GETTING TO KNOW
Hannah Dawson interviewed Riley Kelly to ask her why being a kid is so important and how she embraces her childhood.
I love going to school, cheer and being with my friends. Being a kid, I love using my imagination and believing in all magic. I'm only going to be a kid once and I want to make the most of it.
Don't stop believing in things or playing with your dolls just because others don't and always be a friend not a bully. If you love or believe in it, don't stop! Keep on believing, you are only a kid once! #unicornsarereal
We make up stunt routines, go to the movies, play on the trampoline or play tea party. I love hanging with my friends because they make me smile!
You don't want to grow up too fast. Being a kid is so fun and it is when we make lots of memories with the friends that we will have forever.
I love jumping on my trampoline, stretching to improve my skills, going out with my friends, playing with all my unicorns, dolls and my cat Bella.
RILEY I would have a magical unicorn named Glittercorn and I would be Rileycorn. The super power we would have would be to make no one have to ever be homeless. Everyone would always have food and there would be no more fighting or bad people. There would only be kindness, love, rainbows and glitter.
I love stepping onto the mat and performing because it is so much fun. I love the adrenaline I get from tumbling and stunting. I love doing cheer faces, being sassy and making amazing memories with new friends My cat Bella would say "please stop from so many dressing me up and stunting me"or different clubs. "FEED ME, FEED ME!". I always play dress ups and cheerleading with her and she loves her food.
When I am sad I like to tumble because it gets my mind off why I am sad. But if I am at home and feeling sad I gather my favourite toys, snuggle with Bella and watch Ellen DeGeneres and funny cat videos.
Lots & lots & lots of unicorns, lots of pink because it is my favourite colour, my Beanie Boo collection, my medals and my cat Bella sleeping on my bed.
BOX FOR THE BRAVE A great gift for your favourite bracemate or treat yo'self! Includes bracesfriendly recipe book, on-the-go braces care pouch, stickers, lip balm, wax, pocket mirror + more

CHEER
What is your favourite type of dance, and why? Jazz can be sassy and powerful, while contemporary is extremely expressive, and ballet is technically extremely difficult so when you do it well it feels amazing. When did you start cheerleading? I started cheer in 2015 because I wanted to learn how to tumble, which is a great additional skill for dancers to have when auditioning for professional work. I also wanted to take part in a team sport so I could meet new people. What opportunities has dance provided you with? I have danced all over the world (Australia, France, America, New Zealand and China) and I have seen my love of performing flourish. Cheer has given me friends – not to mention the ability to do a walkover (something I could never do growing up!) What are you proud of? I placed in the top 15 at the International Junior Miss Pageant in 2014 (an international scholarship program based in Virginia USA).
I’m proud of living overseas in Shanghai (China) by myself at 19. Most importantly I’m proud of how hard I work to accomplish my dreams. What is your dream job? When I was young I dreamed of working at Disney, which is something I’ve now done. I’d love to be a Radio City Rockette and I have just finished a summer intensive course with them in New York, Do you have advice for kids? Don’t be afraid to be who you are. Being true to yourself will get you a lot further in life than trying to be someone else. What was your favourite thing about being a kid? Letting my imagination run free and having the time to do that. I miss the excitement of being a kid. How do you keep your inner child alive? I like to goof off whenever I can. Interacting with kids is another great way to keep my inner child alive. I also love watching a lot of kids movies.

Strength and Conditioning Join Sally, Ruby and Jasmine as they show us some fun strength and conditioning exercises. See the video for the full tutorial FROG LEAPS
Lower body power development With one partner in the sphinx position pushing down through the shoulders, the other partner frog leaps over with straight legs. The leaper then gets into sphinx and it’s their partner’s turn to frog leap. Continue multiple times ensuring you use good technique the whole way through.
OVER AND UNDER
Leg and back strength, plus agility One person braces underneath in a solid squat position pushing their knees into their elbows as a solid platform. Their partner frog leaps over them, then returns through the legs to do it again multiple times. Then swap positions so each partner has a turn at both the strength and the agility.
14
PARTNER ROLLS
Shoulder and core strength for base, plus spacial awareness for person rolling. Base starts in a solid sphinx position leaning towards their partner to ensure they are braced well in readiness for their weight. Partner does a forward roll over the top landing neatly on both feet on the other side.
SIDEWAYS ROLL
For a variation on the above: Base starts in same solid sphinx position leaning towards their partner. Partner does a sideways roll over the top (shoulder to shoulder) landing neatly on all fours on the other side.
Technique is always important with any strength and conditioning work. To ensure you have the right technique check out our You Tube tutorial or chat to your coach.
Sally is an Australian strength and conditioning coach, currently studying for her PhD with the Australian Institute of Sport. Ruby and Jasmine cheer with Sirens Cheerleaders in the ACT.

Kid Hair With India Star Power
1 2 3 4
Visit our You Tube channel for the video tutorial Part the hair across the top of the head to create a top bunch and two side bunches. Then part remaining hair from top to bottom to create two low ponies (5 bunches in total) Make two plaits out of the top bunch and create two plaits out of the left side bunch.
Plait the right hand bunch and weave the braids under and over to create the star (see the picture).
Once you've finished your star secure your two final bunches with hair bands and remove any of the unnecessary hair bands that were holding your braids at the the bottom. Add ribbons to give the wow factor. Now that's star power!

Meet our 14 year old DJ - “Black Summer” Here at Cheer Kids Magazine we’re all about encouraging kids to make their dreams come true. Which is why we’re totes excited to meet this Aussie kid who is already well on the road to success. He’s super cool and already has an international single with a film clip shot in LA. Jordan talks to Rhys about music, dreams and being a kid.
What is your childhood dream? I originally wanted to be a video game designer which is why I really enjoy making electronic music because it incorporates computers. What was your hobby when you were younger? I used to make comics, video games, animations and I also used to enjoy drawing scary monsters. Did you ever expect to become a DJ? Ha ha. Not at all, it was a phase I went through when I got this toy mixing deck and a launch pad. I never expected this to happen, we uploaded my music unearthed to Triple J just for fun and it blew up! Do you have a fave music artist? I have many favourite artists but Flume and Skrillex are probably my top favourites.
What is your favourite music? Heavy metal or Trap What inspired you to follow your dreams? I used to watch people do gigs at these massive festivals on the internet all the time and I would just listen to electronic music. I thought it looked like a lot of fun. What is your dream now? I want to have music as a career but if I am able I want to branch off into game production because I am a big gamer. What would be your piece of advice for kids wanting to follow their dreams? Go and do it! Don’t let people tell you that you can’t do it because you can! There’s plenty of room for other people to do what they love.
BOOK CLUB We've got old books, new books and everything in between. Here are some of the books we have on the Cheer Kids bookshelf right now.
WOW! This is definitely one of our all time favourite books. From the second we got it we couldn’t put it down until we’d finished it. Without giving away too much (there are so many little surprises you really need to discover them for yourself), the book consists of 10 different stories depicting 10 dangerous situations that 10 brave kids have to escape from. Each story takes place over the space of 50 minutes. Jack Heath is such a talented writer we want to read more! (Interview next page) The first volume in the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories may be an oldie but it's still a goodie! Originally published in 1930 and revised in 1959 this book tells the story of the young Nancy Drew using her impressive sleuthing skills to help the Crowley family to inherit what is rightfully theirs. We love how Nancy is super smart and manages to solve the mystery before anyone else (including the police). This is the first book in the series of Nancy Drew Mystery Novels, each of which is a fantastic read. Girl Power!

When young Max is sent to his bedroom without any supper after behaving like a “Wild Thing” he uses his imagination to travel far away to a distant land where he becomes King of all the Wild Things. We loved the story of how young Max tamed the wild beasts and became their leader. The illustrations are just beautiful and the beasts are amazing. The book shows how there is no limit to the amazing places we can visit with the power of imagination.

Cinnamon popcorn: Make a batch of popcorn either on your stove top or in the microwave. Follow the instructions on your popcorn packet carefully. Melt butter and add cinnamon and brown sugar to suit your taste. Mix through and serve in decorative paper cups.

HOW
Embarrassing! Ever done something so embarrassing you just wanted to hide? It's OK, you're not alone! We've all been there. Three of our readers share their most embarrassing moments. I was at a cafe with my mum and we were sitting at the counter. She bought a packet of chips and put it next to her on her other side (saving them for later). The man next to her opened them and started eating them. We couldn't believe it! So Mum took them off him and we ate the rest. When we got in the car she opened her handbag and found a packet of chips inside. Oh no!!! He wasn't eating our chips, we were eating his!!!!

I was playing soccer and I got a really good shot at goal. I kicked the ball and it went off in the wrong direction. But my boot didn't! My boot came off, flew towards the goalie who thought it was the ball and dived to save it, but missed. Goal! (It's a pity boots don't count)
K
I go to a Catholic school and we have to say our prayers every morning. So I do the sign of the cross and say "amen" a lot. One day at cheer training we were doing our team chant and instead of yelling out "go team" and punching the air, I yelled out "Amen" and did the sign of the cross. Everybody laughed, including me.

A message from the editor Hello Cheer Kids Welcome to the Kids Being Kids issue of CKM. This magazine is created FOR Cheer Kids BY Cheer Kids so we love that we are celebrating all things “kidnom” in this issue. As Riley says “you’re only a kid once” so let’s make the most of it. I enjoyed meeting Riley in real life and she totally convinced me that #unicornsarereal. I also loved reading about Emily and how cheer and dance has helped her to travel the world and work at Disney. How cool is Black Summer? Another great story to inspire us to follow our dreams. We’ve managed to pack even more fan photos into this issue and Hannah did a great job creating the Spotlight pages. Plus our new “Tubers” page is likely to be a big hit. One of my favourite articles this issue was the Book Club Extra page on Jack Heath. I personally got to hang out with him for a morning and it was great to get a sneak peek into the mind of this very cool Aussie author. The mag is LOADED with fun pages and as always we have videos to go with all of our “how to” tutorials. We’ve got snacks, craft, beauty, exercise, brain teasers, art and games. Everything a kid needs really! No boredom allowed. It was fun having Cover Kid Shelby back on board again with her slime. It takes a big team to put this magazine together and you can find a list of our crew on the next page. CKM wouldn’t be possible without each and every one of them. If you’ve got some ideas for future issues, we’d love to hear from you. Our motto at CKM is “there’s no such thing as a bad idea”. Keep cheering!
