Nostalgic arcade opens downtown Samantha Dickinson is the principal owner of The Retro-Cade Arcade. The other owners are Mike Tinsley and Lyle Richards. Jay Barwick is the general manager. In this Q&A, Barwick talks about the new business at 322 Delaware St. in downtown Leavenworth. The business opened May 17.

What is a brief history of your business? I had an arcade in Platte City, Missouri, for four years and decided to bring it to Leavenworth. Samantha is a go-getter and she is making it have life.

What makes your business unique? It’s a blast from the past with all the old favorites from the 80s and 90s with some more modern games to help everyone relive their days and memories of the local arcade. It was a meeting place back then, a place where you could blow off steam and escape, if only for a brief moment.

The Retro-Cade Arcade opened May 17 in downtown Leavenworth.

What are your plans for the future with the business?

Are there many/any other places like this in Leavenworth?

We have big plans for the business and the community. We want to provide a full, family-fun center. We are looking at adding a virtual reality arena, mini putt putt, and if we get a bigger location, laser tag. If the community supports us we will grow. We are also working with the mayor on an at-risk teen program to mentor youth that may be in trouble to steer them on the right path. So business has been good and as the word spreads, we think it will be even better.

None exist and that’s what makes it special and unique.

What are some of the most popular games in your store? Q-Bert, Ms. Pac-Man, Centipede and Donkey Kong are very popular. We have about 50 different games that range from the classics, the shooters, racers and pinball.

How many employees do you have and what’s your hours of operation? We have five employees. We’re open Wednesday and Thursday from 2-9 p.m., Friday from 2-10 p.m., Saturday from 1-10 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

Will you host parties, special events? Yes, a party or event can be booked via our Facebook or website. We are working on getting a kitchen up and running and having a snack bar. We have applied for our liquor license and we will have adult-only hours when alcohol will be served 9 p.m. to midnight.

What is your contact information? Our website is www.The-Retro-Cade.com and we will be getting our phone set up soon. We update and promote the business on Facebook daily. – Mark Rountree

Agency cares for ‘tornado critters’ injured in storm By BETH KORNEGAY Special to the Times

Operation WildLife Director Diane Johnson had just stepped outside of the facility May 28 when she heard the nearby sirens in Lawrence going off. She quickly gathered volunteers and went to a nearby farmhouse which had a basement. Just as they got into the basement, they heard the sirens in Eudora and Linwood sounding. Johnson then described what she said sounded like a freight train bearing down on the group. Before entering the shelter, the group saw rotation above them and a tornado beginning to come out of the clouds. That tornado hit one-quarter mile away from the area they were seeking shelter, about one-half mile from the Operation WildLife facility. “It’s a hopeless feeling to know that you have absolutely no control over what is happening and that you can only pray that everything will make it through,” she recounted. Operation WildLife is the largest publicly funded wildlife clinic in the state of Kansas. The facility receives thousands of wild animals each year in need of rehabilitation with the goal

of releasing those animals back into their natural environment. They serve nearly 4,500 square miles in nine Kansas counties. The group releases nearly 70% of the animals back into nature, which is 20% higher than the national average. The property had some tree damage, outside pen damage, flooding and a lot of debris throughout the property. In less than 20 minutes, the brief storm generated three inches of rain. Operation Wildlife lost power, but Westar Energy was able to restore power just after 10:30 p.m. While the services the group could perform were curtailed due to the barricades in the surrounding area, the animals began to trickle in just after the storm hit. Since the organization receives injured, orphaned or displaced animals, it was no surprise that it was inundated with animals just hours after the tornado hit Linwood. An average of five animals per hour were being turned into Operation WildLife for the first 48 hours after the tornado hit. Some of those “tornado critters,” as they were dubbed, include two whitetailed deer fawns that were found

under the debris in Linwood. Two other white-tail deer fawns were found in flood waters in Atchison and Kansas

City, Kansas. They also received baby raccoons, including one with a broken leg, a juvenile red-shouldered hawk that linemen found while removing a tree and repairing power lines, and turtles, opossums and multiple birds since this is nesting season. “We haven’t assessed all of the damage yet because our primary concern has been the continued care of the animals,” Johnson said. “By the grace of God, we got lucky.” While many Kansas residents have donated to the relief efforts to families and businesses in Linwood, Operation WildLife also has similar needs. They are in urgent need of Walmart gift cards so fresh produce can be purchased for the animals that are being cared for. Financial donations are also appreciated so foods that need to be special ordered can be purchased. Checks can be sent to Operation WildLife at 23375 Guthrie Road, Linwood, KS, 66052 or through the organization’s paypal account. Making the best BLT in Leavenworth The bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich is one of my favorite sandwiches to eat. In fact, the BLT is probably one of your favorites as well, since this beloved combination is consistently rated the second most popular sandwich in America – right after the ham sandwich. Even though it is my favorite, I rarely order a BLT when I’m at a restaurant for a couple of reasons. First, while it is seemingly very simple a lot can go wrong – soggy bread, salty bacon, under- or over-ripe tomatoes and flimsy lettuce. Maybe I’m a stickler, but if I’m eating a BLT it is going to be the best BLT that can be made. And secondly, when you order a BLT in a restaurant, let’s be honest, you’re paying for the french fries on the side more than anything. It is because of this that I prefer making my BLTs at home with the best and freshest ingredients possible. When I decided I was going to write about the BLT though, I thought I would try to find and promote the best BLT in town, but I half-heartedly searched all over Leavenworth and only saw it on a handful of menus. Realistically, due to my proclivity for making them at home, my mind was already made up and instead I decided I was going to make the best BLT in Leavenworth. With this self-imposed challenge, I

LISA SWEET Food Freak

headed off to the Leavenworth Farmers Market on a sunny Saturday morning. I went on a hunt for the best ingredients I could find and it was a lot easier than I imagined. Thank you local

farmers and artisans. The first ingredient I found was the “T.” River’s Edge Produce, from Platte City, Missouri, was selling a huge array of fresh and beautiful vegetables and on display, beckoning to me were probably the best heirloom tomatoes I have seen in a long time. I chose one of the ripest, fattest, juiciest, but still firm red-purple tomato. Then without missing a beat it was time for me to find my “B.” Right next to River’s Edge was Jet Produce and Meats. I was extremely excited to go to their booth because just a few weeks earlier I “discovered” them during my research looking for bacon to use for my sandwich. I had met the owner’s father at their on-site store while I purchased some of their regular bacon. Of course, I managed to work in my love of the BLT

to our ensuing conversation, to which he excitedly told me that they were developing BLT bacon. What is BLT bacon you ask? Jet Produce and Meats makes this innovative product from the pork shoulder. They smoke it in applewood and slice it in a rectangular-oval-ish shape so when you fry up the bacon it is the perfect shape and size to fit on your bread. I would call it the Leavenworth version of Canadian bacon. Does that make sense? And for $6.99 a pound, it’s also a great deal. I was going to look elsewhere for my “L” but I couldn’t pass up the huge head of green-leaf lettuce for $2 a bunch at Jet. Green-leaf not only looks good on a sandwich but it is just the right amount of crispness and flavor that the BLT calls for. I couldn’t say no to both the price and quality. So what about the bread? As I was heading out I noticed that for $7 a loaf, the Hearth Bread Co. out of Weston, Missouri, was selling the most perfect, hearty sandwich loaf. It was as if the BLT fairies were sprinkling baconyscented fairy dust. With my ingredient list complete, I rushed home and quickly got to work. I fried up the BLT bacon and I toasted the bread. While those were working I cut one slice of tomato and plucked

one leaf of lettuce. Then when the bread popped up I smeared both slices with the only acceptable condiment, Hellman’s mayonnaise. Then I put the bacon down and it was as if the slices of bread that I cut (which were around one-half inch thick) were the perfect size for the BLT bacon and vice versa. I had a good feeling about this. Then I added the lettuce, followed by the tomato and the last piece of bread. This simple combination of the ingredients made what was one of the best sandwiches I have ever tasted. The BLT bacon made by JET Produce is a revelation. It is a tad chewy, but easy enough to bite through. While it doesn’t imbue the traditional crispy-fattiness some people prefer in their BLT, I loved it. It has the perfect amount of saltiness to lift up the flavor of the fresh tomato and lettuce. The bread stayed together and was firm and after I scarfed it down I threw down another. It’s all for the sake of research, mind you. With the help of the Leavenworth Farmers Market vendors, I made the best BLT in Leavenworth – The Leavenworth BLT. Please go to the market, get the ingredients and make it. I promise you will not be disappointed. Lisa Sweet writes about food for the Leavenworth Times. Contact her at foodfreaklvtimes@gmail.com
