his series offers a complete, up-to-date survey of the artistic culture of the twentieth century through an original, transversal and interdisciplinary analysis. his is the first comprehensive overview of the extraordinary development of British painting during the eighteenth century, which anticipated themes, styles and techniques that later became paradigms of modernity. This volume focuses on the English context at a time when the growth of artistic standing was accompanied by the country’s conquest of hegemony on a historical, political and economic plane. The volume is arranged chronologically in seven sections, which include a selection of over 100 masterpieces by the most significant English painters. The main objective is to enable readers to rediscover the genres of portrait and landscape, which have always characterized English art. Readers can admire the work of artists like William Hogarth, Henry Fuseli (Johann Heinrich Füssli), Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, Joseph Wright of Derby, George Stubbs, John Constable and William Turner, who offer a completely original cross-section of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century painting in Great Britain.

• The golden age of English painting reflected the new middle-class: “English” in habits, disposition and temperament, as well as by birth. • While London developed into a metropolis, British artists realized icons of modernity. Valter Curzi, art historian and writer, lectures on Modern Art History at Rome University “La Sapienza”. Carolina Brooks, art historian specializing in painting and culture between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, is a lecturer at Pisa University. 10

The Russian Avant-garde Siberia and the East edited by John E. Bowlt, Nicoletta Misler, Evgenija Petrova

he rituals of Siberian shamans, the ancient funerary sculptures from the steppes seen as a crystallized presence of archaic and everlasting forms of worship, Chinese popular prints, Japanese engravings, Theosophic and Anthroposophic theories, and Indian philosophy are but some of the elements that inspired the aesthetic and theoretical pursuits of the generation of Russian artists and writers just before the October 1917 Revolution. This book examines figures such as Leon Bakst, Alexandre Benois, Pavel Filonov, Natalia Goncharova, Wassily Kandinsky, Mikhail Larionov and Kazimir Malevich, who were deeply aware of the significance of the East for their art, and contributed to launching a rich debate that left a deep and permanent mark on their artistic praxis.

hat links exist between sounds and abstract images? What were the first audiovisual instruments? What was the influence of music on Kandinsky’s work? What are the most relevant audiovisual installations? What are the relationships between VJs and live cinema? And, what is synesthesia? Visual Music Masters answers these and many other questions concerning the relationship between art and music, spanning from Toulouse-Lautrec to Nam June Paik, from Händel to Xenakis, and from Wilfred to Kurokawa. It is an in-depth study focused on both historical experience and contemporary research, illustrated by 150 colour images. The association between images and music aroused the curiosity of a number of artists and thinkers of the past, it stimulated artistic creativity in the twentieth century and continues to be a topic of great interest today. This book aims to take stock of the situation, now that abstract audiovisual art, having reached maturity, is enjoying a new season of renewed vitality.

• Visual Music Masters depicts in a clear and effective language the stages and the protagonists of the technologic and multisensory revolution in art which gave form to a new and independent expressive form: visual music. Adriano Abbado began to work with digital images and sounds back in 1981. In 1986 he received a Fulbright scholarship to study at the MIT Media Laboratory. His most recent works have been shown in Barcelona, Copenhagen, Milan, New York, Paris, Rome, Shanghai, Strasbourg and Washington, DC. 15

hrough a selection of thirty works created in a twenty-year time span (1972–92), including some unpublished and never before exhibited canvases from Italian private collections, this volume offers a perspective on the expressive outcomes that marked Alberto Burri’s practice after the 1950s and 1960s, at a time in which he had already gained international critical acclaim. Cellotex, which the artist had long used as a support for his compositions, became the “work” itself. Through a gradual process of stripping down, Burri reached the basic underlying element, i.e. the material that had previously been approached in view of something else. As is the case with his more iconic cycles (such as Sacchi, Legni and Combustioni plastiche), matter here continues to be the undisputed protagonist, capable of setting the rules and fixing compositional balances.

• The book includes: an introduction by Maurizio Calvesi, an essay and an analysis of the works by Bruno Corà, an inquiry by Rita Olivieri into the critical response to the Cellotex works, an essay by Vittorio Rubiu, a detailed biography of the artist edited by Aldo Iori, a reconstruction of the relationship between Burri and the Venice Biennale carried out by Laura Lorenzoni and a dialogue between Manuela De Leonardis and Aurelio Amendola, the photographer with whom Burri had a long friendship. • A specific section (edited by Elena Dalla Costa) reconstructs the contents of exhibitions by Burri between 1977 and 2007 in which the Cellotex pieces were the only works on show. Bruno Corà, a renowned Italian art critic, is a member of the Burri Foundation. 16

obert Mapplethorpe’s wide, provocative and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. The American photographer is mostly known for images that simultaneously challenge and adhere to classical aesthetic standards: stylised compositions of male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes and studio portraits of artists and celebrities, to list a few of his preferred genres. Since 1977 Germano Celant has come in contact with Robert Mapplethorpe, realising interviews and writing essays on the occasion of several publications and exhibitions. For the first time, this volume gathers the complete anthology of Celant’s writings on the artist: from the 1983 exhibition at Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, projected with the collaboration of the artist himself, to the posthumous writings published in the catalogues prepared on the occasion of the exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, New York and the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg since 1990. This book, through over 140 images and texts that appear both personal and scientific, aims to pay tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe’s contribution to the history of photography.

photographer of the so-called Düsseldorf School, Axel Hütte trained under Bernd Becher with Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Candida Hofer and Andreas Gursky. This volume presents two series of photographs. The first illustrates the author’s journey from Germany to Italy, a sort of retracing of the nineteenth-century Grand Tour : from Alpine passes surrounded by snowy summits to Apennine peaks. The second explores Venice and the interiors of some of its best-known palazzi through colour and black-and-white photographs, offering an austere and intimate picture of the lagoon city.

• The most recent works of one of the great masters of contemporary photography, protagonist of the Düsseldorf School. • The two series combine to bring about a cultured and refined celebration of architecture, be it in the midst of nature or in the city; they share the silence and the distant echoes of the history of men and events. Filippo Maggia is currently researcher at the Photography Department of the Royal College of Art, London. Since 2010, he has taught Photographic documentation at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Catania (Sicily).

s populations grow, where and how we live is a major concern. Very often architects address the issue of housing, and converting spaces is normally a more satisfactory solution than building from scratch. This volume examines re-purposed sites, reclaimed quarries, former landfills, unused spaces that have been recognized in the last twenty years as potential venues for the development of new social, economic and environmental assets. A selection of “recycled” projects from various parts of the world provides a map of the state of the art internationally, describing what has been achieved to date and opening a window onto possible scenarios for the future. In addition to the many images and references, a brief study illustrates the project methodologies in order to provide fundamental guidelines for planning and design.

• The book provides a ‘map’ of the state of the art internationally and describes what has been achieved to date, opening a window onto possible scenarios for the future. • Sites, projects, spaces that differ in style and taste. Each incorporates recycled materials and principles of water efficiency. • A valuable resource for homeowners, landscape designers, contractors and architects. Michela De Poli is an architect and a curator. Guido Incerti is an architect and an author. Among his books: Diller & Scofidio + Renfro, Skira (2007).

apoleone Martinuzzi, an artist held in high esteem by poet Gabriele d’Annunzio, became a partner of Paolo Venini in 1925. In his capacity as the artistic director of V.S.M. Venini & C. he designed magnificent objects until 1931. This book reviews his entire production as a glass designer, consisting of about 600 pieces identified after lengthy and thorough research. Unpublished records found in the Archivio Storico Venini have allowed researchers to appreciate the full extent of Martinuzzi’s contribution to the factory’s production and to identify many of his designs, some of which were previously unknown. After devising elegant clear blown glass objects, the artist went on to explore previously unseen matter like bubble glass and opaque glass in intense and solid colours; he designed a wide repertoire of vases, cups, lights and peculiar decorative objects like fruits, coloured glass creatures and succulent plants, some of which were monumental in size. The book contains a wide range of period photographs, signed designs and factory drawings.

ollowing on from the success of the book Portraits, featuring celebrity portraits from over of a 20 year period including Daniel Radcliffe, Sting, Bruce Willis and Kylie Minogue, Uli Weber has now turned his lens to capturing the magic of the Goodwood Revival festival. Goodwood Revival is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing; a rare opportunity to celebrate the halcyon days of motor racing as it used to be, with all of the spectacle and elegance of the era. Held over 3 days at Goodwood, the estate of Lord March, competitors and spectators alike dress in period fashions, with the finest sights and entertainment of the pre-1966 era for all to enjoy. Every year Goodwood stages a highly competitive race meeting for the kind of cars and motorcycles that would have been at this historic circuit during 1948-1966, offering visitors the opportunity to leave the “modern world” behind and see motor sport luminaries including Sir Stirling Moss, Nick Mason, John Surtees, Jean Alesi and Sir Jackie Stewart racing.

• With a passion for speed and an eye for vintage fashion, this volume will be treasured by lovers of photography, car enthusiasts, fashion addicts, and nostalgics. • The internationally acclaimed photographer Uli Weber has realised a unique portrait of this event, the people and of the circuit that echoes to the spine-tingling bark of golden-age Grand Prix cars from the 30s to the 60s, thundering sports and GT cars, as well as historic saloon cars and little-seen Formula Juniors. Uli Weber is one of the most accomplished artists of his generation. His works have been included in group shows at the V&A and at the Saatchi Gallery in London. 32

he Dwan Gallery opened in Los Angeles in 1959 and showed works by artists such as Arman, Yves Klein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, becoming a West Coast point of reference for international art. In 1965, Virginia Dwan also opened a gallery in New York where she exhibited pieces by the protagonists of Minimal and Conceptual Art. his catalogue raisonné provides new possibilities for analysis and comparison within Chen Zhen’s entire oeuvre. Since 2008, a research team has undertaken a meticulous and systematic study of the artist’s archives in collaboration with collectors, galleries, museums, public and private institutions, exhibition curators, and his friends. Chen Zhen’s catalogue raisonné is the exhaustive inventory of the authenticated work of the artist, catalogued chronologically in two volumes: the first covers the years 1978–96, the second 1997–present. Isabelle Renard and Xu Min’s brilliant essay, guiding us through Chen Zhen’s work, is one of the major contributions to this catalogue: it places the artworks in their historic context and highlights the key periods in his creative development. Chen Zhen was a privileged witness of economic and cultural globalization, and particularly of the gulf dividing China and the Western world. A stranger under his own regime at home and a foreigner in France, where he moved in 1986, Chen Zhen was on the margins of two systems, looking for his own way through them. Chen Zhen’s works question the world, question humanity and its relations with the environment in order to establish a trans-cultural discourse and mode of thought.

• A complete overview on the artist’s work, from 1977 to the present day. • Leading thread of the catalogue is a text written by Isabelle Renard and Xu Min. ADAC – Association Des Amis de Chen Zhen was created in 2003 to promote Chen Zhen’s artistic heritage. 37

n The Lost Thing the house becomes a metaphor in which the various rooms are images of mental states, memories and displacements. The catalogue accompanying the exhibition is structured as a labyrinthine wandering from room to room showing an experimental exploration of installation art’s ability to articulate existential issues through a poetic architectural adaptation. Hanne Tyrmi (1954) is a Norwegian artist who has been active in the art scene since the 1980s. A strong sense of adventure can be felt in her works, something she learnt from her travels around the world, without fear and with an open mind. She lived and worked in Brazil, South Africa and India for years; more recently she moved her studio from Oslo to Xiamen in order to work in Chinese workshops.

The work of Lebanese-American visual artist, poet, playwright and essayist Etel Adnan

S

imilar to nature and consisting of many dimensions, the artistic and literary oeuvre of Etel Adnan contains many different facets. Through the exploration of this artist’s multidimensionality, the book highlights the diversity in her own work. Providing an extensive overview, it includes Adnan’s paintings, drawings, leporellos, tapestries, writings and films from the 1960s onwards. While Adnan views painting as expressing joie de vivre, writing is the artist’s meditation on the tragic side of the world. One important subject that is addressed in her writings is the Lebanese Civil War that lasted from 1975 to 1990. In All Her Dimensions provides a deeper understanding of Etel Adnan’s significant oeuvre, while also giving the opportunity to explore the various developments in her work.

ahd Burki is known for his works on paper employing acrylic, charcoal, marker pen and collage, and numerous screen prints. These works frequently feature abstract graphic fields that contain a central form dominating the picture plane. The sources for these forms range from tribal folk art to science fiction. Painstakingly produced by hand, Fahd Burki’s imagery offers a series of playful and at times menacing icons and symbols harvested from a very personal mythology of the present, at once disconcertingly familiar and completely novel.

sort of catalogue raisonné, this volume gathers around 350 reproductions of installations that through different techniques – drawing, painting, print and sculpture – involve the surrounding environment, creating unexpected relations between imagination and sensitivity. Marco Bagnoli’s research is characterised by two different approaches: his work is rooted in the scientific tradition of Italian Reinassance and, at the same time, is influenced by mystic poetry and Sufi philosophy. His artistic career began in the 1970s and reflects the dispute between Conceptual Art and Neo-expressionism that shaped the period, combining these two opposing tendencies.

• The book includes a widespread chronology and a selection of the artist’s statements; it is richly illustrated by nearly 500 images that, in addition to documenting Bagnoli’s creative journey, bear witness to the historical period in which it unfolded.

Karen Knorr India Song edited by Rosa Maria Falvo texts by William Dalrymple and Christopher Pinney and an interview with the artist by Rosa Maria Falvo

The extraordinary work of acclaimed photographer Karen Knorr and her poetic journey through the Indian subcontinent

O

ver an established career, Karen Knorr’s work has developed a critical and playful dialogue with documentary photography through the use of different visual and textual strategies. Her aim is to explore everyday subjects such as family, lifestyle, culture and animal life to subsequently stage them in very unusual contexts. She investigates issues of connoisseurship, heritage, and art through staged events in architectural interiors. Karen Knorr began the India Song series in 2008, after a life-changing trip through Rajasthan. These latest images, which draw inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals in literature and art, create scenarios that are at once otherworldly and surreal.

• These exquisite photographs challenge our notions of beauty and cultural heritage. • Karen Knorr’s imagery features two formal constants: the insertion by digital means of animals in architectural interiors and their significant pose. Each finished image is both a mystery and a fable, referencing the vast tradition of picturing animals in art along with the Western appreciation and appropriation of Eastern culture and forms. William Dalrymple is an award-winning British writer, historian and curator, as well as a prominent broadcaster and critic. He is one of the founders and a co-director of the Zee Jaipur Literary Festival in India. Christopher Pinney, an anthropologist and art historian, is currently professor of anthropology and visual culture at University College London. Rosa Maria Falvo is a writer and curator, specialising in Asian contemporary art and photography, and Skira’s international commissions editor. 41

edouins, who refer to themselves simply as Arabs (originally, “Arab” was synonymous with “Bedouin”), are nomads who live in the desert, mainly on the Arabian Peninsula, raising sheep, camels, and goats. Unencumbered by excessive possessions, and without most amenities, including electricity or running water, they pursue their lives in peace, practicing an ethic of mutual assistance, devotion to family, respect for the elderly, and self-discipline. The cultures of the Arab world and the desert environment have long captured Megumi Yoshitake’s imagination. But it is the ancient culture of the Bedouins that attracted the photographer’s deepest interest. Over the past seventeen years that interest has become a passion, as she has devoted her life to photographing Bedouin families in Syria: this volume tells their stories through pictures.

• More than 200 photographs unveil every aspect of everyday Bedouins’ life.

Bernard Khoury The Wrong Approach

The Wrong Approach investigates the various events and personalities that shaped the context within which architect Bernard Khoury had to operate; particularly that of Beirut, as it emerged from the early post-war 1990s up to its present state of uncontrolled dissonance. In keeping with the architect’s approach, the book is brimming with contradictions and does not seek to portray his work in light of consensual definitions of context and territory; rather than an attempt to theorise the architect’s motivations and objectives, it reads like a sort of counter-manifesto.

Relics. Damien Hirst edited by Francesco Bonami essays by Francesco Bonami, Abdellah Karroum, Michael Craig-Martin, and an interview by Nicholas Serota

Specifications size 101/3 x 113/4 in. (26 x 31 cm) 306 pages 162 colour illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2074-1 E -2075-8 AR £ 48.00, $ 75.00, Can. $ 75.00

The catalogue of the first solo exhibition in the Middle East of celebrated British artist Damien Hirst, featuring the largest collection of his work ever assembled

D

amien Hirst, who emerged from the Young British Artists (YBA) movement that originated in London in the late 1980s, is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists internationally. His work has had a profound impact in recent art history through a wide-ranging practice including installation, painting, sculpture and drawing, which challenges the boundaries between art, science and popular culture. Relics spans over twentyfive years of Damien Hirst’s artistic career and includes both iconic and previously unseen works. Published to accompany the exhibition, this book surveys the impressive accomplishments of Damien Hirst and contributes to our understanding and appreciation of one of the most significant artists of our time.

• The catalogue gathers over one hundred works, combining historic oeuvres with more recent projects: from The Kingdom to The history of pain, from Pharmacy to For the Love of God, to the spot, spin and butterfly paintings. • This richly illustrated book offers a different perspective on the work of one of the best-known artists working today. Francesco Bonami is an Italian art curator and writer who directed the Venice Biennale in 2003 and curated the Whitney Biennial in 2010. He is currently the Artistic Director of Fondazione Sandretto ReRebaudengo in Turin. Sir Nicholas Serota has been Director of Tate since 1988. Abdellah Karroum is a Moroccan art critic and art director of L’appartement 22, an independent, collaborative artistic project based in Rabat. Michael Craig-Martin, one of the key figures in the first generation of British conceptual artists. 50

Germano Celant

Sculptures, paintings and other art objects by one of the most original Young British Artists in an unparalleled exhibition catalogue

T

his catalogue gathers a number of works by the renowned British artist. “A journey from the origins of life” that, according to the artist, through very powerful works celebrates “the awe and wonder of the world in which we live.” Marc Quinn began his career exploring issues such as the relation between art and science, the human body and its survival mechanisms, life and its preservation, beauty and death. Through an essay-interview of the artist with Germano Celant, the volume offers in-depth insight into Quinn’s conceptual practice that incorporates sculpture, painting and installations. The artist’s preoccupation with the metamorphic ability of both human life and nature points to his fascination with our innate spirituality. Quinn questions the codes of nature through his adoption of uncompromising materials such as ice, blood, marble, glass, and lead. Through the use of such materials, his works are at once poetic and confrontational through their exploration of life, death, sexuality, and religion.

Jan Fabre. Stigmata Actions & Performances 1976-2013 Germano Celant

Jan Fabre’s multi-faceted oeuvre, in a richly-illustrated volume including all his work from the start of his career to the present

V

isual artist, choreographer, writer and director, Jan Fabre has been one of the most influential figures on the European scene for over twenty years. His provocative forays into all different art forms are aimed at breaking down the artistic and moral barriers of his times. This monograph brings together, for the first time, the action art and performances, both public and private, held by the artist in Belgium and abroad from the 1970s to the present. The extreme, even brazen exploration of the human body, which frequently scandalizes viewers, is linked to the idea of metamorphosis, which Fabre may have derived from that passion for the sciences he inherited from his great-grandfather, the esteemed entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre. Jan Fabre has devoted much of his career to studying the human body and its transfiguration, central themes in his work, considering performance art a “per-fora(c)tion” of the body with respect to the outer world: a way to explore its limits, actions and reactions, both inside and out.

A beautifully illustrated catalogue on the most comprehensive and ambitious full-scale retrospective of Munch’s artistic oeuvre ever Specifications size 93/4 x 11 in. (25 x 28 cm) 420 pages 355 colour illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-1775-8 Norwegian edition ISBN 978-88-572-1776-5 £ 42.00 not available in US/Canada/LA

P

ublished on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edvard Munch (1863–1944) in 2013, this catalogue encompasses the entire development of this master’s art from the 1880s to his death; the primary focus will be on Munch’s paintings, prints, drawings and photographs. His oeuvre is covered in an overarching perspective: Self-presentation and selfportraiture; Places and perception; Visual rhetoric; The Frieze of Life as a lifelong project; Munch and public life; Narration and abstraction; Figure and representation; The staging of gender; and The construction of Munch after 1944. The catalogue also reflects Munch scholarship that in recent decades has been revitalising his importance and provides nearly complete reconstructions of The Frieze of Life of 1902 and The Reinhardt Frieze from 1906–07. The book offers an exclusive opportunity to experience new aspects of Munch’s groundbreaking contribution to modernist painting.

orn in Oslo in 1934, Frans Widerberg is widely acknowledged as one of the most distinguished figurative painters in Norway after Edvard Munch. Michael Tucker and Holger Kofoed, both expert authorities, place Widerberg in context with international developments and explore the evolution of this extraordinarily multi-disciplined artist, who is equally distinguished for his printmaking, ceramics, monumental stained-glass commissions and more recently sculpture. Beautifully illustrated, the book brings together 300 paintings spanning fifty years, by one of the most admired and respected artists living and working in Norway today. The volume includes an interview with Widerberg in which he describes the inspiration and influences behind the main themes in his paintings.

An overview on the modern period of Arab revolutionary abstract art, viewed as a statement of modernity and progressiveness. This richly illustrated volume aims at mapping the abstract art trends in the Arab world during the modern period. Including artists born between 1910 and 1960, it offers a panorama of selected personalities in order to shed light on 50 years of artistic production that needed to be revisited after three decades of oblivion and neglect.

A new privileged point of view, an original, all-round take on the evolution of Fontana’s oeuvre through his complete graphic work

Lucio Fontana Ambienti Spaziali Architecture Art Environments edited by Germano Celant Size 91/2 x 11 in. (24 x 28 cm) 408 pages, 243 colour and 189 b/w illustrations, hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-1429-0 £ 60.00, $ 95.00, Can. $ 95.00

he catalogue raisonné of the works on paper by Lucio Fontana (Rosario de Santa Fe, 1899 – Varese, 1968) is one the most complete and cutting-edge publications on this fundamental aspect of the work of one among the leading protagonists of twentieth-century’s artistic development. Edited by Luca Massimo Barbero, the catalogue follows a chronological order and is divided into sections devoted to the diverse directions explored by the artist in his wide-ranging creative activities. Experimentation on paper was Fontana’s chosen means to test the richness and novelty of his inspiration. In fact, through his works on paper he would constantly verify his insights, both in the embryonic and defining stage of his formal and conceptual discoveries. This catalogue raisonné starts with the astonishing corpus of figural works and culminates in the artist’s original invention of “spatial” art, which led to the creation and development of the highly individual “holes”, “environments” and “slashes”. The catalogue raisonné presents over 5,500 works executed between 1928 and 1968, with individual entries that include bibliographical and exhibition reference.

• This catalogue raisonné covers four decades of the artist’s creative activity. • The study includes extensive and heretofore unpublished documentation on Fontana’s dialogue with architecture and decoration, up to his experimentation with unusual techniques and materials. Luca Massimo Barbero, a scholar and critic of modern and contemporary art, is Associate Curator of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and author of numerous publications and exhibitions devoted to the art of the twentieth century. 62

From the Palaeolithic “Great Mothers” to the Greek athletes, from Titian’s Venus of Urbino to Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man, from the Odalisque by Boucher to the amazons of Helmut Newton and the desolate lifeless bodies of Andres Serrano, the nude is the theme of artistic representation par excellence. In a richly illustrated new reference book the nude body as the incarnation of perfect beauty and the ban imposed by Christian culture; the renewed triumph of ancient beauty in the Renaissance and the study of anatomy; the eighteenth-century visual licentiousness and the photographic nude; ideal beauty, eroticism, pornography; the nude and its flaunted truthfulness in twentieth-century art; and finally, the nude as work of art in post-WWII avant-garde, with performance, body art and experimental theatre.

W

alter Chappell (1925–2000) is considered one of the foremost figures in twentieth-century American photography. His thinking and vision of the world were closely connected with the intimistic and spiritual explorations undertaken between the 1950s and 1970s by artists like Minor White and Paul Caponigro. Chappell photographed various subjects, but his inner eye was particularly stimulated by the form of the human body and landscapes, as well as the combination of both, through which he endeavoured to perceive the creative flow, the energy that runs through and connects all things. Produced to accompany the first major European retrospective show of Walter Chappell’s work, this catalogue includes over 130 photographs, all originals, as well as the unfinished and previously unpublished album World of Flesh, which the photographer intended as the primary publication on his work.

Don McCullin Impossible Peace edited by Sandro Parmiggiani

An impressive retrospective covering the last fifty years of Don McCullin’s work

D

on McCullin (London, 1935) is one of the most important photographers of our time. For more than 50 years, his uncompromising black-andwhite photographs have shaped our awareness and understanding of modern conflict, and its consequences. These images tell the remarkable story of his life and work, including most famous assignments in Berlin, Vietnam, Cambodia, Biafra, Bangladesh and the Middle East. Winner of the Warsaw Gold Medal and the World Press Photographer Award, he received the ICP Cornell Capa Award in 2006. The key periods in McCullin’s life, including his renowned work for the Sunday Times, are explored here alongside more recent projects with Christian Aid, his photographs of last tribes in the Omo River Valley, South Kenya and Irian Jaya, New Guinea and, in the last few years, still lifes and English landscapes at his home in Somerset. A photographic journey across the ruins and landscapes of the Roman Empire boundaries completes the volume.

Edward Weston edited by Filippo Maggia

From nudes to landscapes, a wide-ranging retrospective of the work of Edward Weston, one of the greatest twentieth-century American photographers

E

dward Weston (Highland Park, Illinois, 1886 – Wildcat Hill, California, 1958) began to take photographs at the age of 16 and in 1911 opened his first photographic studio in the town of Tropico, California. He became an increasingly important figure on the American art scene, so much so that in 1936 he was the first photographer to receive a research grant from the Guggenheim Foundation. In 1946 the MoMA in New York gave him a major retrospective, showing 300 works and thus definitively confirming him as one of the great artists of the twentieth century. Often directly compared to painting and sculpture, Weston’s photography is the expression of a relentless quest for pureness, both in composition and in the almost obsessive perfection of the image. This catalogue, published to accompany an exhibition in Modena, the first show in Italy after twenty years, celebrates Weston’s extraordinary oeuvre with over 120 original photographic prints.

s a result of five years of work, the photographs collected in this volume were taken in different countries: Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Botswana, Morocco, Benin, South Soudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Zambia, Uganda. The camera lens of Sergey Yastrezhembsky is focused on the scenes of patriarchal daily routine of Africans, who try to preserve their adherence to the traditions of their forefathers in everyday life, customs, and religion regardless of the rising pressure of pervasive globalization.

• The author was present at religious ceremonies usually forbidden to strangers, filmed habitual occupations, style of life and evidence of the boundless creativity in arts and handicraft of these populations. • Sergey Yastrzhembsky considers this book as a kind of requiem to the vanishing patriarchal Africa.

Mighty Silence. Images of Destruction The Great 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami of East Japan and Fukushima photographed by Yasushi Handa

n extraordinary photographic report by the famous Japanese fashion photographer Yasushi Handa on the thunderous tsunami that swept through the Tohoku region on the heels of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which struck on 11 March 2011. The images capture the landscape 20 days after the ocean water had retreated. The tsunami engulfed cities and towns that thrive on fishing and agriculture, along the Pacific coastlines of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. It spared no one and no thing. Over 18,000 people were killed or went missing. Taken with a 65-million pixel camera, the pictures are almost surreal because they capture details missed by the naked eye. What we’ve typically seen in the media are people determined to move beyond their misfortune, to deepen their ties with the community and overcome the overwhelming adversity; in contrast, this book puts the harsh reality first and forefront.

Hajj - The Journey through Art Exhibition Album edited by Mounia Chekhab-Abudaya and Cécile Bresc

A richly-illustrated volume devoted to the Hajj, the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, across the centuries Specifications size 81/4 x 113/4 in. (21 x 29.7 cm) 160 pages 112 colour illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2090-1 £ 42.00 not available in US/Canada

O

ne of the five pillars of Islam central to Muslim belief, Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must make at least once in their lifetime if they are at all able. This catalogue, accompanying a major exhibition in Doha, Qatar, charts the history of this deeply personal journey. It explores the history of this pilgrimage through the centuries, focusing on the routes taken by pilgrims, the rituals of Hajj as depicted through art, the experiences of pilgrims after completion of Hajj, and includes a special section dedicated to the oral histories and objects of Qatari pilgrims. Beautiful objects, including historical and contemporary art, textiles and manuscripts from the collections of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha bring to life the profound spiritual significance of the sacred rituals that have remained unchanged since the Prophet Muhammad’s time in the 7th century AD.

• The book accompanies the first exhibition of its kind to be held in a Muslim country. • Although the concept of the exhibition is based on the British Museum’s earlier showcase, as part of the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, it is unique in that 90% of the objects to be exhibited are from Qatari collections. Dr. Mounia Chekhab-Abudaya is the Curator of Manuscripts at the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha. She worked at the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre Museum in Paris for the preparation of the new display which opened in September 2012. Dr. Cécile Bresc is the former Curator of Coins at the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, and the assistant curator of the exhibition.

hat lies behind the search for excellence in a sports car? This book reveals the work put into the production of the new supercar, LaFerrari: a car whose ambitions are evident in its very name. A voyage of discovery of the Italian passion, method and excellence that created an authentic masterpiece on four wheels. Comparisons with its predecessors, the first style drafts, the clay models, wind-tunnel research, studies on cockpit ergonomics, vehicle dynamics, the perfection of the gears and brakes – all is revealed here in an ebb and flow of images and drawings. Furthermore, the development of the HY-KERS technology, thanks to its contribution in Formula 1 races, allows an insight into one of the most advanced frontiers in the world of sports cars destined for the road. A splendid catalogue devoted to the work of an artist responsible for some of the most original glass artworks

T

hrough around 300 works, documents and original drawings from private collections and museums from all over the world, this important volume reconstructs the work and life of Carlo Scarpa from the very beginnings of his career, when he worked as artistic director for the Venini glassworks between 1932 and 1947. The experience he acquired in those years offered him the possibility of following his peculiar experimental vocation that was to also distinguish his work as an architect, and of carrying forward research intended to investigate the expressive possibilities of glass. Under Scarpa’s artistic direction the forms created at Venini glassworks were more sober and modern, geometrically-inspired, and above all, the importance of the designer’s role was established in the history of twentieth-century Venetian glass, which owes to him much of its substantial renewal.

umerous leading twentieth-century artists showed an interest in jewellery, often through love of a woman, or for their daughters. Despite the opening of art from the 1910s onwards to the abstract and the conceptual, they happily bridged the gap that seemed to be deepening between art and craftsmanship. The collection of Diane Venet, which she regularly exhibits, is set out like a veritable intimate museum, narrating a specific history of art. This fascinating book features over 200 pieces of jewellery designed by the greatest artists of the twentieth and twenty-first century, among whom Picasso, Warhol, Niki de Saint Phalle, Kapoor, Soto, Louise Bourgeois, Spoerri…

Federico Delrosso Architects Pushing the Boundaries edited by Porzia Bergamasco

The first monograph devoted to this Italian architect and designer, exploring his twenty-year career Specifications size 91/2 x 11 in. (24 x 28 cm) dual-language edition (English-Italian) 184 pages, 222 colour and 12 b/w illustrations bodonian binding ISBN 978-88-572-1982-0 £ 34.95, $ 55.00, Can. $ 55.00

he works by the architect and designer Federico Delrosso (1964) constantly reflect a passing of the torch between past and present. His career as a designer clearly reflects the teaching of modernists—especially Gio Ponti, Ernesto Nathan Rogers and Le Corbusier, who envisaged the figure of the architect as a designer of things ranging “from the spoon to the city”, and who constantly stressed the idea of the exploration of space, later taken up by Richard Meier. Through more than 200 images, many of them never before published, the volume examines the fascinating story of Federico Delrosso Architects, a team focusing on residential and commercial planning and design based in Milan.

• Minimalistic and rational in his formal choices, emotionally engaging and innovative in the materials and finishings that shape his projects.

• A sober formal elegance enhanced by a measured and experimental use of materials.

odern skyscrapers are often inseparably associated with images of the cities that host them: the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Gherkin in London, the Empire State Building in New York, and so on. And while skyscrapers emerge in large numbers, only the most beautiful of them become symbols of the city that hosts them. This book presents Vasily Klyukin’s projects: towers and residential buildings that have not found their home yet, but some of them will be built in the future and become architectural symbols of our age.

• In the book, real photographs of over a hundred cities from every continent are used to present Vasily Klyukin’s projects, taking into account climatic, seismic and historical characteristics as well as his own associations with each location, showing the shock of a bold fantasy made real. • The volume gathers a number of ideas for buildings, including new constructions, reconstructions, but also the redesigning of facades on a series of buildings in Monaco. 78

The Amazing Shoemaker Fairy tales and legends about shoes and shoemakers edited by Stefania Ricci

Salvatore Ferragamo’s amazing life and an extraordinary journey into the world of fairy tales about shoes and shoemakers

I

n the course of time, myths and legends from around the world have often featured shoes and the shoemaker’s amazing craft, perhaps because the shoe is a symbol of grace and wealth, or perhaps because of that enchanted aura that surrounds the figure of the shoemaker. Salvatore Ferragamo’s remarkable life, which runs parallel to stories of fairies, mystical shoemakers and magical shoes, also has the ingredients of a fantastic adventure. The reader will be spellbound by each and every chapter of this story, and carried as if in a dream to the realm of imagination: from Salvatore’s childhood to his voyage on a steamer headed towards the United States, down to his arrival in Hollywood, where his shoes conquered the world of cinema and were worn by the most beautiful women in the world: the princesses and fairies of the modern age.

Specifications size 91/2 x 11 in. (24 x 28 cm) 320 pages 517 colour illustrations paperback ISBN 978-88-572-1928-8 £ 42.00, $ 50.00, Can. $ 50.00

Next came the magnificent 2010 exhibition in Paris, beneath the majestic vaults of the Grand Palais; it was then hosted in 2011 by the National Museum in Beijing and subsequently by the Aurora Museum in Shanghai. Nearly 600 masterpieces of Bulgari’s art were thus exhibited for the first time to the general public. Displayed along with special features, as the gorgeous collection that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor, were archival documents such as photographs, preparatory drawings and film stills, eloquently illustrating the epoch to which each piece belonged. Since past catalogues have already exhaustively documented the jewels on display, this book takes a different approach, crowning this quartet of exhibitions with a selection of images that pay homage to the extraordinary visual heritage of the maison. It also provides a stunning gallery of international celebrities wearing Bulgari jewels, from Elizabeth Taylor, Ingrid Bergman and Sophia Loren to Lauren Hutton, Kirk Douglas and Sting.

Fiction and Music

In the Gondola David Alan Brown

A masterpiece by Canaletto leads a young art historian on the trail of an unsolved mystery

Specifications size 5 x 61/2 in. (12.5 x 17 cm) 56 pages, 7 colour and 4 b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-1593-8 £ 7.99, $ 12.95, Can. $ 12.95

A

young art historian pursuing academic success. A painting by the most famous eighteenth-century painter of vedute, Canaletto. A gondola once possibly belonging to the poet Robert Browning – and who else before him? These are the key elements of the novel. When Jeremy Allyn is assigned Canaletto’s Vedute by his teacher as the topic for his dissertation, a subject many have already written about, he realizes he must find an original perspective. He therefore decides to focus on Canaletto’s figures, a secondary feature of his celebrated architectural scenes. This marks the beginning of an adventure with unexpected turns that will lead Jeremy to make some astonishing discoveries and to uncover a crime which had remained buried for centuries.

• The engaging adventures of a young art historian: a detective story set in eighteenthcentury art and a crime that had remained buried for centuries. • The mysteries underlying a masterpiece by the Venetian painter: Il bacino di San Marco, kept at the Columbia Museum of Art.

The Beatles in Comic Strips Enzo Gentile and Fabio Schiavo

A collection of some two hundred cartoons from all latitudes dedicated in various ways to The Beatles Specifications size 81/2 x 11 in. (21 x 28 cm) 240 pages 222 colour illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-0811-4 £ 25.00, $ 39.95, Can. $ 46.00

G

enuine icons of pop culture, like Marilyn and CocaCola, the Beatles were fated to meet up with the world of comics. For the first time this book documents the interest that cartoonists, publishers and enthusiasts have shown in their special approach to the universe of comic strips; a rich and variegated relationship with thousands of publications, in every part of the world, and a production that continues to the present day. In some stories the Beatles are the protagonists, in others they make cameo appearances, while others feature their lyrics transformed into comic strips. Published on the 50th anniversary of their first single (Love Me Do) in early September 2012, the book celebrates the band with an original approach and honours the legend that endures through the years and changing fashions.

• The book features cartoons from all over the world. • Nothing of this kind has ever been published in this form anywhere in the world. • Double colourful poster inside. 84
