Lansing Visitors & Relocation Guide
2019-2020
MAYOR'S LETTER
A
s Mayor of Lansing, Kansas, it is my pleasure to tell you about how far our City has come since 1959, the year of our incorporation. This is an updated guide covering 2019-2020, and in this booklet readers will get a taste of what makes our community special. If you have any questions regarding the City, please contact Lansing City Hall at 913-727-2487 for additional information or visit our website at www.lansingks.org. The city of Lansing has been deemed one of the safest places to live in Kansas by numerous websites in the recent past. Lansing’s schools have consistently been recognized as among the best in the state. The growth within Lansing has been constant and orderly. In early 2019, City leadership and staff helped broker deals to significantly expand our local grocery store, as well locate a new convenience store at one of Lansing’s busiest intersections. Over the next two-three years, plans have been submitted for more than 200 new housing starts. Commercial and residential developers know that
Lansing is ideally located. We are only 25 minutes from metropolitan Kansas City, 25 minutes from Kansas City International Airport and 10 minutes from a major interstate highway. In Lansing, you have a small-town atmosphere with large city accessibility. The City Council asks you to support local businesses while you stay in the Lansing area. If anyone at City Hall can be of assistance or set up any appointments you may wish to make, feel free to contact our Department of Community and Economic Development at 913727-5488. The City staff will do all it can to assist you with your residential or commercial relocation to Lansing. Please feel free to call me or city staff if
you have questions. Welcome to Lansing, Kansas. We continue to grow – and would love to have you be part of our future. - Michael W. Smith Mayor

ansing’s founding father, William Lansing Taylor, was born on October 30, 1831, in New York. During his youth, he studied both law and medicine. Taylor was involved in business in Missouri when the Civil War started. He joined the Seventh Missouri Infantry and soon after was captured and taken prisoner. Taylor was later paroled after agreeing he would not take up arms against the South again. He broke this contract in 1862 by enlisting as a hospital steward in the 7th Regiment of the Kansas Volunteer Cavalry under the name of James William Lansing. After the Civil War, he continued using his new name. Lansing earned a position at the new state penitentiary in Kansas as a hospital steward. After resigning this position, he opened a general mercantile store in the area called “Town of Progress,” which was home to the post office and an apothecary business. As a result of the long period he spent as a hospital steward and running the drug store, he became known as “Doc Lansing”- even though he was not a doctor nor was his last name really Lansing. and his friend John C. Schmidt became co-owners of ninety acres of land that was platted into town lots in 1878. The two partners donated the streets for public use and named the area “Town of Lansing.” Both the area named “Town of Lansing” on the west side of the road and the “Town of Progress” on the east side became known as Lansing. Doc Lansing died in Lansing on March 20, 1886, and is buried at Mount Muncie Cemetery in Lansing, Kansas. Lansing became an incorporated city in 1959. For the past sixty years, Lansing’s population has increased by about 2,000 residents every ten years. In 1960, Lansing’s population totaled 1,261 individuals. In 1990, Lansing had a population of 7,120 and by 2010 the population was just over 11,000. Lansing is called “The City with a Future” as a result of its rapid and constant growth. Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) has played an active role in Lansing’s history and continues to help serve the community. LCF, formerly named the Kansas State Penitentiary, is the State’s largest facility for detention and rehabilitation of male adult felons. The Kansas Constitution authorized LCF in 1859. In 2018, the prison began a modernization/replacement project with an eye toward efficiency and safety for those who work at LCF, as well as those who are incarcerated there.
