New early childhood center to open in Basehor By MARK ROUNTREE mrountree@leavenworthtimes.com

The director of a new early childhood learning center says that the agency is not a day care. “We will have learning activities throughout the day,” said Shannon Trowbridge, director of the Discover Academy in Basehor. “We provide an education environment that’s loving, nurturing and safe at all times. We aim to deliver a program that encourages children to discover, learn and succeed.” The business is an early education center for children ages six weeks to 6 years old. “I’m super excited,” she said. “I can’t wait to get the kids in here. I excited to see the kids catch on and learn and feel safe and loved.” Trowbridge said the center will use a theme-based model of instruction. Each classroom will have a weekly theme such as transportation, holidays, health and safety, etc. The curriculum also will include what Trowbridge calls “handwriting without tears,” which is designed to make handwriting easy to teach and

easy to learn. Teachers also will monitor each student on a weekly basis to track developmental milestones and skills. Trowbridge said 24 students have signed up already, but she anticipates about 100 will be enrolled soon. Tuition is based on age. The cost for children 4-6 years old is $185 per week. The cost for infants is $275 per week. The center will provide breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. The Basehor center is the latest of the Discover Academy agencies in the area. The others are in Olathe and Gardner. Ten teachers have been hired as of mid-September, but Trowbridge anticipates the center will employ approximately 25 teachers soon. She said all teachers will go through extensive training before they enter a classroom. The center will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center is located at 15618 Pinehurst Drive in Basehor. For more information about Discover Academy, visit www.discoveracademyks.com or call 913-662-0022.

Tim Hornik tosses the ceremonial first pitch before the Kansas City Royals game Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Blind veteran tosses out first pitch at game By MARK ROUNTREE mrountree@leavenworth

On Nov. 11, 2004, U.S. Army Capt. Tim Hornik was on patrol in Baghdad when he was shot in the head by a sniper. It resulted in the total loss of his eyesight. Since then, the 38-year-old has been on a mission to demonstrate that people with impaired vision can do anything. Hornik was among 13 visually impaired veterans who regularly receive treatment and support from the Veteran’s Administration who were the special guests of the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night in their game against the Chicago White Sox at Kauffman Stadium on the 17th anniversary of 9/11. “I’m ecstatic that this all came together,” Hornik said. “You can’t replace what the VA does for veterans.” Hornik threw out the ceremonial first pitch Tuesday night. Flanked by program members and active duty members of the armed forces – as well as his service dog Barney, a black Labrador – the right-hander stood in front of the mound, was directed where to throw and tossed the pitch to backup catcher Cam Gallagher. The pre-game ceremonies on Armed Forces Night included the color guard from Fort Leavenworth and a flyover by a Stealth bomber from Whiteman Air Force Base. There are approximately 200 veterans in the VA Eastern Kansas Health

Care System’s visually impaired program. “They leave me speechless,” said Dawn Clouse, program director. “They are such special people. Tim is a perfect example. He’s all about other people. He’s all about educating that visually impaired people can do anything.” After the first pitch Tuesday night, Hornik was presented the ball. He then gave the ball to Clouse, who organized the trip along with Joe Burks, public affairs officer for the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System. Clouse said the VA tries to do at least two significant outings each year with the visually impaired group. “The group is just veterans coming together to interact and regain a

sense of independence,” Hornik said. Not all of the veterans are 100 percent blind. Clouse said the majority of the members in the group

have age-related or disease-related visual impairments. Only a few, like Hornik, are blind because of combat injuries. Bernard Hoffman, a 93-year-old World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, is a member of the program as well. He visited throughout the evening with Hornik and others at the game. “He’s very personable and congenial,” Hoffman said. “This program is good for him and all of us. It’s a marvelous program.” Hornik was just as impressed with Hoffman. “The intergenerational aspect of this program is an amazing thing,” Hornik said. “They have some amazing stories. For us in the younger generation, we are carrying their stories into the future.” Hornik is the CEO of the Blind Not Alone organization and serves as the director of District 2 of the Blinded Veterans Association. He lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with his wife and daughters. In addition to his outreach efforts in support of the visually impaired, he takes part in adaptive sports such as tandem cycling and running. “It’s a honor to be able to recognize veterans who have done so much for our country on Armed Forces Day, especially our visually impaired veterans here tonight,” said Randy Klopfer, director of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System.

eavenworth Parks and Recreation is once again hosting Haunted Depot at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St. The event, which will take place from 5-10 p.m. Oct. 20, is one of many Halloween events happening in the area. The basement level of the community center in Leavenworth will be transformed by the Leavenworth High School repertory theater class into a Halloweentheme event space.

Children take a break on the curb.

12 Leavenworth County Living

The event features the “Scaredy Cat” tour for youngsters and will include a Halloween festival in the gymnasium. There will be trick or treating games, bounce houses, food vendors and music. The “Nightmare on Esplanade Street” is designed for older children and adults and not for the faint of heart. Tickets for the “Scaredy Cat” tour from 5-6:30 p.m. are $7 for the tour and festival or $2 for the festival only. Continued on page 13

Tickets for the “Nightmare on Esplanade Street” from 7-10 p.m. are $5. The 31st annual Halloween Costume Parade/Contest and Great Pumpkin Giveaway will be held Oct. 27. There is no fee to participate. The event is sponsored each year by Coldwell Banker Reilly & Sons/Reilly Insurance. Children will be dressed up in all manners of Halloween costumes for the parade and contest. The parade consists of a short walk from Haymarket Square in downtown Leavenworth to Reilly & Sons, 602 Delaware St. After the parade and contest, there will be refreshments and activities provided to the children. The parade and costume contest typically attracts a large crowd in downtown Leavenworth. Last year, organizers said more than 1,000 people showed up to enjoy the festivities. The event is held rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place under the parking canopy at Reilly Plaza. The Friends of the Frontier Army Museum will host the Haunted Fort Leavenworth Tour Oct. 26-27 at the museum, 100 Reynolds Ave. on the military installation. Numerous schools will be hosting Halloween-related activities during the run-up to Halloween. Xavier Catholic School will host a truck or treat event Oct. 26 in the parking lot of the main campus, 541 Muncie Road. The event is free, but donations will be accepted for a food drive. Children can come dressed in costumes and collect treats out of the backs of vehicles parked in the lot. Nearly 200 million American celebrate Halloween each year, according to www. bestproducts.com Last year, data indicates that Americans spent $9.1 billion on Halloween costumes last year, spending an average of $86 per costume. Popular costumes this year could be “Black Panther,” “Wonder Woman” and “Venom.” There are several good safety tips for children on trick or treat adventures. Children should always cross the street at corners using the traffic signals. Electronic devices can be a distraction and should be put away. Children should always look out for cars turning or backing up. Costumes should include reflective tape. Glow sticks and flashlights can be used as well so that children can be seen by drivers. Costumes should be the right size to prevent trips and falls. When driving, motorists should be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Enter and exit driveways with caution.

The Zach Clements family Parade walkers show off their costumes.

Pioneer Career Center offers something for everyone By MARK ROUNTREE mrountree@leavenworthtimes.com

Students can explore 12 different career paths in a hands-on environment while earning college credit at the KCKCC Pioneer Career Center in Leavenworth. The career center, located at 1901 Spruce St. in Leavenworth, offers technical certificate and associate degree programs. The courses are open to community members seeking to further their education and career opportunities, as well as high school juniors and seniors. “Not everyone has a desire to go to college,” said Marcia Irvine, director of the Pioneer Career Center. “We offer hands-on instruction that can lead to a marketable career.” Tuition for high school students is minimal or no cost at all. The center has been located at its current location for three years and it has seen significant growth. Three years ago, there were only 25 students in the technology program. Now, there are more than 100. There are more than 400 total students in the technology and general education

programs. Culinary arts and health careers continue to be the most popular offerings at the technical training school. In the culinary arts program, students learn fundamental skills of food service in hotels, restaurants, hospitals, catering, etc. “I hope to get training here so I can go almost anywhere,” said Leavenworth High School junior Hailey Riddle, who said she wants to work in the food industry, possibly as a chef. In the certified nurses assistant course, students learn basic nursing skills and concepts needed to function as a nurse’s assistant. Another popular offering is the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration course. Jon Melendez, 26, was looking for a trade after he got out of the military. He enrolled in the HVAC program, and said he is learning marketable skills. “There’s no better place to get hands-on training,” he said. Also popular is the course in construction technology in which students prepare for careers in

plumbing, electrical, masonry and carpentry. An administrative office professional program is designed to prepare students to work in an office environment. New courses added this year are biomanufacturing, cyber security, criminal justice and robotics. “The world today is based on technology,” said Lansing High School senior Matthew Lee, who is enrolled in the cyber security program. “I’m interested in computers and programming, and the cyber security program sounded interesting. I’m learning a lot.” There are seven full-time teachers in the technology program and 45 adjunct teachers in the general education program. Melissa Davis has been an English teacher and academic adviser at the school since 1994. She said she has taught students in high school as well as grandparents.
