When the time comes to make New Year's resolutions, the conventional wisdom is to focus on weight. Such wisdom is understandable, as many people spend the holiday season indulging in big meals and all the treats synonymous with having fun. While it's acceptable to make healthy resolutions, a slimmer waist and a healthier diet should not be the only goals for the year ahead. In light of the

last several years, it's important for men and women to make financial resolutions for the year ahead, too. No one can say with certainty when, or if, the economy will rebound, and men and women should look at the New Year as a suitable time to make some financial resolutions for the future. * Reassess your investment plan. Since 2008, the market has been up and down like a roller coaster. Those

who have weathered the storm have no doubt witnessed big gains and significant losses over the last few years, and the turn of the calendar is a great time to reassess investments and possibly make some changes. Are you taking on more risk than you're comfortable with? Is your portfolio too conservative? How well are you diversifying? Look at your investments from every angle and determine if it's time to make some changes. * Resolve to be more liquid. A 2011 poll from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling found that 64 percent of Americans would need to utilize a source other than their savings account to pay for a $1,000 unplanned expense. That percentage illustrates that most adults just don't have enough cash on hand. This year, resolve to be more liquid. Being more liquid enables you to more effectively handle emergencies, and it also helps you avoid being forced to sell investments at the wrong time. * Shake things up. If you rely on one individual to handle all of your financial needs, such a practice needs to change. No matter how much you trust this person, don't fall into a trap where one person acts as your financial svengali. Such an arrangement proved very costly to those men and women who trusted the likes of Bernie Madoff, a onceprominent financier who turned out to be nothing more than a criminal mastermind orchestrating history's largest

Ponzi scheme. This year, if you haven't done so already, make sure your financial advisor, money manager, custodian, and trustee are all different people. * Negotiate lower rates. Use the onset of the New Year as a chance to negotiate newer and lower interest rates on existing loans or credit cards. If you have exercised financial responsibility over the last 12 months, paying down debts and paying all bills on time, this is the perfect time to negotiate lower rates and reap the rewards of your good behavior. * Don't invest in anything you don't understand. Too often investors get caught up in so-called expert forecasts and act impulsively based on the advice of some talking head they see on television or hear on the radio. Unfortunately, such "experts" aren't always certified financial professionals, and some might even have ulterior motives for pushing certain investments and shunning others. What's more, few people know the track record of these "experts," so their advice should not be taken at face value. A simple rule for the year ahead should be to never invest in anything you don't understand. If an investment opportunity seems worthwhile, do all of your homework to gain a solid understanding of the opportunity before investing any money. Healthy resolutions go beyond a slimmer waist and a healthier diet. This year, resolve to get healthier financially as well.

Many people take advantage of yearend automotive incentives to trade in their cars for something shiny and new. There's a good chance that incentives will be even more enticing this season thanks to events that occurred in early 2011. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami that ravaged Japan in March 2011 impacted the production and supply of many vehicles. Furthermore,

many "domestic" cars are built or are comprised from parts that are made outside of their native countries. Therefore, it's not just Japanese brands that have been affected by extreme weather this past year. What this spells out in dollars and cents to the average consumer is the ability to save some money on a new car simply because automotive retailers are looking to move merchandise

and recoup some of the losses from earlier in the year. Many automakers are extending incentives until the first few months of 2012 to capitalize on post-holiday spending. Some industry experts predict low interest rates, competitive rebates and other wheeling and dealing to attract customers. Although the sales prices may be available, customer interest might still be tepid because of the ongoing recession. However, there just may be ample opportunity for those with spending cash to save on a new vehicle. When heading to the dealership, keep these tips in mind. * Know the invoice price on the car by doing your research. It will help you negotiate the lowest price available. * Don't appear too anxious to buy a car at a particular dealership. Tell the salesperson you're shopping around. * It's best to negotiate for the lowest total price of the car, NOT the lowest

payment. Sales strategies often enable salespeople to work the numbers to get you your payment. But that could mean a longer loan term, which would raise the overall cost of the car due to interest. * Check out the safety reports and crash test ratings of the vehicle you're considering. Also, research the resale value if you're not planning on keeping this car for a long time. It could make a difference in the make you select. * While some dealerships may not be open to negotiating price, they may be offering a low interest rate, which can save you money. Also, certain extras could be included for no cost. Now could be the time to see recordlow prices on vehicles as dealerships try to move leftover inventory and recover from the slump in production caused by last year's tragic earthquake in Japan.

Do you think that all New Year's resolutions are a bit fishy? Perhaps you're suspicious of the fads that appear each January, offering us the latest in fitness and diet trends that promise a slimmer you in the year to come. This year, instead of focusing on weight loss, why not resolve to try a tried and true resolution that will mean truly better overall health for you and your family -- eating well with foods like True North's Omega-3 rich Atlantic salmon from the Gulf of Maine, where the salmon is the freshest? 2012 should be the year for paying more attention to overall health and well-being. Atlantic salmon is one of the most healthy and nutritious food choices available and is a great addition to any New Year's resolution that is aimed at living healthier. It's an excellent source of protein and loaded with vitamins and minerals, and is also one of the best sources of natural Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fats are often known as "the good fats" and are considered essential because we need them to live a healthy life but we have to get them from external sources like seafood. The American Heart Association recommends that people include at least two servings of fish, particularly fatty fish such as Atlantic salmon, per week in their diets in part because

of numerous health benefits associated with Omega-3s. As a great source of Omega-3 DHA and EPA essential fatty acids, Atlantic salmon helps the body's heart health - helping prevent heart disease and stroke, reducing the risk of cancer, lowering cholesterol; and may assist in brain health -- maintaining healthy brain activity and reducing the chance of developing Alzheimer's disease in adults, and enhancing brain development and promoting learning in children. Studies have also shown Omega3s may prevent depression, schizophrenia and memory loss, along with just generally increasing our daily energy levels and acting as an anti-inflammatory. Atlantic salmon leads the way, surpassing all other seafood, including wild salmon, in Omega-3 DHA and EPA amounts per serving. Not only that, but it's an excellent source of protein and lower than beef or chicken in saturated fats. It's easy to start adding more Atlantic salmon to your diet and you can start out simply with basic recipes like True North's Salmon with Soy-Honey and Wasabi Sauce. Salmon isn't complicated to cook, and when you combine the great taste with the knowledge that it's so good for you, you'll find yourself preparing it more often.

A great way to work salmon in to your new year's meal plan is to start slowly by swapping out one of your guilty pleasure meals -- something you know isn't very good for you -- with a quick delicious meal of Atlantic salmon from the Gulf of Maine, where the salmon is the freshest. You'll feel better about the choice you've made and your body and mind will thank you. Salmon with Soy-Honey and Wasabi Sauce 4 Servings Ingredients 4 5-6 oz (150-180 g) Heritage Salmon Portions For salmon 1/2 cup (125 ml) mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine) 2 tablespoons (30 ml) soy sauce 1/4 cup (65 ml) rice vinegar 1 tablespoon (15 ml) finely grated, peeled fresh ginger For sauce 2 tablespoons (30 ml) soy sauce 1/4 cup (65 ml) honey 1 tablespoons (15 ml) fresh lime juice 2 teaspoons (10 ml) wasabi powder 1 tablespoons (15 ml) water Directions 1. Stir together mirin, soy sauce, vinegar, and ginger in a shallow dish. Add fish and marinate, covered, at room temperature for 10 minutes.

2. Boil soy sauce, honey, and lime juice in a small saucepan, stirring frequently, until thickened, about 4 minutes. 3. Stir together wasabi powder and water in a small bowl. 4. Preheat broiler, and cook fish on oiled rack, 5 to 7 inches from heat, until fish is just cooked through, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and drizzle with sauces. 5. Serve with wild rice and steamed asparagus. Whether grilled, baked or poached, True North Atlantic salmon provides some of the essential nutrients and fatty acids needed for good health -and it tastes delicious too. TF122833 HEALTHY EATING TIPS * Bake, broil or grill your salmon instead of pan-frying it. * Limit the amount of oil you use. * Flavour your salmon with seasonings like dill, lemon or pepper instead of butter or oil. * If you do use oil, make it olive oil. Research suggests that, like salmon, this monounsaturated fat lowers the risk of heart disease. * Pair your salmon with a healthy side dish like steamed broccoli, carrots or vegetable stir-fry. Not only will these colorful veggies look good, they're good for you too.

Cut energy costs at home Homeowners spend thousands of dollars per year on energy. Whether a home is big or small, energy costs are a concern for homeowners. Though some of the costs of home ownership are beyond a person's control, there are some steps homeowners can take to reduce energy costs and save substantial amounts of money as a result. * Address any leaks. One of the most effective ways to cut energy costs is to weather strip doors and windows throughout the house. Doing so will keep warm air in the house when it's cold and prevent drafts that occur when cold air enters the home through cracks and leaks. If a home has an attic, be sure to seal pipes, chimneys or ductwork. Addressing leaks can save homeowners as much as 10 percent on their annual home energy costs. * Use compact fluorescent lightbulbs instead of incandescent lightbulbs. CFLs use one-quarter to one-third less energy than traditional incandescent

lightbulbs. In addition, the Alliance to Save Energy notes that CFLs can last up to 10 times longer than traditional lightbulbs. * Be mindful of the thermostat. Most homeowners and their families spend a good portion of their day out of the house. Home heating costs can be reduced by as much as 20 percent if homeowners simply lower the thermostat during the day by 10 F. For homeowners who feel they won't remember to do so on a regular basis, a programmable thermostat will do the job on its own. * Lower water temperature. Lowering water temperature can also lead to substantial savings. Homeowners can save as much as five percent on their water bill by lowering the temperature on their water heater by as little as 10 F. When doing so, touch the outside of the water heater. If the outside is cold, the water heater has sufficient insulation If the water heater is hot to the touch, wrap a water heater jacket

around it to increase efficiency. * Replace older appliances. Older appliances, be it an older central air conditioning unit or an older water heater, often need to expend more energy than they did when they were new. What's more, especially older appliances

Allen’s FAMILY HEATING & COOLING

might not meet Energy Star standards, which can cost homeowners substantial amounts of money over the course of a year. Homeowners who replace such appliances might be eligible for tax credits when buying more energy efficient products.

Windchill Versus Air Temperature During the winter, meteorologists report the actual air temperature outside and the windchill temperature. Do you know the difference between the two? Air temperature is the thermostat reading of the temperature outdoors. Windchill temperature is what

it feels like to the body when the wind is blowing. According to the National Weather Service Office of Climate, Water and Weather Services, as the wind increases, it draws heat from the body, decreasing skin temperature and eventually the internal body

Did You Know? According to the 2009 National Health Interview Survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 46 million persons under the age of 65 are uninsured in the United States, an increase of nearly 2.5 million persons from the preceding

year. The same survey found that 6.1 million children under the age of 18 were uninsured at the time of interview, which marked a decrease of roughly half a million uninsured children from the year prior. While the number of uninsured children un-

Dear God, The other day, a 56-year-old suburban Dallas man facing marital and financial problems killed his estranged wife, two teenage children and three other family members on Christmas Day while dressed as Santa Claus before turning the gun on himself… A few days later, a western New York woman sent her husband on an errand then used a shotgun to kill her father, her 10-year-old daughter and herself…. Also in Texas……Santa Claus was shot dead by a jealous husband late Saturday night in a double murder…. Over in New Orleans we read….Detectives have arrested the live-in girlfriend of a man shot and killed the day after Christmas... In St. Maries, ID: A man has been arrested after a St. Maries woman was shot and killed on Christmas Day… It has been documented that in Syracuse, NY: A Syracuse man has been arrested on charges of beating his girlfriend to death on Christmas Eve. All these murders took place on Christmas Day or within a few days of the celebration of Christmas. I am heartbroken to hear news of such tragedies. It was my understanding that this season was the celebration of the birth of Your Son, Jesus. I was told that He came to save us from our sins. It is very hard for me to comprehend all of the evil that has taken place in just a few short days. These were just a couple of newspaper clippings that I read. There were numerous of murders that occurred all over the world, during this same time period. This is my prayer in response to all of this: That You would look down on all the corruption and begin to put compassion, love, forgiveness, and mercy into the hearts of men and women. We need it so desperately. We need to look at mankind as a whole and realize that You made us in Your image and in the likeness of Your Son, Jesus. It doesn’t matter which country we reside in, we all were created the same. We all bleed the same. We all breathe the same air. We all were birthed into this life through our mother’s womb. Help us to understand and accept our differences. Help us to see life as You see it. Help us to value what You have given us; LIFE ITSELF. Please hear my prayer! Marjorie

New year, new you! Many people invest time and energy in losing weight after the holidays. If you’re one of them, the most important thing to remember is to adopt healthy habits that last. Glenda Kinder, nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension, suggests working on habits that result in both health benefits and weight loss. Weight-lossonly diets don’t work because they focus on avoiding forbidden foods, not on enjoying delicious, nutritious foods. When making diet changes, keep it simple. Focus on making different choices and examine the types of food you typically eat. Instead of highly processed foods made from white flour, look for ways to eat more whole-grain foods. It’s never been easier to find a tasty, whole-grain product in breads, cereals, crackers and other grain foods. One of the best ways to satisfy your appetite is to eat a lean, healthy protein at each meal. Healthy proteins like chicken or turkey breast, fish, lean red meat, whey protein and nonfat dairy can help you stay on your diet plan. For some meals, choose a vegetable protein like nuts, beans, tofu or edamame. In general, a protein serving should not be more than the size and thickness of the palm of your hand. Proteins take longer for your body to digest, so you feel full longer. A meal high in protein and plant foods can prevent cravings for up to four hours. Another practice for a healthy diet is to eat two colors at every meal. This means eating two or more servings of plants — the fresher and more colorful the better — morning, noon and night. Although juice is a healthy choice, it’s

best to limit the amount consumed to no more than 3/4 cup a day. You’re better off eating the whole fruit — it’s more satisfying and provides more fiber. There’s nothing like fresh produce for improving health and achieving weight loss. Vegetables are more important than fruits, so try to have at least one vegetable at each meal. If you follow these simple guidelines and incorporate great recipes like my Chicken and Apples with Lemon Balsamic Sauce, you can control hunger, and you’ll give your body the disease-fighting nutrients it needs.

Chicken and Apples with Lemon Balsamic Sauce Chicken breast meat is a healthy but rather bland source of protein. Pairing lean chicken with apples and spinach in this flavorful lemon balsamic sauce showcases each ingredient and provides you with a lean protein, fruit and a vegetable in one dish. 4 chicken breast halves with the skin but no bone (about 1 1/4 pounds) 1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Cooking-oil spray 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup canned reduced-sodium chicken broth or chicken stock 1/2 teaspoon agave syrup 1 large Jonagold or Mutsu apple (8 oz.), cut in half, cored and sliced thinly 1 (16 ounce) bag triple-washed baby spinach 1 tablespoon whipped butter 1. Season chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. 2. Spray a large skillet with the cooking-oil spray and heat on high until hot; reduce heat to medium-high and add the chicken breasts, skin side down.

Saute for 6 minutes or until the skin is nicely browned. Transfer with tongs or a slotted spoon to a plate and cover loosely with aluminum foil. 3. Turn the heat to high. Mix the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of poultry seasoning, vinegar, lemon juice and zest, garlic, broth and syrup in skillet until well-blended. Bring sauce to a boil. 4. Turn heat to low and add butter, stirring until it melts. Add apples and half the bag of spinach and stir. Simmer for 6 minutes and add remaining spinach. Simmer another 3 minutes, until the apples soften and the sauce reduces slightly. 5. Add chicken, skin side up, to the pan, along with any juices from the chicken plate. Cook 12 to 14 minutes over medium heat, or until chicken is just cooked through. Transfer chicken to each of 4 plates and top each serving with some of the sauce. Serve with

stock.xchg photo whole-wheat pasta, couscous or brown rice. Serves 4. (Additional information provided by www.missourifamilies.org) (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Give back to the farmers Hello, I’m Haley Groat and I am 18 years old. I currently attend Morrisville State College. I am a freshman and also the 2011-2012 Delaware County dairy princess. The question I am most frequently asked is why do you want to be a dairy princess, since you are not from a dairy farm? I always smile and say that growing up with a father that transports and delivers milk has given me great respect for the farmer’s way of life. I have seen how the dairy industry touched the lives of so many small businesses and people. It provided jobs to farmers and their children, it opened feed stores and grocery markets and it’s what fuels our mornings every single day. I know my cereal wouldn’t taste the same without a delicious serving of milk. My father has been in the dairy industry for 30 years now, and I am the granddaughter of a dairy farmer so I know how hard the life of a farmer can be. Being dairy princess gives me the chance to represent all the hard working farmers and people who work in the dairy industry. And it is my pleasure to give back to them what they have given to all of us. I have been diligently working as dairy princess through school programs, parades, bank visits, farm This week’s Sudoku Solution

Haley Groat, Delaware County Dairy Princess

meetings, Ice cream socials and in the great Delaware county fair. My favorite part of being dairy princess was the (fuel up to play 60) program I did with the Walton middle school’s fun and fitness program. I also got the opportunity to talk to the football team about refueling with chocolate milk and how it helps their bodies after a hard workout. I am also working with the Walton school to get a milk vending machine to promote healthier choices instead of soda and PowerAde that contain lots of sugars. I would like to thank all you farmers that wake early in the morning to provide the products our community thrives on. I would also like to thank you for working 7 days a week and 365 days a year to put nature’s most perfect drink on tables all across America. Being a Dairy Princess to me is not about the crown or the sash but for the reason and ability to give children a chance to hear about the importance of having dairy in their diet. And furthermore to give back to the hardworking farmers that work hard so we don’t have to. The Delaware County Dairy Princess program is made possible through the support of the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council.
