The origins of Baby New Year Excitement for a new year abounds on January 1. Baby New Year is one of the more recognizable symbols of the New Year’s holiday, particularly in print advertisements and television commercials. Perhaps you’ve wondered what role Baby New Year plays in the celebration? While he may seem like a relatively modern icon, this cultural mainstay has a lengthy history. One theory suggests Baby New Year was celebrated as far back as 600 B.C. in ancient Greece, when a child was paraded around in a basket upon the arrival of the new year. The baby represented rebirth, and Greeks believed their god of wine, Dionysus, was reborn on New Year’s as the spirit of fertility. Other historians say that the custom even predates the Greeks to the ancient Egyptians. Even though the baby new year custom was originally frowned upon by Christians and deemed a pagan tradition, eventually Christians embraced the symbol as well, albeit in a different way. The end of the year is marked by the birth of the Christ child, and this became a special way to interpret Baby New Year. In modern times, Baby New Year has lost any connection to a deity or religious figure. Rather, he is now interpreted as a child who arrives at the start of the year and eventually ages into Father Time. The baby is depicted as an infant or toddler wearing a diaper and a sash with the year he is representing (and often a top hat). He is some-

times depicted holding or associated with an hourglass, a noisemaker or other item either pertaining to time or New Year’s Day festivities. Father Time is often portrayed as an elderly man with a long, gray beard. The Baby New Year/Father Time message boils down to “out with the old and in with the new.” People bid goodbye to Father Time and welcome this cherubic child who will carry them through the next 12 months and grow with them. The Baby New Year idea eventually developed into a “First Born” tradition as well. Many towns, cities and hospitals have instituted contests award-

ing the first baby born in the new year the title of “Baby New Year.” Such children are often the subjects of local news coverage and get their picture in the newspaper. Gifts, such as complimentary diapers, a case of formula or baby food or other baby supplies may be offered. In addition, private companies may offer their own gifts and recognition to the lucky child and his or her family in turn for complementary publicity. Baby New Year is a symbol of the fresh start the new year brings. His relevance in celebrations has endured for centuries.

Notable moments in the career of Martin Luther King, Jr. Each January, Americans honor the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929, King would grow up to become one of the most influential people of the 21st century. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in January each year. Taking time to learn about some of the many notable moments in King’s career is a great way to honor his legacy.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference

The Montgomery Bus Boycott made King a national figure, and he capitalized on that recognition to help establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The SCLC was a group of civil rights activists devoted to nonviolent protest. As SCLC president, a role he held until his death, King traveled the globe promoting nonviolent protest and civil rights.

Morehouse College

After attending segregated public schools as a child, King was accepted into Morehouse College at the age of 15. Morehouse College was the alma mater of both King’s father, a pastor, and his maternal grandfather. While King studied medicine and law at Morehouse, perhaps the first major moment of his career in the ministry occurred while he was a college student. It was at Morehouse where King was mentored by the highly regarded theologian and racial equality advocate Dr. Benjamin Mays. Before his final year at Morehouse, King, now 18, chose to enter the ministry.

Those tensions escalated further nine months later, when 42-year-old Rosa Parks rejected a bus driver’s plea that she give up her bus seat to a white passenger in a section designated for black people. As a result of these incidents, King organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted for more

King played an integral role in the organization and execution of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963. Estimates suggest as many as 300,000 people attended the march, which is considered a watershed moment for the civil rights movement that shone a light on the injustices faced by African Americans across the country. The march culminated with King delivering his most famous address, which is often referred to as his “‘I Have a Dream’ speech.” King delivered the speech while standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and shared his view of a future for the United States in which all people would have equal rights and opportunities. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a remarkable human being. Celebrations of his life can involve revisiting some of his more notable moments.

Ladies Night Out slated at Heritage Center By LISA SWEET Special to the Times

It’s January and we’ve officially entered the doldrums of winter and the coldest time of the year. So instead of getting cabin fever or lamenting the weather, I prefer to get outside of my comfort zone and have a girls night out. I love getting a crowd of my girlfriends together and will look for any excuse to get a fun break from mommying, working and adulting to include wintering. And while we all love the men in our lives, there is nothing that gels a friendship more than a non-stop laughing, eating, shopping and a hanging out kind of night. So now I present to you the easiest and no-planning event this January. The Saint John Hospital and Leavenworth Times have done all the planning for you and all you have to do is get your estrogenrich crew together and figure out who is driving (or get a ride share) and head out to a 21-older night out, thanks to the event sponsors Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth Times, Mutual Savings Associa-

tion, Zeck Ford and the Heritage Center. Sure we can go to book club, bunco night or have a few drinks on our porch, but why not get out of your yoga pants, put on the new sweater you got for Christmas and dare I say it, a pair of heels, and go to Ladies Night Out 2020. LNO brings all your favorites together – fun, drinks, food, games, shopping – into one place, and for just $15 you get to party with your sisters and help raise money for the Alliance Against Family Violence and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). You can raise money for great causes, get in some post-holiday shopping with some great vendors, bid on great items in the large silent auction, have a few drinks and play music bingo. I’m totally getting a group of my gal pals together from 4-8 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Heritage Center, 109 Delaware St. I’m going to hang out and have fun. Come on out and join me. Come with a friend or two or three, or come on your own and meet some vivacious local women and make some new friends. Advanced tickets are $15 and go on sale Jan. 10 at the Leavenworth Times, Kansas Country Store, CASA and the Heritage Center or you can purchase

them at the door the night of the event for $20. This year there will be a huge silent auction with all proceeds going to the featured charities, a cash bar, free food samples from Tampico Mexican Restaurant, The Depot, Jimmy Johns, Ten Penny, Roselyn’s 1st City Bakery & Cafe and KCKCC Culinary School as well as shopping, chatting and visiting with friends, There will be door prizes and more. In fact, there a few really big prizes that will be drawn that night. I’ll just say this – Kenny Chesney. You can enter to win two tickets to his concert July 11 at Arrowhead Stadium. Tickets for a chance to win are $20 each and can be purchased at the Leavenworth Times or Armed Forces Bank. Another great prize is a Rejuvenation Spa package or get pampered with a massage and facial provided by Bella Vita Salon & Spa. The grand prize is a two-night stay at Chateau at the Lake in Branson, Missouri, plus show tickets provided by ExploreBranson.com, a vacation value of more than $1,000. I’d try different combinations, adding mousse to them, different chocolates or flavors, even some with alcohol. The hobby turned into requests by family and friends. My wife (Roselyn) and my kids started pushing the bakery idea. On Sept. 5 2019, I was let go from the job I moved my family out to

RESTAURANT REVIEW: TEN PENNY

Downtown restaurant hits a home run By LISA SWEET Special to the Times

Recently we had a major family event. So what do you do when it was just after Thanksgiving and you’re totally over cooking and cleaning? You put the food and dirty dishes in the hands of the professionals. I immediately thought of Ten Penny Restaurant & Bar in downtown Leavenworth for a fun group dinner the day before our event. I have had many delicious meals there before and knew they could handle my party of 12. I made a reservation about three weeks in advance and the day before was given a courtesy call to confirm. For a casual eatery, I was pleasantly surprised at this courtesy that my party was given. The night of our reservation we ended up having a last-minute guest. The folks at Ten Penny didn’t even bat an eye. Without missing a beat, they pulled up an extra table, chair and accommodated my group, even though there was another group just as large in the same party room. We were greeted, handed our menus and water was brought out as we settled in. Drink orders were taken and our waiter wrote everything down and every mixed drink, soda and beer was handed out to the correct person with barely a wait. A party our size meant lots of noise, people not paying attention, kids falling asleep on the table and various uncles strolling around the room, and despite all the potential pitfalls given to our waiter, the appetizers came out with extra plates, another round of drinks came and the food was warm and tasty. For appetizers we ordered chips and guacamole, potstickers and calamari. Everything was crispy, fresh, hot and highly

flavorful. The calamari was not what I was expecting. I usually get rings and legs breaded. Instead they were something like calamari fries. They were gobbled up in a hot minute and discussion abounded about potentially ordering more. We didn’t because we still had entrees to get to. After the appetizers three people in our group received salads that came with their meals. I was happy to see that the salads were fresh, laden with vegetables, and most importantly, came after the appetizers were done and before the entrees. It is rare these days, especially in casual eateries, that waitstaff honor actual courses. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in restaurants where plates are shoved on the table alongside your appetizer or salad. It usually feels like a balancing act, so kudos to Ten Penny for getting it right. Their kitchen was definitely having a great night expediting. Then the real test came – 12 different orders. The majority of our group ordered the fish and chips. I made sure to get everyone’s opinion and they all made comments about the big portion size.

No one was able to finish the two huge pieces of breaded cod and french fries. The ratio of batter to fish was fantastic. Nothing is worse than eating batter and looking for your cod. The fish and chips were ideally crispy with not one iota of grease. If we’re talking crispy and not greasy, all the kids ordered the chicken strips, and they all managed to eat one or two and a bunch of fries. On the flip side of fish and chips and chicken strips, a diner in our group ordered grilled chicken with steamed veggies and a side salad. She let us know that the chicken was juicy and flavorful and that it didn’t seem like she was eating a “diet” dish. My husband ordered the Philly steak french dip proclaiming “two of my

favorite things in one sandwich, how could I go wrong?” and it was great. He really did get the best of both worlds. He got a plethora of juicy, thinly sliced beef covered in melted provolone on a toasted roll, and a good deal of au jus to dip his sandwich. It made our “order again” list for Ten Penny. If we’re talking items that make the “order again” list, then may I recommend their burgers? Three folks

ordered burgers, certainly an opportunity for a kitchen to screw up. When you have three different meats cooked to order, you’re just asking for a raw burger or a hockey puck. Well these were cooked to perfection. All the burgers were cooked to order perfectly and everyone finished their burgers with nary a french fry left. I would have loved to try the guaco burger or my friend’s order of the jalapeno bacon and pepperjack burger, or my uncle’s cheeseburger, but alas, the three of them barely came up for air. Last but not least, I ordered the grilled center cut pork chops with green beans and I substituted the potatoes au gratin with a baked potato. When my plate arrived I was a little nervous because the chops were a little thinner than I anticipated. So I was assuming they would be dry and inedible. Wow, was I proven wrong. I was flabbergasted at how succulent and delicious these were. Overall, I usually expect some holes to show when you dine with a big crowd that is making meal substitutions. At the very least meals going to the wrong people, or drinks not being refilled. Well Ten Penny was not interested in being a cliche. Instead they rose to the challenge and in my opinion treated us the way you expect to be treated in a restaurant. We never had to ask for refills, our meals made their way to the right people, the food came out in perfect synchronicity as proper courses and our waiter was highly attentive. We will definitely be repeat customers and highly suggest you go there when you have a gettogether. The only negative thing to report is that because the portions are so hearty we were too full for dessert. Next time.

It’s time for a ’Souper’ Bowl party By LISA SWEET Special to the Times

It’s January and enough time should have passed after all the big food holidays that we’re ready for another party with a lot of food. Yep, it’s time for the big game. Whether your team is in the Super Bowl or not, getting a crowd together in your house to watch the game, critique the commercials or complain about the halftime show, it’s always a blast. And, of course, we all have to eat. While I love hosting events, when you have people at your house you can sometimes forget the time and expense that goes into a shindig, even if it is for a few extra people. You want to make sure your home is clean and tidy, and if you’re anything like me, that means procrastinating and cleaning a day or two before people arrive. You need plates and forks, drinks and all the ingredients to make all the yummy food. That is a lot of mental and physical prep, driving to the grocery store, shopping and cooking (and inevitably you forget something and have to go back). So despite all the extra work, I have a great couch that fits a lot of people and love making experimental appetizers. But to alleviate some stress, football watch parties are always some sort of potluck in my house. We’ve had a lot of

successful family-friendly football parties, from desserts-only and chili cook-offs to “make your favorite chip and dip.” But our most successful event was our “Souper Bowl” party. Everyone brought a soup. I plugged in a ton of slow cookers and while I still had salsa, guacamole and chips and plenty of brownies in the shape of footballs, soup was the star of the show. We had everything from baked potato soup and lasagna soup and tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons to chicken noodle soup. Of course we made it into a competition with first-, second- and third-place finishers. There were no losers just plenty of delicious soups to eat. And while I love a good party, I love a good pun more. So if you want to host your own soup event, you can make Chiefs beef pho, Travis “Kale”sey and sausage soup or KC Wolf “it down” barley soup. Or you can make my personal favorite below:

In addition to the food competition, we like playing left-right-center during halftime with either dollar bills or with pennies for a prize. Board games before kickoff are always fun and, weather dependent, some football in the backyard. Football bingo is fun. The first player to fill their card wins a prize. Boxes have words like down, fumble and more. Have fun this year and I hope your team wins. But I really hope mine does.

Ma“ham”es and bean soup

1 large onion diced, 3 celery ribs chopped, 2 garlic cloves minced and all sauteed in some olive oil. Add 1 large potato peeled and chopped, 2 cans white beans, undrained, leftover ham cut up into chunks, 6 cups chicken broth or water, salt and pepper to taste. Simmer 20-30 minutes until potato becomes soft. Use a masher and squish up some of the potatoes and beans, add some parsley and more salt and pepper to taste.
