Discover the joys of gardening You’ve always wanted to plant a garden, but you’ve been putting it off for years. No more excuses, it’s time to get started. Along with fresh air and exercise, gardening provides pretty things to look at and healthy things to eat. The key is to start off small. No one can learn everything overnight. Each season improves with the knowledge and experiences gained from the year before. Failure is a part of the learning curve. Just accept the fact that you’re going to kill a few plants – we all have. Gardening can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. The technical jargon will come to you in time, just focus on having fun. Start with six tomato plants or a single rosebush. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful garden. Whether by choice or necessity, being frugal can be good for your budget as well as the environment. About a year ago, Rachel and I decided to be more mindful of how we spend our money. A lot of the food we cooked went to waste, including the food from our garden. Wasted food is wasted money. Since we both work hard for our money, this was inexcusable. We can never get back the time that it took to earn the money that we so thoughtlessly threw away. It was time for us, especially me, to become more thrifty.
From the Garden
Ivan and Rachel Minnis Neither one of us grew up having unlimited funds to pour into our gardens. The gardens of each of our childhoods served a more practical purpose. They were the source of inexpensive food – nothing fancy, but certainly delicious – something we didn’t appreciate for years to come. Rachel and I have spent this past year rediscovering the simple pleasures in life that don’t cost a lot of money. We spend less time shopping and dining out and more time cooking together and tending to our garden. Having family nearby makes staying home even more satisfying. Being frugal doesn’t mean being cheap – it’s about making choices. Frugality is about getting the best value for our money or acquiring memories to last a lifetime. We live in a society that

values the accumulation of things more than the accumulation of memories. It’s easy to forget what’s really important. When faced with our own mortality, no one ever wishes they’d bought more things. Most people regret not spending more time with the people they love or doing the things they enjoyed most. Pare the costs of life down and dis-

cover the things that give you the most pleasure, oftentimes they’re the least expensive. There’s a garden to fit any budget. See for yourself why Rachel and I, along with millions of other gardeners, are so passionate about our hobby. Ivan and Rachel Minnis are avid gardeners in Leavenworth.

1. What is a brief history of your business?
2. What makes your business unique?
This year marks the 30th year for Homestead Greenhouse. The business is located on property that served as a family farm for Matt and Nellie Jones, (Julie’s) grandparents. Matt and Nellie purchased the land in 1921 and farmed the land and ran a dairy on the site. In 1989, we purchased the property from the family and Homestead Greenhouse was born.
Many of the plants we sell are grown right here on site. We take pride not only in the selection we offer but the quality of the plants. We are known for the unique hanging baskets and patio container combinations which we design and grow ourselves.
