Homeowners know no home is perfect. While the notion of a dream house is nice, every home eventually experiences a problem or two. Many problems are bound to occur sooner or later, but there are a few that diligent homeowners can prevent. One of those preventable problems is flooding. Any home with floor drains or plumbing fixtures below street level can flood, and this can be due to in-
clement weather, such as heavy rainstorms, local sewer system backup, or groundwater swelling. Flooding can even occur in the spring when melting occurs as the air temperature increases. While homeowners won't be able to control the weather, they can take steps to floodproof their home. * Do some preventive landscaping. If the ground around the home's foundation slopes toward the house, make
some grading changes so that the ground slopes away from the home. * Insulate the heating ducts. Some home heating ducts are under the basement floor. In such homes, homeowners should make sure these ducts are properly insulated and watertight. * Make sure the vents all lead outside the home. The weather can cause moisture issues, but some moisture problems can come from inside the home as well. Clothes dryers and bathrooms are both internal moisture sources, and these sources should always be vented outside the home. * Clean gutters and downspouts. Gutters and downspouts should be cleaned to ensure water is effectively being diverted away from the home. Clean gutters and downspouts in the spring after a long winter, and do so again in the fall to keep fallen leaves from blocking the flow of water. Downspouts should extend four feet from the outside wall of the house. * Inspect the home at least once a year. Before buying a home, buyers often hire a professional inspector to ensure the home is safe and sound. But the inspections should not stop once buyers sign on the dotted line. To prevent flooding, homeowners should inspect their home's foundation for cracks once a year. If the home has a chimney and fireplace, check for cracks there as well. If any cracks are discovered, consult a professional immediately. * Clean out basement drains. Basement drains should be cleaned annually from the house to the street. If the drains are still slow after cleaning, then clean them more than once a year. * When leaving the home for an extended period of time, turn the water valve off. Homeowners worried about

How to floodproof your home
flooding can calm those fears when going on vacation or another long trip by turn the water valve off at the source. This ensures that, should a line break while no one is home, water will not pump into the house. Floodproofing a home can save homeowners from potentially costly repairs and unsightly damage to a home's interior.

What women should know about heart disease Millions of women around the country live with cardiovascular disease and may not know it. The consequences of being uninformed can be fatal. According to the National Coalition for Women With Heart Disease, heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women. More women die from heart disease than breast cancer in any given year, and the Public Health Agency of Canada says that heart disease is the leading cause of death among Canadian women over the age of 55. That's a frightening reality that might surprise some. What puts women at risk? There are a number of factors that can put a woman at risk for heart disease. * Hypertension: High blood pressure can exert extra stress on blood vessel walls and make them more likely to get clogged. * Cholesterol levels: Cholesterol in the blood can build up on the inside of blood vessels and lead to blockages that can cause a number of different problems. * Smoking: Women who smoke have a higher risk of heart attacks than non-
smoking women. Those who smoke and take birth control pills are at an even higher risk. * Obesity: The chance for heart disease increases with a woman's weight. Even losing a little bit of weight can help diminish the chance. * Diabetes: High blood sugar can damage the arteries that supply blood to the heart. * Family history: A woman with blood relatives who were diagnosed with heart disease is at a heightened risk of developing heart disease. * Lack of physical exercise: Inactivity can promote heart disease. Daily physical activity can go a long way to help the heart and prevent heart disease. Preventing heart disease Recognizing the risk factors for heart disease is just the beginning when it comes to prevention. Once those risk factors are known, it's up to women to take steps to live a more healthy lifestyle. Fortunately, there are many ways women can do just that. * Exercise daily. Thirty minutes of exercise per day is recommended. This

can improve cardiovascular health by getting the blood moving through the body. It can also help women lose weight, decreasing risk for other ailments as a result. * Quit smoking. Do not use tobacco products. Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for developing heart disease. Smoking narrows the arteries in your heart and can also contribute to the hardening of arteries, called atherosclerosis. This condition can ultimately lead to a heart attack. Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke replaces some of the oxygen in the blood, according to the Mayo Clinic. This can raise blood pressure and force your heart to work harder. * Eat healthy. Eating foods that are low in cholesterol and sodium can help with heart disease risk. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, and other sources of whole fiber can help. Consumption of fish, which is high in omega-3 fatty acids, is also beneficial. * Maintain a healthy weight. A doctor or nutritionist can help you determine a
healthy weight for your body type and height. Most use calculations to determine a body mass index, or BMI, which considers certain factors, including height and weight, to determine if you have a proper amount of body fat. Waist circumference is also a tool used to measure how much abdominal fat a person has. * Go to the doctor regularly. A doctor can run certain tests to discover any red flags for potential heart problems. He or she will check blood pressure, cholesterol levels, conduct screenings for diabetes, and discuss family history. With all of this information, the doctor will be able to make certain assumptions about heart disease risk and guide you on the path to finding a program that will be effective for you. Although heart disease is the foremost killer of women in North America, it can largely be prevented and risk factors managed with adequate health care. Women living with any of the aforementioned risk factors should make an appointment with their doctor to determine a course of action.

Sealed with an (X) People often use the symbol "X" to represent a kiss at the end of a love note or card but don't understand how this letter came to be associated with the meaning of a kiss. It is believed the custom dates back to when the majority of the public was illiterate. The X or a "cross" was used as one would use their signature today, to mark a person's word to abide by a contract or agreement from a Christian perspec-
tive. The X was often then kissed as a further symbol of honesty. Eventually, the X itself came to represent a kiss and no longer just a signature. Why the letter "O" came to represent a hug is not as widely understood. Some say that it is because an O is a shape of hugging arms. Others say it is what Jewish immigrants would use as their own signature, similar to the X, so they were not mistaken for Christians.

14 romantic movies to share Dinner and a movie have been a dating staple for generations. On Valentine's Day, couples often opt to stick with what works and dine out and then catch a flick -- either at the theater or curled up on the sofa at home. Choosing the right movie may take some compromise. He may believe a sexy James Bond-type girl dodging explosives and sports cars is the ultimate in cinematic excellence. She may believe it isn't a good movie unless you've used a full box of tissues. However, the movie industry and others may have their own thoughts on what constitutes an ideal Valentine's Day movie, or one that can be enjoyed when you desire to put a little romance in the air. Here are 14 movies deemed very romantic. See if they will be the right fit for your movie night. 1. Dirty Dancing: This 1980s flick stands the test of time 25 years later. Baby, a good girl from an affluent family, falls in love with Johnny, a drifter dance instructor, while she's on a family vacation at a Catskills summer resort. This movie showcases that sometimes love transcends prestige, personal status and well-meaning fathers. 2. Titanic: In another classic movie where love trumps social class, Rose and Jack fall in love aboard the doomed ship. Their passionate connection survives a tragedy and the ultimate separation. 3. Princess Bride:A Rob Reiner movie, this fairytale tells the story of Buttercup and Wesley, a poor farm boy who wins the love of his employer. When Wesley is presumed dead and Buttercup becomes engaged to an area prince whom she doesn't love, viewers are taken on an adventure that shows that even death
cannot stop true love. 4. Gone With the Wind: If a classic romance is what you desire, look no further than this epic film. Scarlett O'Hara is a conspiring woman who wants to choose her own husband, but ends up in the arms of rascal Rhett Butler amid the drama of the Civil War. 5. Pretty Woman: Despite a controversial storyline that puts Richard Gere and Julia Roberts together -- he's a businessman and she's a prostitute -the theme of the movie is how love has no social boundaries, and sometimes it's better to look beyond one's own backyard for the love of your life. 6. Legends of the Fall: A tragic but inspiring tale of three brothers who all fall in love with the same woman, Susannah, for different reasons, although only one eventually marries her in the end. Family strife and complications show the darker side of love. 7. A Room With a View: Lucy vacations in Italy, where she meets people who are more passion-driven than those in her native Britain. When she meets Julian, a Brit who has been in Italy a while and has learned the wiles of romance, she is drawn into a liaison that she soon regrets. 8. Sleepless in Seattle: Sam loses his wife Maggie and has to raise his son, Jonah alone in their new hometown of Seattle. Annie, a Baltimore reporter, hears his heartbreaking tale when Jonah calls into a self-help radio talk show on Christmas Eve. Annie becomes fascinated with Sam's story and wonders if they should meet. 9. Bridget Jones's Diary: A modern day "Pride and Prejudice," Bridget is a single woman in her 30s who has a poor self-image and is also in a pseudo-rela-
tionship with her scoundrel boss, played by Hugh Grant. Bridget is consistently thrown into circumstances that involve a family friend, Mark Darcy, whom Bridget sees as uptight and boring. Eventually, however, she sees a different side of the supposedly boring lawyer. If you prefer the original tale, watch "Pride and Prejudice" starring Keira Knightly. 10. 50 First Dates: This quirky movie tells the tale of Henry, a bachelor and player who meets Lucy, a person with short-term memory amnesia who forgets everything from the day once she goes to sleep. Reliving day after day, Lucy starts to fall for Henry, who does his best to be memorable. 11. An Affair to Remember: Handsome playboy Nicky falls in love with Terry, a nightclub singer, while on a cruise from Europe to New York, despite each's engagement to other people. They agree to reconnect in sixmonths atop the Empire State Building to see if they should continue their relationship. But Terry experiences a situation that keeps her from their meeting, leaving Nicky to wonder if
her love has waned. 12. The Notebook: Allie and Noah meet at a carnival and fall in love but are kept from each other by Allie's disapproving parents who move her away. Allie waits several years to hear from Noah before getting engaged to another, but then must satisfy her curiosity whether Noah is alright. 13. The Holiday: Two women from different parts of the world agree to swap homes for Christmas and enjoy a vacation from their own lives. Iris travels from London to Beverly Hills, while Amanda goes from her opulent life to Iris' small cottage in Surrey. Both eventually meet their romantic matches in their new locales but fret over what to do once the holiday ends. 14. Ever After:An interpretation of the classic Cinderella story, the movie follows Danielle, who is treated poorly by her stepmother and stepsisters after her father suddenly passes away. A bit of a hellion, Danielle catches the eye of Prince Henry, who believes her to be a courtess and not the lowly servant girl she really is.

Q & A Ministries
Dear God, It has been a joy to see all the write-ups about Tim Tebow, the quarterback for the Denver Bronco. It reminded me of the apostle Paul who shared with us in Philippians Chapter 1 verses 12-18 about him being persecuted in taking a stand for being a Christian. It has given me more courage as a Christian. I hope that when I am challenged, as Tim Tebow has been throughout his college and professional career, that I will not be ashamed to take the same stand as he has. I have enclosed the Bible passage for everyone to see. I hope that as they read it, they will be encouraged and begin to share their stories with You. I have really enjoyed reading “Dear God” each month and hope that others will find it rewarding to their lives. I was hesitant, at first, to write but once these articles began to surface, I knew I had to respond with a grateful heart. These words from the Bible tell me how important it is for “the gospel” God’s Word to be shared, even when people try to use them to cause trouble for others. I will do my best to remember these words and to apply them to my life. “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear. 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice…” By the way, I like Your email addresses: DearGod7777777@yahoo.com and DearGod7x7@yahoo.com they are really cool. Sincerely, Billy

(NAPSA) — On cool days, family and friends should give a warm welcome to fruit-inspired dishes made with Duncan Hines®, Comstock® and Wilderness® pie fillings that are almost as easy to make as they are enjoyable to eat. For recipes, visit the www.piefilling.com.
1 tablespoon butter or margarine, cut into small pieces 1 tablespoon sugar 1. Preheat oven to 425° F. Place pie crust on a rimless baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Dust a rolling pin and parchment paper with flour and roll pastry into a rough 13-inch circle. 2. Place pie filling in center of pastry, leaving a 2inch border all around. Grate 1 teaspoon of lemon peel; squeeze 2 teaspoons of lemon juice from the lemon. Sprinkle both over pie filling. Scatter butter over top. 3. Fold pastry back over pie filling to make an uneven edge of 11⁄2 inches, leaving center of pie filling exposed. Sprinkle sugar over pastry border. Bake 20 minutes until the filling is bubbly and the pastry is golden brown. Cool slightly. Serve with ice cream if desired.

Creamy Hawaiian Apple Salad I think I’ve created almost as many apple salads as there are leaves on an apple tree! Apples add so much more than flavor when stirred into a palatepleasing salad. They also add fiber and vitamins. Try this tasty harvest-time apple salad and see if you don’t agree. 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free instant vanilla pudding mix 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder 3/4 cup water 1 (8-ounce) can pineapple tidbits, packed in fruit juice, drained and 1/4 cup liquid reserved 3/4 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping 2 cups cored, unpeeled and diced Red Delicious apples 3/4 cup miniature marshmallows 3 tablespoons chopped pecans 1. In a large bowl, combine pudding mix, dry milk powder, water and reserved pineapple liquid. Mix well using a wire whisk. Blend in whipped topping. Add apples, pineapple, marshmallows and pecans. Mix gently to combine. 2. Cover and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes. Gently stir again just before serving. Makes 6 (3/4 cup) servings. • Each serving equals: 146 calories, 2g fat, 3g protein, 29g carb., 269mg sodium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Starch, 1 Fruit, 1/2 Fat.
