ORIGIN OF THE SPELLING BEE The word bee, as used in spelling bee, is one of those language puzzles that has never been satisfactorily accounted for. A fairly old and widely-used word, it refers to a community social gathering at which friends and neighbors join together in a single activity (sewing, quilting, barn raising, etc.) usually to help one person or family. The earliest known example in print is a spinning bee, in 1769. Other early occurrences are husking bee (1816), apple bee (1827), and logging bee (1836). Spelling bee is apparently an American term. It first appeared in print in 1875, but it seems certain that the word was used orally for several years before that. Those who used the word, including most early students of language, assumed that it was the same word as referred to the insect. They thought that this particular meaning had probably been inspired by the obvious similarity between these human gatherings and the industrious, social nature of a beehive. But in recent years scholars have rejected this explanation, suggesting instead that this bee is a completely different word. One possibility is that it comes from the Middle English word bene, which means "a prayer" or "a favor" (and is related to the more familiar word boon). In England, a dialect form of this word, been or bean, referred to "voluntary help given by neighbors toward the accomplishment of a particular task." (Webster's Third New International Dictionary). Bee may simply be a shortened form of been, but no one is entirely certain.

This year marks the 7th Annual Baltimore Bee, a showcase of Baltimore’s brightest students, who have already achieved greatness just by reaching today’s regional spelling competition. Public, private, and charter schools from Baltimore City and Baltimore County represent this year’s participant pool. Please know that as you look on stage, the diverse student group before you is not only today’s great spellers, but also tomorrow’s promising leaders. Dear Guest, Operated and maintained by the College of Fine Arts and Communication, Stephens Theatre, located in Stephens Hall at Towson University, is a 688 seat proscenium performance venue. Originally constructed in 1911 and renovated in 1990, the theatre ers contemporary production facilities in a historic environment, retaining much of its original character and architectural detail. The lobby and main doors to the auditorium are located on the second floor of Stephens Hall, sharing common space with academic and classrooms. Because of our proximity to teaching and working spaces in historic Stephens Hall, we ask our visitors in advance, to be especially mindful and respectful of their environment when attending an event. The theatre management must rely on teachers, parents, and chaperones to maintain order and ensure students are on their best behavior, not only during the event, but also when entering and exiting the auditorium. Normally prohibited, students will be allowed to eat snacks in the theatre during the scheduled snack-break at the Baltimore Spelling Bee. Trash boxes will be provided and we ask that teachers, parents, and chaperones take an active role in helping the theatre’s management minimize the impact of trash and food debris during the privilege extended to them requires their personal responsibility in exercising care while eating and drinking in the theatre as well as properly disposing of all of their lunch waste. Sushi Hana How did you get affiliated with the Baltimore Bee? I was looking to find an internship where I would be able to apply the skills I've gained in school while developing my creative abilities in a fun and exciting environment. The intern position for the Bee met and exceeded my desired criteria. What has been your favorite part of your internship? Without a doubt my favorite part of my internship has been the opportunity to work alongside the fun and inviting members of Learn it Systems and to support their admirable mission of promoting education. I am specially grateful to the incredibly talented team of worker-bees: Meghan, Kerry, and Troy for giving me career insight and applicable advice (from workshops in Adobe Illustrator to simple yet unfamiliar time saving tips). What is one word that you always have trouble spelling? Entrepreneur, this one is a double trouble word. Luckily I have a mediator, spell check. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I may look harmless but apparently I am a violent sleeper and like to kick people out of bed. What is some advice you can offer the Baltimore Bee spellers? Use the dictionary to define a word. Look inside to define yourself.

Bee-Healthy, Bee-Happy tips for healthy eating and physical activity Here are a few activities and steps that you and your family can consider to get started on a path to a healthier lifestyle: •
Give children toys that encourage physical activity like balls, kites, and jump ropes.
•
Encourage children to join a sports team or try a new physical activity.
•
Limit TV time and keep the TV out of a child’s bedroom.
•
Facilitate a safe walk to and from school a few times a week.
•
Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
•
Walk around the block after a meal.
•
Make a new house rule: no sitting still during television commercials.
•
Find time to spend together doing a fun activity: family park day, swim day or bike day.
•
Talk or write a letter to your children’s principal to incorporate more physical education in schools.
