Most dogs when they need the toilet will start to get restless and start sniffing around. This is when you pick them up and take them outside. When they are really young, you should take him outside at least once every hour . The first obstacle in potty training dogs is to teach your Scottie how to go on command. You can do this inside the house, then work your way up to teaching him to do it outside. Pick a certain area inside the house, maybe at the back door or something likewise, place a lot of newspaper around the area and every hour or so take him there and tell him to do the toilet, or whatever you want the command to be. Sooner or later he will do the toilet, but you have to keep a close eye on him around the house so you can see if he is going to do the toilet or not. When you see him go to do the toilet, take him to the paper and tell him your command, then praise him for doing it on the paper. This type of potty training needs a very vigilant handler . When he learns to go on command, try to take him outside instead of the paper; that way he will soon learn that he has to go outside. Page 27 of 66

Only Release On Command There are other problems that potty training your Scottie can help with – submissive urinating can be quite a large problem. Often when your dog meets someone new that he likes, or someone he knows… or even another dog… he can get very excited and in turn, he wets himself. This isn’t good for the person he is doing the toilet on, and is very embarrassing for you. Potty training your dog will help to only release on command.
You Can Teach Your Dog Anything With a lot of hard spent time and vigilance you can teach your dog anything. Potty training is just a step towards another accomplishment in your dog's life. When he does do the toilet outside and not in the house, make sure he receives lots of treats and praise. The more he knows it pleases you, the more he is likely to do it! Oh, and don’t forget to scoop!!

Obedience Training Your Dog Getting frustrated that your Scottie jumps up on people when you are visiting friends? Can’t understand why this otherwise wonderful friend runs away from you at the park while everyone else’s happily comes back?
Simple, Effective, And Very Fun To Do The simple answer is: “Have you tried dog obedience training?” It is simple, effective, and very fun to do if you have the right attitude and patience. The basics of dog obedience training and teaching your Scottie to sit, stay, and come. These basic training commands will be extremely beneficial to you later on in your dog’s life. When you take your Scottie out, you don’t want him to be running amuck in the street; you want to show him off for the perfect dog that he is! Dog obedience training can be achieved in a matter of weeks with the right attention, dedication, and patience.

Dogs Are Kind Of Like Children There are a lot of obedience classes available. So if you can't teach your Scottie by yourself, there is plenty of support at the class. There are also other dogs there. Not only are you training your dog you are socializing him too, which, of course, is the next step after sit, stay and come. Dogs are kind of like children to an extent, except with a lot of fur . They need to be taught right and wrong.
Treats Are A Great Method Of Dog Obedience Training I always find that treats are a great method of dog obedience training; you award them with a special treat when they have done something you have asked them to. If they don’t respond, they don’t get a treat. There is no point shouting at your Scottie, as he will only become scared of you, and you don’t want that; you want to form a happy relationship with him. Dog’s are a man’s best friend! When teaching your Scottie obedience, try and teach him away from distractions like his toys. Take him to an empty field or park where there aren’t any people, only you and him. Tell him firmly but nicely that you want him to sit, then take your hand and place it on his back and gently guide his bottom down. When it is down, say sit and tell him he’s a good boy. Then award him with a treat. Repeating this over and over again will make him realize that when you say sit you mean for him to sit and he gets rewarded. soon enough he will know to sit when you tell him to, and the treats are no longer necessary.
Getting Him To Stay Is Another Matter Getting him to stay is another matter. You’ll probably need another person for that. Get him to sit (once he has learned how) and get a friend to hold him. Walk away from him, telling him to stay. When he comes to you, make him sit, and tell him how clever he is! Don’t forget to reward him. While using this technique, you are also teaching your Scottie how to come to you as well, so don’t forget to say "Come" to him, not just his name. When dogs are born they are like soft clay. Sometimes The Kennel Isn’t The Godsend Some Think It Is A lot of people aren’t using kennels properly and therefore end up with more problems than they had started with. You firstly need to identify the problem that you are using dog kennel training for: Is it for housebreaking? Chewing? Making a mess?
Once You Have Identified The Problem You then need to utilize the cage to your advantage: All dogs should feel at home when they enter their cage. Food and water should always be available to them and comfortable bedding. For chewing problems, chew toys should be available in the kennel and nowhere else. Some Different Dog Training Techniques When you say "sit," does your Scottie give you that “There’s no way I’m going to do what you say” look? These training techniques all are based on the fact that your dog will realize that, to get what he wants, he has to do what you are telling him to do. What if he doesn’t do it? Walk away. Don’t shout at him or keep trying. If he doesn’t listen, just ignore him and walk away; then, about 5 minutes later , go back and try again. He soon comes to realize that you are in charge and he has to do what you say to get what wants.
Surviving The “Leader Of The Pack” Ploy When dogs are born they usually have siblings, and their mother is the “Leader of the pack.” When a young dog leaves his mother he starts to think that he is free and can do what he wants. When he first joins a family, he starts to act dominant. He tries to be leader of the house. You can’t let him gain this position you need to show him through dog training techniques that humans are the head of your house, not the dog.
Puppy Dog Eyes He does not have to be aggressive to get what he wants. Scotties are extremely intelligent and sensitive… almost as if they can “read” your feelings.

Sometimes dogs use the sympathetic approach using their puppy dog eyes. This is just another attempt at trying to get higher in the dominance hierarchy and you can’t let them get ahead of you.
Your Kids As Sidekick Training Partners When it comes to kids dog’s see them more as playmates than masters as children can get down to their height and play with them, under adult supervision when your child gets to around the age of nine you can start to teach them to use dog training techniques so they can show your Scottie that when they ask him to do something, he has to listen to them, and not just listen to you.

Dogs Behaving Badly! Bad behavior in dogs can consist of many problems. Does your Scottie bark all night long and keep you from sleeping? Are you afraid he is going to keep biting? Does he chew everything except his toys? If the answer to any of these questions is YES, then you need to invest some time into a little bit of dog behavior training.
A Little Training Will Go A Long Way Dogs that bark can be extremely irritating, but the main thing is not to lose your cool. If you shout at him, he will try to shout louder than you!

When The Bark Is Worse Than The Bite Try and find out the cause of his barking: Is he barking because he is afraid? Is he happy? Is there someone out there? If you can’t find the reason for the barking then he is doing it because he doesn’t know it is wrong to bark all the time. This is where dog behavior training comes in. There are lots of products available to help dogs with constant barking; there are special collars which gives them the tiniest of electric shocks so they know that it isn’t good to bark. No, this is not cruel. For some very stubborn dogs, this tiny electric shock is a wakeup call, and will not be necessary for very long.

When The Bite Makes The Bark Pale In Comparison A biting dog is maybe one of the more serious behavior problems, especially now that the laws are tightened. And any dog that bites someone is more than likely to get put down. Teaching your Scottie not to bite is one of the most important teachings you can give him. This is where you have to be firm and stick to your guns. When playing with a young dog, they will automatically nip and gnaw at your hand. This is because when dogs play together they play with their mouths.

You Are Not Alone When teaching your Scottie not to bite, stroke him with one hand while offering something which is acceptable to be bitten with the other hand… something like a chew toy or a raw hide treat. Your dog will soon realize that hands aren’t there for biting. This process has to be done repeatedly for it to take effect. Dog behavior training is simple enough for the experienced dog lover , but when it comes to beginners, all the help available is needed. Accept help from friends and family and maybe even enroll in a dog behavior training class. This will help you to meet other people who are having the same problems with their dogs that you are with yours. You are not alone when it comes to having trouble with dog behavior problems. Every dog will get some form of problem; it's just a matter of how you fix them.
Training for Aggressive Dogs When it comes to aggressiveness in a dog, this is a very serious problem. There are new laws that state that a dog’s owner can be charged and the dog put down, if the dog bites someone.
Sweet Nature Will Prevail Of course, with some serious dog training, your dog can learn to enjoy people, not turn on them. Scottie’s tend to be one-person dogs and not as social as other breeds, but their sweet nature will prevail when trained in the right direction.

There are lots of reasons why dogs are – or become – aggressive. Maybe the dog feels his territory is being compromised, or he feels threatened. A lot of aggression comes from lack of confidence and insecurity. For the proud Scottie and his deep sense of self-worth, you simply have to drill down to what is making him so insecure.
Only Some Serious Dog Training Will Do The Trick Simple obedience will not solve your Scottie’s aggressive problems; only some serious dog training will do the trick. Aggressiveness doesn’t just mean biting; it means barking and lunging at people as well. This type of behavior needs to be addressed as soon as possible to prevent anything serious from happening to someone, or another dog.

Your vet can recommend you how to go about finding someone who can work with aggressive dogs. Training aggressive dogs is a specialty, and unfortunately could cost you a fair amount of money, but the end result is well worth it and you don’t have to worry about losing your dog. Most obedience and training schools won’t take aggressive dogs, as most of the places run classes with other members and won't let them be endangered. The best thing you can do is to take him to a proper dog school. Look in your yellow pages or online for one.
It Is Always Better To Be Safe Than Sorry Always check the techniques used by schools on how they train aggressive dogs, as training an aggressive dog can be dangerous. Some places may use out of date methods which could be harmful to your dog, although this isn’t always the case. It is always better to be safe than sorry. I wish I could say it was easy to train your dog not to be aggressive, but it isn’t.
What Counts Is That Your Scottie Stops Attacking And He Starts Loving At the end of the day, what counts is that your Scottie stops attacking and he starts loving. An aggressive dog can very much impair the relationship that you have with him, therefore you and your Scottie aren’t having the best time together, as you are always worried about him biting you, other people, or other dogs.

Training An Older Dog They say that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks; are they right? They are partly right, as I previously stated. An older dog will take a heck of a lot more training and dedication from its handler than a younger dog will, basically because an older dog’s mind is a lot more “set” in its ways.
A Scottie, Being A Scottie… An older dog will have passed that crucial period in its life that influences what the dog will behave like when it is older, therefore it already thinks it knows how to behave and trying to teach him other ways to behave can take a lot of time and effort. But your Scottie, being a Scottie, is highly intelligent and wants to please you. It may very be that these will override his natural tendency to be very stubborn!

You Can’t Train An Old Dog Like You Train A Puppy It is not impossible, but you can’t train an old dog like you train a puppy. You have to be a little bit stricter on an older dog because they have a lot more intelligence than a puppy, and know how to drive you ‘round the bend.
If He Thinks It’s His Idea Rather Than Yours! An older dog will more likely do something if he thinks it’s his idea rather than yours! For example, if he goes to sit, say sit and then praise him, he will think it was his idea. And if you keep on repeating this process, sooner or later you will have him sitting on command. This process will work for many of the commands, like fetch, come, stay, and heel. In saying that, you may surprisingly find that your older dog is particularly easy to train. Some dogs have a streak of stubbornness which means they do not train as easily as others – but some are a lot more susceptible to training methods. Training an older dog will of course be difficult because bad habits need to be broken and long-term habits need to be stopped. Your Scottie will thank you for it in the end and the end result will be well worth the trouble.
Making It Fun Training an older dog can be a grueling task but try making it fun by joining a class (they are not just for people with puppies) or try to get some support from family

or friends, invest in some training products like toys and treats, or even go as far as a training school.
But one thing is for sure… once you’ve taught your older Scottie what he needs to know, the bond that already exists between you will grow and you will become even more inseparable.
