Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions. • Know the risks of UV exposure. Sunlight is needed to engage vitamin D production in the body, but too much sun exposure can do more harm than good. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from the sun and other sources, such as tanning beds, are the primary cause of skin cancer. Exposure also can lead to sunburns, premature aging/wrinkling and eye damage. • Use only broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen. Look for a sunblock product that boasts an SPF of at least 30. The FDA requires any sunscreen with an SPF below 15 to carry a warning that it only protects against sunburn, not skin cancer or skin aging. Find a sunscreen that works against UVA and UVB rays as well. UVA rays are mostly responsible for contributing to skin cancer and premature aging. Reapply frequently, especially when swimming or engaging in activities that cause sweating. • Know the difference between water-resistant and waterproof sunscreens. Manufacturers are no longer allowed to claim that their sunscreens are waterproof or sweatproof. A sunscreen may be able to repel water for a short time, but it should be reapplied when leaving the water or when spending long stretches in the water. • Cover up whenever possible. It may seem counterintuitive in hot weather, but covering up can be beneficial to the skin and actually keep a person cooler. Wear wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeve tops and light-colored pants. Some materials are made with reflective properties, while others actually boast their own SPF. Summer fun does not need to be threatened by overexposure to the sun. By exercising caution, everyone can spend quality time in the great outdoors all summer long.

Popular winery is the venue for many events
By BETH KORNEGAY Special to the Times
No matter the time of year, something fun is always happening at Basehor’s Holy-Field Winery. The 17-acre vineyard planted its first native American and French hybrid vines in 1986 and now contains more than 12,000 vines growing 10 different varieties of grapes. Nearly 10,000 gallons of award-winning wine is produced each year. Holy-Field’s wine is known as an “estate product,” meaning the product is grown, aged and bottled on the grounds of the vineyard. “We love being part of the Basehor community and enjoy planning special events for our friends and customers,” said Michelle Meyer, who coowns Holy-Field with her dad, Les. “We opened our doors in 1994 and have been having a great time here at Holy-Field ever since.” Nearly every weekend, some sort of special event is planned at Holy-Field. In addition to the vineyard being a popular venue for weddings, the banquet room often hosts bridal and wedding showers, family reunions and business meetings. The banquet room also plays host to murder mysteries and dueling piano performances throughout the year.

Free wine samples are available during normal operating hours in the tasting room. No doubt one of Holy-Field’s “wine dogs” will greet you as you browse in the well-stocked gift shop. As the weather warms up each May, the summertime music series kicks off with the vineyard as a backdrop. Each Friday through early August, a different band performs and food trucks are on hand to offer a variety of food. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating and enjoy a bottle of Holy-Field wine during the evening performance. Perhaps the most anticipated event each year is the annual Ladies Night to benefit Safe Harbor Prison Dogs. Local vendors sell their local wares to eager attendees during the event which is a fundraising event to support Safe Harbor’s works with Lansing Correctional Facility. Prisoners are used to socialize and train dogs prior to them being available for adoption. Tickets for this popular yearly event are limited and always sell out within days. As the grapes mature each fall, Holy-Field puts the call out to community groups and volunteers to help with bringing in harvest. For several Sundays, volunteers cut and collect grapes in buckets so the
fruit can be pressed in the vineyard’s cellar. After harvesting is complete for the day, volunteers are treated to a farm lunch, a commemorative T-shirt and samples of the freshly squeezed grape juice. Each December, a holiday shopping event is held with community members encouraged to donate homemade cookies. Those cookies are sold by the generous pound to attendees with the proceeds being donated to the University of Kansas Cancer Center in memory of Meyer’s mother, the original tasting room hostess. Of course, the real star of Holy-Field is the wine. With nine prestigious Jefferson Cup wins along with a multitude of other awards, Holy-Field wine has received more top awards than any other vineyard in the metropolitan area. Holy-Field is located at 18807 158th St. in Basehor and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. Beth Kornegay is a freelance writer covering news and events in the city of Basehor. Residents opt for downtown loft living By MARK ROUNTREE mrountree@leavenworthtimes.com
Hundreds of loft apartments are located in downtown Leavenworth.

Edith Jones said that she has always lived in a house. But about one year ago, she and her husband transitioned to downtown loft living. They purchased a loft on Delaware Street in Leavenworth. “We love the convenience,” Jones said. “It’s fun and there is a touch of whimsy.” Jones is among a growing trend of local residents who have chosen to live in downtown loft residences. Lofts apartments are traditionally described as living spaces above an existing business. Loft apartments also have become trendy with the renovation of old buildings. Lofts often have exposed brick, high ceilings, large windows, wood beams and original features. Some of the downtown lofts in Leavenworth also feature outside patios and porches. Jones’ residence on Delaware overlooks the downtown district. “It’s a great place to watch the parades,” she said. “It’s unique. It’s nice to be able to walk to stores and restaurants here in downtown.” Michelle Waldman, property manager at the
Lofts traditionally feature large windows.
Stove Factory Lofts, said lofts “are a perfect balance of modern interior and historical features.” Wendy Scheidt, executive director of Leavenworth Main Street, said there are approximately hundreds loft apartments located in the downtown district. “Lofts are fun. We have a lot of great living spaces in the residential lofts,” she said. Many of the lofts are renovated to suit the tenant’s style and taste. One example of that is Jones’ loft on Delaware, which features a builtin reading nook and a sliding wooden door to a bathroom. “It has a lot of character,” said Jones. Jeremy Greenamyre owns several loft living spaces in the downtown area, including the Freight House Lofts on 7th Street. “Lofts are unique in that you can walk to services and restaurants,” said Jeremy Greenamyre, owner of Greenamyre Rentals, Inc. “It’s unique.” Scheidt said the convenience of loft living is a big selling factor. “Lofts here downtown are in the middle of everything,” she said. “It provides a mixed-use environment for business, services, living and entertainment.”

Guide to end of summer sales
The end of summer is marked by mixed feelings. Come the end of summer, vacations may be coming to an end as children ready themselves for a new school year. But shoppers know the end of summer is an ideal time to find great deals on an array of items. Although back-to-school sales flood the marketplace this time of year, plenty of other sales take place in the final weeks of summer — and consumers can save substantial amounts of money if they know where to look.
Outdoor furniture
As stores clear out their seasonal items, shoppers can score big deals on patio sets and other outdoor furniture. Retailers need to make room for snowblowers, rakes, shovels, and holiday merchandise, so shoppers are bound to find discounted tables, chairs, fire pits, umbrellas, and chaise lounges. Individuals can use this opportunity to update worn-out patio furniture and other seasonal items they can store over the winter.
Camping/hiking equipment
Only the most devoted campers camp out when the temperatures begin to dip, so consumers can use this opportunity to grab camping equipment before it’s gone for another season. Tents, flashlights, cooking gear, backpacks, outdoor recreational items, such as kayaks or fishing tackle, water bladders, and heaters may be available at steep discounts.
Grills
Backyard barbecues are a staple of summer. If your barbecue or outdoor cooking equipment experienced heavy use throughout the summer, now is a great time to shop sales on grills and outdoor cooking gear.

Dining out with children Dining out at restaurants can be an enjoyable activity and a break from kitchen duties at home. Many people in both the United States and Canada dine out at least once a week. According to a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, 58 percent of American adults say they visit a restaurant during the week. The Canadian Restaurant Food Association has found around 23 percent of Canadians dine out once a week. Even busy families want to indulge. However, parents of young children may avoid restaurants because of apprehension about the experience. Getting ready for the restaurant excursion can help families avoid some of the common pitfalls. Patience and planning can help dining out with the family go smoothly.
Infants
New parents often need a respite from the nearconstant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s
feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.
Toddlers and school age
Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those
restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. A restaurant that has interesting decor, such as an aquarium, can keep toddlers occupied. But bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.
Older children
Part of the challenge of dining out with older children is holding their attention, but meals can facilitate family conversation and be good for the parent-child dynamic. Set a device-free rule at the table and use the opportunity to converse. Try exotic cuisine or new dining experiences so it is an adventure for all involved. Dining out with children requires different strategies depending on youngsters’ ages.
