Friday night football is unique
By MARK ROUNTREE mrountree@leavenworthtimes.com
School pride will be running high at prep school football stadiums in the area in the upcoming weeks. It’s football time in Kansas, and there’s something special and unique about the hometown players strapping on the gear and defending their school’s honor. Friday night football has arrived. “Friday nights in the fall, that’s high school football,” said Gary Mattingly, athletic director at Lansing High School. “On Friday nights in the fall, that’s the place to be.” For the next 2.5 months, local high school players will hit the field with pride. In the grandstands, it will be no different. Families, many with deep roots to the school, will be wearing the school colors and cheering on the hometown team. There’s nothing quite like high school football on a fall Friday night. “It just doesn’t get any better than high school football on Friday nights in the fall,” said Mark Littrell, head coach at Leavenworth High School. Littrell should know. He’s entering his 42nd year as a high school football coach. He’s been a part of quite a few Friday night football games. “It’s always a special evening and a special time

of year,” he said. Teams play just once a week, usually on Friday, so there is a growing anticipation as the week progresses until kickoff. “There’s always a build-up during the week,” said Mattingly. “As the week goes along, it’s just gets ramped up until Friday night.” “You can feel the vibe in school throughout the week,” said Ross Schwisow, Basehor-Linwood athletic director. “It’s more than a game. It’s just once a week. It’s an event. It’s something special. There’s no other sport or activity that has that kind of lead-up to a single game.” At the schools, posters will be created by the support groups and taped on the lockers of the
players, showing their support and wishing them good luck in the upcoming game. At most schools, players on the team will wear their uniform jerseys at school on Fridays. Friday night is not just for the players on the team. Members of cheer squad, dance team and band also are on center stage under the Friday night lights. “For them too, Friday night is a huge night,” Mattingly said. The fever of Friday night football goes to a higher pitch during homecoming week. Assemblies will be held and bonfires will be ignited during the homecoming festivities. Alumni, some from long, long ago, will return to the school to root on their Pioneers or Lions or Rams or Bobcats. “Homecoming is always a fired up week,” Mattingly said. “You have the parade, the festivities, the alums and the game.”

The fall festival season is about to begin, and Leavenworth County residents don’t have far to go to enjoy them. A host of events are slated in the coming weeks in the area, including a barbecue festival, an apple festival, numerous city festivals and a festival that features all things of the Renaissance. Leavenworth Main Street will host the Hog Wild BBQ contest Sept. 7-8 in downtown Leavenworth. The event will be held in the 200 block of Cherokee Street and feature games and activities for children, contests, live music and the barbecue contest. The cover band M80s will be the featured musical performers at the event. There will also be an acrobatic group, strolling magicians, face painting and many vendor booths. “Everybody loves the fall festivals, said Wendy

Scheidt, executive director of Leavenworth Main Street. “It’s good, clean, family fun.” The Lansing Fall Festival will be held Oct. 13 along Angel Falls Trail. The trail is located behind St. Francis de Sales Church, 900 Ida St. in Lansing. The event will feature musicians stationed along the trail, a petty zoo, activities for children, pony rides, a bounce house, kiddie train rides and a wide assortment of vendor booths. “September and October is probably the busiest time of year for festivals,” said Tim Dossey, event and marketing coordinator for the city of Lansing. “It’s definitely one of my favorite times of the year. The days are warm and it cools down at night. You have the changing colors. And all of these festivals and events.” The Kansas City Renaissance Festival begins another season over the Labor Day weekend. The festival grounds are located at 633 N. 130th St. in Bonner Springs, Kansas. The festival, which runs for seven weeks, is open every Saturday and Sunday along with Columbus Day and Labor Day. The festival features numerous shops that sell innovative arts and crafts, as well as a wide assortment of food and beverage vendors. The festival features a variety of Renaissance performers doing skits and plays throughout the day. The Weston Applefest Celebration is slated for Oct. 6-7. The event will be held along Main Street in Weston, Missouri. The event features a variety of apple-related treats, as well as numerous arts and crafts booths. There will also be activities and games for children. The Kansas City Irish Fest is slated for Aug. 31 to Sept. 2. The event is located in the 2400 block of Grand Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. The festival features all things Irish, including live music, dance performances, children’s

activities and much more. The American Royal World Series of Barbecue is set for Sept. 13-16 at Kansas Speedway, located at 400 Speedway Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. The famous barbecue festival is noted as the largest barbecue competition in the world. The festival features more than 500 chefs, pitmasters and amateur teams in an array of categories. Many cities within a 60-mile radius of Leavenworth will feature some sort of fall festival, many with a particular theme. “Experience local,” Scheidt said. “You don’t have to drive two or three hours to an event. It’s amazing what all of the offerings we have locally. And a lot of it is free.” It’s fall festival season. Enjoy! Renaissance Festival couple.

Shaman Botanicals, 728 Shawnee St., has been a go-to destination for community residents who have health issues – especially pain – and who don’t want to be faced with the risks of taking opioids. When Ric Almack and Kathleen Wade moved to Lansing a few years ago, they fell in love with the area. They felt so welcome and more at home than anywhere they had lived. They were eager to be part of the community and wanted to open a business. They also wanted to share the health benefits they had received from cannabis oil with others who were experiencing health problems. The couple had contracted Lyme’s disease and they were left in a very bad condition. They decided to try CBD oil. They are now enjoying good health and they say CBD oil brought them back from Lyme’s death knell. They both still take the oil to maintain their health. Their customers also tell them how great the CBD has made their lives. Since the business has been in operation, word has spread quickly that the CBD oil and other products that are offered can offer a safe and effective alternative to prescription and over-thecounter drugs. The products are legal to use and provide health benefits in treating acne, Alzheimer’s, pain relief, anti-psychosis, anxiety, arthritis and autoimmune issues. The products also boost the immune system, curb cigarette addiction, combat the spread of cancer. The products also help with Crohn’s Disease, depression, diabetes, digestion, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, viruses, glaucoma, inflammation, multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, PTSD, seizures, Parkinson’s Disease, migraines and much more. Unlike marijuana, which is bred for its THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content – the element which gets you “high” – hemp oil has no psychoactive effect. Hemp oil has also been extensively studied by the medical community and has no known side effects. Cannabis therapies have been a part of human history for thousands of years, and archeological evidence has even shown that hemp and cannabis were a chief cultivated crop thousands of years ago. How does it work? CBD is a non-psychoactive compound in cannabis and hemp that doesn’t make you high. Inside the human body there’s the endocannabinoid system, with receptors spread throughout the brain and body. Cannabinoid receptors are involved in a series of processes inside the human body, including the regulation of mood, pain sensation, appetite and memory. These receptors can be activated by endocannabinoids (produced by the human body) as well as by plant cannabinoids (like those found in hemp or cannabis), and they’re grouped in two main categories: CB1 and CB2.

and inflammation. Then, CBD inhibits theFAAH enzyme, a compound that activates the CB1 receptor. By doing so, CBD minimizes the activation of CB1 by THC, reducing its psychoactive effects. High concentrations of CBD have been shown to activate the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor, exerting antidepressant effects. The same receptor is involved in a series of processes from pain perception, appetite, nausea and anxiety to sleep and addiction mechanisms. Finally, CBD blocks CPR55 signaling, decreasing bone re-absorption and cancer cell proliferation. GPR55 is widely present inside the brain, being linked with the modulation of bone density and blood pressure, as well as with cancer cell proliferation. American Shaman is full spectrum and uses the highest quality CBD oil. There are different forms of the oil and different strengths and flavors. Shaman Botanicals also offers oil tinctures, water solubles, pet products, lotions and capsules, custom essential oil, organic soap, candles and sugar scrubs. No prescription is required, but people are urged to consult their physicians before starting any nutritional supplement program.

CB1 receptors are found mostly in the central nervous system, and in smaller numbers in the liver, kidneys and lungs, while CB2 receptors are part of the immune system and found in the hematopoietic blood cells as well. CB1 plays a role in the production and release of neurotransmitters, cannabis products that exert psychoactive effects stimulating these receptors. At the same time, CB1 receptors are involved in the lipogenesis process that takes place inside the liver, and seem to play a role in the maintenance of homeostasis (body’s internal equilibrium). Various studies suggest that CB1 also influences pleasure, concentration and appetite, memory and pain tolerance. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, affect the immune system, being involved in a variety of functions like immune suppression or apoptosis (programmed cell death). Studies suggest that CB2 modulates the pain sensation and could play a role in various diseases, from liver and kidney problems to neurodegenerative diseases. CBD does not stimulate these two receptors. Instead, it activates other receptors, like the vanilloid, adenosine and serotonin receptors. By activating the TRPV-1 receptor, for example, cannabidiol plays a role in the mediation of body temperature, pain perception

Voters to decide $57.1 million school bond issue By JOHN RICHMEIER jrichmeier@leavenworthtimes.com
Voters in the Basehor-Linwood school district have until Sept. 6 to return their ballots for a $57.1 million bond issue. Mail-in ballots are being used for the school bond election instead of traditional poll locations. Voters in the school district should have received their ballots in the mail around Aug. 17. If approved, the bond issue would pay for the construction of two elementary schools, an early childhood education center, an addition to Basehor-Linwood Middle School, renovation of the Basehor-Linwood High School football field and other facility improvements. Basehor-Linwood Superintendent David Howard cites growth in the district as a major reason for the school bond election. He said the district’s enrollment is growing between 3 and 3.5 percent each year. “We know we’re going to need the facility space,” he said. Howard believes the bond issue can be implemented without increasing the district’s mill levy, which is used in determining property taxes. This is because of additional tax revenue resulting from increases in

property valuation. According to information provided by the school system, assessed valuation for the district increased by more than $14 million this year. By estimating a conservative increase each of the next few years, bond advisers for the district believe the mill levy can remain flat. Ballots sent to voters break up the bond issue into two components. And voters can vote for or against each component. The first component is for projects that total $51.6 million. These projects include the proposed construction of two elementary schools. According to Howard, one of the new buildings would provide an additional elementary

Q5 with Krystal Hagemaster
Now that’s a good deal $140 worth of gift certificates for seven local restaurants for $39
The Leavenworth Times is sponsoring a program in which people can get discounts on several restaurants and entertainment venues in town. Advertising account executive Krystal Hagemaster talks about the program. Krystal, what is Access Eats and who is sponsoring it? Access Eats is being sponsored by the Leavenworth Times. It is a way for people to get $140 worth of gift certificates to area restaurants and entertainment venues for $39.  How does it work? And what are the benefits? There are a limited number of gift certificates available. The gift certificates can be bought online at www.getaccesseats.com/lvtimes/ or at our office. You will get a booklet of seven $20 gift certificates for the participating restaurants and entertainment venues. Why is this a great way for people to try out the excellent restaurants in our community? This is an excellent way to have people try a restaurant or entertainment venue that they may
not have thought about before. Maybe you have thought, “Hey, I would love to try this place and see what it is all about. Now you can go there and try something new. Or maybe it is a place you know you love already. You now own a $20 gift certificate to that place.  What restaurants are included in this special offer? Are there a limited number of these voucher books being sold? The participating businesses are Ten Penny Restaurant & Bar, All Slabbed Up BBQ, Ross’s 20th St. Bar & Grill, Tampico Authentic Mexican Restaurant, Marfield’s Irish Pub, The Depot and Crown Lanes. There are a limited number of gift certificate booklets. We only have 300. How can people find out more information about Access Eats and purchase a voucher book? You can go to www.getaccesseats.com/lvtimes/ or come to our office at 422 Seneca St. Booklets are on sale now and you can bring your receipt and pick up your Geft Certificate Booklet at our office beginning Monday, July 30, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Be sure to bring your photo ID. – Rimsie McConiga
