What happens if my book is late back? If you are late returning your book you will encounter a charge. If in doubt come into a Learning Centre to extend your loan, alternatively you can call the Learning Centre 01245 265611 ext 3425 (The Learning Centre number and extension will be on the date label at the front of your book/DVD etc.) You can find the library computer system (Liberty) on line via the Chelmsford College Website www.chelmsford.ac.uk You can also renew your loans at college via the intranet, just select the Resources tab and select Learning Resources Either way you will need to login to Liberty using your normal college username and password. This will then bring up all of your information and you can renew your books from here…. Ask a member of staff to show you!

How do I take a Book out? Simply choose a book or books and go to the nearest Learning Centre help desk. We will issue your book/resource to your student badge… free of charge! There are 3 loaning categories: Standard Loan – 4 Week Loan Short Term Loan – 1 week loan Reference – book has to be kept in the Learning Centre and can’t be borrowed. Short term and Reference books will have a sticker on the spine of the book showing this.

How do I use an eBook? Chelmsford College order eBooks from Dawsonera. You can directly access these eBooks via the Dawsonera website – dawsonera.com You will need to sign in and access the eBook catalogue tab to access the eBooks we currently own. If you are logging in for the first time your username will be Chelmsford followed by your student number – e.g. Chelmsford20001234 And your password will be: P@ssw0rd You can then change your password by going to My Account and then Account Details within the Dawsonera website

How do I find out which eBooks Chelmsford College own? Once you have logged into our eBook provider’s website (dawsonera.com) you can select eBook Catalogue and this will show you only the books that Chelmsford College currently own. These books will also display an open green padlock symbol. If we don’t own an eBook the title will display a purple closed padlock.

Do I get charged to loan a DVD? Absolutely not – it’s free of charge! You may however acquire a charge if you are late bringing it back.

Can I buy a book from the Learning Centre? Every now and then the Learning Centres will have a book sale, where we sell old and underused stock. Just look for the book sale signs.

How long can I borrow a book for? Standard Loan – 4 Week Loan Short Term Loan – 1 week loan Reference – book has to be kept in the Learning Centre and can’t be loaned, but pages can be photocopied.

Can I take a tablet to a classroom? Unfortunately not, the tablets can only be used within the Learning Centre.

Can I borrow a pen, scissors a ruler etc. from the Learning Centre? Of course! We have desks set up housing pens, rulers staplers and hole punches. If you need anything please ask a member of staff – we are happy to help!

Can I borrow a computer? Absolutely! All computers in the Learning Centres will display a screen telling you if it’s available and for how long. At the top of the screen you should see ‘Available’ in green, this will also inform you of how long you may use it (maximum of 60minutes). If a PC has a booking then it will tell you that the PC is available for less than 60 minutes. If you would like to have longer on a PC just ask us and we can extend your time.

Do I need my student badge to return a book? Nope, we just need the book back. Don’t forget we have Book Return boxes outside Moulsham Street and Princes Road Learning Centres. Just pop your books into them when you’ve finished with them… no fuss!

Can I pay for stationery using my student badge? Unfortunately not, stationery has to be paid for with cash only.

Can I photocopy from a book and how much do I have to pay? Due to copyright laws we will have to check that we have the correct permissions to photocopy from each book. Each term you will receive £15 print credit that will be kept on your student badge. If you wish to photocopy something all we will ask for is your student badge…. So no money will be coming out of your pocket!

I’m having difficulty finding information, where can I go for help? Learning Resource Centre (Library) Staff are Information Specialists, therefore we are here to help and assist you. If we don’t know the answer we will find a resource or another member of staff who can help with your queries. We could even borrow other books from other libraries!... whatever you need, we are here to help!

Can I scan or email to a USB from the Learning Centre Photocopier? Yes you can! As long as the scan is in keeping with Copyright laws, a member of Learning Centre staff will happily do this for you.

Where are the newspapers? Newspapers are usually found near the comfortable seated areas across all Learning Centres. If you are unsure please ask a member of staff. Please note that we currently don’t receive daily newspapers at Lee Stafford Learning Centre, only the Essex Chronicle.

Can I charge my phone or laptop in the Learning Centre? Provided you get the charger of your phone, laptop or tablet PAT tested you can charge it up! We just ask that the material you are accessing on your device remains appropriate to the college policy Please ask a member of Learning Centre staff to PAT test your equipment and we will happily do that for you. A sticker will then be placed onto the plug. Once your charger and equipment has been PAT tested feel free to charge your device in any of the Centres or in class (at your tutors discretion).

What happens if I lose a book/ resource? If you have misplaced a loaned book from our library please come and see a member of staff. We will check our stock just in case somebody else handed it in

How do I make a reservation for a book? Please ask a member of the Learning Centre staff if you would like to Reserve a book or resource that is already On Loan. An e-mail will automatically be sent to you to notify you when it is available for collection.

Do Learning Centres sell memory sticks? Unfortunately we currently don’t sell memory sticks. We do however acquire a lot of lost memory sticks each year. We will keep them for a whole year and if no one collects them we clear them of files and have them as spares, so always ask if you need one.

Can I reserve a computer? Absolutely! Just let us know what time you would like to book your PC and we can reserve one for you at a time that is convenient.* *Please ensure that you arrive at your booked PC on time as we can only hold it for you for 5 minutes, if you don’t turn up and log in – that PC will become available for someone else to use. Please note that the reservation of computers is not currently available at Lee Stafford Learning Centre

Can I renew my books online? Yes you can! What if you don’t have the book I want? If we don’t own the book you need we can loan books in from other libraries. This is called an Inter Library Loan. All you have to do is ask a member of staff to order it in, and we will arrange it for you. Please bear in mind that this process make take up to two weeks.

How many Items can I borrow? You can borrow up to 6 books, one piece of equipment and 2 magazines. Please ask a member of staff if you would like to borrow more.

Can I keep books or DVDs for longer? Of course! As long as no one else has requested that book or DVD. We can extend your loan. Just ask a member of staff to renew your loan, call 01245 265611 ext: 3425 or renew online (via the intranet or the website). You can find the library computer system (Liberty) online via the Chelmsford College Website www.chelmsford.ac.uk You can also renew your loans at college via the intranet, just select the Resources tab and select Learning Resources Either way you will need to login to Liberty using your normal college username and password. Can I use my mobile in the Learning Centres? Of course! We only ask that you respect other people around you, so make sure your phone is on silent and please take your calls outside the centre.

Can I listen to music through headphones whilst I work in the Learning Centres? Of course, we just ask that you are the only person who can hear it. Don’t forget that you can also loan headphones from the Learning Centres.
