LEMP BREWERY ADAPTIVE REUSE My second semester of option studio at Washington University was a comprehensive studio dealing with the adaptive reuse of a complex of 18 former grain silos on the campus of the former Lemp Brewery in St. Louis. The program explored the combination of a data center with a museum for digital art. The project sought to embrace (rather than conform) the form of the silos as a container for the new program.

RED LINE APARTMENTS This graduate studio tackled the issue of contemporary infill housing in a historical neighorhood. Starting with elevation studies, students developed designs for 2-6 unit apartment buildings in the Parkview Gardens ’ 62 neighborhood in St. Louis. The project lasted 15 weeks and designs grew to a high level of technical detail.

RECLAIM. RETHINK. RESUSCITATE. The proposed program for my Degree Project is a complex for craft industry, including workshops, retail space, and classrooms. Whereas historical industrial development cuts through the urban fabric, this new industrial use seeks to stitch it back together. The architectural solution, then, is largely inspired by the idea of stitching. The project consists of various layers of program and materiality that are stacked and sewn together at various points.

VANDEGROVE I was first hired at UIC (Urban Improvement Company) to lead an independent research project that would culminate in a proposed masterplan for about a 2 square mile portion of Saint Louis City. I, along with two interns, conducted a detailed inventory and analysis of the area, and worked with the firm owners to propose specific areas of intervention. The intention is that this masterplan would serve as a framework for future development plans by the firm.

4321 MANCHESTER This project, a 20-unit apartment building with ground floor retail, was one of the largest that I worked on while at UIC. Working with our whole team of designers, my focus was primarily on exterior design concepts. I developed a number of iterations and renderings for the exterior facades. The project was completed in 2015.

The challenge of this project was to design a contemporary, desirable commercial rental space out of an outdated, EIFS-clad retail building on a busy street in the suburbs. The focus of the intervention was the entry canopy, which served to both highlight the main entrance to the building and to introduce a new material (cedar). The cedar also carried through to the new clerestory element on the two-story portion of the building.

FLOUNDER The “Flounder” and “Flounder Plus” are UIC’s answer to the starter home. The goal was to design a new, green home for around $200,000. Named for a style of house in Saint Louis that has a mono-pitch roof, the Flounder is a one-story, 2 bedroom, 1 bath house with a partial basement. The Flounder Plus has a partial second story, which adds another bedroom and bathroom. I was heavily involved in the design, documentation and marketing of these homes.

GADELLNET OFFICES Completed in 2015, this project is the adaptive reuse of an industrial building into the offices for a local IT firm. They wanted an open, collaborative office atmosphere, but also wanted to maintain a certain amount of privacy in individual workstations. Acoustic control was also an issue that was important. I was involved in the design process from the initial programming meeting, where we interviewed a number of the firm’s current employees to assess their desires and expectations. I was very involved in the design and layout of the office, as well as the finish selections.

KAISER PERMANENTE - SACRAMENTO Working with the Stantec Sacramento office, I served as primary designer for a complete facade upgrade and gut renovation of an existing medical office building in downtown Sacramento, CA. An indecisive client and fluctuating budget led to dozens of design iterations in the process. I produced diagrams, 3D models, and renderings, culminating in a complete Schematic Design package. The project is currently under construction.

DESIGN STATEMENT We’ve frequently referred back to the chapel as an example of a successful space on campus. One of its main qualities is the emphasis on community. The elliptical form focuses the congregation toward the center or worship, while also facing the congregants toward one another. Anchoring the other end of the building is the library commons addition. The focus here is on both intellectual pursuits and collaboration. Again, an elliptical form in the floor opening and ceiling design seeks to emphasize the collaborative environment of a 21st century library, while tying back to the formal language of the chapel. Finally, we want to again echo this form in the design of the new entry/lobby space. At the center of the campus, this space seeks to emphasize community by welcoming students, staff, and visitors with a warm embrace. Here, the elliptical form conjures images from the parable of the prodigal son…God welcoming the sinner home with outstretched arms.

of the Seminary; the Library is the intellectural center of the seminary; and the new Entry/Lobby is now the literal center...the threshold welcoming all who enter seminary community.

This project, a 50,000 square foot addition and renovation project, is the first large scale project that I have worked on from programming through bidding. I led the architectural team in design, drafting, and coordination throughout all phases of design and documentation. The project’s main focus is the new library/ learning commons, which will replace their current library, a 6-story tower that is dark and outdated. The new library seeks to be an energetic and active space to promote 21st century learning, while still maintaining a certain amount of formality and cohesiveness with theSCHEMATIC rest ofDESIGN thePACKAGE seminary building.
