Though the economy is on the mend, many families forced to make sacrifices during the downturn will continue to look for ways to maintain more control of their finances in the event another period of economic struggle surfaces down the road. It's safe to assume no family wants to find itself in the position millions of families did during the downturn, dealing with unemployment, a nonexistent job market and the specter of foreclosure on the family home. While there's no telling what the economic future holds, there are steps families can take to gain greater control of their finances and put themselves in a better position to handle whatever the

economy throws at them down the road. * Start saving receipts. Nowadays, more and more people use debit cards for daily purchases, including smaller purchases like cups of coffee. While this is more convenient, it also makes it easier to lose track of spending. Families should start saving receipts for all purchases, not just big-ticket items. At the end of the month, examine the receipts to see how much frivolous spending is going on. A close examination of receipts can help reign in spending on items that aren't generally large, but can add up over time. * Make a grocery shopping list. Another tradition of yesteryear that has seemingly fallen by the wayside, the grocery

list can help families save substantial amounts of money over time. Men and women who grocery shop without a list are more likely to spend more money than they had intended, buying extra food they don't need and making impulse buys as well. If you have a list of what you need when you go to the store, you'll not only save money but also you're likely to spend far less time at the store as a result. * Re-examine your commute. Men and women might prefer driving themselves to work. Driving to work alone is more convenient, but it's almost never more cost-effective. Consider public transportation where it's available. Public transportation can remove the stress from traffic jams, as men and women can bury their noses in books or watch a movie on their iPads rather than stare at

the vehicle in front of them. If no public transportation is available, propose a carpool to co-workers. Both of these alternatives can save individuals money on gas (the cost of which is once again on the rise) while adding years to their vehicle's life expectancy, helping commuters get more out of their vehicle dollars. * Reconsider your cable provider. Whereas cable television was once a novelty, nowadays cable television or satellite service has become the norm in households across the country. Though it might be hard to imagine a household without cable or satellite television, Web programming and DVD subscription services have made it much easier for men and women to continue to follow their favorite shows without committing to a costly monthly cable or satellite service.

Air duct cleaning 101 In addition to making resolutions and plans, the New Year ushers in chilly temperatures in much of the country. A heating system that is working well is essential to the comfort and health of homeowners. If you haven't done so, it's a good idea to have the heating system inspected to ensure everything is working smoothly. While this is best handled prior to winter's arrival, in the midst of the holiday hustle, it can be easy to forget about home maintenance. The National Fire Protection Association says that half of all home-heating fires in the U.S. occur in December, January and February. Failure to clean equipment, primarily creosote from solid-fueled heating equipment and chimneys, is a leading cause of home-heating fires. While the majority of homeowners are safe, it cannot hurt to inspect and clean the elements involved in most home furnaces and other equipment. Not only will this help prevent possible fires or help pinpoint possible problem areas that could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, this maintenance can help produce cleaner indoor air. In addition to routinely replacing the air filter on the furnace, it is commonly recommended to have the air ducts and venting throughout the home cleaned. Although there is no proven evidence that trapped dust and other debris in air ducts can pose a risk to personal health, many people prefer to keep the ductwork clear in the event particles may be hazardous or contribute to asthma or other breathing difficulties. This cleaning can be done once a year or every couple of years, depending on personal preference. The EPA does recommend duct cleaning if any of these factors are present: * There is substantial visible mold growth present. * Ducts are infested with vermin. * Dust or debris are literally clogging the ducts. * You can see dust or debris blowing into the home through supply registers (vents) in the home. There are many companies today that will service furnaces and heating systems and provide duct cleaning. As with any business, their reliability and honesty will have to be checked by the homeowner. When seeking a company to clean the ducts in your home, first ask friends and family members for referrals. Also, utilize customer review Web

sites such as Yelp.com or simply conduct a Web search for the company to learn of its reputation. You can also contact the Better Business Bureau or see if the business is registered with the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). Research has not demonstrated the effectiveness of any chemical additives or sealants placed in or on ducts for the prevention of bacteria growth or inhibition of dust formation. It is adviseable to steer clear of companies that try to push additional services or chemical applications that actually may hinder health more than dust. An untrained person can actually damage the ducts or heating and cooling system. That is why it is important to do your research. A properly done job should include cleaning all of the components of the system, including coils and condenser parts of the HVAC system itself. The job should take between 3 and 8 hours and will range in cost from $450 to $1,000, according to EPA estimates. The "blow and go" specials advertised for $100 are likely a waste of money and may inadvertently cause damage or dislodge dust inappropriately. The NADCA says the most effective way to clean air ducts and ventilation systems is to employ "source removal" methods of cleaning. This requires a contractor to place the system under negative pressure through the use of a specialized, powerful vacuum. While the vacuum draws air through the system, devices are inserted into the ducts to dislodge any debris that might be stuck to interior surfaces. The debris can then travel down the ducts to the vacuum, which removes it from the system and the home. Although there are no proven health benefits, air duct cleaning can help improve indoor air quality and may help an HVAC system operate more efficiently.Homeowners spend thousands of dollars per year on energy. Whether a home is big or small, energy costs are a concern for homeowners. Though some of the costs of home ownership are beyond a person's control, there are some steps homeowners can take to reduce energy costs and save substantial amounts of money as a result. * Address any leaks. One of the most effective ways to cut energy costs is to weather strip doors and windows throughout the house. Doing so will keep warm air in the house when it's cold and prevent drafts that occur when cold air enters the home

through cracks and leaks. If a home has an attic, be sure to seal pipes, chimneys or ductwork. Addressing leaks can save homeowners as much as 10 percent on their annual home energy costs. * Use compact fluorescent lightbulbs instead of incandescent lightbulbs. CFLs use one-quarter to one-third less energy than traditional incandescent lightbulbs. In addition, the Alliance to Save Energy notes that CFLs can last up to 10 times longer than traditional lightbulbs. * Be mindful of the thermostat. Most homeowners and their families spend a good portion of their day out of the house. Home heating costs can be reduced by as much as 20 percent if homeowners simply lower the thermostat during the day by 10 F. For homeowners who feel they won't remember to do so on a regular basis, a programmable thermostat will do the job on its own. * Lower water temperature. Lowering wa-

ter temperature can also lead to substantial savings. Homeowners can save as much as five percent on their water bill by lowering the temperature on their water heater by as little as 10 F. When doing so, touch the outside of the water heater. If the outside is cold, the water heater has sufficient insulation If the water heater is hot to the touch, wrap a water heater jacket around it to increase efficiency. * Replace older appliances. Older appliances, be it an older central air conditioning unit or an older water heater, often need to expend more energy than they did when they were new. What's more, especially older appliances might not meet Energy Star standards, which can cost homeowners substantial amounts of money over the course of a year. Homeowners who replace such appliances might be eligible for tax credits when buying more energy efficient products.

the wind increases, it draws heat from the body, decreasing skin temperature and eventually the internal body temperature. Therefore, the wind makes it feel much colder. Windchill

temperature only affects humans and other animals. It will have no effect on inanimate objects. Those objects will not cool down past the current air temperature.

As a great source of Omega-3 DHA and EPA essential fatty acids, Atlantic salmon helps the body's heart health - helping prevent heart disease and stroke, reducing the risk of cancer, lowering cholesterol; and may assist in brain health -- maintaining healthy brain activity and reducing the chance of developing Alzheimer's disease in adults, and enhancing brain development and promoting learning in children. Studies have also shown Omega3s may prevent depression, schizophrenia and memory loss, along with just generally increasing our daily energy levels and acting as an anti-inflammatory. Atlantic salmon leads the way, surpassing all other seafood, including wild salmon, in Omega-3 DHA and EPA amounts per serving. Not only that, but it's an excellent source of protein and lower than beef or chicken in saturated fats. It's easy to start adding more Atlantic salmon to your diet and you can start out simply with basic recipes like True North's Salmon with Soy-Honey and Wasabi Sauce. Salmon isn't complicated to cook, and when you combine the great taste with the knowledge that it's so good for you, you'll find yourself preparing it more often.

A great way to work salmon in to your new year's meal plan is to start slowly by swapping out one of your guilty pleasure meals -- something you know isn't very good for you -- with a quick delicious meal of Atlantic salmon from the Gulf of Maine, where the salmon is the freshest. You'll feel better about the choice you've made and your body and mind will thank you. Salmon with Soy-Honey and Wasabi Sauce 4 Servings Ingredients 4 5-6 oz (150-180 g) Heritage Salmon Portions For salmon 1/2 cup (125 ml) mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine) 2 tablespoons (30 ml) soy sauce 1/4 cup (65 ml) rice vinegar 1 tablespoon (15 ml) finely grated, peeled fresh ginger For sauce 2 tablespoons (30 ml) soy sauce 1/4 cup (65 ml) honey 1 tablespoons (15 ml) fresh lime juice 2 teaspoons (10 ml) wasabi powder 1 tablespoons (15 ml) water Directions 1. Stir together mirin, soy sauce, vinegar, and ginger in a shallow dish. Add fish and marinate, covered, at room temperature for 10 minutes.

2. Boil soy sauce, honey, and lime juice in a small saucepan, stirring frequently, until thickened, about 4 minutes. 3. Stir together wasabi powder and water in a small bowl. 4. Preheat broiler, and cook fish on oiled rack, 5 to 7 inches from heat, until fish is just cooked through, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and drizzle with sauces. 5. Serve with wild rice and steamed asparagus. How sleep affects work (and vice versa) People often discuss how sleep -- and often lack thereof -- can affect work performance. However, not as many people are studying how work impacts the ability to sleep. Research from the University of Pennsylvania published in SLEEP found that work time is the largest influence on how long an individual sleeps on both work and leisure days. It's not just in North America, either. A 2005 study found that 36 percent of women in Finland had trouble sleeping at least once a week that year; 27 percent of men in the study said the same. But just six years prior in 1999, only 26 percent of women and 20 percent of men were reporting sleep problems once a week in the country. Experts suggest the reason for this drastic change can be attributed to both occupational stress and abnormal working hours. Similar to how stress affects sleep, work has profound implications on sleep as well. When their schedule calls for it, shift workers must alter their body's natural circadian rhythm in order to switch from sleeping at night to day. Some employees work long hours

with only short bursts of sleep available before they have to report back to work the next day. According to the Better Sleep Council, sleep deprivation currently costs U.S. businesses nearly $150 billion annually in absenteeism and lost productivity. It may pay for employees and workers to collaborate on the best strategies for improving morale and performance by matching working hours with sleeping habits. This way each gets the best of both worlds. Not getting enough sleep can impact personal health in many ways, including: * Elevated risk of getting major illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. * Inability to concentrate or poor decision-making. * Putting the body in a state of high alert, increasing the production of stress hormones. * Weight gain, either through stress or eating at times when the body is not accustomed to eating. * Affecting skin and other tissue appearance. * Poor reaction times, which can lead

While there is no magic number, sleep experts say a person needs between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night to function at his or her prime. Dear God, The other day, a 56-year-old suburban Dallas man facing marital and financial problems killed his estranged wife, two teenage children and three other family members on Christmas Day while dressed as Santa Claus before turning the gun on himself… A few days later, a western New York woman sent her husband on an errand then used a shotgun to kill her father, her 10-year-old daughter and herself…. Also in Texas……Santa Claus was shot dead by a jealous husband late Saturday night in a double murder…. Over in New Orleans we read….Detectives have arrested the live-in girlfriend of a man shot and killed the day after Christmas... In St. Maries, ID: A man has been arrested after a St. Maries woman was shot and killed on Christmas Day… It has been documented that in Syracuse, NY: A Syracuse man has been arrested on charges of beating his girlfriend to death on Christmas Eve. All these murders took place on Christmas Day or within a few days of the celebration of Christmas. I am heartbroken to hear news of such tragedies. It was my understanding that this season was the celebration of the birth of Your Son, Jesus. I was told that He came to save us from our sins. It is very hard for me to comprehend all of the evil that has taken place in just a few short days. These were just a couple of newspaper clippings that I read. There were numerous of murders that occurred all over the world, during this same time period. This is my prayer in response to all of this: That You would look down on all the corruption and begin to put compassion, love, forgiveness, and mercy into the hearts of men and women. We need it so desperately. We need to look at mankind as a whole and realize that You made us in Your image and in the likeness of Your Son, Jesus. It doesn’t matter which country we reside in, we all were created the same. We all bleed the same. We all breathe the same air. We all were birthed into this life through our mother’s womb. Help us to understand and accept our differences. Help us to see life as You see it. Help us to value what You have given us; LIFE ITSELF. Please hear my prayer! Marjorie
