Leavenworth National Cemetery 150 Muncie Road Leavenworth National Cemetery is associated with the Western Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers; one of 11 facilities which served as precursors for Veterans Administration Medical Centers. Today the cemetery encompasses 128.8 acres at the southeast portion of the facility. Prior to the construction of the healthcare facility, the land had been part of a Delaware Indian reservation, and later the Stockbridge (Indian) Baptist Mission. The medical facility was transferred to the Veterans Administration (VA) when it was formed in 1930. The cemetery was elevated to national cemetery status and transferred to the new National Cemetery System within the VA in 1973. Among the noteworthy burials are six Medal of Honor recipients and the remains of 12 Native Americans that were discovered during the excavation for a new medical building and were re-interred in the National Cemetery.

Kansas Scenic Byways www.travelks.com/ksbyways Leavenworth is the only city in Kansas that is located on two byways: The Frontier Military Historic Byway and the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway. @GlacialHillsByway • @FrontierMilitaryHistoricByway The Frontier Military Historic Byway extends roughly 167 miles tying Fort Leavenworth at the north to Fort Scott at the south, and then onward to the Oklahoma border from Fort Scott. It follows K-5 east out of Leavenworth to I-435, then follows U.S. 69 and Alternate U.S. 69 south to the state line. The route approximates the old military trail used by the Army to transport troops and supplies between the frontier forts. The Glacial Hills Scenic Byway begins at the intersection of K-7 and K-92 in Leavenworth and extends 63 miles north through the Glacial Hills of northeast Kansas. Glaciers once covered the northeast corner of Kansas and when they receded north, they left behind a unique, scenic landscape of rolling, wooded hills, rock-strewn soil and valleys with clear, running streams. The byway traverses Atchison, Doniphan and Leavenworth Counties and visits the communities of Atchison, Leavenworth, Troy and White Cloud, representing the earliest days of pioneer settlement of Kansas along the Missouri River.

Fort Leavenworth is considered a national treasure with historic sites and homes, a world-class museum, the nation’s premiere Buffalo Soldier monument, breathtaking views overlooking the Missouri River, parks and a challenging, rolling, 18-hole golf course. Many recreational facilities are open to the public. https://home.army.mil/leavenworth/index.php
Fort Leavenworth 913-684-3600 • https://home.army.mil/leavenworth/index.php Fort Leavenworth was established in 1827, making it the third-oldest active military installation in the nation. Some of its sights include a national cemetery, one of the first 14 national cemeteries established by President Abraham Lincoln; the U.S.
Army Command and General Staff College; Memorial Chapel, one of the oldest chapels in the Army; a swale of the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails; and many historic 19th century buildings. Among these is the Rookery, the oldest house in Kansas, built in 1834.

Central Postal Directory Battalion Grant and Stimson Avenues
The 6888th Battalion’s mission was to sort and redirect the delivery of the millions of backlogged letters and packages that had all but ceased to be delivered during WWII. Some of the mail had been delayed by as much as two years. They were given six months to fix the backlog and they completed their mission in three.

Buffalo Soldier Monument Grant and Stimson Avenues During the American Civil War, the U.S. Government formed regiments known as the United States Colored Troops. In 1866 Congress reorganized the Army and authorized the formation of two regiments of black cavalry soldiers as the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry and four infantry regiments designated as the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st Infantry Regiments. The 10th Cavalry was organized September 21, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas with Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson as Commanding Officer. The 10th Cavalry served in the following campaigns: Indian Wars, War with Spain, Philippine Insurrection and World War II. They were inactivated March 20, 1944. The Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry performed duties such as building forts and roads, riding shotgun on stagecoaches and mail routes, escorting cattle drives and wagon trains, protecting the builders of the railroads, installing telegraph lines and protecting the settlers in areas plagued by bandits. The American West has fascinated people all over the world since settlers first crossed the Mississippi, however, unless it includes the contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers, any story about “how the West was Won” is incomplete without their story.

Berlin Wall This monument memorializes the historic barrier that separated West and East Berlin during the Cold War. After the destruction of the Berlin Wall in 1989, concrete sections were given to President Ronald Reagan. Three sections were subsequently donated to Fort Leavenworth because of the worldwide influence of the U.S. Army Command and
Grant and Stimson Avenues General Staff College. The design of the memorial expresses three themes: a “falling position” representing the crumbling of the wall; a horizontal position representing the Wall’s destruction; and a vertical position representing that democracy stands. To view the monument, follow sidewalk East from The Buffalo Soldier Monument.
Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery 395 Biddle Boulevard President Abraham Lincoln established the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery on July 17, 1862. It is one of the first 14 national cemeteries and is the final resting place for 23,000 veterans from every war since the War of 1812. Captain Thomas W. Custer, brother of George Armstrong Custer who died with his brother at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876, is buried here. He was the first person in history to receive two Medals of Honor, and is joined in the cemetery by nine other Medal of Honor recipients and nearly 150 Buffalo Soldiers.

The USDB, as it is known, was originally named the U.S. Military Prison. It was established by Congress in 1874 and has operated at the fort since May 15, 1875. This military prison was the first prison in the U.S. to offer vocational training for inmates. It is the only maximum-security military prison in the department of Defense, and has inmates from all the armed services. A new prison was completed in 2002.
