She is a Women’s Studies professor, writer, poet and musician, drummer and editor for Tom Tom Magazine. She is an international speaker in women’s history and was recently an invited guest to Sweden’s Ingmar Bergman Film Festival.
Women and Mythology Ushered into the mainstream by Joseph Campbell, mythic narratives have the power to enliven and enrich our day-to-day experiences and dreams. Come journey to the African crossroads, learn about Greek goddesses, gather around for a folktale, watch a film by Maya Deren, sit in Frida Kahlo’s garden or be mesmerized by mystic poets. We will explore the literary, psychological, spiritual and cultural significance of an array of female-centric mythological narratives, images and historical persons. Understanding Trauma Through lecture, discussion and group interaction, students will gain a greater understanding of what trauma is and how it affects people, including their behaviors, thought processes and feelings. This will include viewing trauma in the short, intermediate and long terms. Much of the generally available information on trauma is misleading and simply inaccurate, so this course will provide a concrete definition of trauma and its different levels (i.e. the trauma continuum). Well look at the interventions, therapies and support that will most likely help persons impacted by trauma, and the potential limitations and risks with those efforts. We’ll address issues such as: symptom management versus healing, the role of diagnosis and advanced topics of cultural and intergenerational trauma.
