This year we welcome Tracy Airhart as the new Special Assignment Teacher of Integrated Technology. Tracy comes to us from Ecole Cathedrale where she taught grade 8 French immersion. She is replacing Dan Finn who has moved on to the position of Vice Principal at St. Mary’s Trenton. Computer labs in our schools have been re-imaged over the summer and now have the latest Ministry licensed software available. Most labs were up and running by the 3rd week of September. Early in September primary teachers received an in-service and had

On September 29th the ITC’s from each school came into the Board office for this year‘s 1st central training day. We highlighted the new software again as well as reviewed call logging procedures. A highlight of the day was a demo of the new SmartBoard that is now available for loan to schools with a plan for implementation.

SHAREPOINT ON BOARD WEBSITES Mary Ann Oosterman, the board’s web designer, has been busy over the last year with an exciting new web technology from Microsoft called SharePoint. This technology is allowing the web to become a tool that anyone can use and not just those who have taken web design courses. Mary Ann can design a site very quickly that can be kept up to date by people whose only experience is with things like email and word processing. Our first use of this technology was to provide new web sites to the elementary schools. It was interesting to review the old websites as many of them showed signs of great effort and heavy usage and then suddenly stopped and were never updated again. It would seem that the person with the passion and the knowledge of HTML probably moved to a different assignment and there was no one left at the school that felt they had the skills to step up to the job. With SharePoint anyone who has the desire to keep up a web site can do so with only minimal training. If you would like to see an example of how the elementary schools are using the SharePoint technology please have visit Saint Mary Trenton at http://schools.alcdsb.on.ca/stmt. Other sites can be viewed from the boards’ About Us web site. Sites have been designed for all elementary schools and a total of 16 schools have put their new sites into service. If your school has not yet gone live and wishes to do so the principal should contact Mary Ann to arrange a training session. What next? You may have heard the term
iShare being used. This is the name we have applied to the board’s new intranet. An Intranet is defined as a web site that is targeted at the employees of an organization and not the general population. Pages on an intranet are usually password protected so that the public cannot access them. With iShare this is the same username and password you use for email. iShare sites are being set up on request and many departments have information available. You may already have used an iShare site to get information about IEPs, and report cards. Many other sites have been created and you get to them from the For Staff page. A particularly active site with a lot of good information is the Finance site at http://ishare.alcdsb.on.ca/finance. And of course the IT Department has one as well at http://ishare.alcdsb.on.ca/its Mary Ann is now working on a new For Staff page that
will be a gateway to the board iShare sites. We hope that this becomes your first stop when looking for information. And the future? We already have a number of groups testing out this new tool for collaboration. There is great potential for groups such as subject councils, athletic associations, and learning networks. Several teachers are experimenting with SharePoint sites for their classrooms as a place to communicate with parents. They are finding it a useful tool for sharing homework schedules, handouts and schedules with parents. If you like what you see with these SharePoint sites and have a concept you would like to discuss, please contact Mary Ann at oosterma@alcdsb.on.ca

WEBQUESTS -
DEFINED
FROM WIKIPEDIA, THE FREE ENCYCLOPEDIA
In education, WebQuest is a research activity in which students collect information, where most of the information comes from the World Wide Web. It was first invented by Bernie Dodge in 1995.
Homework assignment: Team up with another teacher and try this webquest for teachers who would like to integrate technology into their literacy curriculum! http://www.wm.edu/edu cation/research/cdjohn/
According to the original paper by Dodge, a WebQuest is "an inquiry-oriented activity in which some or all of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the internet, optionally supplemented with videoconferencing." Usually, the quest is divided in the following sections:

research. WebQuests often take the form of role-playing scenarios, where students take on the personas of professional researchers or historical figures. The WebQuest is valued as a highly constructivist teaching method, meaning that students are "turned loose" to find, synthesize, and analyze information in a hands-on fashion, actively constructing their own understanding of the material. WebQuests' focus on group work also makes them popular examples of cooperative learning. Try out these great webquests:

ClassMouse is an incredible online resource library for teachers and students that was purchased by the Curriculum department for use during the 2005-2006 school year. There are over 30,000 resources specifically related to the expectations of the Ontario Elementary Curriculum and they are indexed by grade, subject and strand. Information packages were forwarded to all schools in September and we highlighted ClassMouse in our Fall Newsletter. As we visit schools we have been reminding teachers about this valuable resource. The decision to continue this subscription will be based upon usage, so try it out! To access ClassMouse go to the Board’s homepage and click on the ‘For Staff’ link at the top of the page. On the ‘For Staff’ page mouse over the Virtual Library button on the left side of the page and click on the ‘Elementary Resources’ link. A login window will appear where you will be prompted for your board User name and Password. This is the same user name and password that you use to access your board email account as well as to access your I.E.P.’s . Once you have signed in you will need to click on the ClassMouse logo near the top of the page.

Classroom Spotlight “Excellence is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of what you have to offer.” Here are some examples of teachers within our own system integrating technology into their curriculum with excellence! If you or someone you know has a technology success story you think should be shared send us an email. St. Mary Catholic School—Trenton
There is no question that today students are the most switched-on generation the world has every seen. Today’s classrooms call for teachers to be innovative educators who are focused on using a 21st century approach towards teaching and learning. Of the many forms of technology now available for use by teachers with their students in the classroom, interactive whiteboards provide significant potential for meeting the needs of students with diverse learning styles and for engaging students during the learning process. The interactive whiteboard is a technology medium that began to be used in classrooms in the late 1990’s. Whiteboards allow teachers and students to interact with technology in a manner that was not previously possible. The touchsensitive board allows users to interact directly with applications without having to be physically at the computer which is projecting the image onto the board. Elements of text, graphics, sound, animation, and video help teachers create lessons that interest and engage students during the learning process. In addition to information derived from software and the Internet, information can be typed using a computer keyboard or handwritten directly on the board using a wide range of colors and saved for future use. Student engagement is critical to student motivation during the
learning process. The more students are motivated to learn, the more likely it is that they will be successful in their efforts. Research has proven that the use of the Smart Board in classes increases student engagement. When I moved to St. Mary’s Trenton in the September, I was excited as our school had been selected by the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic School Board Foundation for a grant proposal for the purchase of a SMART Board for the school. Since this time I have found that the students who have experienced learning through the use of the board are more engaged and motivated in class. Through the use of the whiteboard different learning styles are accommodated; improving the chances of retention for all pupils. While teaching my JK and SK classes we have used the board with a variety of software packages including SMART’s Notebook software application, Language Trek Primary and Math Strategies Primary. Through the use of SMART”s Online educator resources I have instant access to a vast array of electronic resources that I can edit and tailor to meet the needs of my student’s. Even if your school is not considering the purchase of a SMART board at the time, I would encourage you to use SMART’s Notebook software in your classrooms with a PC and projector. This software is presently available on your school’s image and
MISA laptops. If you’re interested in downloading the software to your home computer visit www2.smarttech.com/st/en-us/ support If your school is considering the purchase of a SMART board and would like additional information please free to contact me at St. Mary’s. Regards, Dan Finn
