ABSTRACT
The proposition of a Filipino American Cultural Center at the Old Mint Building, 88-5th Street, San Francisco, California (5th Street & Mission Street) is to provide a place of refuge for the Filipino community so that they may be able to collaborate, communicate, continue to bring awareness and understanding to Philippines’ art and culture. The Old Mint San Francisco Building is almost 150 year old Greek Revival Style Doric Order built and designed in 1874 by Alfred Mullet that has withstand many earthquakes, fire, and many short-term tenants throughout its days.
The space will bridge the old and new generation Filipinos, and other Cultural Centers in the Bay Area such as National Japanese American Historical Society, Museo Italo Americano, Chinese Cultural Center of San Francisco, and Mission Cultural Center to name a few. And to honor, respect and keep the integrity of the Old Mint Building to complement the function of the space. I believe that the Old Mint Building and a Filipino American Cultural Center is a good fit its purpose because it will bring meaning to the building and to the people in the community.

Concept Statement Peacock or Pabo (Latin: Pavo Cristatus) is a living being that lives among us humans in the wild and with people. It signifies protection, wards away evil spirits, and gives nourishment to whomever brings respect and honor to its existence. The Filipino American Cultural Center is a place where the local residents and visiting guests of the community may experience a sense of Philippine culture through sensory experiences such as the taste and smell of food or the making of it, the hospitality of the community, hearing and seeing the culture with a new lens through language, dance, poetry, and film, and the small moments of what it feels like “at home” in South of Market. My intention for the space is to bring understanding to the culture and connect the community in a much deeper level because we are all interdependent of each other. Filipino American Cultural Center

The lounge bar on the second floor is a place where our guest may experience how a traditional way of eating in a Filipino community. This would be a place where our guest may wait and grab a drink while waiting for their reservation and/or waiting for their friends and family to be seated at the Kamayan dining area. The blue art abstract ceiling mimics the tropical beach island of the Philippines and kept the interior space more neutral. The furniture selection are a modern traditional version of what I call when you go to a Filipino’s formal living area. 12

The kamayan dining is a place where traditionally hands are used to eat in a communal long table with banana leaves as your place and your hands as your spoon, forks and knives to eat and drink. It brings the people together. The green foliage art abstract ceiling mimics the rainforest of the Philippines as the gold wall covering complements the space and the six grand 4 columns that stands in this space. 14

The experimental bar is a place where our guest may try exotic food that may be not traditional to the American cuisine. This space will provide a sense of all opinions matter good, bad or neutral. It is more of an experiential way of trying out food. This will be a place where an innovative chef may try different way of cooking an ingredient in the dish. Here is the view facing the booth area where our guest may enjoy the delicacy that the chef has cooked up that is innovative and new. With the Viola Caesarstone at the bar counter creates this purple glow that activates our creative process. 16

LIBRARY
The library is located on the north side of the building which received the sunrise and natural light in the morning. I thought it would be a good opportunity for the library, archives, and workshops for learning and educational purposes. The three component of the space planning represents the lounging area, meeting table, and individual study space. All four walls have bookshelves based on history which will be organized by chronological order, then by author or topic. I am still exploring how to go about this to connect with the rich history of the Philippines and current affairs of the Filipino community in San Francisco and around the world. Color psychologically, blue represents intelligence, communication, trust, efficiency, serenity, duty, logic, coolness, reflection, and calm. Orange represents physical comfort, food, warmth, security, sensuality, passion, abundance, and fun. I kept the color scheme complementary colors of blue and orange. Blue for calmness and orange for energy. Together brings a balanced energy to the space with the receiving natural light form the sun and artificial light produced in the interior space.

FILM SCREENING
The film screening room is located in the heart of the Old Mint Building. It is very dark and requires acoustical materials to keep the noise and vibrations to a minimum. Given my research and interview with Desi Danganan, Business Development of SOMA Pilipinas, he would like to have a film screening for film festivals. I thought the vault room would be a great space to turn into a film screening room. With the space planning being three areas to view for film so that the guest would have a front row view when seeing a film. It also signifies that three continental islands that makes Philippines: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. It also symbolizes the ray of the sun to give life and bring awareness and understanding to the past, present and future. Color psychologically, red represents physical courage, strength,

warmth, energy, basic survival, ‘fight or flight’, stimulation, masculinity, excitement. Green represents harmony, balance, refreshment, universal love, rest, restoration, reassurance, environmental awareness, equilibrium, peace. My main priority for this space is the sound so acoustical solutions are needed to be considered, secondly, design, materials, and colors. As I have mentioned from the acoustical application from previous module, the wood panels, flooring, wall materials, inner wall materials, art pieces are acoustics. This space will serve as a multi-purpose space when it may be used for guest speaking or peotry night event and it would be nice to have natural light reflecting from above. And the seatings be modular so that the space may flow appropriately to the event happening.

The performing arts theatre is located in the southwest space of the building, second floor. I wanted to keep the main focus in the middle, dance floor where the performance will be happening. The spot lights with be middle and kept the seating area dark as the light reflects throughout the space. I wanted to keep the space “light and airy.” I kept the floor, walls, and furniture neutral colors and materials. I placed minimal complimentary colors of yellow and dark purple on the rug and dance floor and carried over the wood like color for the beams ceiling and light blue sky like wallpaper texture on the ceiling to mimic the sky.
1
Color psychologically, purple represents spiritual, Optimism, confidence, self-esteem, extraversion, emotional strength, friendliness, and creativity. Yellow represents emotional, spiritual awareness, containment, vision, luxury, authenticity, truth, and quality. Grey represents neutrality. I think this is an appropriate color complement for this space as a performing arts theatre. From my research, the indigenous people perform impromptu and informally and decide that this space be like a community family room. Our guests may decide to sit on the floor, hence, carpet, chairs or stand. They may decide to also have something to eat or drink. When a performance happen, it is because of family events, celebration for an important event. Folklore dances are a must like Kulintang dance. The performer invites the guest to join in and be a part of the performance as a way of engaging with the culture.

ABSTRACT The property is located at 1540 Broadway in downtown Oakland, California. The current building will be demolished and replaced with the newly developed boutique hotel, Present Moment - M Hotel. The building structure is an eight story building including a rooftop and two level parking basement. The property is 11,749.05 square footage. As the client’s request for the scope of work that needed to be constructed, I, one of the interior designers, have been given a task of coming up with a creative conceptual plan, floor plan layout, materials, finishes, furniture selections, lighting design, and code compliance for the lobby area, cocktail lounge, restaurant, kitchen space, ballroom, banquet room, three small meeting rooms, health club, ADA restrooms, office suite, backof-house, and skybar lounge. The first floor, second floor and rooftop will be our main design development for the project.

CONCEPT
PRESENT MOMENT TARGET CLIENTS Business Professionals
Local Residents
The Opening of Eyes, by David Whyte That day I saw beneath dark clouds the passing light over the water and I heard the voice of the world speak out, I knew then, as I had before life is no passing memory of what has been nor the remaining pages in a great book waiting to be read. It is the opening of eyes long closed. It is the vision of far off things seen for the silence they hold. It is the heart after years of secret conversing speaking out loud in the clear air. It is Moses in the desert fallen to his knees before the lit bush. It is the man throwing away his shoes as if to enter heaWven and finding himself astonished, opened at last, fallen in love with solid ground.

Present Moment - M Hotel
Concept Statement Present Moment is living in the moment. It means being here and now 100% of your attention. To let go of the past because it has already happened. To not worry about the future because it has not happened yet. With the practice of connecting to every moment of now, it helps create an intimate connection with oneself, other sentient beings and all. With the six senses that we inherit as humans: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching, and thinking/feeling, this is the perfect opportunity to discover the fascination and awe of every day mundane life to live differently. Having a negative misconception that people think of Oakland, I want to redefine their opinion by actually visiting the place and experiencing for
themselves what Oakland has to offer. I believe that in order to judge and make a conclusion about someone or something, one has to investigate to fully see clearly and if it is true for themselves. My design concept intention in the interior space is for local residents and business professionals to evoke a sense of curiosity and have a felt sense experience: seeing, smelling, tasting, hearing, touching, thinking and feeling in the boutique hotel. The interior space will provide opportunities for interaction, connection with the city that acknowledges the past, enlightened by Oakland’s deep history in United States. It will also provide a change of heart: welcome hospitality of the locals and appreciation of guilty pleasures of southern food. Boutique Hotel

Compass
Concept Statement Compass is a tool where one’s path is being pointed to the “right” direction. “Righting” means to balance our way with the joys and sorrows that life brings upon us: having to let go of the past, accepting what is present given the circumstances and trusting in the future with the support of the community. It tells us where we need to go, what we need to do and say based on ones quiver of the heart. The Refuge Community Center is a place where a refugee may feel safe and secure, a place to rest and learn while they are re-establishing their lives to a new land. Withwthe integration of the compass concept in the design, I feel that it is essential for a refugee to be a part of a community to have support as well as having their own solidarity to contemplate about how one may be able to find happiness where they are right now and to also allow time for the grieving process as they have lost their home from their old country. The compass symbol of circle and triangle shape represents wholeness, completion, unity, direction, path and timeless. The elemental shapes that is in the building gives the essence of “righting” and reminder that the refugees are not alone on their path. The triangle shapes on the floor, ceiling, and wall represent a sense of direction and the circular light fixtures and landscape represent unity. The linear pathway in the community center represents a re-orientation to what is true, real, and points to the “right” direction.

COAST CAFE & BAKERY
The concept Abstract Water for the Coast Cafe and Bakery was developed after meeting with my client’s experience with water throughout her travels and what gave her the feeling of safety, comfort of home, calm and serenity. I wanted to bring the element of water into the interior space. As I have been thinking about water itself, the colors of water changes throughout the day and night from clear blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, dark blue, black, etc. As our perception of water changes in a given day, I wanted to bring the colors of what the water reflects as humans also tend to change moods, so thus water. 60

My selections for the materials are very cool and neutral tone and in the complimentary colors of blue and orange undertone. I have also given into consideration that my client would like to have sustaianble materials as much as possible so that she is able to contribute and support for the environment. My intention for the interior space is to bring community together local residents and visitors to connect and have an intimate yet fun atmosphere within the interior space.

The Dining Area is composed of complementary colors of blue and orange and the ranges of yellow, white, textured sustainable materials to enhance the dining experience within the space. I kept the walls more clean and neutral because of the busy texture of the terazzo flooring and sinewave acoustic tile ceiling. I choose the reclaimed wood planks as tabletops for the emu tables to give the space more warmth. It creates a harmonious balance with the touch of oranged color finished ecovative’s pendant light. The Lutron’s roman shade system proveds a controlled light to come in the space. Since this area will receive more natural sunlight especially sunset, I wanted to keep the interior space: walls clean and light so that when the sunset hits the dining areaw it allows for the natural glow of the sun to be received in the space which will create an orchestrated spectrum of colors depending on the season. 62

The Juice Bar will provide customers a to go service and it will be very busy compared to the dining area. Other than what I have mentioned as materials used in the dining area, I added the Neolith countertop for its lightweight, easy to clean and aesthetically goes well with my concept. To have the antique harvest plank (reclaimed wood) as a table stand adds a dramatic effect within the space. I also carried over the reclaimed wood at the walls for shelvings. I used Ann Sack’s Gem by Kelly Wearstler to create the element waves of water. Since this area will receive the least natural light but will have more steady south orientation sun path, it will be more ideal for the produce: fruits and vegetables being mixed and made for the customers. 64

The first design option for my client was inspired by her experience during her stay in Maui. Her senses came alive when she was by the ocean. She wanted to have the same experience in her bath so I decided to make the tiles into gradient mosaic tiles for the walls, taupe train elephant matte tile for the flooring to mimic the sand, calacatta Daniel marble for the sink countertop. I decided to have a second option of the tiled light glass and a few trimming options. 66

My second option for my client is another experience she went for the first time camping in Wolf Dream Mountain in Ukiah. She felt that being out in nature helps her destress and felt compelled to bring in her bath. I decided to use a green glass tile cloud avocado and juniper tiles for the walls, gem concrete swell ebony for the flooring, and calacatta borghini for the sink countertop. I was considering the maintenance and when it is time for a replacement or change of sealant for the grout. I am aware that the bath will take in a lot of moisture and I wanted to look for the options appropriate for the space. 68
