Bridal show slated in downtown Leavenworth By LISA SWEET

Special to the Times Love is in the air. Literally. According to a 2018 weddingwire.com report and a 2019 statista.com study, 34% of all marriage proposals occur between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, with 19% happening in December. Christmas Eve is the most popular day to get engaged. Ten percent of engagements occur on Valentine’s Day. So it comes as no surprise that this is the perfect time of year for a bridal show. It has been 10 years since Leavenworth has hosted a bridal event, and with the help of downtown businesses, the Heritage Center is putting on the Leavenworth Bridal Show 2020 from 1-5 p.m. Feb. 23. According to Denise Souza, director of sales for Home2 Suites by Hilton, a leading sponsor of the event, the bridal show is for “future brides, families and friends to meet local professionals involved in the wedding and party planning business.” “It will be one-stop shopping to meet with experts, get registered at (certain stores), see wedding gowns, visit with travel agents, event planners and hair salons.” Brides will have the opportunity to visit all the vendors, enter giveaways and make connections with wedding specialists to help coordinate the most romantic day of their dreams. It is a great jumping off point for all to learn the countless details that go into

one of the most important days of a person’s life. In addition to all the local area businesses, the Heritage Center is an ideal location for the bridal show. According to Salli Shirey, event coordinator at the Heritage Center, staff has hosted to many graduations, military balls, fundraisers and, of course, weddings each year. “The Heritage Center has accessibility to Leavenworth, Fort Leavenworth and surrounding areas, ample parking. Every room is handicap accessible, the facility has been recently remodeled, it has the ability to accommodate 350-plus guests and we have the ideal place for both indoor and outdoor pictures and the park and riverfront are also close,” she said. Besides meeting vendors and shopping, brides will have the opportunity to watch a live bridal fashion show, listen to DJ music, take pictures in photo booths and have the opportunity to win prizes from the vendors as well as two grand prize drawings. The first is the opportunity to win an overnight stay in the Home2 Suites’ honeymoon suite in downtown Leavenworth. The other opportunity is a chance to win a two-night getaway to St. Louis. Future brides will receive extra chances to enter. So is you need a little help planning your big day, the Leavenworth Bridal Show 2020 is an event not to be missed.

Family tradition continues in Leavenworth By LISA SWEET

Special to the Times “Reilly & Sons started in 1925 as a two-man father-son enterprise,” according to the company’s website. “Today, it is the largest Real Estate and Insurance brokerage in Northeast Kansas. The founders were Edward F. Reilly, Sr., a former Mayor of the City of Leavenworth, and his father Humphrey, who served as County Treasurer for 25 years.” Now in 2020, Reilly Real Estate has fourth- and fifth-generation family at the helm, continuing the family’s commitment and dedication to helping Leavenworth County grow in size and relevance. “My outlook from a community perspective is, if you’re community is not growing, quite honestly, your community is dying,” said Mike Reilly, president of Reilly Real Estate and a fourth-generation Reilly. “When (you) look at what (Reilly Real Estate does), it is purely a function of our entire marketplace which is Leavenworth County and becoming a bigger part of the metropolitan area. For years the metropolitan area has grown in different directions. Whether it was the northeast or the east side or south, like Overland Park or Miami County line, the last leg of that growth around the metro was the west side, the K-7 corridor side. … In the past three to four years it has really started to happen along the K-7 corridor, to the extent that now the northwest corridor, which is Leavenworth County, is really starting to get noticed.” This movement to the area means there is a need for more housing. According to Reilly, Basehor is the perfect location and the location of their newest housing development Grayhawk at Prairie Gardens. Reilly stated that the location of this newest development makes sense due to a number of reasons. He noted the proximity to Lawrence, Topeka or Kansas City, all within a 25-minute drive. Addition-

ally, home owners will be 20 minutes from Corporate Woods and the airport is 15 minutes away. “From a central location standpoint and access to highways, south Leavenworth County is really positioned well,” Reilly said. “People are looking for that next up and coming small community that is affordable, that has good schools, that still has a small-town feel, and that is Basehor in Kansas and Lansing and Leavenworth as well.” Close to the development is a library, kindergarten and elementary school. In addition to the proximity to established amenities, Grayhawk is one of their largest developments to date and due to its size, Reilly Real Estate is opening up to additional builders. “Greyhawk is a large development, it (will have) over 400 doors when it is completed, 300 single-family and 100 attached homes, what I call villas. We thought opening it up to other builders would allow for a little bit more diversity of product,” said Reilly. Greyhawk will also feature a home owners association, a pool, clubhouse, playground and a park setting where the neighborhood can congregate and socialize. To help with more growth, there is a 12-acre commercial development called 158 Plaza that is located right outside the gate on State Avenue and 158th Street. “We are hoping with more housing that we are generating, there is more demand for more commercial, whether that is restaurant related, service related or perhaps grocery related,” said Reilly. Leavenworth County has continued to grow for many years, and big commercial businesses like restaurants, stores and service organizations come when a community can support those businesses with its population. “This is our opportunity for our community to grow and housing is the first step,” said Reilly. “In

order for a community to get commercial amenities or shopping and restaurants, you need people. You need housing. So housing is the starter, it’s the generator for all things that are commercial real estate-based.” In addition to helping the community grow with housing – 92% of their business is resale and 8% is new builds – Reilly Real Estate, which includes real estate, building, marketing, brokerage and insurance, has helped the community grow in other directions. They have been at the ground level in numerous brokerage deals that have enticed major businesses like Dillons, Walmart and Price Chopper to set up shop in Leavenworth County. Reilly cites the fact that his grandfather helped build the 16th Walmart in the United States that was located on Spruce and 20th streets, and they had a hand in Gary Carlson Business Park. “Our family donated the (land) that is the Gary Carlson Business Park,” he said. “So when you look back at the fact that Leavenworth has an industrial park or a business park right now it was centered around the fact that we gave them ground to take that opportunity and run with it. In that park there are over 800 jobs and probably 10-12 businesses. It is a nice development for our county.” Reilly and Sons also has some highly anticipated community outreach for which they are known, from their annual Halloween Parade to handing out thousands of flags on Flag Day. For the past 95 years, the Reilly family has been devoted to Leavenworth County and with fifth-generation Jack joining the ranks, the tradition continues. Grayhawk and Prairie Gardens began construction on the first phase of homes in July 2019 and lots/homes are currently for sale. If you’re interested in learning more about Grayhawk, visit www.reillyhomebuilders.com or visit them at 602 Delaware St. in Leavenworth.

Different flowers different mea By LISA SWEET

Special to the Times

Imagine a knock on the door and waiting for you is a delivery of a bouquet of flowers and you immediately undersand what they meant. Nowadays, flowers are sent as a way of saying “I love you,” “Get well soon” or “Thank you,” but during the Victorian era, the meaning of flowers were vast. In fact, the meanings haven’t gone away, it’s just that floriography, or the language of flowers, is not something that is commonly practiced. Bouquets were sent as a way to wish a long life or various types of flowers carried in a young bride’s bouquet represented fertility, beauty and purity. While still others could be sent as a warning to an enemy or a way to rebuff an unwanted suitor. So while flowers’ meanings may be forgotten in modern times and it is perfectly normal for all kinds of flowers to be placed in an arrangement, it could be quite romantic

8 Leavenworth County Living

to know the meanings of your flowers, especially this Valentine’s Day. If you’re not sure you want to commit to red roses this Valentine’s Day because they symbolize love and romance (and maybe too much commitment), Samantha Carpenter, floor manager at Leavenworth Floral and Gifts, 701 Delaware St., has some other suggestions. “My favorite choice is the Designer’s Choice Valentine’s Day mix. It is an assortment of various flowers along with roses,” she said. What a great way to provide roses as well as a more robust bouquet to show the recipient just how much you care. Carpenter also mentioned that other pop-

s have eanings ular choices include daisies, representing innocence and purity, and Gerber daisies, which tell the person receiving them that they are beautiful. If you are interested in full bouquets that tell a story, then perhaps send tulip – my personal favorite – because they represent true love. Why not send daffodils to your best friend? They represent friendship. And if you’re in the doghouse this Valentine’s day, send a bunch of hyacinths as they represent forgiveness. While we may not remember all the meanings of flowers, most people know that different colored roses mean different things. So if

you’re not ready for a full commitment yet, yellow roses are probably the most benign rose to send as it represents friendship. However, if you truly desire something more serious, send pink roses. Perhaps you met someone a few days before Valentine’s Day and it was love at first sight. Send purple roses. Or if you have been in a long-term relationship and want to pop the question, red and white roses in a bouquet together represent unity. These are just some suggestions, but Carpenter confirmed that red roses are still the most popular flower sent on the most romantic holiday of the season. So head over to Leavenworth Floral and Gifts. They have the traditional dozen red roses, half dozen and a three-rose vase arrangement. In addition to flowers you can purchase candy, stuffed animals, balloons and Valentine’s Day gifts. They deliver to Leavenworth and surrounding areas to include Lansing, Easton, Platte

City and Weston for a $30 minimum order plus delivery fee. You can call your order in or visit them in person for any extra help you may want. You can reach any of their floral experts at 913-682-2022 or visit www.leavenworthfloral.net Remember, don’t stress about what to send, as any arrangement received on Valentine’s Day will be greatly appreciated and understood as an overture of love.

Indulge your craving for Mexican food I love Mexican food and have had a serious craving going for weeks. Between traveling for the holidays and more, I just haven’t had the opportunity to get my salsa and chips on in awhile – until last week. I have my favorite spots. I haven’t been to La Carreta Mexican Restaurant & Cantina, 21 Express Lane in Lansing, in awhile. I decided another day-date with the hubby was in order and we made a beeline straight for their doors. After a day of running errands I needed to indulge my craving and to take the opportunity to slow down while having a nice warm meal made by someone other than me. It was sleeting sideways when we made our way in and I thought for sure, with all the doomsday weather reports, that we may be in for a bit of a depressing atmosphere. How wrong I was. We walked into the restaurant, which was teeming with people, and were immediately seated. The restaurant was crowded with families, couples and work groups. We sat down and began checking over their lunch menu. It is a truncated version of their regular dinner menu and had some items on it that featured Mexi-

can preparations of eggs if you were more in a “brunchy” kind of mood. I wanted lunch – and a big one. Within minutes our waiter was there for a drink LISA SWEET order and to give FOOD FREAK us our chips and salsa. We decided we were pretty hungry and knew what we wanted, so instead of just drinks, we ordered our entire meal. I decided to check out their chicken fajitas and a pastor taco. My husband ordered a barbacoa burrito. The requisite chips were not ordinary, they are thin, crispy and served warm. The salsa was just how I like it, smooth with a hint of lime. I love La Carreta’s salsa. It is one of my favorites. As we were gobbling our chips the waiter came with our drinks and said, “I’ll be right back with your meal.” I thought he was exaggerating, but within seconds he was back at the table with all of our food. I was shocked at how quick the kitchen got our meal out. But

rest assured, I didn’t feel rushed. Lunch time is an opportunity to get a quick bite, so expeditious food service is paramount. Now to the food. My fajitas came sizzling and perfectly cooked. The vegetables were the standard peppers and onions and they were delicious. The chicken came in easy-to-eat strips that were incredibly juicy. I’ve been to other restaurants where they chop up the meat so much that it dries out but La Carreta doesn’t have that problem. It came with a side of guacamole, rice, refried beans, lettuce and pico de gallo. I asked for corn tortillas and I received five tortillas and they were warm and delicious. La Carreta is my new go-to for fajitas. My taco pastor was something I have never tried but I was intrigued by the description, “Grilled pork cooked with fresh pineapple in guajillo sauce topped with cilantro, onions and avocados.” It seemed right up my alley. I ordered one, but they doubled up on my tortilla, presumably because I asked for a corn tortilla and they are much smaller than flour ones or because maybe one order comes with two. I decided to separate my tortillas and made two smaller tacos so the hubby could try it too. The pork was in chunks and extremely tender and juicy while the guajillo sauce added a pleasant flavor and smoky heat. The addition of the pineapple provided a complimentary sweetness that I really enjoyed. All the toppings rounded out the textures and flavors and the salsa verde they served alongside provided a fresh low-key spice that made this, probably, one of my new taco preferences. La Carreta is my new taco pastor addiction. My husband truly enjoyed his barbacoa burrito. It came on a plate with rice and

beans and the burrito was stuffed to the brim with deliciously flavored and succulent beef, Monterey jack cheese and avocado along with a red sauce. He ordered his topped with the cheesy spinach sauce which he loved. He said it made it very comforting to eat on that chilly, messy day. When I asked to expound on his positive opinion of his lunch, he said, “It’s really, really good.” To be fair, I asked him for his opinion while he was in mid-chew. Afterwards, he let me know that it was spiced really well, not at all salty, very fresh, and the portion was perfect. La Carreta is the place for my husband’s barbacoa inclination. The food was the perfect portion for lunch and the entire time we were there the waiter checked on us and never once made us feel that we had to leave. And we really didn’t want to leave because it was cold and rainy and we had a lot of work to do. But we can’t all hunker down for hours in a Mexican restaurant to escape the realities of life while subsisting on salsa and chips (and queso). So when we asked for the check, it came without delay and the process was quite efficient. I’m not sure what has taken me so long to get back to La Carreta. It is definitely back on my regular Mexican restaurant rotation. If you get a hankering for Mexican food give them a try. According to their website, they are open seven days a week, Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. And in case you’re wondering, La Carreta means the road, and they are certainly the road to excellent food in Leavenworth County. Lisa Sweet writes about food for the Leavenworth Times.

February is American Heart Month By LISA SWEET

Special to the Times February is when we celebrate love and hearts, in particular our own heart with American Heart Month. This year, like others, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute teams up The Heart Truth “to celebrate American Heart Month by motivating Americans to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent heart disease.” Heart health is paramount to living a long and healthy life. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death and disability in the United States with one million people dying from it each year. That’s more than cancer. The Mayo Clinic describes heart disease as “a range of conditions that affect your heart. Diseases under the heart disease umbrella include blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias) and heart defects you are born with (congenital heart defects), among others. The term ‘heart disease’ is often used interchangeably with the term ‘cardiovascular disease.’ Cardiovascular disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke.” The American Heart Association provides guidelines for keeping your heart healthy called Life’s Simple 7 – get active, control cholesterol, eat better, lose weight, don’t smoke, reduce blood sugar and manage blood pressure.

All of these seem easy to do. You can park further away from a location to get more exercise. Don’t pick up a cigarette. Eat more whole foods. But what does manage your blood pressure mean and why is it so important? Saint John Hospital’s website has various tips and information about keeping your heart healthy. One handout talks about keeping track of your blood pressure. “Having high blood pressure can lead to heart disease and other health problems,” it says. You can keep track by writing down your blood pressure numbers every time you visit the doctor, taking your blood pressure at home or stopping by a pharmacy and using one of the free blood pressure cuffs. If you’re concerned that your numbers are not ideal, talk to your doctor about ways to help. Another recent press release discusses flu season and how it can also cause complications to those with preexisting heart disease. “Flu can make a cholesterol filled plaque vulnerable to rupture, form a blood clot and cause heart attacks and sudden death,” according to Saint John cardiologist Venkat Pasnoori. Studies show that having the flu makes your heart work harder as it is trying to fight the infection. Having any kind of viral infection, such as the flu, makes the heart work harder. This could explain why the incidence of heart attacks rises during flu season. Key signs to be aware of are chest discomfort that

lasts for more than a few minutes or goes away and then comes back. Pain or discomfort can also happen in one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach. Other signs are shortness of breath, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Having a top-notch hospital is great news for those who live in Leavenworth County, especially someone who has cardiac issues. Saint John Hospital is a five-star recipient for the treatment of heart failure and treatment of sepsis, according to a national report released by Healthgrades.com, and is committed to helping people to have a healthy heart. They offer cardiopulmonary services and offer patients help with prevention, treatment, management and rehabilitation for heart and lung disorders. They also provide non-invasive cardiac services that are designed to gather data to help develop an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan by utilizing nuclear medicine and cardiac ultrasound. Saint John Hospital also specializes in 24/7 emergency care, senior behavioral health, skilled nursing, ambulatory care, including outpatient surgical services, imaging services including 3D mammography, CT scan, diagnostic imaging and ultrasound, rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech/ language therapy and audiology. The hospital is a part of Prime Healthcare Services and affiliated with Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. To learn more, visit www.saintjohnleavenworth.com
