HUMANITARIAN AWARD
2018
This year’s Humanitarian of the Year is Joe Denney. Joey was born and raised in Leavenworth attending St. Paul Lutheran School and Leavenworth High School. He started working in his grandfather’s electrical business at the age of 10, studied building trades in high school, and joined the family plumbing and heating business in 1980. He began as a laborer with the “dirt crew” and worked his way through various plumbing and heating tasks obtaining his Journeyman Plumbing License along the way in both Leavenworth and Johnson Counties. Joey was instrumental in expanding J.F. Sister Vickie Perkins, SCL Denney Plumbing & Heating, Inc. to include air conditioning services. As a result, he now holds a mechanical license as well. Joey is currently Vice‐President and commercial estimator for JF Denney. Joey is a loving, supportive husband to his wife, Janice, and proud father of two amazing children, Michael and Michelle. Through the years, Joey served St. Paul Lutheran Church & School, as Elder, Property Trustee, Congregational Vice‐President and President. He traveled to Alaska several times supporting Alaska Mission for Christ by assisting in the construction of a retreat center to serve wounded warriors and Alaskan natives. Joey also served on the Technology Committee at the church and school and is seen at church every Sunday behind the soundboard. Joey, along with three others from his church, is halfway through a 2½ year study which gathers church leaders from across the Midwest and trains them in preparing disciple leaders who will disciple other leaders. Joey is active with Friends of LHS, a booster club of Leavenworth High School; supports the Leavenworth High Alumni Association; and currently serves as Treasurer of the Stella Booster Club. Previously, Joey served as a member of the Leavenworth High School Site Council representing local businesses; served on the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Education Committee including two years as Chairman; and served on the ABC Trust Board. He also served on the Lansing Plumbing Code committee and Lansing Mechanical Code committee. Says Joey, “Being named Humanitarian of the Year was a complete surprise. I feel what I do serving the community is normal. I have grown up in Leavenworth and love the community. I have learned that giving back is what and who I am, and hope I taught my children the same. So THANK YOU for the recognition, even if I do not feel I have done anything special. There are so many wonderful, giving people in our community; it was humbling to be recognized.”

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR
2018
Saint John Hospital has been a vibrant part of the Leavenworth and Lansing Communities since opening its doors in 1864. The first private hospital in the State of Kansas, it was opened under the direction of Sister Joanna Bruner, the first trained nurse in the state, and surely the first woman in the Western Territory to be the administrator of a hospital. Since that time, professional excellence, leadership, and a readiness to respond to the needs of the community have been hallmarks of the hospital. Today, Saint John Hospital is part of Prime Healthcare and is accredited by the Joint Commission. Paula Ellis As a key stakeholder in the area, Saint John Hospital has seen great growth in recent years. Most recently, the hospital has had a substantially improved financial performance; Saint John has gone from a -16% EBITDA (a measure of a company’s operating performance) in 2017 to a +9% EBITDA in 2018. Additionally, the Senior Behavioral Health Unit has expanded from eighteen beds to thirty beds, as a result of the geropsych needs of seniors in our region. To better care for patients experiencing stroke symptoms, the Emergency Department earned Stroke Ready Certification in 2016, then earning recertification in 2018. Finally, a skilled nursing facility was developed to provide for patients who need short-term, medically necessary professional services while recuperating from an illness or procedure.
Saint John Hospital received the coveted Five-Star Rating from The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2018. The star award is given based on metrics such as mortality, readmission, patient safety, and patient experience. Saint John was one of only ten in the state of Kansas to have received the five-star recognition. Along with data on quality measures, recently CMS also publicly released scores grading hospitals on how closely they follow guidelines for treating severe sepsis and septic shock. Saint John received a 100% score; the national average is 49%, and the Kansas average is 52%. Saint John Hospital also achieved five stars for its performance in Treatment of Sepsis from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. This achievement is part of new findings and data released by Healthgrades and featured in the Healthgrades 2018 Report to the Nation. Saint John Hospital and its sister hospital, Providence, continue to impact local healthcare accessibility and health outcomes. As proud supporters of The Sisters of Charity Leavenworth/Caritas Clinics, the hospitals supply more than $2,600,000 in uncompensated healthcare services to clinic patients.

Partnerships include the Leavenworth County Development Corporation, the Leavenworth Main Street Program, Fort Leavenworth/FMWR, Saint Vincent Clinic, the University of Saint Mary, the Lansing Alumni Association (benefiting Lansing High School), and of course, the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce, through which Saint John sponsors a number of events throughout the year. On the significance of being named the Chamber’s 2018-2019 Business of the Year, Paula Ellis, DNP, CARN, NEA-BC, Chief Executive Officer, Saint John, said, “We were honored to receive this award that supports our efforts to be known as the community hospital in Leavenworth and the surrounding area.”

JUNIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
2018
This year’s Junior Citizen of the Year is Hunter Hotaling, a senior at Lansing High School. Hunter is described as being a young man who has made considerable, meaningful contributions, despite “only being” a high school senior. Hunter has a special quality which inspires others to follow his vision; indeed, he has shown a true talent for organizing his peers to rally around needs in the local and larger communities. His school and community service are motivated by Hunter Hotaling a strong sense of kindness and caring toward those in need, and, perhaps most importantly, working for the common good of all. Hunter has been recognized by various and numerous organizations at the local, state, and national levels for his volunteerism and service. He is a superior student as well, carrying a GPA in excess of 4.0. Hunter is described as being a talented, intelligent student with the charisma, confidence, strong values, and respect for others to make a huge difference in the world around him. Says Hunter, “Being named the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce’s Junior Citizen of the Year is a truly an incredible honor to receive. It has allowed me to create even more connections within the Leavenworth/Lansing Community that I have utilized to create more fun, innovative and meaningful projects for the less fortunate with maximum reach to those who need the help the most in our community. Being a Lansing Lion, it was immensely gratifying to receive an award from Leavenworth, further displaying a true sense of unity between our two towns. In a way, it shows how that the drive and ability to help others is within all of us, regardless of political bias or which side you root for at the annual LV/LL football game. This upcoming fall I will be attending the University of Tennessee where I plan to continue my passion for helping others within the community. I have already made small grassroots connections with the city of Knoxville’s Catholic Charities with the “PB&J” drive I am conducting now through May 23. Along with this, I have applied for the university’s community service organization “Ignite: Serves” as a way not only familiarize myself with my new home but to also think and plan future projects. Ironically enough, the University of Tennessee’s mascot is the Volunteer. Go Vols!”

ATHENA AWARD
2018
This year’s Athena Award Recipient is Sister Vickie Perkins, SCL Petite and mighty – these are two words which can describe Sister Vickie Perkins. Sister Vickie started out as an educator working for schools around the country, and specifically, the Kansas City Area. Her years as an educator include two years as a fifth grade teacher in Chicago, over twenty years as a high school teacher in Kansas City, six years as the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Kansas City – Saint Joseph, seven years Sister Vickie Perkins, SCL as the Executive Director for early care and education at the Gardner Institute, and in 2005 she served as the President of Christo Rey High School in Kansas City. Soon after she arrived in Leavenworth, she discovered there was no central clearinghouse for those in need; as a result, she opened Welcome Central, which functioned as that clearinghouse for services helping those in need. After several months of operating Welcome Central, she began to think about what could be done for the homeless. She then set upon working tirelessly meeting and bringing people together from over thirty churches of various faiths to help provide possible solutions. What came from that effort is nothing short of miraculous, as she was able to bring about the Leavenworth Interfaith Community of Hope; the Community of Hope houses the Interfaith Shelter of Hope, which provides a safe and secure environment for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness. Sister Vickie is simply amazing. She has made such a tremendous difference in Leavenworth, and has given people in need and who are homeless security and hope for a better future. She continues to be a major influence in discussions for a program to bring a public transportation system to the area, which would help provide a way to get to doctor appointments, job interviews, and much, much more. Says Sister Vickie, “The Athena Award symbolizes service in the best meaning of the word. To receive this award was amazing. So many people in this community provide outstanding service to others. The community of Leavenworth is very generous with their time and their resources. I am so blessed and grateful to be a part of it.”

WELCOME
If Leavenworth and Lansing are to go forward – if our home cities are to realize their common ambitions and successes – they will do so by concerted action, harmonized effort, and a deeply held shared purpose, all working through a common medium. The medium through which this civic thought and action are expressed is the Chamber of Commerce.
WHAT IS THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE?
The Chamber of Commerce is an association of businesses, civic organizations, education, goverment, and of course, citizens, organized on a thoroughly democratic, non-partisan and nonsectarian basis, working for the general good of all interests in our community. The Chamber of Commerce serves as the central hub for information and activity in the community, organized for the promotion and protection of both business and civic interests. It affords the agency through which the community can think, plan, and work.
HOW DOES IT OPERATE?
Control of the Chamber of Commerce is in the hands of the membership. Each member has the same right of expression. Members elect the Board of Directors, take part in planning what shall be undertaken by the organization, and serve on committees to secure the desired results.
IS IT WORTHWHILE?
The foundation for the Leavenworth and Lansing of tomorrow is being laid today. Individual initiative will not suffice for the challenges which Leavenworth and Lansing must meet and overcome. The future of Leavenworth and Lansing, commercially and industrially, is in the hands of the men and women of vision and energy in our community today. One goal of the Chamber of Commerce is to call on our people to support local businesses, as well as the great possibilities of future development. Every interested and active business, organizaion, and citizen should have a role in this shared vision of our future!

ITY OF LEAVENWORTH
On behalf of the City of Leavenworth, its residents and businesses, I’d like to welcome newcomers to our community. The City of Leavenworth offers something for everyone: an historic 28-block downtown full of artisan shops, historic homes, modern lofts and new housing developments, a robust offering of individual and family activities and an economic development culture that supports business growth in the region. The City of Leavenworth facilitates several programs to encourage business and job growth for our community. The Small Business Economic Development and Grant Program provides an opportunity for new and existing commercial, retail or industrial businesses. These entities may be reimbursed 50 percent of the costs for development of their business. Owners may be eligible for a dollar-for-dollar matching grant of up to $5,000 for single-unit locations and up to $15,000 for multi-tenant locations. Another program, the Grow Leavenworth County Development Corporation, is a NetWork Kansas E-Community member that makes lowinterest loans not to exceed $45,000 for entrepreneurs for new business expansion within the City limits. Additionally, the City has pursued improvement districts, land acquisition and provided tax abatements to businesses on a case-by-case basis. Contact Assistant City Manager Taylour Tedder for more information about these programs, 913-680-2602 or ttedder@firstcity.org. The City has a strong relationship with the Leavenworth - Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce, Leavenworth Main Street and the Leavenworth County Development Corporation
as well as other municipalities. These entities serve as additional tools to help businesses in our community. The Leavenworth Parks Department has many activities available for children, adults and families. In addition to elegant meeting spaces for up to 300 people, the historic Riverfront Community Center has year-round classes for Yoga, Taekwondo, Water Aerobics and many other fitness classes as well as an indoor pool, gymnasium and workout center. There are over 20 parks consisting of 424 acres with 12 ball fields, 11 picnic shelters, 11 playgrounds, 2 pools, a dog park, a skate park, and several miles of walking and biking trails. A first-class baseball and softball field -- Sportsfield -- is at 20th and Ottawa streets. Bob Dougherty Park, at Second and Kiowa streets, features an outdoor basketball court. Six tennis courts are located at David Brewer Park, 1801 Ottawa St. The courts stay lit until 10 p.m. and open year round. Seasonal restrooms are available as well. Two courts are located at Cody Park, 3003 Shrine Park Rd. Also open year round with lighting until 10 p.m. These courts also have pickle ball lines drawn on them for public use. More information and schedules of planned activities are available in the “First City Connection” publication and the City’s website, www.lvks.org. Lansing... the city with a future. 2019 sees continued orderly growth in the city of Lansing. Recent and planned additions of retail, restaurants, and residential homes highlight news for the “City with a Future.” The City has and continues to offer its full support to new businesses and families attracted to our area. Prime areas for growth include the southwestern part of the City, which features the state-of-the-art Lansing High School. Three new residential developments are in the
planning stages throughout Lansing, featuring more than 253 lots to be built upon in the next five years. In the northwest portion of the City, development continues near the intersection of Desoto and Eisenhower Roads, to complement the medical and assisted living facilities which have chosen to call this area home. Three major road projects in or near the northwest, southwest and southeastern parts of Lansing promise to open the City up even more to future development. Our City leadership places a premium on infrastructure growth and improvement, including major upgrades to our sanitary sewer system as well. Lansing is known throughout the State of Kansas as one of the safest cities for residential living. Several websites have cited Lansing and its Police Department for continuing to maintain a high level of public safety. Since our growth has been constant and orderly, we have managed to build our City without experiencing some of the negative aspects of growth – i.e., increased crime. All of these improvements combine with our geographic advantages of being conveniently close to the major metropolitan area of Kansas City. We are located about twenty-five minutes or fewer by car from just about all of the important features of the region – Kansas City International Airport, downtown Kansas City, Missouri, the Legends Shopping area, Kansas Speedway, Arrowhead and Kauffman stadia to name just a few of the “big city” at-
Mayor Michael Smith tractions that make living in our family-friendly town all the more appealing. As Mayor, I want to invite all potential residential and business newcomers to feel free to contact me or the Lansing professional staff to ask about our great City. I also want to say thank you to those people who live and work here. You are the backbone of our community as we grow toward the end of this decade. We are poised to make the future ours! ORT LEAVENWORTH
Welcome to historic Northeast Kansas! Welcome to historic Northeast Kansas! Residents of Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth, and Lansing are blessed to be a part of a vibrant and growing area firmly rooted in the history of this state and our nation. Fort Leavenworth was established on the banks of the Missouri River in 1827 as the pivotal outpost for the westward expansion of settlers from the East. Twentyseven years later, Leavenworth became the first incorporated city in Kansas and proved vital to the growth of our nation. With the establishment of Lansing in 1878, the three communities, joined by a common bond, stretched nearly ten miles along the Missouri River. Today, the Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth guides a culture of learning and intellectual development that directly affects the Armed Forces of our nation as well as the international community. The Command and General Staff College educates approximately 1,300 Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen each year as well as more than 100 Soldiers from allied countries. This is in addition to the more than 15,000 permanent party service members, civilian personnel and their families that work and/or live on Fort Leavenworth. Fort Leavenworth also serves as home to the Military Correctional Complex consisting of the United States Disciplinary Barracks and the Joint Regional Correctional Facility. As of September 2016, estimates of Fort Leavenworth’s total economic impact to our local community exceeded $2.3 billion. However, the greater role of the Combined
FORT LEAVENWORTH
Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth expands influence across the Army and the globe. The breadth of its responsibility consists of more than 34,000 military and civilian employees throughout the United States, Europe, Korea, and Southwest Asia; eight Army centers of excellence responsible for the education and modernization of our great force; and the education and training of more than 500,000 students annually, including approximately 9,000 international students from 146 countries around the world. Our education system synchronizes the efforts of 37 Army schools and is affliated with 94 civilian universities. I encourage each of you to become active in your neighborhood, your cities, and the greater community. Get out and take the time to get to know your military. Visit the various museums throughout the area to understand where we come from and where we can go in the years ahead. The active citizens and great partnerships among each city are what have always made this area special and will continue to push us successfully into the future. Our community is a great place to live and raise a family. Again, welcome and enjoy this historic corner of Kansas.

ETTER FROM CHAMBER PRESIDENT 2018 was a challenging year. Across the country, it seems, we often found ourselves surrounded by vitriol and divisiveness. Sadly, this outbreak of enmity always seemed to find its way down to the local level, seeping into our daily lives and activities, always finding a way in, like water on concrete. People, some of whom we’ve known our whole lives, suddenly became our “adversaries.” Old friends suddenly became foes.
Brandon M. Johannes, IOM But we, the members, staff, and volunteers of the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce, together, stand out as an example of unity, not divisiveness; we stand out as an example of positivity, not acrimony.
Anytime, Anywhere.
Financial Solutions.
Integrity.
Dedicated Service.
The Chamber of Commerce has always stood above the fray, in that it is the one organization in the community where people always come together. We are a non-partisan, non-sectarian organization built and designed to serve the community, through the representation of and partnership with our members. We do not engage in in attacks, skirmishes, ambushes, or any of another hundred ways of describing the negativity inherent in modern dis-
course. Your party affiliation and voter record do not matter to us. The strength and success of the community do. Together, we celebrate the relationships we have forged with each other, and the relationships this chamber of commerce has forged in this community, dating all the way back to 1916, when it was incorporated. We exist, indeed, to show the world how government, education, business, charities, non-profit organizations, and individuals choose to stand together and rise above the negativity surrounding us. We, together, are a living, breathing example of the best humanity has to offer. I therefore challenge anyone on the outside looking in to question what we’ve built, and I invite them to take their negativity to another community, because in Leavenworth, Lansing, and Fort Leavenworth, it simply has no place. We will continue to work together to build a better, brighter future for our community; and I, for one, am proud to be a part of those efforts. Brandon M. HAMBER’S PROGRAM of WORK
Committees & Councils:
Military Affairs Council The goal of the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber’s Military Affairs Council (MAC) is to advance the pro-business climate in the area through military affairs initiatives, and to maintain and enhance the business community’s relationship with Fort Leavenworth. The Military Affairs Council works to grow and sustain not only Fort Leavenworth, but other Department of Defense operations in the area. The MAC functions as a liaison between the local military and business communities, implementing programs which provide greater interaction between Chamber members and DOD/military personnel. The MAC hosts various events throughout the year that help to further our community relationships and honor military service. MAC Meetings take place at noon on the first Tuesday of each month; meeting locations vary month to month and are hosted by Chamber members. Military & Business Socials (MAC Socials) take place on the first Wednesday of the second month of each quarter (February, May, August, & November). Each Social is sponsored and hosted by a Chamber Member, and usually takes place between 5:00 and 7:00 in the evening. Serving on the Military Affairs Council is open to all interested Chamber members, their employees, and/or volunteers.
Government Affairs Committee Advocacy on behalf of our members and business community is a priority of the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce. As such, Chamber members have full time advocates fighting for their 16 2019-2020 Business Directory and Community Profile
interests in the political arena on issues that affect their business and other activities. Our Government Affairs Committee is fundamental in enhancing our community’s business climate. Throughout the state legislative session, the Chamber hosts a Legislative Update Series, which provides the community at large an opportunity to hear from our elected officials in the State Legislature about the work they’ve undertaken on our behalf in Topeka. The Government Affairs Committee also works to bring other updates, like a State of the Community Address, to the community at large. Serving on the Government Affairs Committee is open to all interested Chamber members, their employees, and/or volunteers.
Business Development Council Throughout our country’s history, Chambers of Commerce have been charged with providing informational and educational opportunities not only to their members, but to their communities in general. The Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce has always worked toward the goal of arranging for just such events for businesses and other members in our area. Now, the Chamber has launched a council, chaired and staffed by Chamber members, to continue this tradition. Who better than members of the Chamber of Commerce themselves to come up with ideas for educational and informational programming? We hope to be able to bring attention to topics which will aid as wide a cross-section of our members and other local businesses & organizations as possible, be it small business assistance, insurance questions, financial planning, succession planning, social media, networking…the sky’s the limit! We’ve tried to bring in folks both from the business sector AND the education sector; that way, truly, the best of both worlds can work together on identifying resources and designing programming! If you’re interested in submitting ideas for programming, or serving on the committee, let the Chamber know!
Operation International The Operation International Committee is a program of the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce which fosters international understanding and creates rich cultural diversity by providing civilian sponsors for the international military students attending the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Operation International’s goal is the same today as it was in its beginning in 1952: to provide a warm welcome to the international officers and their families upon their arrival in the community and to sustain that hospitality throughout their year with us. An all-volunteer effort, Operation International is directly responsible for providing cultural exchange and the beginning of lifelong world-wide friendships! This program is truly a unique experience to the Leavenworth-Lansing community and provides our citizens with the opportunity to experience a vast collection of cultures. Serving on the Operation International Committee is open to all interested Chamber members, their employees, and/or volunteers, but due to the intimate and intricate nature of their work, OI does not often seek new committee members. Instead, the best way to be involved is to sponsor an international officer! Some families have been sponsoring these officers and their families for more than fifty years! This is a unique, rewarding opportunity afforded to Chamber members, and is a worthwhile endeavor to undertake!
Chamber Programs:

2019 - 2020 CHAMBER DIRECTORY CONTENT
Our most avid, dedicated volunteers comprise our Chamber Ambassadors. Our Ambassadors publicly represent the Chamber of Commerce by supporting its current members, welcoming its new members, and by helping to recruit future members. You’ll find our Chamber Ambassadors at all of our events, but most prominently at our Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies! A tribute to Ambassadors past, our newly resurrected Ambassadors show true Chamber spirit by turning out in their bright red coats and Chamber gear! Originally known as “The Red Coats,” they’re back, bigger and better than ever, ready to serve the Chamber in its mission of supporting the community! Do you have what it takes to be an Ambassador for the Chamber?
Women’s Division of the Chamber The mission of the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce is, and always has been, to empower women in professional roles through programs which will mentor and advance leadership and growth opportunities through education and networking. The Women’s Division constantly and diligently pledges to support activities which foster leadership and advance the roles of women in the Leavenworth-Lansing Area while acting in unity with the LeavenworthLansing Area Chamber of Commerce. We strive to provide education and training for business, personal, and professional growth for women of all ages; networking opportunities; recognition of the contributions, accomplishments, and leadership of women in our community; and community service activities and projects which capture the spirit of our community-minded mission. Throughout the year, the Women’s Division seeks to provide programs and services which are aimed at empowering our local professional women: u The ATHENA Award recognizes women who excel in their professional careers, leadership and community service. u An Annual Women in Leadership Confer ence Monthly networking luncheons that also serve as educational opportunities
u Scholarships provided to local women each Spring Women’s Division Luncheons take place, beginning at about 11:45 am, on the fourth Tuesday of every month (with the exception of the ATHENA Award Luncheon, Leadership Summit, and Scholarship Award Luncheon), and are open to women who are members of the Women’s Division (guests, of course, are welcome to visit and see what we’re all about!) Membership in the Women’s Division is an exclusive option for those women who are, or who are employed by, members of the Chamber of Commerce.
Young Professionals of the Chamber The Young Professionals of the Chamber aims to attract and retain “younger” talent to our area while developing the next generation of leaders. YPC offers a wealth of opportunities for young professionals to network, give back to the community and grow both personally and professionally! Just some of what YPC offers include networking opportunities, learning about the local business community, opportunities to socialize, professional development opportunities, mentoring opportunities, and community involvement & service opportunities. Young Professionals Socials take place on the third Thursday of the month and are sponsored and hosted by Chamber/YPC members. Membership in YPC is open to all Chamber members, their employees, and/or volunteers. Join the group for their next social and see what they are all about! Leadership Leavenworth – Lansing The Chamber of Commerce initiated the Leadership Leavenworth-Lansing program in 1985 when local government, schools, and community-based organizations reported difficulty in filling positions on committees, boards of directors and other responsible organizations that rely on citizen input and participation to make decisions for the benefit of the community as a whole. It was determined that many citizens were reluctant to volunteer because of lack of familiarity with
the issues and organizations and a feeling that they were not prepared or qualified to participate in deciding community issues. The initial thrust of the Leadership program was to create an environment within which individuals willing to make a commitment of time and energy to the community were made familiar with community organizations and issues and urged to participate in leadership positions with confidence. This remains an underlying basis of the Leadership program and its curriculum. The mission of Leadership Leavenworth – Lansing is to educate and develop community leaders. The Goal of the Leadership Leavenworth – Lansing Program is to establish a network of community leaders and provide upcoming leaders an opportunity to grow and develop with the guidance and assistance of those currently in leadership positions. The Leadership Leavenworth-Lansing Committee’s approach to the Leadership program is based on the concept that there are a variety of ways for citizens to become involved in the community. This approach, which is exemplified by the multi-faceted curriculum, seems to best facilitate identification of potential leaders by providing areas that stimulate interest and/or align with personal expertise. Accordingly, the course includes sessions on local history, the local economy, the legal and legislative systems, health and social service agencies, civic and community groups, education programs and technology. The individual skill which align with these topics include stewardship, team building, boards and committees, meeting management, consensus decision making, communication, ethics and change process. Each Leadership class selects and executes a class project. Participation in the Leadership Leavenworth – Lansing Program is open exclusively to members of the Chamber of Commerce, their employees, and/or volunteers. If chosen to be in the class, participants generally meet one Friday per month, beginning in September, and ending in April. USM is a highly respected applied liberal arts Catholic university with more than 30 undergraduate programs, nine graduate programs, and a doctoral program—and a growing focus on health care education. Classes are offered on campuses in Leavenworth and Overland Park, and in several formats: traditional, evening-accelerated, and online. USM is committed to academic excellence. Students benefit from small classes, providing true one-on-one attention from expert instructors—taught by professors, not teaching assistants. The Princeton Review has repeatedly named the university as a “Best Midwestern College” based on USM’s first-rate academics and positive feedback from students and parents.* The university is currently focused on an important mission: expanding health care education offerings to better meet society’s ever-growing need for more and better trained health care professionals. The focus on meeting community needs dates back to USM’s roots— reflecting the values of the Sisters of Charity. In 1858, the sisters arrived in Leavenworth with the three missions: education, care of the sick, and care of children. Just one year later, the sisters established an orphanage and academy for young girls. The academy moved to USM’s current home on 200 rolling acres in 1870, and flourished serving the young women of the frontier states and territories. In 1923, the sisters opened Saint Mary College, a junior college for women. The college became a four-year institution in 1932, went co-educational in 1988, and became a university in 2003. Today, the campus continues to grow, with new programs and facilities and record-high enrollment. Students at Saint Mary thrive on an active campus, with a variety of clubs and organizations and weekly student life events. USM studentathletes compete in 21 varsity sports, including co-ed eSports, and men’s and women’s swimming and wrestling programs. USM student-athletes are a part of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC)—National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II. The Saint Mary Spires are known for their successes both on the field and in the classroom, as well as living out the NAIA “Champions of Character” values. Learn more about Saint Mary athletics at GoSpires.com. The university also hosts many cultural events on campus, like its annual Lincoln Event, fine arts concerts, theatre productions, and student and community art shows. Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital
In 1865, at the close of the Civil War, Harriet Cushing and her husband moved to Leavenworth. They saw homeless and fatherless victims of the war and decided to build an orphanage: the Home of the Friendless. As she continued to serve the growing Leavenworth population, Mrs. Cushing envisioned a full-service medical facility. By 1894, she had raised enough money to open the first city-owned hospital at 637 Marshall Street. The new hospital needed well-trained nurses, so Mrs. Cushing opened a nursing school as well. When she died in 1897, Harriet Cushing was considered one of the most influential women in Kansas, having spent much of her life as a philanthropist, suffragette, and champion of health care. The hospital itself continued to grow through the 20th century, including a new four-story Cushing Memorial Hospital in 1931 at the facility’s current site, 711 Marshall Street. Additional expansion continued through the 1950s and ‘60s. By the turn of another century, hospital leadership engaged Saint Luke’s Health System in 2001 to provide management services. And recognizing the need for stronger alignment and a broader scope of services, the local hospital board authorized Cushing’s transfer of ownership to Saint Luke’s in 2006. More than 120 years later, the hospital’s doctors, nurses, and staff honor Harriet Cushing’s memory by staying true to her motto: “Dedicated to caring.” In 2013, the hospital’s name officially changed from Cushing Memorial Hospital to Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital. The change accompanied the health system’s
Saint John Hospital
Saint John Hospital has been a vibrant part of the Leavenworth and Lansing Communities since opening its doors in 1864. The first private hospital in the State of Kansas, it was opened under the direction of Sister Joanna Bruner, the first trained nurse
announcement of a 5-year, $20 million investment in services and facilities, increasing local access to the highest quality of care. Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital is a comprehensive health care facility offering a full range of services, including, general surgery, cardiology, outpatient rehabilitation, sleep lab, diabetes center, imaging services that include cardioscans, 3-D mammography, pulmonary services including bronchoscopes and Home Care & Hospice. Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital offers 54 licensed beds, is an Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital, and is the busiest provider of 24/7 emergency services in Leavenworth County. Cushing also offers a number of services not found elsewhere in Leavenworth County, including the area’s only maternity center, outpatient chemotherapy, MRI services, orthopedic surgery program, and eICU. At Saint Luke’s Cardiovascular Consultants clinics in Leavenworth and Lansing, patients receive the same high-quality cardiology care from the same doctors who have earned Saint Luke’s Hospital and Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute a worldwide reputation for excellence. Saint Luke’s cardiologists provide patients both inpatient and outpatient care, including a specialized women’s heart clinic. Cushing Medical Plaza in Leavenworth and Eisenhower Medical Plaza in Lansing provide in the state, and surely the first woman in the Western Territory to be the administrator of a hospital. Since that time, professional excellence, leadership, and a readiness to respond to the needs of the community have been hallmarks of the hospital. Today, Saint John Hospital is part of Prime Healthcare and is accredited by the Joint Commission. Saint John Hospital has an unparalleled tradition of providing excellent care for patients and families. Located in Leavenworth, KS., Saint John is home to quality physicians and compassionate staff. Services include State-of-the-art 24/7 Emergency Care, Senior Behavioral Health Center, Intensive Care Services, Outpatient Surgery Services, in-patient medical
family medicine at Saint Luke’s Primary Care– Cushing and Saint Luke’s Primary Care–Lansing, as well as a range of specialty clinics. Expansion and renovation has been constant at the hospital. Recent years have brought a renovated radiology department, maternity unit, an updated 12-bed medical / surgical unit and 4-bed ICU (all private rooms and private bathrooms), and an expanded and fully renovated 12-bed emergency department. In 2018, Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital updated the lab, with a more patient friendly blood draw location, as well as investing and upgrading our radiology department with a new nuclear medicine camera and bone density scanner. Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital is a faithbased, not-for-profit, locally-owned medical facility employing more than 230 people. For more information on any of the hospital’s services, or to connect with a Saint Luke’s doctor, call Saint Luke’s Concierge at 816-932-5100 or visit saintlukescushing.com. care, Imaging Services, Rehabilitation and Laboratory Services. To provide outstanding care to the community, Saint John Hospital’s medical staff features more than 100 physicians in various medical specialties including neurology, cardiology and surgery. Saint John, along with its affiliate Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas has expanded primary and specialty medical practices throughout Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties. Saint John was recently named one of only 40 Five-Star Hospitals in Kansas by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. As the only Five-Star Hospital in Leavenworth, patients and families can be assured the hospital meets high quality, safety and patient satisfaction metrics. Saint John Hospital is a part of Prime Healthcare Service, an award-winning national hospital system with 44 acute-care hospitals in 14 states providing more than 43,000 jobs.

VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System
Our Story The Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Leavenworth, Kansas had its beginning in 1884. The City of Leavenworth was notified that the Board of Managers for the National Home accepted its offer of 640 acres of land and $50,000 for use in developing the site for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. The VA Medical Center existed as a Home under the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers from 1885 until 1930. In 1930, Congress authorized the President to consolidate and coordinate government activities affecting war veterans. The Home became one of many field stations which were merged into a new federal government agency known as the Veterans Administration. In 1985, the Leavenworth VA operated a 447-bed hospital, a 45-bed nursing home, and a 650-bed domiciliary. All but the most complicated medical and surgical specialties were covered in-house, with the rest of the specialties within easy reach of Kansas City. On March 15, 1989, the Veterans Administration was elevated to cabinet status, becoming the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dwight D. Eisenhower VAMC and the Colmery-O’Neil VAMC (Topeka, Kansas) were integrated in 1998 forming what is now, the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System (VAEKHCS) consisting of two medical centers and nine rural based clinics spanning 20,000 square miles throughout 37 counties in Eastern Kansas and Northeast Missouri. Today, VA Eastern Kansas serves over 41,500 veteran enrollees with a 330-milliondollar budget handling over 400,000 outpatient visits per year and averages 15,00o to 19,000 patient encounters per week. VAEKHCS employs over 1900 healthcare professionals and
Munson Army Health Center
Munson Army Health Center (MAHC) is an outpatient medical facility located at 550 Pope Avenue on Fort Leavenworth. Munson provides safe, effective, patientcentered and highly reliable healthcare that enables Soldier readiness, promotes Total Army Family health, strengthens the ready medical force, and supports the Fort Leavenworth community. Our vision is to be an innovative leader in Soldier and Family health readiness. Munson services include family medicine, pediatrics, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology and behavioral health. MAHC provides “A One Stop Shop” for Soldier Readiness that consolidates optometry, audiology, physical exams and immunization/allergy services for 26 2019-2020 Business Directory and Community Profile
administrative staff with over 600 volunteers. Leavenworth’s Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center itself employs approximately 735, has a 38-bed hospital, a 40-bed nursing home, a 150-bed domiciliary, and sees over 100,000 outpatient visits a year. One of our largest challenges at VA is the fight to end Veteran suicide and VA Eastern Kansas is committed to win this fight. A significant risk factor for Veteran suicide is the loss of belonging that occurs upon discharge from the military and transition into civilian life. Nationally, of the 20 Veterans who take their lives, only 14 are enrolled in VA healthcare. As a VA community we partner with the military community (thereby strengthening the relationships with active duty counterparts and increasing the ease of transition from military to civilian care) and educate and mobilize our surrounding community to go beyond thank you. If you are a veteran or know of a veteran in crisis, please contact the Veteran’s Crisis
active duty Soldiers. The Readiness Center is also the place for all beneficiary immunizations/allergy services. To improve musculoskeletal recovery and injury prevention, MAHC expanded the physical therapy department. The new Rehabilitation Center now includes chiropractic, occupational health and executive wellness programs (CGSC students only). Munson is also the home for the Fort Leavenworth Public Health. The FTLV Public Health Department offers Tobacco/Vaping Cessation classes monthly, Occupational Health and other preventive medicine services. The ultimate goal of VAEKHCS is to be the healthcare of choice for Veterans while working with community partners, stakeholders, veteran organizations and others to enhance the medical care, mental health, and wellbeing of Veterans and their family. VA Eastern Kansas is grateful to the community for its support as we continue to make strategic and operational investments in equipment and technology, maximize the use of our physical layout, make it easier for Veterans to access care, while emphasizing education and staff development – all focused on being better in the Future than we are Today, while never losing focus on our Veterans and the employees who make VAEKHCS what it is today – and will be in the Future. Since its founding in 1881 by Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been dedicated to serving people in need as a non-government, volunteer based organization. Even while the Red Cross adapts to meet the changing needs of those being served, it stays true to its core mission to provide disaster relief in the U.S. and throughout the world and also services to Armed Forces members and their families. From home fires to massive destruction like the recent rash of hurricanes, storms and wildfires, Red Cross volunteers provide comfort, support and assistance to those in need. The Red Cross developed the first nationwide civilian blood program in the 1940s and still provides more than 40 percent of the blood products in this country. Today, as throughout its history, the Red Cross depends on the generous contribution of time, blood and money to support its lifesaving services and programs.
Founded in 1986 by the Sisters of Charity, Saint Vincent Clinic has served the primary medical needs of the most vulnerable members of the Leavenworth community – those without health insurance. As the only primary medical care safety net clinic in Leavenworth County, Saint Vincent Clinic serves uninsured Leavenworth County residents who have incomes at or below 175% ($45,063 for a family of four) of the Federal Poverty Level. Saint Vincent Clinic provides primary medical care and assists patients in getting the specialty care and medications they need. In 2018, Saint Vincent Clinic saw nearly 400 patients. We provided more than 3,000 patient visits and helped our patients access specialty care, well-woman care, labs and x-rays, and prescription medications worth nearly $1M. Top diagnoses seen at the clinic are anxiety/depression, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes. Primary care services include diagnosis and treatment of common or chronic illnesses, care of minor injuries, and education about health, nutrition and medication compliance. Clinic patients are seen on-site by a staff: a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, medical director or a volunteer on-site physician. The clinic helps patients get their medications by enrolling them in pharmaceutical company indigent care programs, providing sample medications, and using reduced-cost prescriptions at area 28 2019-2020 Business Directory and Community Profile
pharmacies. The clinic also accesses medications through the Kansas Unused Medications Program that allows for unused medications from select care facilities (with a controlled storage unit) are donated back to a central repository so that qualified clinics like ours can use the medications before they expire. We also receive some private grants to support the purchase of acute care medications that are not available otherwise. Patients who need care beyond the scope of the clinic are referred to a medical specialist, dentist or optometrist. These are local physicians who have agreed to see patients for free or on a reduced cost basis. Laboratory and xray services are provided through cooperation with radiologists, pathologists, Saint Luke‘s Cushing Hospital and Saint John Hospital. The Leavenworth Lions Club underwrites patient vision care. Founded on the belief that healthcare is a basic human right, the goal of Saint Vincent Clinic is to improve the health of the community it serves, one patient at a time, and to provide primary medical care together with educating patients to become prevention-oriented rather than disease-oriented. The clinic cannot single-handedly offer medical care to every uninsured person in Leavenworth County, but our services significantly influence the lives of some of the community’s most vulnerable members.

Leavenworth County Humane Society, Inc. Is among the first humane organizations in Kansas, founded in 1885 in Leavenworth, with the purpose of “prevention and punishment of cruelty to children and animals, and better enforcement of the laws relating thereto.” LCHS, Inc. is the only organization working to build and operate a 21st century no-kill pet animal shelter to serve all Leavenworth County residents. In August 2016, LCHS, Inc. opened an office/temporary shelter at 1205 Rear N. Main Street, Lansing. Rented from the Leavenworth County Co-op, these 1200 square feet provide a place to care for many of the county’s lost, abandoned and unwanted pets. Unfortunately, it is only about 1/10 the size needed to serve the growing population of Leavenworth County. Despite space limitations, LCHS, Inc. has been able to serve nearly 1000 pet animals over the past 3 years. LCHS, Inc. contracts with the cities of Basehor, Lansing and Linwood to provide intake and shelter services for pets their officers impound. By far, the majority of pets served since opening the temporary shelter have been from unincorporated areas of Leavenworth County. Work continues to develop the capital campaign to raise funds to build and open a 12,000 square foot facility on the organization’s property in the Lansing Business Center. J.E. Dunn Construction (KCMO) & Treanor Architects (Lawrence) are the design build team for the shelter. The first phase of development will be a large dog play yard with shelter for events. In 2018, LCHS, Inc. launched a partnership with US Penitentiary – Leavenworth in which inmates learn to be dog trainers, and dogs from LCHS, Inc. learn skills to prepare them to be Canine Good Citizens. LCHS, Inc.’s operations are primarily funded by donations and fundraisers. Bow Wow Film Festival (as part of the First City Film Festival) in March, Pints for Paws in May, Go Dog Go in August and Howl ‘N’ Meow in October provide a wide variety of entertaining events. Cash donations are most welcome and may be made by mail or online thru the organization’s Facebook page or website via PayPal. Volunteers are the primary workforce at LCHS Inc., doing everything from fundraising to kennel care to transporting to fostering, running the office and maintaining the facility. There are unlimited opportunities for adults to serve! Youth over the age of 12 may volunteer with a parent or guardian. Contact LCHS, Inc. for details - LvnCoHS@live.com or 913-250-0506. LCHS, Inc. Is the only animal not-for-profit member of the Chamber. “Being part of the Chamber is important for two reasons,” says Executive Director Crystal Swann Blackdeer. “Friendships, networking and partnering with other Chamber members is the best. We also value the opportunity to support local business and the business community through our Chamber membership,” adds Blackdeer. The First City Film Festival Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2017 to support and develop the artistic appreciation, educational opportunities and growth of independent film in and around Leavenworth, Kansas. The second annual First City Film Festival was March 21-24, 2019 in downtown Leavenworth. Over the four days, the festival screened 65 films from across the United States and 10 different countries around the world. More than 50 filmmakers attended the festival, either as part of the juried competition, the festival panel discussions or in support of other filmmakers. Most of the filmmakers were from out of town and a few traveled in from outside the Kansas City area. Three of the filmmakers were Leavenworth County High School students who submitted films to the First City Student Short category.
More than $1700 in cash awards and prizes were given to filmmakers as part of the 2019 festival and more than 180 tickets were sold to individuals attending either the entire festival (VIP Passes) or individual screenings. Going forward, the foundation is working to expand the festival as well as expand the reach into and collaboration with schools in Leavenworth County. Workshops, other educational opportunities and scholarships for students will be the motivation to expand the festival in the coming years. The next First City Film Festival is scheduled for March 26-29, 2020. Festival staff will begin taking film submissions and begin the sponsorship drive in the middle of August, 2019. United Way’s mission: to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. To do this we will: Ignite a worldwide social movement, and thereby mobilize millions to action—to give, advocate and volunteer to improve the conditions in which they live. United Way of Leavenworth County is in a process of transition. Traditionally thought of as simply a fundraising organization, United Way in Leavenworth is moving away from an emphasis on dollar amounts and moving towards a focus of impacting critical community needs. United Way has conducted needs assessments in three areas: health, education, and the financial stability affecting every person in our community. The United Way of Leavenworth County is proud to work with a number of local partners; for more information on them, and on how to get involved, please visit our website: www. unitedwaylvco.org! Through programs such as the FamilyWize program, the United Way Born Learning initiative, Student United Way, and a host of others, we continue to serve those in need in Leavenworth County, working to build a better, brighter future for all. Call us today at (913) 682-2592, or visit us at 400 Shawnee in Downtown Leavenworth!
The goals of the Leavenworth Youth Achievement Center are to provide low-income and at-risk school age youth the life skills necessary to grow into productive adults. If you want to make a difference in the life of a child… Nobody longs for a safe and loving family more than a child in foster care. Court-appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers are empowered by the courts to help make this dream a reality. CASA volunteers not only bring positive change to the lives of these vulnerable children, but also their children and generations to come. And in doing so, CASA volunteers enrich their own lives as well. The CASA mission is to protect children today for stronger families tomorrow by providing trained, court appointed volunteers to advocate for the best interest of children and youth. We envision for every child who needs us; a trained advocate, a safe home and a promising future. We also envision a community where all children grow up with pleasant memories of childhood and healthy relationships with the people they call family. What Do CASA Volunteers Do? CASA volunteers listen first. Then they act. Volunteers get to know the child by talking with everyone in that child’s life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them. Who Can Be a Volunteer? You do not have to be a lawyer or a social worker to be a volunteer. Individuals from all walks of life are welcome. We are simply looking for people who care about children and are committed to making a difference. As a volunteer, you will be thoroughly trained and well supported by professional staff to help you through each case. You must pass a background check, participate in a 35-hour pre-service training course and agree to stay with a case until it is closed (a year and a half on average). Interested in helping children but not ready to commit to becoming a volunteer advocate? There are many other ways you can volunteer for the CASA programs. You can become a trained supervised visitation monitor, assist with administrative duties, help with fundraising or special events. Another program to come under the CASA umbrella in 2017 is the Leavenworth Child Advocacy Center. The Leavenworth Child Advocacy Center provides forensic interviews and advocacy services to children and families involved in allegations of sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect and/or witnessing violence. The LCAC also provides community and educational outreach to local schools and professional agencies.
Interested? Have questions or ready to get involved? Call (913) 651-6440 or email Jere@casalvks.org or submit your application online at www.kansascasa.org/

While over 4,600 pounds of fresh produce and protein is brought to the area and distributed to those in need through the Fresh Mobile Pantry each month. These efforts in Leavenworth County support Second Harvest’s mission; which is to feed the hungry in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas through a network of Partner Agencies and direct service programs and engage the region in the fight to end hunger.

The Foundation was formed in 1980 by community leaders with a goal to financially assist the hospital and has continued to do that for almost 40 years. The Foundation is now committed to funding programs that will serve the health care needs of the people of this community, especially focusing on prevention. The Foundation recently funded the state-of-the-art 3-D Mammography equipment and as a follow-up now offers free mammograms to all uninsured women of the community through its “Mammogram for Every Woman” program. In addition, the Foundation’s “Compassionate Care Program” continues to provide the unmet needs of patients leaving the hospital. We provide transportation, medications, equipment, or other necessities to ensure that patients will have a successful transition home and help prevent reoccurring hospitalizations. The Foundation’s highly successful “Stayin’ Alive” program, which targets women, has provided eight informative, prevention programs. Program topics included healthy eating, breast cancer, heart disease, skin cancer, diabetes, and women’s health through the ages. Our Athletic Heart Care Screenings provides support to area student athletes from Leavenworth High and the University of St. Mary. Each year sudden cardiac arrest takes the life of an estimated 100 young athletes who have no known previous heart condition. In 2018, we added two new funds to our programming: The Baby Steps Fund offering new parent support, education, and supplies to ensure infants are safe and healthy; Enhancing Nursing Excellence will provide our nurses with tools and education needed to improve the quality of care for our patients. For more information about the Foundation, please contact Lori O’Donnell, Development Officer at 913-684-1282 or lorodonnell1@saint-lukes.org 32 2019-2020 Business Directory and Community Profile
