Dear God Q & A Ministries

Dear God, I am concerned as to how society is taking lightly the warning found in the following two passages of the Bible. Matthew 24:38-39 and Luke 17:28-30 New American Standard Bible (NASB) “For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be... It was the same as happened in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.” I am heartbroken, as I expect You are, with the way this world is heading. When we continue, as a people, as a nation, as a society, to ignore warning signs and the truth about the True and Living Word of God, we become a people who fail to understand and grasp the facts of our past. As we look all around us, the same lifestyles that were in the days of Noah and Lot are so prevalent today and a vast number of people are, once again, in acceptance of these lifestyles and carry on as though all is normal. A prime example is one of NBC”s “hot” and new TV programs: “The New Normal”; a program that is trying to redefine God’s most precious and sacred institutions. The people of Noah and Lot’s days began to suppress the truth of God’s Word and we see evidence of that in our day. We, as God’s children, need to: • stand up and be counted. • stand up and not be ashamed. • stand up and not allow the truth to be suppressed. In other words, • stand up to be the “light” of the world as Noah and Lot were. • stand up to continually proclaim the Truth until Christ comes again. God has provided a way of escape as He did for Noah and Lot. May those who have an unbelieving heart begin to understand and grasp the true warning signs of God’s Word. Thank you God for allowing me the opportunity to share my faith in You. Richard C. Morris

HOME DECOR TRENDS: IT'S ALL ABOUT BEAUTIFUL BROWNS FOR TODAY'S HARDWOOD FLOOR COLOURS

One of the hot new trends in hardwood flooring this season is the use of beautiful brown flooring colors to inspire home decors by bringing nature indoors. Touted as the "colors of tomorrow" by a leading Canadian hardwood flooring manufacturer, these new colors already have interior design professionals and enthusiasts buzzing. Mercier Wood Flooring, one of North America's leading hardwood

flooring manufacturers, recently rounded out its Design + Program for hardwood floors with two trendsetting hues "Autumn Leaf" and "Kalahari" which they called the "colors of tomorrow" during their official launch. "Mercier Wood Flooring is always on top of the latest trends and never more so than today with the launch of these new colors," said designer Nancy Soccio of Dolce In-

terieur in Montreal. "My clients are always looking for these types of contemporary, yet nature inspired colours that work great in modern and classic decors." According to Michel Collin Marketing Director for Mercier they're latest offering have already become favorites with clients. "A perfect blend of dark brown tones, Autumn Leaf is resolutely contemporary yet gives the impression that nature has really come into your home," he added. "And because it respects the fundamental principles of global harmony, it will go well with any style."

Kalahari, another popular hue from this year's palette, features beautiful gold and cognac tones. Soccio liked the versatility of this color that can be used in any decor. "Delightfully paradoxical, Kalahari is both trendy and timeless," she explained. "With its warm color it will brighten up any room. It's ideal for both chic contemporary spaces and those that are more modern or countrystyle." These new colors are available in solid, engineered and LOC versions in varying widths. More information on the latest trends in wood flooring is available at www.mercierwoodflooring.com.

TRICK-OR-TREATING

Every year children anxiously count down the days until they are able to put on their costumes and head out into the neighborhood in search of candy. Although Halloween is meant to be a fun occasion for the young and the old alike, it can also be unsafe. Costumes may impair a child's vision and motor function. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says that studies indicate Halloween is in the top three among holidays that produce the most visits to hospital emergency rooms. Finger and hand injuries account for 17.6 percent of injuries, and children ages 10 to 14 sustain the greatest proportion of Halloween injuries. Trips and falls also account for a high number of injuries. There are also a good deal of children who become injured before Halloween arrives, many of whom sustain lacerations when carving pumpkins. To make Halloween a safe holiday, children and adults can heed these suggestions. * Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. Although kids might want to wear shoes that match the costume, shoes that fit well and are comfortable are a safer bet. This will help prevent tripping and falling over cumbersome shoes. It also reduces the risk of developing blisters and discomfort when walking from home to home. * Go trick-or-treating in groups. Children should not be allowed to go out in search of candy alone. Going in a group means that someone can get help if need be. Also, there is safety in numbers. Predators won't view a child as an

SAFETY TIPS

easy target if he or she is with fellow trick-or-treaters. * Be visible. Since daylight saving time begins shortly after Halloween, there are fewer hours of daylight for trick-or-treating. When Halloween falls on a weekday, children have to wait until after school to venture out, and it can quickly become dark. Therefore, make sure that children are equipped with flashlights and put reflective tape on their costumes so they will be more visible to fellow pedestrians and motorists. * Stick to the sidewalks. Children should stay on sidewalks and cross the street only at established crosswalks. * Do not enter homes. Unless a child is with an adult and the home is owned by a trusted friend, kids should not enter homes for treats. * Avoid candles and jack-o-lanterns. A costume can easily catch on fire, so it is best to steer clear of candles, luminaries and lit pumpkins. * Bring water. Costumes can become hot and uncomfortable, especially when worn for long periods of time. Be sure children have water to rehydrate themselves. * Accessorize safely. Select flexible swords and knives if they are accompanying a costume. Avoid rigid items that can cause injuries. * Examine all candy before eating. Before kids have their first bite, parents should inspect candy wrappers to determine if there has been any tampering. Also, avoid homemade treats from homes unless you know the people who prepared the items.

PUMPKINS TO USE IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS

Autumn is the season when pumpkins are ripe for the picking, and thousands of people flock to local farms and roadside vendors to select perfect pumpkins. Many pumpkins are turned into decorative jack-o'-lanterns for Halloween, only to be tossed in the trash come November 1. That could be because many people are unaware of the various ways they can put pumpkins to good use. Pumpkins are gourds and members of the squash family and have been grown and used for thousands of years. Evidence suggests that pumpkins date back to 7000 B.C., possibly originating in Mexico. Today they are widely used for decorating around Halloween, but there are many other things that can be done with pumpkins.

* Create a food vessel. Pumpkins can be transformed into bowls to hold soup, punch, fruit, or even dips. Make sure the pumpkin has been cleaned well of its pulp and seeds, as well as the stringy flesh that is inside. Rub the inside walls of the pumpkin with oil to keep them from drying out and caving in, then fill with your food of choice. * Make pumpkin puree. Puree from a pumpkin can be used in all types of recipes, from soups to baked goods. The puree also can replace the oil in cake recipes. Cut the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds and stringy membranes. Then place it cut-side-down in a pan with a little water in the bottom. Bake at 350 F for around 90 minutes. The flesh will become tender and easily removable. Blend the resulting puree in a food

processor and reserve flesh for recipes. Some pumpkins are sweeter or better to use as part of recipes. Check the variety you're purchasing. * Whip up a facial. Use some pumpkin puree with a little brown sugar and a dash of milk to create a vitamin-rich facial mask. * Get illuminated. Turn hollowed-out mini pumpkins into candles. Melt soy wax, beeswax or the gel type of candle wax that can be found at most craft stores. Add your favorite scent and place a wick into the bottom of the pumpkin. Then pour the wax into hallowed-out space and allow it to harden. Try the same thing with bumpy and multi-colored gourds for added decorating appeal. * Turn the pumpkin into a flower pot. Fill a hollow pumpkin with soil. You may not have to worry about scraping the pumpkin completely clean because the pulp can be used to help fertilize the potting soil. Plant your favorite fall flowers into the festive and earth-friendly flower pot. When the pumpkin shows

signs of rotting, simply put the whole thing into a traditional flower pot or bury it directly in the ground. * Make pumpkin stock. While vegetable or meat-based stocks may be the standards, pumpkin can be used to make stock as well. Clean out the seeds from the stringy guts of the pumpkin and put the guts into a pot filled with water. Add celery, carrots or any other aromatic vegetables for extra flavor. Allow to boil for at least 30 minutes. The stock is ready when it begins to change color. Strain and reserve the stock for use in a variety of recipes. * Add to compost bins. Pumpkins are rich in zinc, vitamin A and vitamin C, among other nutrients. You can add the discarded pumpkins to your backyard compost bins to further replenish the soil. * Turn into a billowing cauldron. Instead of a standard jack-o'-lantern, put a glass jar into the carved pumpkin, add dish soap and hot water to the jar and then put in a piece of dry ice. Bubbles and smoke will pour out of the pumpkin to create a spooktacular effect.

MAKE RAKING LEAVES EASIER AND MAYBE FUN Raking leaves is an annual event for people in many parts of the country. Some people enjoy getting out in the crisp, autumn air and spending a day cleaning up the yard. Others do not relish the idea of hours upon hours of leaf removal from their lawns. Making the process easier and more enjoyable benefits all involved. The majority of homeowners realize that in order to keep their lawn pristine, leaves and debris must be routinely removed from the yard. Raking leaves is an activity that

takes time and energy. It also can be strenuous work. However, by employing a few techniques, the work doesn't have to be that difficult and it might even be fun. * Invest in a quality rake, particularly one that bends a bit with each stroke. This will help maximize the number of leaves that will be collected with each pass. * If raking routinely causes aches and pains in your arms, shoulders and wrists, look for ergonomic rakes that are the proper height for your body.

* Move your legs when you are raking instead of remaining stationary and just using your arms. This will help reduce your risk of back pain. * Use smaller passes of the rake to collect leaves. This method is more efficient and less taxing on your muscles. * Turn on music while you are raking. Sing along to the tunes or move with the beat, and it just may take your mind off of the task at hand. * Be sure to rake downwind; otherwise every pile of leaves you collect may end up blowing around and giving you more work. * Rake leaves in groups. Enlist the help of all family members so that it will take much less time. Plus, everyone gets to spend time working together. Talking and joking around will certainly pass the time more quickly. * Use a leaf blower sparingly. It may seem advantageous to simply blow the leaves to the curb, but this can take more time and leaf blowers are much more noisy. Use the blower to dislodge leaves from hard-toreach areas, like behind bushes or under decks. Then rake the leaves into manageable piles.

* Wait until after the peak time for leaves to be falling before you do the majority of raking. Otherwise, you could spend just about every Saturday and Sunday cleaning up leaves. * Create family-centered games while raking. Have contests to see who can rake the largest pile in the shortest amount of time. Take breaks so that everyone can enjoy jumping in a giant leaf pile or horsing around. * Host a leaf-raking party with friends and family members. Tie it into a day when there is a football game on television, or toss around the old pigskin after the job is done. * Use two garbage pail lids to pick up leaves and put them into disposal bags. You'll grab more leaves in each pass. * There are some leaf blowers that can vacuum up leaves and mulch them at the same time. Put a portion of this leaf mulch into a compost pile or in your garden beds. * If your town collects leaves curbside, be sure to keep them in a neat pile to reduce the likelihood of leaves making their way into a nearby sewer. Leaf cleanup is a necessary task, but the task doesn't have to be tedious and time-consuming.

SAFETY FIRST IN KIDS' HALLOWEEN COSTUMES Dressing up and engaging in role play is an important component of childhood learning and having fun. Although costumes are regularly used in day care centers, schools and at home, they become the center of attention when Halloween arrives.

The practice of wearing costumes dates back at least 2,000 years to ancient Europeans and Celts. These cultures celebrated a holiday called Samhain, which represented their new year. Samhain fell on November 1 and marked the first day of

winter after the summer harvest. These ancient people associated the winter with coldness, darkness and death and believed the day before Samhain -- October 31 -- established a distorted boundary between the living and the dead. Therefore, individuals wore costumes and masks to avoid being recognized by the ghosts that came out on the night of Samhain. They would also place bowls of food outside of their homes to satisfy the ghosts and keep them from entering the home. Although Halloween has transformed more into a commercial holiday than one associated with death and the afterworld in the literal sense, many adults and children continue to participate in the rituals that were set forth many years ago, most notably wearing costumes. Parents may want to ensure that the costumes their children wear are safe to help make Halloween a day without injury. * Create a cape that doesn't

choke. A long cape can be stepped on and then tug at a child's neck. Instead, make a cape that has arm loops to keep it in place instead of a tie around the neck. This way there never will be a choking hazard. * Check makeup labeling. There are many safe Halloween cosmetics on the market, but some should not be used around the eyes or mouth because allergic reactions could occur. Double-check all ingredients lists and package warnings before using makeup on children, who tend to have more sensitive skin than adults. Also, it is a good idea to do a test patch of the product. Put a small dab of the makeup in the crook of the inside of the child's elbow. Wait 24 hours and see if any itching or a rash forms. This could indicate an allergy to the product. * Keep eyes open. Masks are popular components of Halloween costumes, but some designs can obstruct vision or

even impair breathing. Masks always should be comfortable to wear and offer good forward and peripheral views. * Choose natural materials for costumes. Buying a pre-made costume at the store may save you time and money, but there may be safer options if you construct a costume yourself. Many costumes are made overseas and may contain materials that are toxic or offgas volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), particularly plastic and vinyl products. Breathing in the fumes can be dangerous to young children. By making the costume yourself, you can control what fabrics and other materials are used. * Go organic.

There are a number of companies that are now making Halloween costumes from organic fabrics and recycled materials. A simple online search can give you a host of prospects for purchasing these costumes. * Make it visible. Trick-or-treating at night can be, well, tricky. Darkness can make it hard for drivers and other pedestrians to see costume-clad children. If going door-to-door will be

happening at night, consider giving children glow sticks or flashlights to carry. There also are reflective tapes that can be attached to costumes that make them light up when lights shine on the tape. * Avoid choking hazards. Many costumes come with small detailing or accessories that may be hazardous to young children. Youngsters who do not yet know what items should and should not be put

in their mouths should not wear costumes with removable or small detailing. Also, avoid the use of fake teeth (such as vampire fangs) and fake blood or goo capsules that are meant to be bitten, so they won't be swallowed. Halloween is meant to be a time of fun and adventure. Ensuring costumes are safe for children can help make the day even more enjoyable for all involved.

BBB cautions consumers and offers tips to avoid falling prey BUFFALO, NY — Millions of Americans receive a steady string of automated telephone calls from “Rachel” at Cardholder Services, who claims your “credit card interest rates may increase” or wants to help you “lower your credit card rates.” The Better Business Bureau warns Up-

state New York consumers these robocalls often come from criminals who are trying to obtain your credit card information in order to use it for their own criminal enterprise. Calls can go to home numbers and cell phone numbers. If you press “1? as instructed to get a person — you are connected

with someone who wants to ask questions about your credit cards. After the representative verifies the consumer’s name, phone and address, the representative then asks for the consumer’s credit card number. “Savvy consumer know if this was truly was a call from their credit card company, the repre-

sentative would already have their credit card number on file,” said David Polino, Better Business Bureau President. “We would like everyone who receives these calls to do as these savvy consumers do — hang up! These calls continue because they’re profitable for con artists. It’s important for consumers to know that most robo callers will hang up when consumers ask them questions.” BBB warns these kinds of calls generally begin with recorded messages that include statements like: “There is a problem with your account,” or “Your account is in good standing however it is urgent that you contact us concerning your eligibility for lowering your interest” or, “This is our final attempt to reach you since you’ve not responded to our other calls to discuss your credit card debt.” Automated messages invariably do not include the name of the company, but may claim to be with Card Services or Card Holder Services in an attempt to dupe consumers into thinking their credit card company was contacting

them. If consumers are caught by a “live operator” they would likely hear a sales pitch where representative ask for credit card numbers and claim they can lower interest rates or they can help to prevent an interest rate hike. BBB warns consumers against these traps and reminds them that many credit card companies will negotiate better rates for consumers who meet their criteria if they contact them on their own. Unfortunately some consumers report to the BBB they’ve paid hundreds of dollars and in some cases over $1,000 — to have the ‘credit card firm’ contact their credit card company and negotiate lower rates. Consumers simply don’t need to pay any company a thousand dollars to negotiate lower rates on their behalf. BBB offers the following advice for consumers who receive calls from companies offering to lower their interest rate: • Never give personal information, including Social Security, bank or credit card numbers, over the phone to an unknown telemarketer. Always research the company with

the BBB by reviewing their Business Review at www.bbb.org. • When considering any company offering any type of financial assistance, insist on getting a contract in which all terms and conditions are clearly explained before signing up or providing credit card or other payment information. • U.S. consumers can place their home phone number on the federal Do Not Call list by visiting www.donotcall.gov . If the consumer’s number is already on the list but continues to receive telemarketing calls — or is receiving robocalls on a cell phone — he or she can use the same Web site to report the incident to the FTC. While the Do Not Call is helpful, it’s not perfect. Consumers will be happy to know help could be on the way. The Federal Trade Commission announced an enforcement action on last month that may curtail these bothersome and malicious calls.
