CONVEYOR: REVITALIZING MINING TOWN WITH ABANDONED CONVEYOR BELT Studio 511 SP 2014 / Academic indivisual work Instructor : Dimitris Gourdoukis SITE Stratoni, Aristotelis, Chalkidiki, Central Macedonia, Greece Washington University in St.Louis Graduate School of Architecture
Revitalizing abandoned mining town is the target that this project aims at. Ruined nature especially soil contamination has been continued near conveyor belt and water runoff. By reutilizing abandoned conveyor belt as a new stream of purification, conveyor belt will transport contaminated soil, purified soil, excavator and 3-D printer. New pavilion will be printed with natural materials such as decontaminated soil and purified by-product of mining activity. Starting with universal strategy, Grasshopper script is written for generating proper parametric mass for growing plant considering water and solar radiation. With previous script, specific topography of Stratoni site and existing abandoned conveyor belt are adapted as a local condition. 3D printed pavilion will be theoretically perfect in terms of location, height and density to grow plant. New pavilion is not only having a role with plantation but it also can be an educational space for visitors.

Specific stratoni site : Stratoni’s annual radiation map generated by DIVA could work as an image mapper. It determines the heights of each bounding box so as to populate vertices in 3-dimension.

Darker area means less solar radiation so height of the box become taller. Brighter area means more solar radiation so height of the box should become lower or even digging into the underground.
Conveyor belt : Path of existing conveyor belt can affect the density of vertices in each bounding box. Accordingly, buildings are mainly generated near the conveyor belt.
Random points and curves : Points or curves generated by a condition of the site can affect the density of vertices in each bounding box.
Water runoff : Simplified water runoff curves are working as an attractor curve. If the distance between curve and vertex in the box is close to each other, the size of the metaball would become larger to appropriate the water to grow plants.
Water runoff : Lines generated from a simulation of water runoff can give a charging value to each vertex. Simplified curves are working as an attractor curve. If the distance between curve and vertex in the box is close to each other, the size of metaball should be small to avoid water flow.

For degree project, I started with social problem homelessness in city of St. Louis. It has been relatively hard to see homeless people on the street compare to a few years ago. It was because of the city’s campaign called ‘Ten-year plan to end chronic homelessness’. This plan drew down a number of homeless people on the street however, total homeless population has not actually decreased even it has been increasing. The city has made more and more emergency shelter for homeless people. That means city could not solve the fundamental problem instead they hide and isolate homeless people from community. Public concern on homelessness has been reduced naturally. To address issues of homelessness, I’m suggesting transitional housing for social integration and ending chronic homelessness. Statics shows that top trigger for homelessness is loss of job. So I researched industry which has low entry barrier for homeless people. That is agriculture and there are plenty of proper reasons why St. Louis is good for urban agriculture. City has lots of empty lots and abandoned buildings with extremely low economic value. St. Louis is also suffering from food desert and has relatively high food insecurity rate compare to national average. For those reasons, I’m suggesting transitional housing with urban agriculture which include indoor and outdoor farm, job training center, mental health clinic, local food market, cooking class, restaurant, food truck terminal, education-

Starting with surrounding condition, wall like cotton belt building block up the river view from the Cass Avenue and has small number of windows because of previous programs. In addition to building itself, A few number of dropdowns, rail road and flood wall interrupt people to reach riverfront. So, I suggested adding huge aperture and put more windows within the structural grid. To minimize the disadvantages of the narrow building and to maximize the advantages of linear building, the building has a few branches which is not only a space but also conveying people and resources. These branches are spreading out from specific point where two axis; Cass avenue, existing building axis, are intersecting each other. This point is going to be a lobby and branches are connecting entire building and sometimes overlapped or diverged depends on its programs. For example, in the restaurant, people can see the cooking class with organic local food, conveyor belt, and hydroponic farm. By doing so, they can understand how foods are grown, processed, conveyed, stored, cooked and even take part in some programs with homeless people. For program arrangement, I tried to figure out what kind of elements and group of people are needed in each program and how each program should be connected. This building is divided into four parts. Private transitional housing, semi-private working area for urban agriculture, semi-public green business office and public community area. Four areas and various programs are sometimes have own space or shared space. This project accelerate social interaction by mixing and overlapping different programs and events which typically do not go together. That will be a social integration and the way of ending social problems.

This is project is aimed at designing marshland research center with an anlysis of regional organism which has evolved into enduring harsh environment. When the water lilies are just coming into leaf, leaves has an inversed conical shape and stems are starting to grow up to the surface of water. When it comes to rainy season, leaves are flattened and floating on the water. At the same time, stems become flexible to put up with fast flow and high level of water.
Normal plants have stoma on back side of the leaves whereas water lily’s stoma is located on the front side because its leaves should be floating on the water. For that reason, leaves do not have cuticle and have bumps to make a drop of water flow. (Water repellent surface) These bumps also help leaves’ surface be clean from dust because each bumps are smaller than a dust so water drop can easily catch that and flow. (Self-cleaning structure).
In the leaves and stem, water lily has developed an aerenchyma which allows it float and transmit air from leaves to roots and nutrition from roots to leaves. Water lily’s stem which does not have cuticles is so flexible that they can survive in high flow velocity of water instead of being broken. Likewise water lily’s aerenchyma, this building has large number of columns which are working for transmitting load, light, wind, water and people.

Berlin Berlin has a number of unique characteristics upon architecture as well as urban fabric. Berlin can be called city of courtyard because of its old perimeter housing block called Mietskaserne which were built during a period of great increases in population between 1860 and 1914, particularly after German unification in 1871, in a broad ring enclosing the old city center. The buildings are almost always 5 stories high because of the mandated maximum height. The blocks are large because the streets were required to be able to handle heavy traffic, and the lots are therefore also large: required to have courtyards large enough for a fire truck to turn around, the buildings have front, rear, and cross buildings enclosing several courtyards. Buildings within the courtyards were the location of much of Berlin’s industry until the 1920s, and noise and other nuisances affected the apartments, only the best of which had windows facing the street. In addition to the characteristics of Mietskaserne, Berlin is also one of the most destroyed city during the Second World War along with London. Reconstructing the city after the war defeat made it has a lot of buildings which has unique façade, housing block and urban fabric with the old and new. NEW NATIONAL GALLERY
This building is an expansion of New national gallery which is one of the modern architectural masterpieces designed by Mies van der Rohe. New national gallery has simple and powerful geometric feature. That is a glass mass with square roof with minimum columns over large square platform. As the expansion of New national gallery, for following Berlin’s architectural heritage, I suggest underground hidden building with four different courtyard under the expanded platform from Mies’ that. By doing so, visitors can not recognize the expansion part, instead they can only see and enjoy expanded platform and wall.

For the museum design, continuity and flow of exhibition is important, at the same time, one continuous exhibition should be divided into a few different circulations for multiple exhibitions. Four courtyards naturally provide ‘8’ shape circulation which is also able to be divided into two separate circulation having one starting point. If vertical circulation of the building is located near starting point of ‘8’ shape, multiple layers circulations can be merged into one continuous exhibition.

To begin with 4 different mass studies which have various height, shape and orientation, Autodesk Formit 360 was used for basic energy usage simulation and solar radiation. This project is aimed to make a performance enhanced garment in collaboration with a student majoring fashion design in order to achieve both beauty and practicality. Project is started with analysis for the requirements of garment; structure, flexibility and insulation. Vein expression is chosen as a main topic of the project. By juxtaposing pipes having different shape of inner layer, each part of a textile has identical pattern upon outside in parallel with having different inner performance by changing a ratio of solid and void. With regard to insulation, bigger size of inner space secure higher thermal resistance. In addition to that, thickness of pipe in between outer and inner layer and fabric in between each pipes can provide different flexibility and elasticity in each vertically and horizontally.

10 STONE CATHOLIC CHURCH 2009 / Professional team work : Jaehong Jeon SITE Nong-am-ri 393-4, Hwaseong-myeon, Cheongyang-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea B&A Architecture
The site of a stone catholic church is located in the vicinity of the Daracgol Julmudeom Holy Land and it is located at the birthplace of St. Choi Gyeong-hwan, a patron saint of the Cheongyang Catholic Church and his son Father Choi Yang-up. The Julmudeom Holy Land in Nong-am-ri, Hwaseong-myeon. Cheongyang-gun is divided mainly into three places with 37 graves of anonymous martyrs lined up. These are graves in which the remains of martyrs that died in places like Hongsung during the Byeongin Persecution were brought by Catholic believers and secretly buried in the dark. The stone Catholic Church was planned on the extension of such geographical characteristics and in conceptual terms planned due to the symbolism of martyrs that gave their lives for their faith. In order to honor these anonymous martyrs that were killed in order to defend their faith during the period of the Catholic persecution during the Chosun Dynasty, also in order to remember the pain of laying a stone on the grave because they could not make graves that were apparent, we are now putting the stones that remember the martyrs since then until now on this ground.
