1. What is a brief history of your business? In 2004, I went through a lifechanging event that magnified my desire I already had for Christ. I knew the importance of reading great books and loved searching for inspirational gifts but couldn’t always find what I wanted. So I decided to open a store to fulfill the need. I was born and raised in this small town and I knew the people in Leavenworth had a deep soul for Christ. I wanted books and products that influenced my family and other families trying to build a beautiful culture of values in their homes and life.
2. What makes your business unique? I didn’t want just a Christian book-

store. I saw no reason not to incorporate everything I loved throughout the store, although I had never seen it done before. So I buy things I love and useful gifts so customers don’t have to drive to Kansas City. We are known for meaningful, inspirational products which celebrate life occasions from birth to death and the milestones in between, all of them, the good the sad, the miraculous and the sacred.
medals and sacrament gifts. The gorgeous Swarovski Mariana jewelry made in Israel brings joy to many. It seems there is hardly a day that goes by that someone isn’t buying some token or inspirational item for a sick friend or relative. I would be remiss not to mention our “Where the Buffalo Roam” Leavenworth Tshirt with 66048 on the front pocket, along with many sunflower items or Kansas souvenirs.
3. What are some of the most popular items in your store?
4. Why is downtown Leavenworth a good place for a small business?
We still sell more books than anything, especially children’s books and baptism/baby items. Our greeting card wall brings in the most return customers and Catholic
There is a strong culture of community support in Leavenworth, Fort Leavenworth and the entire county. When the residents started to understand that the sales tax stays
in their community directly effects them they jumped right in with the right attitude and supported small businesses. Small business retail is safer today than big-box stores. If people want an automated shopping experience they just go online. Small stores offer customer service, relationships, knowledge of products and none are the same so the shopper enjoys the experience. Customer after customer who travel from Kansas City or outlining areas always comment on how much they enjoy and value small-town shopping. We really have a good thing going here, and I am thankful to be part of it.

T-Bones offer fun entertainment As the weather gets nicer, outdoor activities continue to grow. After the harsh winter, it is time to get out and enjoy the fresh air. One of the best ways to do that is to attend a baseball game. There are so many options in the area with the Kansas City Royals being a big hitter but other options are available in various age levels including another professional baseball team – the Kansas City T-Bones. The T-Bones will kick off their season as defending champs on May 17 at home against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. The T-Bones are one of 12 teams in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, a professional baseball league independent from the MLB and their minor league affiliates. The T-Bones began play in 2003 after the Duluth-Superior Dukes relocated to Kansas City, Kansas. The team plays in T-Bones Stadium, formerly known as CommunityAmerica
Ballpark, located in the Village West development at the Legends Outlets. Players on the T-Bones and in the league have various levels of experience at the college, Luke Peterson minor and major league levels. While the team may not have the big names, it still has fun baseball for the family to enjoy. Like other baseball teams across the country, the T-Bones will host a variety of promotions during the season, including nightly promotions. This is always one of my favorite parts of baseball. Each team at all levels of baseball does something fun to sell some extra tickets and get more fans in the stands. I have
had some fun memories going to various baseball team’s promotional nights over the years. Being from Omaha originally, most of mine have come with the Omaha Royals/Storm Chasers. I attended multiple games in elementary school as part of their “All About Kids Day” and got to see the band Switchfoot perform after a Storm Chasers game. I look forward to getting down to one of the T-Bones games this year for their various promotions. Tuesdays offer seats in the choice sections of the stadium – two for the price of one. Thursdays offer $1.50 beer and hot dogs. Fridays feature the Falcon Skydiving team in a pregame fly-in. Saturdays have postgame fireworks. New this season is Sunday Funday where kids can play catch on the field with T-Bones players in pregame, run the bases after the game and eat free. Some of the different theme nights on Fridays include Disney, Superhero and Margaritaville. The
team also has nights for military and first responders and a Bark in the Park night where lots of dogs will fill the stadium to watch some baseball. New this season is a thank you to teachers. Teachers who show their school ID badge at the Saint Luke’s Health System Box Office at Gate B will get a free ticket in the Blue Devil Den as the promotion is sponsored by Kansas City Kansas Community College. The promotion is available for all games except Saturday and upgrades are available for a fee. Promotions like this and the close proximity to Leavenworth makes the T-Bones a great choice to attend some ball games this spring and summer. For more information about the T-Bones, visit the team’s website at www.tbonesbaseball.com Luke Peterson is the sports editor for the Leavenworth Times. Contact him at lpeterson@leavenworthtimes.com
