Destined to become the one indispensable introduction to why we enjoy art – and how we can best experience it Beginning with a fragment of yellow jasper – all that is left of the face of an Egyptian woman who lived 3,500 years ago, more enigmatic even than the Mona Lisa – this book confronts the elusive questions: how, and why, do we look at art? Philippe de Montebello and Martin Gayford talked in art galleries, churches and museums, and their book is structured around their journeys. But whether they were in the Louvre or the Prado, the Palazzo Pitti or the Mauritshuis, they reveal the pleasures of truly looking at works of art – as well as some of the pitfalls. This is neither a work of art history nor of criticism. Nor is it a travel book, though to write it the authors met on two continents and in six countries. Always their destination was some outstanding collection or individual work of art, and the discussion started from what they saw. The result is highly unusual and very personal: a book about what it feels like to experience pictures and sculptures. Both men convey, with subtlety and brilliance, the delights and significance of their subject matter – some of the greatest creations of human beings through our long history. Art 5

Nicholas Thomas An informed and accessible survey of the extraordinary diversity and creativity of global body art, past and present Body art, practised across all world cultures and throughout history, is the most intimate art form, linking the self, the senses, and the social and political. In recent years, it has proliferated in an unprecedented way, borrowing motifs and practices from many different traditions. What is it that these new and borrowed body arts do, and what do they tell us about the global culture that we now inhabit? Nicholas Thomas explores these questions and many more in this wideranging survey of body arts from prehistoric origins to the present. He illuminates their role in expressing cultural identity; their associations with ritual, theatricality, criminality and beauty; and their recent resurgence via the Modern Primitive movement and in the work of contemporary artists. More than 180 illustrations chronicle the diversity of body arts, from painting and scarification to footbinding, Russian prison tattoos, Harlem drag balls and the inked designs worn by celebrities such as Tupac Shakur and David Beckham. For everyone with any interest in the subject, Body Art offers an intelligent celebration of this quintessentially human art form. Art 7

A guided tour of this masterpiece of Italian art and architecture Founded in 1228, the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi is the burial place of the well-known saint and the mother church of the Franciscan order of monks. It is also a treasure house of art, decorated with monumental frescoes by some of the greatest painters of the 13th and 14th centuries. The Upper Church is perhaps most famed for its sequence of frescoes that celebrate the life and teachings of St Francis, attributed to Giotto and his workshop, while Cimabue and his followers were responsible for a series of dramatic scenes from the Bible. The Lower Church, meanwhile, has been expanded through the addition of several magnificent chapels; their titular saints are commemorated with great imagination and immediacy in works by artists including Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti. This book takes its readers on a guided tour of this magnificent complex, aided by a wealth of beautiful photographs. Rarely seen details allow the personal imprints of the artists to shine through, and prove that beyond their diversity of styles, they were all united by a desire to mirror reality while maintaining a sense of the sublime. This unmatched artistic heritage marks a revolutionary era in the flowering of Italian art. Art 11

The Essential Cy Twombly

New York Mid-Century

Edited by Nicola del Roscio Texts by Simon Schama, Laszlo Glozer, Kirk Varnedoe and Thierry Greub

Post-War Capital of Culture, 1945–1965 Annie Cohen-Salal, Paul Goldberger and Robert Gottlieb

An essential overview of Cy Twombly’s complex body of work Cy Twombly created art that was remarkable for its versatility, sensitivity and originality. Throughout his career, he followed his own artistic pathway, independent from contemporary trends, and for a long time his work went unnoticed by a wider audience. By the time of his death in Rome, at the age of 83, he was internationally recognized as one of the greatest and most idiosyncratic artists of the 20th and early 21st century. At an early stage, he began to develop his own symbolic language of letters and words, which suggested a pictorial form of poetry. References from art, history and mythology soon expanded this poetic vocabulary, often combined with a sensual engagement with the painted surface. This book provides an authoritative overview of Twombly’s complex body of work, bringing together the most important of his paintings and painting cycles, as well as a selection of his drawings, sculptures and photographs. Each group of works is introduced and discussed the respected art historians Simon Schama, Laszlo Glozer, Kirk Varnedoe and Thierry Greub.

Annie Cohen-Salal is the author of many bestselling and critically acclaimed art books. Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic and author Paul Goldberger is the former chief architecture critic for the New York Times. Robert Gottlieb, former editor of the New Yorker, is the dance critic for the New York Observer.

An overarching survey of mid-century New York’s invigorating new world of art, architecture and performing arts New York Mid-Century tells the story of how the Big Apple emerged as the cultural capital of the post-war world in all fields of creative endeavour. It was a period of intense cross-fertilization, as poets and critics mixed with artists, dealers, musicians, architects, dancers and choreographers. Annie Cohen-Salal brings alive the influential critics and patrons, the legendary galleries, and the artists themselves, from Pollock, Rothko and de Kooning to Johns, Rauschenberg and Warhol. Paul Goldberger presents the modernist architectural masterpieces that created the city’s sleek new profile, highlighting both public and private spaces, while Robert Gottlieb invites us to relive the heyday of the musical, explore the great jazz clubs of Harlem, and peek into the inventive studios of the dance world. Richly illustrated with hundreds of paintings, drawings, photographs, elevations, plans, posters, playbills and ephemera, New York Mid-Century is a stirring evocation of a remarkably fertile period in the city’s history, whose styles and aesthetics are now very much back in vogue. The first substantial textbook on one of the most exciting areas of art practice today, written by an authority on the subject From its underground genesis during the Cultural Revolution (1966–76), contemporary Chinese art has become a dynamic and hugely influential force in a world where the distinctions between East and West are rapidly collapsing. In this first systematic introduction to the topic, Wu Hung provides an accessible, focused and much-needed narrative of the development of Chinese art across all media since the 1970s. Richly illustrated, it considers its subject chronologically both in the context of China’s specific historical experiences and in a global arena. Wu Hung explores the emergence of avant-garde or contemporary art – as opposed to officially sanctioned art – in the public sphere after the Cultural Revolution; the mobilization by young artists and critics of a nationwide avant-garde movement in the mid-1980s; the re-emphasis on individual creativity in the late 1980s; the catapaulting of Chinese art into the global arena from the 1990s; and the recent identification of Chinese artists, such as Ai Weiwei, as global citizens who create works for an international audience. Conversations with Norman Rosenthal Jeff Koons and Norman Rosenthal

A major monograph available again in a new, compact format Before the publication of this first major monograph on Anselm Kiefer, no one had attempted to analyse in depth the very essence of his art. Daniel Arasse takes as a starting point the 1980 Venice Biennale, a key moment in the artist’s career that marked the birth of both his international reputation and the controversy over the ‘Germanness’ of his work. Across six main chapters, the author delves into the central themes of Kiefer’s art and their evolution: Nordic and Germanic mythologies; Jewish mysticism; the cosmos; the legends of the ancient world; links between heaven and earth, gods and men; transmutation; and the role of the human body. All of these lie at the heart of his rigorous and deeply interesting thought. Interspersed with the main discussion are five sub-chapters that shed new light on the fabric of Kiefer’s work by examining his favorite motifs and the ways they have mutated through time and thematic shifts. By examining his influences, style and recurring motifs, Daniel Arasse illuminates Kiefer’s rich culture and his philosophical and artistic practice, while demonstrating a unity and continuity that transcend any linear concept of his development.

Jeff Koons is one of the most important and controversial artists of our time. Sir Norman Rosenthal is an independent curator and art historian. He was Exhibitions Secretary at the Royal Academy, London, from 1977 to 2008.

A beautifully produced literary art book that links contemporary Irish writing to Ireland’s national collection of art ‘The paintings were windows through which I could see snippets of other people’s past lives, and in doing so recognize something of my own.’ So muses Christine Dwyer Hickey in her response to The Goose Girl by Stanley Royle in a collection of new writing that brings together two celebrated traditions: art and literature. Over fifty-five acclaimed Irish novelists, playwrights and poets have selected pictures from the National Gallery of Ireland as setting-off points to explore ideas and tell stories about art, love, loss, family, dreams, memory, places and privacy. Seamus Heaney finds quiet beauty in a canal path by Gustave Caillebotte; Roddy Doyle gives voice to a man in a crowd painted by Jack B. Yeats; Colm Tóibín considers a portrait redolent with possibilities by John Butler Yeats; John Banville sheds light on Caravaggio’s darkness. Each writer creates and connects vividly with other worlds – observed, remembered and imagined. Perceptive and deeply personal, their responses to pictures invite us to look at art in new lights and from different angles.

Bio Design

Designing Here/Now

Nature • Science • Creativity William Myers Foreword by Paola Antonelli

A global selection of objects, concepts and spaces for the future Edited by Allan Chochinov and Eric Ludlum

New in paperback, the first overview to address the thrilling new developments in the field of biological design Designers and artists have always looked to nature for inspiration and materials, but only recently have they been able to alter and incorporate living organisms in their work. In a world with finite resources and a growing population, design that mimics or appropriates the sustainable template of nature is likely to prove as vital as it is novel. Bio Design examines some seventy projects that cover the fields of architecture, industrial processes, education, fine art, material engineering and bioengineering. Each project is illustrated by a short text, images and captions that combine to explain the problems the venture tackles, and how living materials and processes were harnessed to solve them in sustainable and aesthetically pleasing ways. Many of the solutions also provoke thought about manipulating life for human ends. From bacteria that can spin microfibrils of pure cellulose for use in the clothing industry to pigeons that – fed special bacteria – excrete harmless detergent instead of faeces, biological design is science fiction, here and now.

Allan Chochinov is a founding partner and editor-in-chief of Core77. He is the chair and co-founder of the MFA in Products in Design Program at New York’s School of Visual Arts. Eric Ludlum is a founding partner and editorial director of Core 77.

An inspirational sourcebook of unusual, original and often surprising letterforms for graphic designers today A celebration of the world of letters, The Typographic Universe features more than 300 examples of unusual letterforms, either created from non-traditional materials or found in unexpected places. Virtually anything can be used to make original typography: flora, fauna, foodstuffs – even men’s underwear. What’s more, once you start looking, it is impossible not to see letters everywhere. From deliberate inventions – aromatic alphabets made of spaghetti, soup or spices, or contorted typefaces styled out of human handprints – to serendipitous and often short-lived discoveries – letters formed by chemtrails in the sky, by negative spaces between trees branches and city buildings, or by cracks in plaster – to fading ‘ghost types’ painted on buildings in a pre-digital age, this typographic scavenger hunt will excite and inspire graphic designers, typographers and anyone who shares the current popular fascination with the wonderful world of typography. Innovative Packaging and Graphics Stuart Tolley

A detailed look at the creative and analytical process of visualizing complex data, in works by over seventy designers We have entered the period of Big Data, where huge amounts of information can be gathered and processed with ever greater speeds, where algorithms have become so refined that they can predict behaviour and tell us what we want. Increasingly, designers and illustrators try to understand what all the information we have collected really means and how we can make sense of it to improve our lives. Presenting work by seventy-three of the world’s most innovative information-graphics designers, Raw Data is the first book to get behind the finished image, to reveal how a stack of numbers could be transformed into a beautiful image rich with meaning and explanation. From the political charts of The New York Times to gadget instruction manuals, from creating a narrative out of complex process or spaces to mapping physical fitness, visualizing data is one of the preoccupations of our day. This timely publication will appeal to graphic and interaction designers, as well as information visualizers across all media and subjects.

Each design is accompanied by a brief yet detailed project description, a reference system for the reader to identify the format, materials and finishes used in the design, and full credits for the client, record label, publisher and designer behind the work. The book is peppered throughout by interviews with top designers, including Stefan Sagmeister, Irma Boom and Stanley Donwood, who give their insights into why the materiality and tactility of printed packaging are more important than ever. The first book to evoke the fantasy world of turquerie in all its diversity and richness The arrival of Ottoman embassies and their elaborate retinues at the courts of Europe in the early 18th century sparked a fascination with all things Turkish among royalty and aristocracy that lasted until the French Revolution. Haydn Williams, an expert on the decorative arts, shows how turquerie manifested itself in the arts across Europe. Its most intense and long-lasting expression was in France, but its reach was broad: from a mosque folly in Kew Gardens to the Turkish tents erected along the Elbe to celebrate a royal marriage in Dresden in 1719; from an ivory statuette of a janissary created for King Augustus II of Poland to the costumes worn for a carnival celebration in Rome in 1748. The book is organized into eight broadly chronological chapters, from the fall of Constantinople in 1453, through the flourishing of turquerie in the 18th century, to the 19th century, when other fantasies took hold. Focusing on categories including painting, architecture, interiors and the theatre, Turquerie provides an engaging account of this whimsical European fantasy.

AM – IS THE TEXT LEGIBLE? LOOKS LOST IN THE TREES

A lavish introduction to and celebration of French Art Deco ‘Art Deco’ is epitomized by the French works exhibited at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. The exquisite craftsmanship of the dazzling works on show spoke to a sophisticated modernity, yet were firmly rooted in tradition. Interest in the style has not only endured but has grown steadily, and Art Deco is now more coveted and collected than ever before. This book draws on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s significant French Art Deco holdings to present more than one hundred masterpieces made by forty-five designers. Among the pieces are Süe et Mare’s furniture from the 1925 Exposition; Dufy’s Cubist-inspired textiles; Dunand’s lacquered bedroom suite made for railroad mogul Templeton Crocker; Dupas’s monumental glass wall panels from the ocean liner Normandie; and Fouquet’s spectacular dress ornament in the shape of a Chinese mask. Sumptuous, atmospheric photographs of the objects themselves accompany the text, making this not only one of the first explorations of French Art Deco in English, but a true objet d’art in its own right.

A landmark study of the deepest roots of Islamic calligraphy This remarkable publication is the first comprehensive exploration of the ‘Proportioned Script’, an Arabic writing system attributed to the Abbasid wazir (minister) Ibn Muqla and the master scribe Ibn al-Bawwab that has dominated the art of Arabic and Islamic penmanship from the 10th century to the present day. Volume One, Sources and Principles of the Geometry of Letters, traces the origin of the Proportioned Script to the cross-cultural encounter between Greek learning and the scientific, artistic and philosophical pursuits of classical Islam. On the basis of instructions in surviving sources it identifies a grid module that serves as a common foundation for the design of all the Arabic letter shapes. In Volume Two, From Geometric Pattern to Living Form, the authors construct each of the letter shapes on the grid module and compare their findings to samples traced by two classical master scribes. They conclude by examining the religious, aesthetic and cosmological significance of the Proportioned Script in the wider context of the Islamic cultural heritage. Decorative Arts 39

Beyond Bawa

Architecture: The Whole Story

Modern Masterworks of Monsoon Asia David Robson Photographs by Richard Powers

Edited by Denna Jones Foreword by Richard Rogers & Philip Gumuchdjian

New in paperback, a companion to Thames & Hudson’s successful Bawa monograph presenting the most appealing ‘tropical modern’ work produced over the last decade Geoffrey Bawa (1919–2003) was among Southeast Asia’s most influential architects in the last decades of the 20th century, and the principal force behind what is today known globally as ‘tropical modernism’. Beyond Bawa, now available in paperback, considers his continuing influence through the work of contemporary architects working in the region. The book has two essential sections. The first is a useful overview of Bawa and his contribution to contemporary architecture; the second presents twenty-four contemporary architects, ranging from such wellknown practitioners as Kerry Hill to such local talents as Anjalendran, and their works, which reveal the long-lasting significance of Bawa’s uniquely sensitive approach to building and the landscape. This illuminating introduction to current architectural practice in Southeast Asia is a fitting tribute to the creativity of a very special architect and the talented generations he has inspired.

Denna Jones is an architecture and design writer and consultant. Richard Rogers is internationally renowned for his modernist and functionalist architecture. Philip Gumuchdjian set up Gumuchdjian Architects in 1998. He teaches architecture and urban design at the UCL Bartlett school of architecture.

A collection of innovative contemporary lightweight houses whose design and construction ‘touch the earth lightly’ While architects have always sought to liberate architecture from its solid foundations through the use of new materials and spatial reconfigurations, climate change, new materials and restricted land use have given new impetus to finding lightweight solutions for our homes. ‘Superlight’ houses combine two strands of thinking: that lightweight buildings have less impact on their environments, and that this lightness (visually, materially, ecologically) can lead to more open living and greater communion with their surroundings. Each of the forty-one houses presented here is shown through photographs, plans and lucid explanations. Residences that appear to float, ingenious constructions using local materials, innovative structures, inflatable spaces, high-tech hyper-intelligent houses – superlight takes many forms, in many places. From the urban jungle of Tokyo to rural China and mountainous Chile, Superlight offers new solutions for architects and designers everywhere. Architecture 45

Wilkinson Eyre Architects: Works

How Tomorrow’s Practitioners Will Learn Today Neil Spiller and Nic Clear

Emma Keyte

An anthology of essays by the world’s leading educators on how aspiring architects should be taught and trained The practice of architecture has changed dramatically in light of new digital technologies, material science and new structural possibilities. Images of striking buildings from around the world have become a part of our visual culture. What is less known, but perhaps more important, is how the architects who created these marvellous buildings were educated. This is the first volume to consider comprehensively the role of architectural education in the 21st century. Many top schools are run by leading global practitioners, who, some might argue, have more lasting influence as educators than as architects. The wide range of pedagogical philosophies and practical lessons, set out in specially commissioned essays by thirty-eight of the world’s top architects and educators, creates a fascinating picture of how our ideas and practices of architecture are formed, nurtured and ultimately built. Through both the professional and educational experience of the contributors, we discover many unexpected and unorthodox methods for teaching those who will build our world.

Formerly Head of Communications at Wilkinson Eyre, Emma Keyte now runs her own consultancy, writing and producing creative content for clients in the architectural community and beyond. Jay Merrick is architecture critic for The Independent newspaper.

Introduction by Jay Merrick

A richly illustrated, elegantly designed retrospective of one of the UK’s most innovative design practices working worldwide Wilkinson Eyre Architects is one of the UK’s leading architectural practices, with a large portfolio of both domestic and international projects to its name. The practice has twice won the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize – in 2001 for the MAGNA Science Centre, Rotherham, and in 2002 for the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Divided into four thematic sections – Landscape, Sky, Water and City – this book provides a unique overview of the remarkable breadth and depth of the firm’s interests. Each of the selected projects is explored in illuminating detail, at first through a description of its principal features and then through a series of extended captions, while a diverse selection of photographs, drawings and plans illustrates every aspect of the company’s work, from initial planning to finished design. Featuring an engaging introduction by Jay Merrick, and with an illustrated summary of more than 100 of the firm’s projects dating from 2005 onwards, Wilkinson Eyre Architects: Works is an incisive and timely guide to a true pioneer of the built environment. A substantial monograph on the new addition to one of the world’s greatest museums and the most visited in Russia Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, the Hermitage Museum is one of the largest museums in the world. In early 2000, it was decided that the eastern wing’s General Staff Building (1820–30) should be converted into a museum of 19th and 20th century art, and an international architectural competetition was held. St Petersburg-based Studio 44 won the commission for the elegant manner with which it addressed the project’s complexity, by preserving the integrity of the original design, adapting a ministry building into an exhibition space, incorporating 21st-century museum technologies and connecting to the main buildings and public areas of the city beyond. The centrepiece of the design is a breathtaking enfilade that will enthral visitors to the new space. The scale and dramatic outcome of the building provides a treasure trove of information and inspiration for architects, museum visitors, curators and anyone interested in Russia’s rich cultural heritage, of which this building marks a new chapter.

Magical, raw stones fashioned into daring and unusual pieces by seven contemporary jewelers, and shown here in luxurious full-colour plates This striking book represents the personal odyssey of antique dealer, collector and jewelry lover Mimi Lipton. Over the years, she has amassed a superb collection of uncut precious and semi-precious stones, along with antique pieces of carved amber and jade, all found or bought on her many journeys around the globe. Now, in collaboration with jewelers Ram Rijal, Daniel Azaro, Nan Nan Liu, Ornella Iannuzzi, Disa Allsopp, Helga Mogensen and Syann van Niftrik, these original elements have been transformed into more than eighty beautiful pieces of jewelry, from rings of Madagascan demantoid, Ethiopian opals and Dinka ivory to necklaces of carved Baltic amber, Chinese jade and Colombian emeralds. Photographed by Noelle Hoeppe, the finished pieces are luxuriously showcased in all their glorious originality. Whether inspired by the raw contours of the gemstones or the pieces of antique jewelry that are their starting point, these are works of sculptural, organic drama, as timeless as they are contemporary. Why You Can Go Out Dressed Like That

The Artisans of Fashion Hélène Farnault Foreword by Hubert de Givenchy

Modern Fashion Explained Marnie Fogg

A beautiful and informative tribute to the age-old arts behind some of the most beautiful clothes in the world In this digital age of mass reproduction, nothing distinguishes luxury so clearly as the handmade. Here is a privileged glimpse into the best of the fashion workshops: the world of embroiderers, lacemakers, weavers, textile designers, pleaters, featherworkers, floral decoration makers, leatherworkers, jewelry and accessory designers, fanmakers and perfumers. Featured in this book is the work of some of the finest haute couture craft specialists – experts who have perfected their skills over many years, keeping alive the knowledge and techniques that might otherwise have disappeared for ever. Their unique creative skills are much in demand at the greatest haute couture houses, such as Chanel, Valentino, Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga. Close-up details from the ateliers have all been specially photographed for this volume, allowing readers to follow the progress of work from sketchbook to finished creation on the catwalk.

Marnie Fogg is the bestselling author of, among other books, The Fashion Design Directory and Fashion: The Whole Story, both published by Thames & Hudson.

An engaging and enlightening reappraisal of cutting-edge fashion Why did Paul Poiret design a dress that resembled a lampshade? Did Rudi Gernreich really think that both men and women would wear his topless monokini? And what prompted Jeremy Scott to include a shimmering leopard-print niqab in his womenswear collection? In an informed defence of innovative fashion, Marnie Fogg explains why challenging established codes of dress can be highly creative if also, at times, wildly controversial. Why You Can Go Out Dressed Like That features 100 of the best fashion pioneers, from the cerebral conceptions of Comme des Garçons, to the augmented anatomies of Thierry Mugler and the exaggerated physicality of Thom Browne’s broad-shouldered men. Readers can also discover how the subversive designs of Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood and Walter Van Beirendonck have each redefined ideas of volume and identity. Many original designs elicit the response: ‘You can’t go out dressed like that!’. Marnie Fogg proves decisively that modern fashion is not as outrageous and unwearable as it may seem. Fashion 61

The most ambitious and comprehensive book on women’s vintage fashion ever published Not just another history of fashion, this is a survey of how fashion past continues to inspire fashion present. It presents over 1,000 stand-out examples photographed specially for this book, including many icons of vintage fashion, from Marilyn Monroe’s bra to the Ossie Clark dress made so famous by David Hockney’s painting. Nicky Albrechtsen uses her encyclopaedic expertise to highlight details that will appeal to enthusiasts, whether an exquisite cut of a cocktail dress, the charming nautical pattern of a swimsuit or the delicate embroidery on a blouse. The book’s three sections create a thorough picture of vintage styles. ‘Decades’ explores the shapes and fabrics that define the look of each period, from the chic garçonne styles of the 1920s to the bodyconscious opulence of the 1980s. ‘Elements’ examines the components that add an individual touch to an outfit, while ‘Hallmarks’ looks at some of fashion’s perennial themes, from florals to the little black dress. There are many books on vintage fashion. This, however, is without question the definitive volume on the subject to date. Fashion 63

James Bent

Roxanne Lowit Introduction by Pierre Bergé

The smart, sassy, savvy insider’s guide to what’s happening fashionwise in the streets of Asia What’s the first thing that springs to mind when you think of Asian street fashion? Perhaps it’s Tokyo’s wacky concoctions, a mishmash of styles combined with an ease that belies their complexity. While this vibrant city has undoubtedly had a huge impact on the growth of Asian fashion, there is startling originality to be found across the vast continent. Young Asia appears to be channelling an energy and drive for creative freedom, making bold fashion statements that scream innovation and individuality. Photographer James Bent has spent the past few years travelling around Asia in pursuit of the most unique approaches to fashion. From Bangkok’s seemingly effortless blend of vintage and modern to Seoul’s layered, sleek chic with a daring twist, the diverse results reveal an irresistible quality that unites Asian fashion as a whole: the refusal to conform to a uniform and conservative form of dress. Collectively, Bent’s photographs take us on a vibrant visual journey of Asian fashion at its best, sparking our imaginations, inspiring fresh interpretations of style, and inviting us to view our own wardrobes in a new light.

Roxanne Lowit is a New York-based fashion photographer who started taking pictures in the 1970s. Her photographs have appeared in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle, V Magazine and Glamour, and she has worked on numerous advertising campaigns for, among others, Dior, Barney’s and Vivienne Westwood.

A gallery of dazzling backstage and portrait photography of Yves Saint Laurent The name Yves Saint Laurent is synonymous with style, elegance and high fashion. When he came on the scene at Dior and then started his own line, he quickly changed the way people regarded haute couture and the world of fashion itself. He had a huge impact not only on fashion, but also on many people’s lives, including that of photographer Roxanne Lowit. Yves Saint Laurent is Lowit’s personal photographic history of Saint Laurent, the man and the fashion, from 1978, the year she first met him, to the last show he gave in 2002. With contributions from YSL’s muses and admirers, including Catherine Deneuve, Lucie de la Falaise, Betty Catroux, Jacqueline de Ribes, André Leon Talley and Valerie Steele, this book represents the backstage experience at YSL’s shows as Lowit experienced them. Whether surrounded by beautiful models or peeking at the catwalk from the wings, every moment was a magnificent photo opportunity. Lowit shares with the world magical moments of YSL – intimate, social, absorbed in fashion – and creates a unique portrait of this towering figure of postwar couture. Fashion 71

Thirty-five rising stars who are the future of fashion photography This vibrant book surveys the outstandingly fresh and original fashion images being created by thirty-five emerging photographers from fourteen countries. From Axel Hoedt’s bold graphic experimentation and fascination with traditional costume, and Erik Madigan Heck’s painterly use of colour and natural light, to Daniel Jackson’s exploitation of movement and dynamic shape or Hanna Putz’s cool neutral aesthetic, the photographs brought together under Magdalene Keaney’s curation are diverse, innovative and utterly memorable. Unlike recent books on fashion photography, which inevitably bring together the established ‘names’ whose work already appears widely in international fashion magazines, this book embraces the fashion world’s obsession with freshness and youth: it looks beyond what is ‘now’ and showcases what comes ‘next’. With an introduction that sets out the author’s view on the meaning of contemporary fashion photography and its prevalent visual trends, as well as texts on each of the photographers that profile and critique their careers and work to date, this will be essential reading for anyone in the fashion industry and an inspiration for aspiring photographers. William Helburn Mid-Century Fashion and Advertising Photography William Helburn Text by Robert Lilly and Lois Allen Lilly

Foreword by David E. Scherman

Published in a new compact format to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings Lee Miller’s work for Vogue from 1941–45 sets her apart as a photographer of extraordinary ability. Its full range is shown here, accompanied by her brilliant despatches, which combine immediacy with acute observation, and deep personal involvement with professional detachment. Complementing her words are over one hundred and fifty remarkable photographs from the Lee Miller Archives. They portray the raw edge of combat at the siege of St Malo and the bitterly fought Alsace campaign, and the disbelief and outrage she describes on witnessing the victims of Dachau. The horror is relieved by the spirit of post-liberation Paris, where she indulged in frivolous fashions and recorded memorable conversations with Picasso, Cocteau, Eluard, Aragon and Colette. The book ends with Miller’s first-on-the-scene report giving a sardonic description of Hitler’s abandoned house in Munich. David E. Scherman, the renowned warphotojournalist who shared many of Miller’s assignments, contributes a foreword.

Robert Lilly has produced news programmes, stories and documentaries from Europe, the Middle East and the Americas for companies including NBC, CNN, VH1 and Reuters. Lois Allen Lilly is a reporter, producer, narrator and intellectual property expert.

Lusciously illustrated and produced, here is the work of one of the major image-makers of postwar fashion and advertising William Helburn was the photographer of choice for many of the top advertising agencies in New York in the 1950s and 60s. Shock value and an unrelenting hunger for success helped Helburn to a pioneer’s share in the revolutionary era of advertising, and his work appeared on the pages and covers of major magazines. As well as cars and cosmetics, Helburn shot Coca-Cola, Canada Dry, clothing lines, airlines, jewelry, cigars and cigarettes. He worked with the top models of the day, from Dovima, Dorian Leigh and Jean Patchett to Barbara Mullen, Jean Shrimpton and Lauren Hutton. This volume is the first to survey his photographic work, and gives readers a taste of the vivid reality that the television series Mad Men seeks to evoke. Most of the images have not been seen since they were first published decades ago. In addition to the photographs, Robert Lilly contributes a biographical account of Helburn’s life and work, and former colleagues Jerry Schatzberg, George Lois, Sunny Griffin and Ali McGraw offer insights into William Helburn’s lusty, creative spirit. Available again, a facsimile of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s famous scrapbook Henri Cartier-Bresson was taken prisoner by the Germans in 1940. After two unsuccessful attempts, he managed to escape in 1943. During this time, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, assuming that the photographer had died in the war, started preparing what they thought was a posthumous exhibition of his work. When he reappeared, CartierBresson was delighted to learn of the exhibition, and decided to review his entire work and curate it himself. In 1946 he travelled to New York with about 300 prints in his suitcase, bought a scrapbook, glued each one in, and brought that album to MoMA’s curators. His first exhibition, a celebration of his survival, opened on 4 February 1947. In the 1990s, Cartier-Bresson once again returned to this scrapbook. Following his death in 2004, the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, the present owner of the prints, finished restoring them, making it possible to bring a large body of extraordinary, hitherto unpublished work to the public, images that have finally become a memorial collection after all. Josef Koudelka: Exiles

Uncommon Places: The Complete Works Essay by Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen Conversation with the artist by Lynne Tillman

Revised and expanded edition Czesław Miłosz (1911–2004) was a poet, essayist, translator and novelist. He received numerous honours and prizes, including the Nobel Prize in 1981. Robert Delpire has had a defining hand in the careers of many of the master photographers.

A new, expanded edition of Koudelka’s seminal volume with ten never-before-published images About Exiles, Cornell Capa once wrote, ‘Koudelka’s unsentimental, stark, brooding, intensely human imagery reflects his own spirit, the very essence of an exile who is at home wherever his wandering body finds haven in the night.’ In this newly revised and expanded edition of the 1988 classic, Koudelka’s work once more forms a powerful document of the spiritual and physical state of exile. The sense of private mystery that fills these photographs – mostly taken during Koudelka’s years of wandering through Europe since leaving his native Czechoslovakia in 1968 – speaks of passion and reserve, of his rage to see. Solitary, moving, deeply felt and strangely disturbing, the images in Exiles suggest alienation, disconnection and love. Edited and sequenced by Koudelka and Robert Delpire, Exiles evokes some of the most compelling and troubling themes of the twentieth century, while resonating with equal force in this current moment of profound migrations and transience.

Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen was rector of the Art Academy in Vienna from 2002 to 2011. Since 2012 he has taught curatorial management at Zeppelin University, Friedrichshafen, Germany. A contemporary classic, revised and expanded Originally published in 1982, Stephen Shore’s legendary Uncommon Places has influenced more than a generation of photographers. Shore was among the first artists to take colour beyond the domain of advertising and fashion photography, and his large-format colour work on the American vernacular landscape stands at the root of what has become a vital photographic tradition over the past forty years. Now, for this lushly produced reissue, the artist has added nearly fifteen images and a statement discussing the rediscovery of images never before printed and what it means to expand a classic series. An essay by noted critic and curator Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen and a conversation with Shore by fiction writer Lynne Tillman examine his methodology as they elucidate his roots in the Pop and conceptual art movements of the late sixties and early seventies. The texts are illustrated with reproductions from Shore’s earlier series American Surfaces and Amarillo: Tall in Texas. Photography 81

An international survey of the vibrant, burgeoning field that is contemporary landscape photography Landscape finds itself at the cutting edge of contemporary image making, driven partly by an enduring fascination with the land, and partly by the urgent need to take stock of the extraordinary forces impacting on our environment. For this first global survey of the genre, William A. Ewing has selected work by over 100 photographers, ranging from renowned figures to younger rising stars. Each represents an individual or original viewpoint of a shared concern for our changing environment. Organized into ten themes, Landmark covers the full range of the style, and sometimes goes outside it: from bucolic images picturing the last vestiges of ‘nature’, through disturbing depictions of a sullied Earth, scarred and abused, to surreal and artificial landscapes where nature is channelled, controlled and regulated. Ewing contributes a preface and an introduction as well as introductory texts to each section, and the book also features concise statements by the photographers themselves. The result is a thoughtprovoking meditation on the meaning of landscape in today’s world.

‘William A. Ewing has curated what is surely the defining overview of the contemporary approaches to landscape. With an illuminating text explaining his own waymarks and signposts, and without making any bones about its being a necessarily personal selection, he gives us here a chance to reclaim landscape photography from its fractured state and see it in the round’ Francis Hodgson, The Financial Times Photography 83

A history of our era’s defining medium, told via a tour of the most significant photography shows to have ever taken place This is the first book to study the history of photography via international exhibitions. It describes the most important shows and sets them in the context of their times: London’s Great Exhibition of 1851, the magnificent Vienna International Exhibition of 1891, and Film und Foto in Stuttgart 1929 all feature in this wide-ranging global survey. In the postwar period, The Family of Man toured over sixty countries, and curators began to make formal links between photography and contemporary art. In this century, the photographic aftermath of 9/11 is marked by an interview with Charles Traub, co-founder of Here is New York, which remains possibly the most seen exhibition in history. With contributions by and interviews with Quentin Bajac, Gerry Badger, Paul-Louis Roubert, David Spencer, Francesco Zanot, Michel Frizot, Alessia Tagliaventi and Charles Traub, this book will be required reading for anyone with a serious interest in photography and curating.

A behind-the-scenes exploration of the art of contemporary photography, richly illustrated with rarely seen works-inprogress from forty-three of today’s most original practitioners This book celebrates the new creative processes of the modern photographic era, in which blogs and Instagram streams function alongside analogue albums and contact sheets, and the traditional artist’s sketchbook takes the form of Polaroid studies, smartphone pictures, diaristic projects, found photography and self-published photo-zines. Each photographer introduces several pages of ‘sketchbook’ images that convey his or her working methods and thought processes. These one-off presentations are accompanied by engaging interviews that reveal how the simple act of pressing a shutter can capture and express a fully realized personal vision. Three essays explore subjects at the cutting edge of contemporary practice, including: conceiving and editing projects; technical and artistic experimentation; and print and electronic publishing. Designed to satisfy the most demanding of image junkies, this is a key resource for anyone interested in photography or the creative process.

Fear & Beauty Jean-Marie Ghislain

Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s classic equestrian anthology, now available in a new format ‘Remarkable … there is humour, grace and power here. But what makes these wonderful images above all is a Stubbsian perfection that will knock you out of your saddle’ The Sunday Telegraph No one has captured the affinity between people and horses better than Yann Arthus-Bertrand. His in situ photographs show horses as they really are – lively, high-spirited, mettlesome, animated, prancing, supple, and even ethereal. Here, Arthus-Bertrand portrays these magnificent creatures and their human partners in photographs shot on location and around the globe, from Montana to Russia, central Asia to Argentina, Mongolia to Cameroon, and points in between. They range from purebred Arabians and the Lippizaner, star of the famous Spanish riding school in Vienna, to the American Appaloosa and the sleek, patrician thoroughbred. Each moment captured is a testament to man’s powerful and moving relationship with the horse. Full of tribal costume, local colour and panoramic scenery, and accompanied by text from equine expert Jean-Louis Gouraud, Horses is a book of unparalleled ambition and scope.

Jean-Marie Ghislain is a photographer and founder of the ‘Shark Revolution’ Project.

Presents the most beautiful photographs ever published of sharks in the open sea Sharks engender our most primal emotion: fear. Real danger is something we seldom experience in the modern world, protected by the comforts of civilization. Yet fear is deeply inscribed at the core of our being. Jean-Marie Ghislain overcame his fear of water by learning to swim with sharks. By confronting his emotional responses to these graceful predators, he sought to recover from personal trauma, asking himself: ‘Can beauty cure fear?’ These photographs are among the most beautiful pictures of sharks ever taken. Working entirely with natural light and a focal length as close as possible to that of the human eye, he brings these magnificent creatures closer to us than most could ever dare. The tiniest mark or scar is rendered so clearly that we feel we could reach out and touch them. By sharing his profoundly personal experience with sharks, Jean-Marie Ghislain captures the character and beauty of these exceptional creatures, so often maligned or threatened, and urges us to learn to share our oceans with a new sense of respect and even love. A glorious celebration of the beauty, diversity, importance and sheer wonder of plants, with exquisite illustrations from the collections of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Plants are truly remarkable: even with all our modern technological prowess they still feed, clothe and shelter us, help transport us and can intoxicate and cure us. Helen and William Bynum are expert guides to the rich histories, significance and uses of over eighty key plants, revealing our relationship with them, both utilitarian and aesthetic, and their multiple benefits and cultural associations. Organized thematically, eight sections cover all aspects of our interaction with plants – starting with those crops that were fundamental to the development of cultures and civilizations, and those that enliven our diet beyond the basics, such as saffron and chilli peppers. Other sections look at plants that have helped to create our material world, as well as those that are used medicinally or are revered and adored for symbolic reasons, including the tulip, the rose and the lotus. For anyone interested in the extraordinary diversity of flora around us, this elegantly illustrated and covetable book, published in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, will be an inspiration and a delight.

An extraordinary paper doll’s house created by the imaginative Miss Otis, enhanced by contemporary material evoking her late 19th-century life, as well as press-out dolls and stickers In 1884, Miss Sarah Elizabeth Birdsall Otis – known to all as Birdie – made an extraordinary paper doll’s house in the form of a book. While these were fashionable enough at the time, they were usually drawn and painted: Birdie, however, chose the medium of collage. Her album’s exquisite rooms, paper dolls and tiny accessories are true works of art, full of period charm but also distinctly appealing to a modern sensibility. Eric Boman’s fullcolour photographs capture Birdie’s remarkably vivid fantasy world in all its quirky splendour. Boman also provides an entertaining text giving her life story and the background to the making of the doll’s house, accompanied by turn-of-the-century photographs found in her family albums. With an envelope at the back of the book containing press-out dolls and sticker costumes from the original collection, this book showcases an astonishing example of youthful creativity and is guaranteed to appeal to adults and children alike.

In an era when Britain was known as the workshop of the world, enthusiasm was rife for submitting new and innovative designs that might capture the popular imagination and seal the fortunes of their inventors. Inevitably, all manner of bizarre curiosities were painstakingly recorded alongside the genuinely great inventions of the period. These strange, eccentric and often hilarious designs were beautifully rendered by draftsmen, allowing us a unique perspective on the preoccupations of Victorian society; a ventilating top hat, an anti-garotting collar, a moustache protector, artificial leeches and a ‘Design For a Flying or Aerial Machine Adapted for the Artic [sic] Regions’ are just some of the gems included in this book. Extensively illustrated with original beautifully drawn designs for each registered invention, this book captures a bygone era as giddy with the possibilities of a newly industrialized world as today’s app and software designers are with the digital world. The Crossing of Antarctica Original Photographs from the Epic Journey that Fufilled Shackleton’s Dream George Lowe and Huw Lewis-Jones Introduction by Sir Ranulph Fiennes A remarkable visual and personal testimony of an expedition that rewrote the history books The first ever crossing of Antarctica in 1957/58 by the Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by Vivian ‘Bunny’ Fuchs, was one of the 20th century’s great triumphs of exploration – a powerful expression of technological daring as much as a testament of bloody-minded human willpower. Now, one hundred years after Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated Endurance expedition, this beautifully illustrated volume celebrates the men who succeeded where he had failed. A trove of unpublished images from the Lowe archives are brought together here for the first time, along with others from the Fuchs family collection. Awe-inspiring landscapes, candid portraits and action shots evoke the day-by-day moments as the expedition travelled across snow and ice in a variety of vehicles and on dog sledges, facing enormous challenges and dangers. An array of polar experts and explorers also add their reflections on Antarctica, and the meaning and art of true exploration.

George Lowe was a leading climber on the 1953 British Everest Expedition and official photographer of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Huw Lewis-Jones is a historian of exploration. Set to be as influential as the Orientalism of Edward Said: the first book to explore the role of popular culture in generating and propagating prejudices and stereotypes about China A hundred years ago, a character made his first appearance in the world of literature who was to enter the bloodstream of 20th-century popular culture: the evil genius Dr Fu Manchu, described as ‘the yellow peril incarnate in one man’. Here, Sir Christopher Frayling assembles an astonishing diversity of evidence to show how deeply ingrained Chinaphobia became in the West – so acutely relevant again in the new era of Chinese superpower. Along the way he talks to Edward Said, to the last Governor of Hong Kong, to Sax Rohmer’s widow, to movie stars and a host of others; he journeys through the opium dens of the 19th century with Charles Dickens; takes us to the heart of popular culture in the music hall, pulp literature and the mass-market press; and shows how film amplifies our assumptions, demonstrating throughout how we neglect the history of popular culture at our own peril if we want to understand our deepest desires and fears.

An exhilarating, provocative and hugely ambitious cultural history by one of our most brilliant critics and historians ‘We Are All Americans Now’ proclaimed headlines around the world on the day after 9/11. It was not news: it had been true for several decades. In 1945, profiting from a world war that had bankrupted the other combatants, the United States established a new global order, and – despite French resistance to Coca-Cola and processed cheese, and Russia’s antagonistic economic theory – set about Americanizing all other countries. Idealistic by nature, Americans saw this as a mission of redemption. The new empire’s subjects were eager enough to be converted, though not for moral and spiritual reasons: America proved irresistible because of the gloss and glamour of its self-presentation, and the cornucopia of consumer goods it bestowed on the markets to which it had access. America did indeed save the world, though isolationists in Washington wondered whether the expensive rescue effort was worthwhile. And despite the first flush of enthusiasm for the liberating GIs with their gifts of chocolate bars and nylon stockings, a wrenching disillusionment followed in the 1960s during the Vietnam War. Three decades later, 9/11 gave a sudden and traumatic warning that the American century might be coming to an abrupt, premature end. Looking back over the era since 1945, Peter Conrad tracks America’s rise to become ‘master of the earth’, and measures what we have gained and lost by Americanization. Inevitably he deals with resistance to this domination – even by Americans, some of whom deplored the ‘elephantine agony’ of their distended republic and remembered the fate of Rome. But as an admirer of the country’s people, landscape and culture, Conrad ends by saying ‘Thanks, America’. The context for this grand tale is, inevitably, politics, war and commerce, but for the most part Conrad delights us with a kaleidoscopic presentation of America’s unstoppable creativity: its output of great, good and enjoyably bad art, of jeans and jazz, fast food and fridges, comic books and motorbikes, technologies and therapies, along with the heroic, erotic or terrifyingly violent cinematic scenarios that have Americanized even our dreams. From Mesopotamia to the Americas, from China to Africa – an illuminating and evocatively illustrated tour of forty of the greatest cities of the ancient civilizations The impressive cities of the ancient world built the foundations for modern urban life today, witnessing the birth of architecture, of literature and drama, of painting and sculpture. But when did humans first come together in this way and what were these places like to live in? From the world’s first cities, in Mesopotamia, to the spectacular urban monuments of the Maya in Central America, the cities described here represent almost three millennia of human history and development. Under John Julius Norwich’s expert editorship, eminent historians and archaeologists with first-hand knowledge and deep appreciation of each site give voices to these silent ruins, bringing them to life as the teeming, state-of-the-art metropolises they once were. Evocatively illustrated with spectacular photographs of the places as they are now, as well as the fabulous objects and works of art that once adorned them, this book provides a fascinating exploration of cities that shaped the ancient world – just as that ancient world has shaped our own.

City by city, discover the rich sophistication of urban life under the pharaohs Ancient Egyptian cities and towns have until recently been one of the least-studied and least-published aspects of this great ancient civilization. Now new research and excavation are transforming our knowledge. This is the first book to bring these latest discoveries to a wide general and scholarly audience, and to provide a comprehensive overview of what we know about ancient settlement during the dynastic period. Divided in two halves, it opens with an account of the development of urban settlement in Egypt, describing the pattern of urban life, from food production, government, crime and health to schooling, leisure, ancient tourism, and the interaction of the living community with the dead. The second half of the book takes the reader on a trip down the Nile from Aswan to the Delta, giving a comprehensive account of all cities and towns with details for each of their discovery, excavation and important finds, supported by maps and plans as well as recent photographs. The Complete Cities of Ancient Egypt is sure to appeal to all those concerned with urban design and history, as well as tourists, students and Egyptophiles.

The first book to tell the Greek story through the lives of the men and women who shaped its politics and literature, its science and philosophy, its art and sport ‘A few great men operating in isolation – too often this is the way ancient Greece is described to us. Stuttard puts the very greatest into their historical, political and cultural contexts and coaxes some of the lesser known centre stage’ Bettany Hughes, author of The Hemlock Cup and Helen of Troy The political leaders, writers, artists and philosophers of ancient Greece turned a small group of city states into a pan-Mediterranean civilization, whose legacy can be found everywhere today. But who were these people, what do we know of their lives and how did they interact with one another? In this original new approach to telling the Greek story, David Stuttard weaves together the lives of fifty movers and shakers of the Greek world into a continuous, chronologically organized narrative, from the early tyrant rulers Peisistratus and Polycrates, through the stirrings of democracy under Cleisthenes to the rise of Macedon under Philip II and Alexander the Great and the eventual decline of the Greek world as Rome rose. The Great Archaeologists Edited by Brian Fagan A gripping account of 200 years of archaeological research, excavation and thought, told through the life stories of seventy of the world’s greatest pioneers and practitioners Brian Fagan has assembled a team of some of the world’s greatest living archaeologists to write knowledgeably and entertainingly about their distinguished predecessors in this handsome volume, full of fascinating anecdotes, personal accounts and unexpected insights. Little-known pioneers such as Max Uhle in Peru and Li Chi in China are set beside the giants in the field – from Lepsius, Mariette and Carter in Egypt, and Koldewey, Dörpfeld and Woolley in the Near East, to Stephens and Catherwood, discoverers of the Maya of Mexico, and Louis and Mary Leakey, who transformed knowledge of our African ancestry. Imaginatively chosen illustrations range from photographs of the archaeologists and their sites, original drawings and field notebooks, to images of the famous objects that were unearthed. Divided into six thematic sections, this is a compelling journey through the lives of those intrepid excavators and decipherers who opened up vast vistas of time and revealed buried cities, lost civilizations and forgotten scripts to the modern world. Brian Fagan is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has written or edited for Thames & Hudson such volumes as The First North Americans, Discovery!, The Complete Ice Age and The Seventy Great Mysteries of the Ancient World. 201 illustrations, 188 in colour 24.6 x 18.6cm 304pp ISBN 978 0 500 051818 September

A covetable and beautifully produced exploration of the medieval world, conveyed through intimate biographies This engrossing and often witty account tells the life stories of some seventy individuals who made the Middle Ages. There are kings and queens, popes and politicians, soldiers and merchants, scholars, authors and visionaries. They range from the important, such as El Cid or Frederick Barbarossa, to the little known, such as the dissolute Venetian nun Clara Sanuto. Some were astonishingly successful: the empire created by Chinggis Khan was one of the most extensive ever seen. Some, such as Charles the Bold, the over-ambitious duke of Burgundy, were failures. Contrary to modern myth, medieval people did not believe the earth was flat; torture was far less common than in later centuries; and technological advances included guns, printing, spectacles, stirrups and the compass. Full of insights such as these, this book shows how medieval people lived in an era that was more one of invention and innovation than of superstition and backwardness. It will appeal to all those who want a truer picture of a world often erroneously portrayed by novelists of today. Footer R 121

A Card Game + Book – Collect Paintings to Win Susie Hodge A fun-to-play book and card game that puts children in the unique position of exhibition curator

⇨ a rt ⇨ Sh my big

This set of cards and its accompanying book form a lively art-exhibition game for children aged eight and over. Each card reproduces one of fifty major works of art by Michelangelo, Velázquez, Degas, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Dalí, Warhol and others. As well as key information, such as artist and date, the cards also use symbols and colours to indicate which Movement and Theme the work represents. There are twelve Movements – Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, PostImpressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism and Pop Art – and six Themes – People, Places, Objects, Animals, Story and Religion. The main card game resembles Rummy, and the aim is to be the first to ‘put on a show’ (i.e. collect three and four of a kind). The book supports the game by providing further information on the artworks and artists, answers to questions on the cards and alternative games to play.

Susie Hodge has written over seventy books, many about art for children. She is the author of Thames & Hudson’s well-received book on contemporary art, Why Your Five Year Old Could Not Have Done That.

A step-by-step fashion drawing book for young beginners that focuses on finding inspiration in vintage styles Based on successful fashion-drawing workshops at the Fashion and Textile Museum, How to draw vintage fashion encourages young people to draw inspiration from the looks of the past to create their own unique designs. Leading designers open the book by explaining how they go about finding vintage inspiration for the design process, giving examples from their sketchbooks, while people from the fashion world discuss why vintage fashion is now so on-trend. There are sections that show how to draw a fashion template (croquis), including guidance on body proportions and how to turn a stick figure into a full figure. The book then demonstrates how to draw various fashion looks, including those from key decades such as the 1960s and 1970s. Iconic fashion pieces are showcased throughout. Feature boxes look at the detail of accessories, including jewelry, bags, belts and shoes, and the book closes with a helpful look at the design process, from creating a mood board and following a brief to developing a vintage collection.

An ingeniously constructed drawing book that allows children to create a range of funny faces Funny face! is an activity book in which things aren’t quite what they seem. Inspired by the idea of visual puns, the book allows children to draw, shade and fold to make surprising and funny things happen to pictures of all kind of faces. Doodle through a die cut, and shaggy eyebrows on one picture turn into a droopy moustache on the picture beneath. Open a gatefold to make a little boy’s tiny ears become gigantic. Draw pictures on split pages to create faces with different hats, noses and beards. Turn the pages back and forth to find all the tricks and make all the funny faces. Children will be delighted and surprised when, by creating one funny face, they unexpectedly make another on a different page. Enhanced by Hannah Warren’s entertaining range of cheeky, naughty, smiling and jolly faces, presented with rich colours and a sturdy format, Funny face! will offer many hours of joy for energetic and creative children.

An unconventional and idiosyncratic art pad – an ideal gift purchase for children of three and over Make art with your hands and feet! is an art pad with a difference. The reader is encouraged to draw around his or her fingers, thumbs, hands, toes or feet to complete the thirty-two pictures. Hand- and finger-prints can be made with paint, too. Once the images are complete the pages can be personalized with the child’s name and/or messages for family and friends, and torn out to be given as gifts, or simply stuck on the wall. Some pages have a space for the reader’s age to be inserted, giving them a unique and personal record. The reader is called on to complete the zany images, from reindeer with hand-print antlers to foot-print ghosts, and from jelly-fish thumbs to finger space rockets. There are whole families of toes too. Each picture has an icon to show the child what to do, whether to draw around or print with their hands, fingers, thumbs, toes or feet. With plenty of opportunities to experiment and personalize, the unique pictures will reflect each child’s own creative energy.
