South county expected to swell in population By MARK ROUNTREE mrountree@leavenworthtimes.com

Southern Leavenworth County is experiencing a growth spurt. Estimates are that the county population will swell to more than 80,000 in the next 10 years, and much of the initial growth will be in the extended northwest corridor out of Kansas City and into the Basehor area. “We are situated in the bullseye of that growth pattern,” Mike Reilly said. Reilly is the owner of The Reilly Company. “And I don’t think we’ve seen the start of it yet. The county in 10 years will substantially change. Clearly, south county has been a beneficiary of that growth. Basehor has already seen a lot of growth.” Reilly said the area’s growth spurt is a result of several factors, including proximity to the Kansas City metro area and Interstate 70 and Interstate 435. Other factors are that Basehor has affordable housing with a smalltown way of life and high-quality schools. “It’s a great place to be,” he said.

Reilly said Kansas City has grown in every direction except the western corridor. And that growth pattern is well underway. Reilly said his firm recognized several years ago that because of the growth of the area, Basehor would be out of inventory for new homes. So two years ago, the firm purchased 140 acres in the area of 158th Street and Prairie Garden Parkway. The development, named Grayhawk, will result in 400-plus new homes to include family residences, estates and villas. Phase 1 of the development, to include 31 lots, is underway. Phase 2 will be 44 lots. Phase 3 will be 38 more lots. Reilly is also working on 12 acres on State Avenue and 158th Street on a commercial development. It will be called One 58 Plaza and include a variety of businesses, including restaurants, banks and gas stations. “We anticipate it will become one of the major commercial developments in Basehor,” he said.

Community colleges have much to offer

Kelly Rogge is the public information officer at Kansas City Kansas Community College. In this Q&A, she talks about National Community College Awareness Month in April. What is National Community College Awareness Month? National Community College Awareness Month is an opportunity to celebrate the successes that happen every day at community colleges. Community colleges serve a diverse student population and offer flexibility that may not be found at a four-year institution. It is also a much more cost effective option for students to take advantage of in order to reach their educational goals. Community colleges play an important role in the communities they serve and should be recognized for their impact on the lives of students. How are community colleges celebrating the month? Every community college celebrates Community College Awareness Month differently. Kansas

how KCKCC and community colleges have impacted the lives of our students, staff, faculty and alumni. How many community colleges are there in the nation? According to the American Association of Community Colleges, there are more than 1,100 community colleges in the United States. These community colleges enroll almost half of all undergraduate students in the country.

four-year institution, oftentimes without having to leave their high school. KCKCC offers both concurrent and dual enrollment options for area high school students. Concurrent enrollment courses are those taught at the high schools during the normal school day by approved instructors. Dual enrollment courses are classes offered at the high school or college campus and may be taught by a qualified high school teacher or college professor. Through KCKCC’s partnership with the Kansas City, Kansas, public school district, high school students can take a variety of college-level courses at no cost. Why are community colleges a benefit to adults? A traditional four-year college or university just isn’t for everyone. Community colleges offer both two-year degrees as well as one-year certificate programs in a variety of areas. This allows students to ease their way into higher education without getting overwhelmed.

Community colleges also have lower tuition and fees compared to a four-year institution, making it much more cost effective to earn college credit. And with KCKCC’s numerous transfer agreements with four-year colleges, students do not have to worry if their credits will transfer should they want to continue on to earn a bachelor’s degree. There is also greater flexibility when attending community colleges since courses are offered during the day, evening and online. That flexibility is crucial to working adults who may have to work during the day and complete coursework at night. How can people learn more about community colleges? A great resource to learn more about community colleges is the American Association of Community Colleges, www.aacc.nche.edu To learn more about KCKCC, visit www.kckcc.edu – Mark Rountree

Countdown begins to Easter Sunday By MARK ROUNTREE mrountree@leavenworthtimes.com

The Easter season is regarded as one of the most devout times of the liturgical calendar. The Easter season began with Ash Wednesday on March 6. The season of Lent runs for approximately 40 days and 40 nights each year. Many people will give up something or fast during Lent. This year, Easter will be celebrated on April 21. Many children will be decked out in their finest apparel on Easter Sunday. Many Christian schools will celebrate the run-up to Easter with special activities and events. For instance, at Xavier Catholic School in Leavenworth, the celebration began in early March with stations of the cross at classroom doors. Students also are raising money for underprivileged children in South America with a Pennies for Peru fundraiser. Students also will participate in a prayer exchange with other students. Numerous Easter egg hunts will be held in the area. A big one each year

candy-filled eggs scattered on the field. There will be 10 golden eggs that will reward the finders with special Easter baskets of goodies. Easter dinner is a traditional meal enjoyed by many families. Probably the most popular main course is glazed ham with side dishes of scalloped potatoes, creamy spring peas, green bean casserole, deviled eggs and a wide range of pies and cakes. Many bakers will get creative and make an Easter bunny cake topped with coconut and featuring big bunny ears. Many churches and shelters will be hosting free meals on Easter Sunday.

is the Easter Festival and Egg Hunt. This year’s event is slated for April 13 at 10th Avenue Park in Leavenworth. The event is a production of Leavenworth Parks and Recreation in partnership with Sagasu Family Martial Arts. The festival includes games, music, dancing, carnival food, petting zoo, bounce houses and face painting

for children. Vendors will offer a variety of activities and games for the children. Of course, the Easter Bunny will be in attendance and lead the Easter parade before the big hunt. The egg hunt is for children 12-under. They will be split up in age divisions for the massive egg hunt, which will include approximately 8,000

Season of success for Bobcats By LUKE PETERSON lpeterson@leavenworthtimes.com

When the final buzzer sounded, the student section erupted at the White Auditorium in Emporia. Their team just won the state title in boys’ basketball in their first year in 5A. The students, along with the parents and other fans in attendance, cheered as the players and coaches celebrated on the court. On the other side of the court was the other team. The losing side was quiet with fans and players distraught and filled with tears. The 2018-19 season was officially over. The winning team was Andover Central. The runner-up was the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats. While the Bobcats fell short in the state championship game in a 58-47 loss, it was still a year that the Bobcats will remember for years to come. The Bobcats went 21-3, including a winning streak of 13 games and went undefeated in conference play. The Bobcats began their season with a win over Eudora before traveling to Missouri for a tournament they would win at Liberty North. The Bobcats would fall in their first game of the season

against Shawnee Mission West before taking a few weeks off for winter break. The team returned to the court in January at Lansing in their first game in the new United Kansas Conference. The Bobcats rolled their next three games before hosting their home tournament. The Bobcats took care of Barstow before falling to eventual 4A champion Piper in the semifinal. Head coach Mike McBride said before the state tournament that he puts the stats in five-game blocks. After the Piper loss, the Bobcats were 8-2 and McBride said the stats were not good. “Our stats were not good after 10 games,” McBride said. “And we were

8-2. I was wondering how we even had that record.” The Bobcats won the third-place game the next day and began a streak. The Bobcats would end the regular season with multiple double-digit wins and winning the conference. After rolling past their sub-state opponents, the Bobcats clinched the No. 3 seed for state. In the state tournament, BLHS would get past Salina Central 60-46 to advance to the semifinal. The semifinal opponent was Bishop Carroll. Bishop Carroll grabbed control of the game early and did not let go for much of the first three quarters. Despite a few moments here and there, the Bobcats did

not have the momentum and found themselves down 52-39 at the end of the third. But the Bobcats started to chip away. Connor Younger would drain a 3-pointer with 1:24 remaining to cut the lead to 63-61. A jump ball call gave possession to the Bobcats and Basehor-Linwood would tie the game with 11 seconds remaining. A foul on Jacob Coleman gave the Bobcats the lead with only seconds left. The Bobcats held on and won 69-68 after trailing by as many as 16 points. Before the state tournament, McBride said he did not know yet where this year’s team ranked in all the teams he has coached, but he said this Bobcat team was one of the best shooting teams he’s had. The shooting helped advance the team into the state title game. Like the Bishop Carroll game, the Bobcats came out cold shooting the ball, including shooting only 16.7 percent in the first half. While the Bobcats took the lead a handful of times in the second half, Andover Central began to pull away in the fourth as shots continued to not go the Bobcats way and they fell to end their season and send off the five seniors of Coleman, Nolan Ford, Dylan Mussett, Kobe Sifford and Jace Friesen.
