SUNDAY, SEPT. 23 | TOM STONE, a violinist formerly of the Cypress String Quartet, joins Duo Terlano, featuring Dr. Johannes Dietrich, violinist and Newton and Adelaide Burgner Endowed Professor of Instrumental Music at LVC, and Dr. Marie-Aline Cadieux, cellist.
We continue to improve our teaching and performance facility and instrument collection. This summer, we plan to install digital technologies in the instrumental rehearsal hall, and soon hope to begin renovations of practice rooms and the choral rehearsal room. We continually update our instrument inventory and purchased two grand pianos this year, including a new Boston GP 193 for Studio A.
SUNDAY, NOV. 4 | LVC hosts the PENN STATE UNIVERSITY CONCERT CHOIR for the world premiere of Dr. Scott Eggert’s MEMORIA: A Cantata for the Centenary of the Armistice. Eggert is LVC professor emeritus of music. The concert will be held in conjunction with the Witness to War exhibition in the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery.
I’m pleased to report that Dr. Jeffrey Lovell, Chair and Professor of Music associate professor of music, will serve as associate chair in music beginning this fall. Dr. Lovell has an excellent record as a music educator and performer, and will lead departmental initiatives with a focus on student success.

Choirs Perform at Regional and State Festivals LVC choirs were invited to perform at the Pennsylvania American Choral Directors Association meeting, held at Susquehanna University (fall 2018), and at the annual Pennsylvania Music Educators Association annual conference, held in April 2018 at the Lancaster Convention Center. New Curricula Offerings Our newest minor in MUSIC THEATER requires three courses in musical theater (history, repertoire, and song interpretation), three courses in theater (production and acting), and three semesters of voice lessons. It is a collaborative effort between the Music Department (led by Michael Hadary, artist-teacher of studio voice and music theater) and English (led Dr. Kevin Pry ’76, professor of English and College dramaturge). MODERN BAND, our new graduate certificate, is a 12-credit program for in-service teachers that focuses on popular music. It includes courses in guitar, bass, keyboard, and drum set. Utilizing the Music as a Second Language pedagogy, participants perform, compose, and improvise individually and with peers. Through these experiences, participants will develop strategies for their classrooms and teaching environments. Modern Band is music for all. Dr. Morell Hits Miami In May, Dr. Justin Morell traveled to the University of Miami to attend a recording session of his new work, “Concerto for Guitar and Jazz Orchestra.” The university hired world-renowned jazz guitarist Adam Rogers as a soloist, who performed with the university jazz band under director Dr. John Daversa. The recording is slated to be released on BFM Jazz in fall 2018. In celebration of the CD release, Rogers and Morell will be invited back to Miami for a live premiere performance and a series of clinics with students. The Brazilian Program In 2015 Dr. Shelly Moorman-Stahlman, professor of music and College organist, began a cultural exchange program with music education students from Brazil. Each January, students from Brazil visit LVC to study music in American Churches and to work with LVC faculty. Throughout the year, MoormanStahlman travels to Brazil with LVC students. This summer Dr. Sharon G. Davis, director of music education, joined Moorman-Stahlman and three music education students—Robin
McAnally ’18, Abby Stoner ’19, and Rachel Schulz ’19—to travel to four cities in Brazil. They gave workshops in handbells, tone chimes, bucket drumming, and boomwhackers and the students performed handbell concerts. Moorman-Stahlman gave a concert tour, including an appearance with the Mogi das Cruzes Orchestra at the Festival do Inverno, the largest classical music festival in Latin America. Dr. Kyle Zeuch joins the LVC community as director of choral activities. He holds a bachelor of music in music education from Capital University and a master’s and D.M.A. in choral conducting from Michigan State University (MSU). Zeuch served as director of children and youth choirs at MSU’s Community Music School. As the head director at Rivera High School in Brownsville, Texas, Zeuch was named the Texas Choral Director Association’s Distinguished Young Director in 2010. Under his direction, Zeuch’s choirs have performed at state conferences, throughout Europe, and on the stage of Carnegie Hall.
Our previous choral director, Dr. Matthew Erpelding, has moved to Iowa, where he will be the choral director at Valley High School in West Des Moines. We wish Dr. Erpelding continued success as a composer, conductor, and teacher.
After 35 years at LVC, James Erdman retired this spring as adjunct instructor in music, low brass. Before coming to LVC, he was trombone soloist with the United States Marine Band, The President’s Own. He performed coast to coast with world renowned soloists and has given masterclasses and clinics at various music schools across the nation. We wish him a well-deserved and active retirement.
Dr. Gregory Strohman ’08 won a highly competitive search for the position of adjunct instructor in music, low brass. Strohman is a graduate of the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University and Lebanon Valley College. In 2007 and 2008 Strohman was selected as a finalist in the International Trombone Association’s Larry Wiehe and Marstellar Competitions. He is equally at home as a classical and jazz musician and has performed professionally as a trombonist with many musical organizations.
After 30 years at LVC, Robert Nowak retired this summer from teaching percussion. Nowak built our percussion program from only a few instruments and students to the large and multi-faceted studio and hundreds of alumni of today. We will celebrate his retirement during the Music Department’s Homecoming Open House on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, from 10 a.m. until noon in the lobby of the Bertha Brossman Blair Music Center.
Symphony Orchestra Prize Finalists Congratulations to Dr. Johannes Dietrich and the Lebanon Valley College Symphony Orchestra for placing as finalists in this year’s American Prize in Orchestral Programming. Other finalists include orchestras from Oklahoma State University, Davidson College, Cornell University, and the University of Washington. The Lebanon Valley College Chamber Orchestra performed concerts in Virginia and Maryland in October 2017, including at Walkersville High School, where the orchestra was hosted by LVC alumnus Alexander Loy ’12. In March, the LVC Symphony Orchestra and string ensembles performed at Pine Street Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg as part of the Wednesday Club Guest Artist Series. The Symphony Orchestra is planning a return trip to Europe, tentatively scheduled for mid-May of 2020. This trip will include performances in Berlin, Leipzig, and Prague. As with previous trips, we welcome the participation of alumni—as orchestra members or as tour participants. Details for the tour will be posted on the LVC Symphony Orchestra Facebook page early in the fall. Anyone interested in participating is welcome to contact Dr. Dietrich directly.
