CASE STUDY
A Global Financial Services E-Payment Solution Provider Custom On-Demand Course with Simulated Instructor Support & Exercises This organization was looking to train 100+ global staff on Android development and programming. The staff was based in small groups across the globe and could not be release for days at a time to attend instructor-led training.
CLIENT CHALLENGE: One of the challenges with on-demand learning is how to get across the instructor interaction with the participants that occurs face to face. The organization was looking for an alternative solution which still provided staff with the ability to learn new skills which they could practice in a safe environment. Learning Tree was selected as their partner and we set a project team consisting of: •
Technical Author – who combines strong programming skills and an in-depth understanding of technology with superb communication skills, both written and verbal.
•
Content Developer – skilled at developing on-demand modules which are both engaging and fun.
•
Project Manager – with a strong background in e-learning project management.
•
Technical Product Manager – responsible for working with the Technical Author to develop the online labs and safe practice environment.
•
Client Solutions Manager – offering continuity from the sales process and overall client relationship point of contact.
OUR SOLUTION: •
Identified with the customer’s stakeholders which elements of the instructor-led course they wished to include and where additional customized elements were required. The specification was then baselined and the technical author worked through the course slides making amendments and tailoring to produce a storyboard for the on-demand learning.
•
Slides were converted into an online training course using an online tool in the content hosting platform, followed by a content developer working through each slide to identify where interactions could be added to keep the user engaged in the training, taking online exercises as opposed to simply clicking through the screens.
•
We also introduced audio and the content author recorded audio for each screen throughout the course to give the user as close as possible experience to the ILT. This is a distinct difference from an actor or computer-generated voice reading a script as the content author was able to leverage his years of training experience and subject matter expertise as an engaging trusted speaker which enhanced the modules.
The Hands-On Lab exercise component is where the learner practices their new knowledge to develop their skill. Using our SkyTap™ technology, we set up virtual machines which could be accessed by the users 24/7. The links to the user’s virtual machines were embedded into the on-demand modules and workbook instructions provided step by step guidelines for completing each exercise. Another point about instructor led training is the instructor’s ability to provide hands-on help which can be difficult to replicate online. We overcame this at specific points in the course where we thought most likely hands-on help could be required by including a video of the content author with audio demonstrating the exercise and the desired learning outcome. The customer wanted their staff to access this training from their Learning Management System (LMS). This a Moodle™based LMS. To prepare for this we sent an empty Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) file to the customer to test upload, and then during course development we embedded a link to SkyTap™ into a SCORM file for them to test upload, again during course development. Finally, the week before release, we sent them a 90% completed course with links to each Sky Tap exercise for them to test upload. By using this approach we were able to quality test connectivity prior to launch.
