Study: An apple a day lowers level of blood chemical linked to hardening of the arteries Eating an apple a day might in fact help keep the cardiologist away, new research suggests. In a study of healthy, middle-aged adults, consumption of one apple a day for four weeks lowered by 40 percent blood levels of a substance linked to hardening of the arteries. Taking capsules containing polyphenols, a type of antioxidant found in apples, had a similar, but not as large, effect. The study, funded by an apple industry group, found that the apples lowered blood levels of oxidized LDL — low-density lipoprotein, the “bad” cholesterol. When LDL cholesterol interacts with free radicals to become oxidized, the cholesterol is more likely to promote inflammation and can cause tissue damage. “When LDL becomes oxidized, it takes on a form that begins atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries,” said lead researcher Robert DiSilvestro, professor of human nutrition at Ohio State University and a researcher at the university’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. “We got a tremendous effect against LDL being oxidized with just one apple a day for four weeks.” The difference was similar to that found between people with normal coronary arteries versus those with coronary artery disease, he said. The study is published online in the Journal of Functional Foods and will

appear in a future print edition. DiSilvestro described daily apple consumption as significantly more effective at lowering oxidized LDL than other antioxidants he has studied, including the spice-based compound curcumin, green tea and tomato extract. “Not all antioxidants are created equal when it comes to this particular effect,” he said. DiSilvestro first became interested in studying the health effects of eating an apple a day after reading a Turkish study that found such a regimen increased the amount of a specific antioxidant enzyme in the body. In the end, his team didn’t find the same effect on the enzyme, but was surprised at the considerable influence the apples had on oxidized LDL. For the study, the researchers recruited nonsmoking healthy adults be-

tween the ages of 40 and 60 who had a history of eating apples less than twice a month and who didn’t take supplements containing polyphenols or other plantbased concentrates. In all, 16 participants ate a large Red or Golden Delicious apple purchased at a Columbus-area grocery store daily for four weeks; 17 took capsules containing 194 milligrams of polyphenols a day for four weeks; and 18 took a placebo containing no polyphenols. The researchers found no effect on oxidized LDLs in those taking the placebo. “We think the polyphenols account for a lot of the effect from apples, but we did try to isolate just the polyphenols, using about what you’d get from an apple a day,” DiSilvestro said. “We found the polyphenol extract did register a measurable effect, but not as strong as the straight ap-

ple. That could either be because there are other things in the apple that could contribute to the effect, or, in some cases, these bioactive compounds seem to get absorbed better when they’re consumed in foods.” Still, DiSilvestro said polyphenol extracts could be useful in some situations, “perhaps in higher doses than we used in the study, or for people who just never eat apples.” The study also found eating apples had some effects on antioxidants in saliva, which has implications for dental health, DiSilvestro said. He hopes to follow up on that finding in a future study. The study was conducted as a Master’s thesis by graduate student Shi Zhao, and was funded by a grant from the U.S. Apple Association/Apple Product Research and Education Council and a do-

nation from Futureceuticals Inc. of Momence, Ill. Also involved in the study were associate professor Joshua Bomser and research associate

Elizabeth Joseph, both in the Department of Human Nutrition, which is housed in the university’s College of Education and Human Ecology.

by David Uffington Bank pile on fees Because of the new banking laws that limit how much banks can charge retailers, user fees have continued to rise as banks have hustled to find other ways to prop up their income. The recent 15th annual survey by Bankrate shows that the average monthly fee is now in the range of $5.50 — up 25 percent in a year — for accounts that don’t pay interest. For accounts that do pay interest (averaging 0.05 percent), that amount is more than $14. ATM fees also are up, averaging

$1.57 (charged by your own bank) if you make a withdrawal at a bank not your own. The bank that you withdraw from will charge an average of $3.50 if you don’t have an account there. Overdraft charges now average $31. Non-sufficient funds charges are all in the $30 range across the country, except for two states. Free checking is on its way out: Only 39 percent of checking accounts today free, as opposed to 76 percent of banks offering free checking back in 2009. “Free” not only means free of a charge for having the account, but being free of the re-

sponsibility of meeting the bank’s requirements, such as keeping a minimum balance. There are ways to get around being charged fees, but they aren’t for everyone. Setting up direct deposit is one way, but not everyone works for a company that offers to pay electronically. Another way is to agree to keep a higher minimum balance at all times, although those minimums have continued to rise, in many cases to more than $6,000. Banks are betting that you won’t abandon them despite higher fees, that you’ll decide it’s just easier to stay and hand over the money, no matter how high the charges go.

They have a point: If you change banks you might need to deal with new routines, the inconvenience of changing a direct deposit, new tellers who don’t know you, and more. Perhaps you have a loan with an interest rate that’s directly tied to having an account (not a good idea, for obvious reasons). Best bet: Per Bankrate, more than 70 percent of credit unions still have free checking. If your bank’s fees are continuing to climb, investigate a credit union near you. The “pain” of switching banks is only temporary. For more information, see bankrate.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Insects: could they be what’s for dinner? by Tom Turpin, Professor of Entomology, Purdue University Back in biblical times John the Baptist was a participant. Long before European settlers showed up in the so-called New World, so were Native Americans. Ditto the ancient people living in the Orient. We’re talking about entomophagy — eating insects. Yes, according to Old Testament biblical accounts, John the Baptist wandered in the wilderness and chowed down on locusts and wild honey. I suppose one could argue that John didn’t have much in the way of food choices available so he had to make do. Locusts, called grasshoppers here in the U.S., would have been plentiful. These insects were so common and numerous as to constitute one of the biblical plagues inflicted on the Egyptians of the time. On occasion, Native Americans were also said to have engaged in the eating of insects. It was the massive emergences of periodical cicadas that attracted the gustatory attention of these people. Periodical cicadas, by the way, were misnamed locusts by the European settlers, who were unfamiliar with the insects that are found only in North America.

On the other side of the world, silkworms have been part and parcel of Oriental civilizations for centuries and not just for the silk they produced. Many silkworms ended up between chopsticks as a food item. The pupa of the silkworm is the stage that is eaten. This is because the pupa is formed after the caterpillar has spun the silken cocoon. The cocoons are boiled to collect the silk. After the average of 1,000 yards of silk from each cocoon is harvested, the cooked pupae remain. Despite the historical precedent for using insects as a food item, the practice is not currently widespread in some parts of the world. Modern people, in general, seem to have an aversion to eating insects. Why is not totally clear. However, most people seem to enjoy eating the insect cousins that live in the sea. I’m referring to shrimp and lobsters. These sea creatures and insects are both arthropods, animals with an exoskeleton, antennae and jointed legs. So we shun eating the landdwelling arthropods but pay good money to dine upon the arthropods of the sea! At least we do not, like many other animals such as birds and frogs,

intentionally eat insects. Intentionally is the operative term because most people do consume insects on a regular basis. The weak of stomach and insect haters may want to stop reading here. As it turns out, foods of plant origin may include insects or insect parts. So much so that years ago the U.S. Food and Drug Administra-

tion began publishing a document called “The Food Defect Action Levels.” This document lists the maximum “levels of natural or unavoidable defects in foods for human use that present no health hazard.” Here are a couple of examples. Peanut butter: average of 30 or more insect fragments in per continued on pg. 15

al disdain for insects, the idea that such food is dirty or just that we have never done so. As a food item, insects are high in protein and low in fat, and contain fiber and vitamins — nutritious food by any measure. Consequently, some people have promoted insects as a human food source and a way to provide more human food. Books on this subject date back

more than a half century. In 1951 A. S. Bodenheimer wrote the book “Insects as Human Food.” In 1971 R. L. Taylor authored “Butterflies in My Stomach,” complete with recipes. Two more recent titles are “Man Eating Bugs: The Art and Science of Eating Insects” by Peter Menzel and “Eat-a-Bug Cookbook” by David George Gordon. Professor Gene DeFoliart started

a food insect website. Insect festivals around the U.S., including Bug Bowl at Purdue University, have incorporated insect-cooking and -eating demonstrations as part of the festivities. Some people have even suggested that insect cultures might be a way to provide a continuous food source for future space travelers. Just another reason, I’m sure, for astronauts to complain about the food!

MORTGAGE & HOME BUYING UPDATE

How to Survive Buying Your First Home First time home buyers easily can be overwhelmed by the process of buying a home. In addition to the legal hurdles associated with purchasing a home, the stress of committing such a substantial amount of money can lead to some sleepless nights. But first time home buyers in the market for a home can prepare themselves for the process ahead of time. Though the following tips might not guarantee a smooth and stress-free home buying experience, they can answer a few questions and facilitate the process.

The lowest home prices in years and tax incentives are driving many people to purchase their first home. Few things are simultaneously as exciting and nerve wracking as becoming a homeowner. Preparation can make sure individuals are covering all of the bases.

• Establish your price range.

• Expect to pay costs.

As the housing crisis of the last several years indicated, many homeowners got in well over their heads. Some lost their homes to foreclosure, while others found it extremely difficult to pay their mortgage each month. First time buyers can avoid such scenarios by honestly assessing what they can afford and searching for homes within their price range. A host of Web sites, including some lender sites, provide free mortgage calculators so buyers can see just what they can afford. Lenders often recommend spending less than 30 percent of income on housing costs.

Closing costs are often a big shock to first time home buyers. Closing costs include lender fees, title and settlement fees, taxes, and homeowners insurance or homeowners association fees. Bankrate.com provides an annual closing cost survey for buyers to get a better feel of just what they will be spending when the time comes to sign on the dotted line. A lender can also give an estimate of what fees may total.

• Research rates and taxes. Certain external factors beyond the price of the home will factor into a homeowner’s monthly financial commitment. Taxes and homeowner’s insurance can vary greatly depending on a home’s location. Research property taxes in different communities, and show around for homeowner’s insurance when looking for a home.

VMM

• Consult some professionals. Real estate professionals in the area might be able to paint a picture of what the real estate market is like at the moment. Prices might be on the rise, on the decline or remaining steady. If looking in a specific area, consult with a real estate agent about the area and what to expect. When shopping for a home for the first time, buyers should expect the unexpected. However, the surprise element can be reduced if buyers do their homework before starting the process.

Savvy Tips to Help Sell Your Home There are so many questions that surround selling your home: Which realtor should you choose? How do I lure potential buyers? Don’t put your home on the market blindly. Following are a few tips to help get you started: CHOOSING A BROKER Speak with two or three brokers from different agencies. Ask them the same questions to compare what they would do to sell your home. Some questions to ask include: • How many years have you been in business? • How long have you sold houses in this area? • How many houses did you sell in the past year? • What is your commission? • If I were to work with you, how would you best market my house? • Will you organize meetings with potential buyers and will you coordinate them personally? • Can you give me names and telephone numbers of others families that have that have used your services?

PREPARING YOUR HOME

• Get rid of odors.

So you’ve chosen a broker but now you have to get your home in gear. No matter how much or little it costs, its important to do some “spring cleaning” to your home before you put it on the market. Paying even a little attention to the details can make a huge difference in the appearance of your home and attract more interest from prospective buyers. Some ideas include:

Place potpourri around the house, especially if you have pets or a smoker in the family.

• Clean the exterior.

• Eliminate clutter.

Keep the grass cut and the outdoor area tidy. Paint or wash the exterior of the home including windows, shutters, siding and doors. Examine the gutters, chimney and driveway; get them into good condition. Seal any cracks in foundation or walkways.

Remove any unnecessary garbage from your closets, garage, attic and basement. Store garbage, debris, lawn mowers and hoses out of sight.

• Touch up the interior. Clean and brighten rooms that have heavy traffic with a fresh coat of paint. Wash wallpaper, tiles, paneling, floors, carpets, tubs and showers. Clean heat and air-conditioning air filters.

It’s IMPORTANT to get your home into top notch condition for prospective buyers.

Office: 518-212-5680 Fax: 518-212-5683 Cell: 518-321-4374

Paul Hans

• Repair leaking or worn faucets and oil squeaky doors. Also, clean underneath sinks, fixing any leaks and painting any areas with visible damage.

• Prepare it for the arrival of guests. Put your best face forward. Store any items you don’t want visitors to see or have access to, like jewelry or other valuables. Get rid of excess furniture. Flowers and new guest towels also make a subtle yet important difference. Good luck!

Auto repair: wondering about your warranty? It’s a common misconception that only car dealers can perform the routine maintenance and repairs on a newer vehicle that is under warranty. In fact, it is law that consumers can patronize their neighborhood repair shop or do the work themselves without violating the manufacturer’s warranty, says the Car Care Council. Consumers are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which prohibits a manufacturer from voiding the vehicle warranty because service was done by a non-dealer. According to the FTC, “It’s illegal for a dealer to deny

your warranty coverage simply because you had routine maintenance or repairs performed by someone else. Routine maintenance often includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, fluid checks and flushes, new brake pads and inspections.” “Many motorists wonder if they will void their factory warranty if someone other than the dealer services their vehicle,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “The truth is that consumers can have routine repairs performed by their local independent repair shop or do the work themselves without

affecting the warranty. It is also important to note that using aftermarket parts does not void the warranty.” When using a non-dealer, independent aftermarket shop to maintain your vehicle, the council strongly recommends keeping records and receipts for all maintenance that is done to the vehicle and adhering to scheduled maintenance requirements. If a warranty claim arises, these records will provide proof that maintenance has been done in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendations and requirements.

Advice for families coping with an older driver’s changing abilities (BPT) — As we age, and watch our loved ones grow older, it’s important to think about — and plan for — a time when we may no longer be able to drive. But how do we decide when it’s time to transition from driver to passenger? In our busy suburban communities driving is essential to an independent lifestyle, and the decision to stop driving is a sensitive, personal one. In addition to creating practical challenges, giving up driving may stir feelings of anger, frustration, isolation and depression, so it is not to be taken lightly. With the significance of driving in mind, family members can help older drivers make the transition from driver to passenger. But how do you initiate the difficult conversation? The experts at AARP Driver Safety and The Hartford offer some advice. First, help older drivers stay safe behind the wheel for as long as possible. Adult children can help aging parents regularly maintain their vehicles. And if it’s time for a new car, adult children can help identify choices with new technologies that can enhance safe driving, like reverse monitoring systems. Older drivers can brush up on their driving skills with AARP Driver Safety’s course, which is specifically designed to help people 50 and older refresh their driving skills. To find a classroom course near you, call 888-227-7669, or visit www.aarp.org/findacourse; or sign up for an online course. Courses are available in English or Spanish. Second, family members should observe an older loved one’s driving by taking a ride as passenger and keeping an eye out for warning signs. It’s important to look for changes in driving abilities. These signs include: • Frequent “close calls” or near-crashes • Unexplained dents or scrapes on vehicles, fences, mailboxes, garage doors, etc. • Getting lost, even in familiar locations • Difficulty seeing or following traffic signals, road signs and pavement markings • Slower responses to unexpected situations, trouble moving the driving foot from the gas to the brake, and confusing the two pedals • Misjudging gaps in traffic at intersections or on highway entrance and exit ramps

• Experiencing road rage or inspiring it in other drivers • Easily becoming distracted while driving • Difficulty turning around to check the rear view while backing up or changing lanes • Receiving multiple tickets or warnings from law enforcement officers. Third, if you notice a pattern of warning signs and an increase in frequency, then it’s time to initiate a conversation. It’s important to choose the right time, place and messenger. “It’s important that the right person initiate the conversation,” says Jodi Olshevski, a gerontologist and assistant vice president at The Hartford. “Research indicates that 50 percent of married drivers prefer to hear about driving concerns from their spouses first, then doctors and finally adult children. Whoever initiates the conversation should have a strong rapport with the older driver. “Whoever it is should be empathetic, armed with facts about her driving and able to offer ideas for alternative transportation if needed,” Olshevski advises. Avoid bringing up the topic of driving during family gatherings. Instead, look for a quiet, private time when all parties involved will have privacy and minimal distractions. If it’s time to initiate a conversation with a parent or spouse about driving, AARP Driver Safety’s “We Need to Talk” seminar can help. Developed based on information created jointly by The Hartford and MIT AgeLab, the free, online seminar helps caregivers and those with an older loved one initiate productive and caring conversations about driving safety. To take the free seminar, visit www.aarp.org/weneedtotalk, and to download or order a free guidebook, visit www.thehartford.com/lifetime. While many older Americans are staying safe on the roads and driving longer than ever before, for some, health-related changes in vision, hearing, flexibility or cognitive function can make them less safe behind the wheel. With planning, preparation and sensitivity, families can help make the transition from being a driver to being a passenger a bit easier for older drivers and those who love them.
