Dear God, I am concerned as to how society is taking lightly the warning found in the following two passages of the Bible. Matthew 24:38-39 and Luke 17:28-30 New American Standard Bible (NASB) “For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be... It was the same as happened in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.” I am heartbroken, as I expect You are, with the way this world is heading. When we continue, as a people, as a nation, as a society, to ignore warning signs and the truth about the True and Living Word of God, we become a people who fail to understand and grasp the facts of our past. As we look all around us, the same lifestyles that were in the days of Noah and Lot are so prevalent today and a vast number of people are, once again, in acceptance of these lifestyles and carry on as though all is normal. A prime example is one of NBC”s “hot” and new TV programs: “The New Normal”; a program that is trying to redefine God’s most precious and sacred institutions. The people of Noah and Lot’s days began to suppress the truth of God’s Word and we see evidence of that in our day. We, as God’s children, need to: • stand up and be counted. • stand up and not be ashamed. • stand up and not allow the truth to be suppressed. In other words, • stand up to be the “light” of the world as Noah and Lot were. • stand up to continually proclaim the Truth until Christ comes again. God has provided a way of escape as He did for Noah and Lot. May those who have an unbelieving heart begin to understand and grasp the true warning signs of God’s Word. Thank you God for allowing me the opportunity to share my faith in You. Richard C. Morris

Halloween's world celebrations Halloween dates back thousands of years to ancient Celts and Europeans. Although Halloween is now largely associated with the celebrations that take place across much of North America, where 65 percent of Americans decorate their homes and places of business in the Halloween spirit, Halloween is celebrated in various ways around the globe. * England: In the past, Brits tossed objects such as stones, vegetables and nuts into a bonfire to frighten away the spirits. These symbolic sacrifices also were used as a form of fortune-telling. If a pebble thrown into the flames at night was no longer visible in the morning, then it was believed that the person who tossed the pebble would not survive another year. Halloween fell out of favor after the Protestant Reformation spread through the country. However, in recent years some have begun to adopt the American tradition of trick-or-treating.

* Hong Kong: A Halloween-type festival in Hong Kong is known as "Yue Lan," which is the festival of the hungry ghosts. It is believed that, during this time, spirits roam the world for 24 hours. * France: Halloween is considered an American holiday by most French and was relatively unknown before 1996. * Ireland: Ireland is thought to be the birthplace of Halloween, and many of the same traditions of old are still practiced today. In addition to costumes and treats, individuals may play an apple-bobbing game called "snapapple," where participants have to try to take a bite of an apple suspended on a string. Children also play tricks on neighbors, including "knock-a-dolly," which is essentially a variation on "ring-and-run." * Spanish-speaking nations: Many Spanish-speaking nations celebrate "El Dia de los Muertos." It is supposed to be a joyous event where people re-

member friends and family members who have died. Candles and incense are burned to help the departed find his or her way home. * Austria: Some people will leave bread, water and a lighted lamp on the table on Halloween night before going to bed. It was once believed that such items would welcome the dead souls back to Earth on a night Austrians considered to be full of strong cosmic energies. * Czechoslovakia: Czechs place chairs by a fireside on Halloween night. There are enough chairs for each living and dead family member. * Italy: Halloween traditions have just recently begun to blossom in Italy, where decorations and pumpkins are popular. While many of the traditions borrow from the Americans, there is at

least one uniquely Italian tradition taking place in the hill town of Corinaldo. La Notte delle Streghe, "The Night of the Witches," occurs in this town with music, dancing and a witchthemed fashion show that names Miss Strega (Miss Witch). * Australia: Halloween isn't as popular in Australia as it is in the United States and Canada. Australians may celebrate Halloween as Guy Fawkes Eve or Mischief Night. Children create mischief or get treats. Many Australians simply celebrate the holiday with a dance at their schools. Halloween is alive and well around the world. Perhaps this year North American families will want to incorporate some global traditions into their standard Halloween plans.

that studies indicate Halloween is in the top three among holidays that produce the most visits to hospital emergency rooms. Finger and hand injuries account for 17.6 percent of injuries, and children ages 10 to 14 sustain the greatest proportion of Halloween injuries. Trips and falls also account for a high number of injuries. There are also a good deal of children who become injured before Halloween arrives, many of whom sustain lacerations when carving pumpkins. To make Halloween a safe holiday, children and adults can heed these suggestions. * Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. Although kids might want to wear shoes that match the costume, shoes that fit well and are comfortable are a safer bet. This will help prevent tripping and falling over cumbersome shoes. It also reduces the risk of developing blisters and discomfort when walking from home to home. * Go trick-or-treating in groups. Children should not be allowed to go out in search of candy alone. Going in a group means that someone can get help if need be. Also, there is safety in numbers. Predators won't view a child as an easy target if he or she is with fellow trick-or-treaters. * Be visible. Since daylight saving time begins shortly after Halloween, there are

Trick-or-treating safety tips

fewer hours of daylight for trick-or-treating. When Halloween falls on a weekday, children have to wait until after school to venture out, and it can quickly become dark. Therefore, make sure that children are equipped with flashlights and put reflective tape on their costumes so they will be more visible to fellow pedestrians and motorists. * Stick to the sidewalks. Children should stay on sidewalks and cross the street only at established crosswalks. * Do not enter homes. Unless a child is with an adult and the home is owned by a trusted friend, kids should not enter homes for treats. * Avoid candles and jack-o-lanterns. A costume can easily catch on fire, so it is best to steer clear of candles, luminaries and lit pumpkins. * Bring water. Costumes can become hot and uncomfortable, especially when worn for long periods of time. Be sure children have water to rehydrate themselves. * Accessorize safely. Select flexible swords and knives if they are accompanying a costume. Avoid rigid items that can cause injuries. * Examine all candy before eating. Before kids have their first bite, parents should inspect candy wrappers to determine if there has been any tampering. Also, avoid homemade treats from homes unless you know the people who prepared the items.

Home,, Family,, Friendss & You Donna’s day: creative family fun by Donna Erickson Take hike to enjoy change of seasons Enjoy the changing of seasons from summer to fall by hiking and walking after school, after work and on Saturday mornings. And do it as a family. When you get moving together, you’ll not only feel better, but you’ll make special memories as you discover the fascinating world that is in constant motion right out your front door. Lace up your most comfortable shoes and put an extra kick in your step with these ideas: Hike for ABCs Before your first outing, find a medium-size spiral notebook your family can use as a nature journal. Let your kids decorate the cover and mark one

letter of the alphabet at the top of every left-hand page. The space leaves two pages for your family to enter sights, sounds and observations you encounter on your walk that start with a specific letter. You’ll soon discover that the ABCs exist just about everywhere. For example, you might spot a round “O” shaped bird nest tucked in a “Y” shaped tree branch. A cattail in a swamp looks like a dotted “I” and a root protruding through your path might look like a gnarly “D.” For a hard-tofind letter, search for it on license plates, ask permission and then help your child make a rubbing, using a piece of paper and a dark crayon. When you get back home, glue or tape flat finds and sketches to the

pages, and compose a poem or a little story about what you saw. Park and walk A friend once gave me this advice: “When going on an errand, take a child!” So this fall, include your child often when you do Saturday errands to the hardware store, dry cleaners, farmer’s market and wherever else your to-do list takes you. These mini “family errand” field trips provide natural opportunities for learning, communicating and sharing about how things work in a community. If these destinations are near your home, walk there together. If they are far from home, park in a spot farther away from where you are headed. You’ll get your extra walking in, avoid congestion and enjoy the benefit of driving out of the lot easily when you leave.

Most people, for obvious reasons, focus on food when trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. But behavioral scientists studying successful weight loss have found a few strategies beyond cutting calories that seem to work for many who have lost weight and kept it off. In a recent study in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, researchers at the University of Minnesota studied behaviors of more than 400 people who successfully lost at least 10 percent of their body weight in the past year. The researchers grouped the behaviors in four major categories: • Regularity of meals: People who tended to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner routinely were more likely to have better success at weight loss during the past year. They were also more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables. • TV-related viewing and eating: Participants were asked how often they ate snacks or meals in front of the television, how much TV they watched on an average day, and how often they ate after 7 p.m. Those who were more likely to engage in those behaviors tended to have a higher BMI (or body mass index, a standard measure of body fat based on height and weight) and higher fat and sugar intake. • Eating away from home: These behaviors include eating out at a restaurant (sit down or fast food); eating food provided by an employer or another employee at work; purchasing food at a convenience store or a gas station; and purchasing food items for a fundraiser. People who did these

things more often had a higher fat and sugar intake and a lower fruit and vegetable intake, and engaged in less physical activity. • Intentional strategies for weight control: Participants were asked how often they wrote down the amount and type of exercise they engaged in, as well as the calorie content of the food they ate; how often they planned meals and exercise in order to manage their weight; and how often they used meal replacements. Those who did these things more often saw many benefits: they tended to have a lower BMI; they experienced greater weight loss in the last year; they had a lower fat and sugar intake; they ate more fruits and vegetables; and they engaged in more physical activity. Take a look at the behaviors and see if any of them make sense to incorporate in your life. Adopting a few healthy strategies can make a big difference. Chow Line is a service of Ohio State University Extension and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center.

Brownies and cheesecake: a perfect match (NAPSA) — Can’t decide what to make for dessert? Why not try two fabulous favorites in one with a Brownie Bits Cheesecake — what’s not to love when a chocolaty brownie serves as a classic cheesecake’s crust, stir-in and topping? Start with a packaged brownie mix to save time when making the brownie crust and stir-ins. Once baked and cooled, the brownie “crust” is covered with a creamy cheesecake batter-but better, because it’s filled and topped with decadent brownie bits.

Brownie Bits Cheesecake

Crust: 2 packages (about 16 oz ea.) brownie mix (8-in.square size) Eggs, water and oil to prepare mixes Filling: 3 packages (8 oz. ea.) cream cheese, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup sour cream 6 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon almond extract Preheat oven to 350° F. Spray 9-in. springform pan and 8x2-in. square pan with vegetable pan spray. In large bowl, prepare one brownie mix following package instructions. Spread into bottom of prepared square pan. Prepare remaining brownie mix following package instructions. Spread into prepared springform pan. Bake both pans together for 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely. Turn oven down to 325° F. Cut approximately half of the brownies from the square pan into 3/4-in. pieces (about 1 1/2 cups);

set aside. Reserve remaining brownie for snacking. For filling, beat cream cheese and sugar with electric mixer at medium speed in large bowl until smooth and creamy, about 5-10 minutes. Beat in sour cream and eggs. Add vanilla and almond extracts. When filling is smooth, gently stir in 1/2 cup of the cut brownies. Pour over cooled crust. Sprinkle remaining 1 cup cut brownies over cheesecake batter; lightly press into batter. Place cheesecake in middle of oven. Fill a large pan with hot water and place on rack underneath cheesecake. Bake 1 hour, 25 minutes or until cheesecake is firm on top but mixture is still jiggly when gently shaken. Turn off oven; leave cheesecake in closed oven 30 minutes to cool down slowly. Remove cheesecake from oven and cool on cooling grid 1 hour. Refrigerate covered at least 4 hours or overnight. Makes about 12 servings. This delicious dessert duo serves a crowd, making it just right for entertaining or for any family celebration. Since it’s made ahead of time and chilled, there’s less time spent in the kitchen and more time

A Brownie Bits Cheesecake combines two favorite flavors.

Remembering Grandma by Courtney Luskin, Rensselaer County Dairy Princess Most dairy farms are family owned and operated. Growing up on my family farm means working with parents, grandparents, a sister, and a brother. I remember working early mornings, long days and late nights on the farm and in the milking parlor. Many times I worked with my grandma. She grew up on the same farm we worked as a family; even though she never went to college she was still very knowledgeable about the dairy industry. She taught me some of the things that I know and use to this

day. My grandma was a very loving and caring person. She loved to work with animals especially horses and cows. Grandma Betty hardly complained about going out to the barn, she loved to spend time out in there milking the cows, feeding the calves and petting the cats. Like all farmers, she was a very hard working person, who will always have a special place in my heart. My Grandma, Betty Ann Luskin passed away on Sept. 17, 2012 due to a longtime illness. I miss seeing her face around the barn and her loving her animals. She was an amazing person who will be missed by so many. Farmers like my grandma work hard to provide us with wholesome dairy products; they care about their land and their animals. Below is a recipe I found in my Grandma Betty’s recipe box as she wrote it. Lemon Goodie 1 lemon pie filling 1 med can fruit cocktail 1 can chunk pineapple (small) 1 carton (small) cream (think I usually double this) Cook pudding, refrigerate overnight. Add fruits and cream whipped good and stiff. Enjoy. Can be made with vanilla pudding too.

BBB cautions consumers and offers tips to avoid falling prey BUFFALO, NY — Millions of Americans receive a steady string of automated telephone calls from “Rachel” at Cardholder Services, who claims your “credit card interest rates may increase” or wants to help you “lower your credit card rates.” The Better Business Bureau warns Up-

state New York consumers these robocalls often come from criminals who are trying to obtain your credit card information in order to use it for their own criminal enterprise. Calls can go to home numbers and cell phone numbers. If you press “1? as instructed to get a person — you are connected

with someone who wants to ask questions about your credit cards. After the representative verifies the consumer’s name, phone and address, the representative then asks for the consumer’s credit card number. “Savvy consumer know if this was truly was a call from their credit card company, the repre-

sentative would already have their credit card number on file,” said David Polino, Better Business Bureau President. “We would like everyone who receives these calls to do as these savvy consumers do — hang up! These calls continue because they’re profitable for con artists. It’s important for consumers to know that most robo callers will hang up when consumers ask them questions.” BBB warns these kinds of calls generally begin with recorded messages that include statements like: “There is a problem with your account,” or “Your account is in good standing however it is urgent that you contact us concerning your eligibility for lowering your interest” or, “This is our final attempt to reach you since you’ve not responded to our other calls to discuss your credit card debt.” Automated messages invariably do not include the name of the company, but may claim to be with Card Services or Card Holder Services in an attempt to dupe consumers into thinking their credit card company was contacting

them. If consumers are caught by a “live operator” they would likely hear a sales pitch where representative ask for credit card numbers and claim they can lower interest rates or they can help to prevent an interest rate hike. BBB warns consumers against these traps and reminds them that many credit card companies will negotiate better rates for consumers who meet their criteria if they contact them on their own. Unfortunately some consumers report to the BBB they’ve paid hundreds of dollars and in some cases over $1,000 — to have the ‘credit card firm’ contact their credit card company and negotiate lower rates. Consumers simply don’t need to pay any company a thousand dollars to negotiate lower rates on their behalf. BBB offers the following advice for consumers who receive calls from companies offering to lower their interest rate: • Never give personal information, including Social Security, bank or credit card numbers, over the phone to an unknown telemarketer. Always research the company with

the BBB by reviewing their Business Review at www.bbb.org. • When considering any company offering any type of financial assistance, insist on getting a contract in which all terms and conditions are clearly explained before signing up or providing credit card or other payment information. • U.S. consumers can place their home phone number on the federal Do Not Call list by visiting www.donotcall.gov . If the consumer’s number is already on the list but continues to receive telemarketing calls — or is receiving robocalls on a cell phone — he or she can use the same Web site to report the incident to the FTC. While the Do Not Call is helpful, it’s not perfect. Consumers will be happy to know help could be on the way. The Federal Trade Commission announced an enforcement action on last month that may curtail these bothersome and malicious calls.
