First City Film Festival slated in March Submitted by the First City Film Festival Foundation
The annual Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, is the largest independent film festival in the United States. Sundance brings in more than 46,000 attendees every year to a town with a population of less than 8,000 permanent residents. The First City Film Festival’s organizers say they don’t expect to be anywhere close to that big anytime soon, if ever, but they hope the second year of the independent film festival in downtown Leavenworth brings a few new independent film lovers into town. “We want to bring people into the downtown area, show them what Leavenworth has to offer and give them the opportunity to love our town as much as we do,” festival director Tisha Swart-Entwistle said. The organizers say they also started the festival to bring another kind of art form into the area. “We began with the idea of bringing people into the area but we also very much wanted to give the Leavenworth area residents the opportunity to see these beautiful independent

films,” Swart-Entwistle said. In addition to the regular short and feature length film categories, the festival has a First City Student Short category that is open to students in Leavenworth County in grades 9-12. Organizers said engaging the local students is a large part of their
mission. “Eventually we would like to expand the footprint of the festival and be able to engage students early in the process,” Swart-Entwistle said. “Our goal is to be able to eventually bring experts in along the way and help the students from ‘I have this
idea for a film’ to ‘I’m going to submit this film to a festival’ and every step in between.” The festival committee said they are building on last year’s successes while keeping the basic format and schedule for the festival exactly the same. “What we did last year worked so well, we don’t want to change anything, just make it better,” SwartEntwistle said. One of the new things the organizers did this year was partner with the Leavenworth County Humane Society to bring the Bow Wow Film Festival under the umbrella of the Continued on page 7
First City Film Festival (Continued) First City Film Festival. The BWFF its a curated 90-minute program of short films celebrating the humananimal bond. LCHS, Inc., hosted the BWFF last summer as a fundraiser for the organization. The event was successful, but the LCHS, Inc., Executive Director Crystal Swann Blackdeer met with Swart-Entwistle soon after about combining the events to appeal to a greater local audience and give both organizations more reach. Both organizations say they are excited to see what the partnership will bring. The second annual First City Film Festival is March 21-24 at the Riverfront Community Center in downtown Leavenworth. This year’s festival will feature film screenings from local, national and international filmmakers (some who will be on hand for Q and As after the films), VIP events, filmmaker panels, after parties and an award’s ceremony. The schedule for the films and a link to purchase tickets will be up on the festival website, www.firstcityfilm.com

Royals look to make strides in 2019 There are many reasons for Royals fans to have some optimism heading into 2019 despite the team coming off of a 58-104 record in 2018. Despite the Royals having the second worst record in 2018, the team played better at the end of the season with a 20-14 record in their final 34 games. The team still is not close to the World Series level they were at just a few years ago, but if the team can pick up where Luke Peterson they left off in 2018, they could have a season that would be a step in the right direction. In traditional Royals fashion, the team did not make splashy signings in free agency. Instead, the team looks to continue to build for the future with youth through trades and the draft before losing stars when they become unaffordable for smallmarket teams like Kansas City. The biggest splash in this year’s free agency would probably be Billy Hamilton. The former Cincinnati Reds center fielder was brought in to help on defense and steal bases. Those two are perfect fits for manager Ned Yost’s style. Hamilton is not Lorenzo Cain and does not have the offensive firepower that Cain had in his time with the Royals, but he can play strong defense and steal a lot of bases. Hamilton owns the record in the minors for most stolen bases in a single season with 155 in 2012. He also owns the Reds’ record for most stolen bases in a season by a rookie. Hamilton paired with Whit Merrifield, Adalberto Mondesí and the return of Terrance Gore give the Royals one of the league’s most dangerous teams when it comes to stealing bases. If the Royals can get hits, expect to see a lot of steals. Chris Owings also joins the team to add more depth. He is versatile enough to play all over the field so he can be one of the first options off the bench for the team this year. Pitching-wise, the Royals look

to rely on Danny Duffy, Jake Junis and Brad Keller to lead the rotation. Ian Kennedy is someone to watch as his veteran status and salary increase his odds but his back to back disappointing seasons and injuries last season could push him to the bullpen. Speaking of the bullpen, that is an area to watch this season after it was a disaster last year. Wily Peralta played strong at the end of last season and the signing of former Diamondbacks closer Brad Boxberger gives the Royals two solid options for a closer. An interesting pitcher to watch will be Homer Bailey. The Reds signed Bailey to a six-year, $105 million contract in 2014 in a deal that quickly turned sour with
Bailey’s production significantly diminishing. In 2018, Bailey was 1-14 with a 6.09 ERA in 20 starts. He was sent to the Dodgers in the offseason with Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray in exchange for Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood, Kyle Farmer and cash. Bailey was released the same day by the Dodgers. He signed with the Royals three days before pitchers and catchers reported for spring training. Injuries, including a torn UCL requiring Tommy John surgery in 2015, have plagued the former promising pitcher. With a chance to start over, he could be someone to help in the Royals rebuild. If young players like Ryan
O’Hearn, Hunter Dozier and the group of base stealers all play well, pairing with the strong veterans of Salvador Pérez and Alex Gordon, the Royals could put together a better season than last year. If they play like they did at the end of last year, the Royals should be able to hit their expected win total of 69 games. Barring significant injuries, I think Kansas City will win at least 70 games this year and continue the climb back to the postseason again. St. Patrick’s Day Slated for March 17
By JOHN RICHMEIER St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday this year. And organizers of the 36th annual Leavenworth St. Patrick’s Day Parade plan to follow the tradition of having the event on March 17. The parade will start one hour later than usual because it will take place on a Sunday. The parade will begin at 1 p.m. March 17 in downtown Leavenworth. “I think the people enjoy it,” said Tim Scanlon, a coordinator of the annual parade. “There’s quite few people that come down every year.” By Feb. 11, there already were about 30 entries for the parade, and the number is expected to continue to grow. Scanlon believes many people wait until the last minute to enter a float in the parade because they want to know the weather forecast for the day of the event. Scanlon encourages people to make their entries early. An online entry application can be found at
the Leavenworth St. Patrick’s Day Parade website, www.lvirish.com Entry applications must be received by 9 a.m. March 14. Scanlon said the parade is orga-
nized by a committee of about 16 people. The parade will be following its traditional route in downtown Leavenworth.
The parade will start at Fourth and Cherokee streets. The parade will proceed east on Cherokee to Esplanade Street and then turn north. At Delaware Street, the
Parade parade will turn west. At Seventh Street, the parade will turn south before heading east again on Cherokee Street. The parade will end at Fifth and Cherokee streets. The parade lineup will begin at noon at Fourth and Walnut streets. Scanlon said the parade will take place rain or shine. “We’ve had it in the snow,” he said. “We’ve had it in the sleet. We’ve had it in the sunshine.” Others events are scheduled leading up to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. An Immaculate Conception Church Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 10 at the church’s Miege Hall, 711 N. Fifth St. Admission is $10 for adults and $3 for children, according to
the Leavenworth St. Patrick’s Day website. For more information, contact 913-682-3953. The Leavenworth Rotary Club will be having an annual Irish Stew Dinner from 5-7 p.m. March 11 at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St. For additional information or tickets, call 913-758-1035.
FILE “Malt Shop Memories” will be held March 8-9 at the Heritage Center.
‘Malt Shop Memories’ back for fifth season By MARK ROUNTREE mrountree@leavenworthtimes.com
The popular “Malt Shop Memories” show featuring hit songs from the juke box era will be held March 8-9 at the Heritage Center, 109 Delaware St. Each performance during the show’s four-year run has been a sellout, said show producer and performer Joshua Shockey. The show began as a one-night event in its inaugural year, but due to its popularity, it has grown into a two-night performance since. “We always sell out this show,” Shockey said. “It’s just so popular, we had to make it two nights. People love this music.” Shockey said it is not uncommon
14 Leavenworth County Living
to see people in the audience singing along with the songs they know by heart. The show features popular songs from the 1950s and 1960s, including “Be My Baby,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Teenager in Love,” “Band of Gold,” “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?” among others. “This show gives us an opportunity to perform music we grew up with,” said Shockey. “And it gives us a chance to show off local people who love to do this show.” The show includes a cast full of local people in the Leavenworth and Lansing communities. Many performers in the cast will dress in period clothing. Much like performers of the River
City Community Players, the cast is not financially compensated for their work. “They do it because they like to perform,” Shockey said. “And they get to eat for free.” The cast for this year’s show will be Jessica Holcombe, Rachel Duquette, Betty Welch, Thaneshia Lindsey, Maggie Fitzhugh, Brandon Johannes, Tisha Swart-Entwistle, Amy McClung, Anne Marie Hanson, Tracy McClung, Trish Gleisberg, Laura Grant, Melony Wood, Whitney Shockey and Joshua Shockey. The cast members range from 30 years old to 70 years old. The event is a dinner show. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. each night.
Tickets are $20 per person. Joshua Shockey said this will be the last year for “Malt Shop Memories” as there will not be a show next year. But a similar performance will take its place beginning in 2021. That performance will be called “Rockin’ the Juke Box.” “We have performed 110 songs in ‘Malt Shop Memories’ in the last four years,” Joshua Shockey said. “We are running out of songs that people know. The new show will allow us to span a few more years.” Shockey said he will produce a country music show in 2020. To purchase tickets for “Malt Shop Memories,” call the Heritage Center at 913-682-2122.

1. What is a brief history of your restaurant? This has been around since 1903. We are the second oldest restaurant building in Kansas. I bought it in October 1993 and named it Marfield’s Irish Pub. From 1940-1981, it was known as the DuBach Grill. The old-timers still call it that.
2. What are some of the popular items on your menu? Our best selling hamburger is the Sweet Sister Sadie. The Pigwich is our most popular sandwich. And we serve a wide variety of craft beers, only craft beers.
3. What makes your restaurant a go-to place in the area? Marfield’s is more of a restaurant than a tavern. I think we have the best food in town.
MARK ROUNTREE/LEAVENWORTH TIMES Dave Spangler, right, visits with patrons at Marfield’s Irish Pub.
4. Are you doing anything special for St. Patrick’s Day? Of course. We start serving breakfast at 8 a.m. that day. It will be corn beef and hash, bacon and eggs, etc. People will go to the parade downtown, then come back here. That’s when it gets wild. St. Patrick’s Day is one of our biggest draws of the year.
