Kansas Scenic Byways The Frontier Military Historic Byway extends roughly 167 miles tying Fort Leavenworth at the north to Fort Scott at the south, and then onward to the oklahoma border from Fort Scott. it follows K-5 east out of Leavenworth to i-435, then follows U.S. 69 and alternate U.S. 69 south to the state line. The route approximates the old military trail used by the army to transport troops and supplies between the frontier forts. The Glacial Hills Scenic Byway begins at the intersection of K-7 and K-92 in Leavenworth and extends 63 miles north through the Glacial Hills of northeast Kansas. Glaciers once covered the northeast corner of Kansas and when they receded north, they left behind a unique, scenic landscape of rolling, wooded hills, rock-strewn soil and valleys with clear, running streams. The byway traverses atchison, Doniphan and Leavenworth Counties and visits the communities of atchison, Leavenworth, Troy and White Cloud, representing the earliest days of pioneer settlement of Kansas along the Missouri River.

Leavenworth is the only city in Kansas that is located on two byways: The Frontier Military Historic Byway and the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway. www.travelks.com/ksbyways

Buffalo Soldier Monument Grant and Stimson Avenues During the american Civil War, the U.S. Government formed regiments known as the United States Colored Troops. in 1866 Congress reorganized the army and authorized the formation of two regiments of black cavalry soldiers as the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry and four infantry regiments designated as the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st infantry Regiments. The 10th Cavalry was organized September 21,

1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas with Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson as Commanding officer. The 10th Cavalry served in the following campaigns: indian Wars, War with Spain, Philippine insurrection and World War ii. They were inactivated March 20, 1944. The Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry performed duties such as building forts and roads, riding shotgun on stagecoaches and mail routes, es-

corting cattle drives and wagon trains, protecting the builders of the railroads, installing telegraph lines and protecting the settlers in areas plagued by bandits. The american West has fascinated people all over the world since settlers first crossed the Mississippi, however, unless it includes the contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers, any story about “how the West was Won” is incomplete without their story.

6888TH CENTRAL POSTAL DIRECTORY BATTALION Grant and Stimson Avenues The 6888th Battalion’s mission was to sort and redirect the delivery of the millions of backlogged letters and packages that had all but ceased to be delivered during WWii. Some of the mail had been delayed by as much as two years. They were given six months to fix the backlog and they completed their mission in three. WWW.VISITLEAVENWORTHKS.COM

Berlin Wall Grant and Stimson Avenues This monument memorializes the historic barrier that separated West and east Berlin during the Cold War. after the destruction of the Berlin Wall in 1989, concrete sections were given to President Ronald Reagan. Three sections were subsequently donated to Fort Leavenworth because of the worldwide influence of the U.S. army Command and General Staff College. The design of the memorial expresses three themes: a “falling position” representing the crumbling of the wall; a horizontal position representing the Wall’s destruction; and a vertical position representing that democracy stands. When it comes to dining, Leavenworth offers options for every kind of palate. Restaurants here are located in historic as well as scenic settings. a few highlights include Marfield’s irish Pub, established in 1903 in a building that was originally a carriage house for the Ward Mansion; Karma Cakes, which can provide specialty cupcakes for any occasion, and TenPenny Restaurant & Bar, a restaurant and caterer tucked away in the middle of town. Flavors from all over the world can be found in

Leavenworth. For an asian flair try osaka Sushi Restaurant or Hyundai Korean Restaurant; if it is Mexican

night visit Tampico authentic Mexican Restaurant or acapulco Mexican Restaurant and if the kids want pizza

and pasta Luigi’s italian Restaurant and Mama Mia’s fit the bill. For an old West feel the family can belly up to the bar at Grinders High noon. The Depot, another blast from the past, is not just a restaurant — it is a national landmark. The site used to be a former train station that began service in 1887. For dessert, stop by Sis’ Sweets & Café for some delectable cookies. This is just a small sampling of all there is to dine on in Leavenworth. There is something here to appeal to everyone’s tastes.
