Dear God, On The White House Blog, I read the following: Yesterday, during an interview with ABC News, President Obama said, “I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” It’s no secret the President has gone through some soulsearching on this issue. He’s talked to the First Lady about it, like so many couples do. He’s heard from folks - gay and lesbian friends, staff members in long-term, loving relationships, as well as brave young servicemen and women he got to know through the fight to end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He’s sat around his kitchen table with Sasha and Malia, who have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. As the President said during the interview, “it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them. And frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change of perspective — not wanting to somehow explain to your child why somebody should be treated differently when it comes to eyes of the law.” In the end, the President said, he believes it’s important to “treat others the way you would want to be treated."We need to recognize that people are going to have differing views on marriage and those views, even if we disagree strongly, should be respected. It is quite interesting to me that President Obama, who confesses to be a follower of Jesus Christ and a born again Christian, never mentioned that he sought counsel from God on this issue. In the following passages it states: Proverbs 19:21 “Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the LORD will stand.” Romans 11:34 “For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, OR WHO BECAME HIS COUNSELOR?” Proverbs 21:30 “There is no wisdom and no understanding And no counsel against the LORD.” Psalm 33:11 “The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart from generation to generation.” The authoritative Word of God is the ultimate counsel that we as Christians must keep hold of. The Word of God will never change; it is the same yesterday, today and forevermore. We will all stand accountable to that Word one day, as will President Obama. avoid the following mistakes that buyers make regardless of whether the market is up or down. * Failure to get qualified beforehand. Mortgage qualification is essential when buying a home, as it gives buyers preapproval for a loan before they make any offers. Making an offer on a home before you know what the bank is willing to lend you is a waste of time for everyone involved, including you, the seller and the real estate agents involved. Some agents will not show a home if you don't have a preapproval. Once preapproved for a loan, don't take any steps that might put that approval in jeopardy. This includes anything that might drastically alter your credit score. * Being blindsided by additional costs. First-time homebuyers, once they have moved into their home, often experience some sticker shock when the additional expenses associated with home ownership arise. These additional expenses include property tax and insurance costs and can be substantial. Even those buying a condominium or co-op should expect monthly maintenance fees even if their new place is brand new and needs no maintenance. * Shooting for the moon. The ongoing recession is

in part the result of predatory lending that saw banks grant excessive loans to applicants who, in hindsight, could not actually afford all that they were approved to borrow. The result was many people buying homes they could not afford, and then suffering some steep consequences, including foreclosure, when the first mortgage payment came due or the interest rate rose. First-time and even veteran buyers must avoid shooting for the moon when it comes to buying a home, and instead only buy one they know they can afford. What the banks says you can afford isn't always the same as what you know you can afford. Only buy a home you know you can afford, regardless of whether the bank has approved you for a larger loan. * Pigeonholing yourself into an inadequate living situation. Just like buyers shouldn't go overboard, they also must avoid compromising on the things that are most important to them. For example, many of today's buyers, fully aware of the rash of foreclosures and all the housing horror stories of the last several years, are reticent to commit to a home, and might compromise with a condo or co-op. But if a home is what you really want, and another living situation that mirrors apartment life is going to make you miserable, don't settle for that situation for the sake of security. Doing so could cost you financially, especially when you realize the situation isn't what you'd hoped for and look to sell earlier than is ideal. * Skimping on the cost of an inspector. An inspector is your last chance to find out if a home is your dream home or a money pit. Even if a house appears to be everything you want, don't close on the sale until the house has been thoroughly inspected. The old adage that advises against judging a book by its cover certainly applies to buying a home, and prospective buyers should enlist the services of a qualified inspector before closing on the sale of a home.

Zesty summer steak salad 1 beef top sirloin steak, cut 3/4” thick (about 1 lb.) 1 tbsp. Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb Seasoning Blend 1 medium sweet onion, cut into 1/2” thick slices 6 cups chopped romaine lettuce 1 medium tomato, sliced 6 Hard-boiled eggs peeled and quartered New York Style Sea Salt Bagel Crisps Dressing: 1/3 cup red wine vinegar 2 tbsp. honey 1 tbsp. olive oil 2 tsp. dried basil leaves 1 tsp. Mrs. Dash Seasoning Blend
Combine dressing ingredients in small bowl. Reserve 1/3 cup for salad. Brush remaining dressing on onion slices. Press 1 tablespoon seasoning blend evenly onto beef steak. Place in center of grid over medium ash covered coals. Grill steak, covered, 7 to 11 minutes (on gas grill, 8-13 min over medium heat) for medium rare (145°). Grill onion 10-12 minutes or until tender, turning occasionally. Carve beef into slices. Arrange lettuce on serving platter. Top with beef and tomato slices, onions and eggs. Drizzle with reserved dressing. Serve with Bagel Crisps as desired. Makes 4 main dish servings
Pink potato salad 3 lbs. baby red potatoes, washed, skins on 1 small onion, diced 7 hardboiled eggs, sliced, 1 reserved 1/2 green bell pepper, diced 6 sliced radishes 1 cucumber, peeled and diced 1 cup frozen peas, thawed 3 Tbsp. fresh, chopped parsley Dressing: 1/2 cup chili sauce 2 cups mayonnaise 1/2 cup French dressing 2 tsp. salt 3 tsp. onion powder 1/2 tsp. pepper 1/4 tsp. garlic powder Paprika for garnish Prepare dressing. Boil potatoes until tender but firm. Cool slightly, cut in half and add dressing while still warm. Let sit while preparing other ingredients; then fold them in. Refrigerate. Garnish with sliced egg and paprika. Makes 8-10 servings
Mushroom and egg salad* 3 slices brown bread and olive oil
3-4 eggs, hard boiled and peeled, set aside 1 head frisée lettuce 1 bunch watercress 9 oz. chanterelle (or your choice) mushrooms 1 tablespoon butter 2 cloves garlic chopped For dressing: 1 Tablespoon capers 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 1/2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil Tear bread into 1” chunks. Drizzle with light olive oil and a touch of salt. Bake in 350° oven for 20 minutes, moving chunks around halfway through. They should be golden. Wash and tear up lettuce and watercress and spin-dry. Trim soiled ends of mushrooms and wipe clean. Melt butter in skillet, add garlic; swirl in bubbling butter until they begin to turn brown; add mushrooms. Season with S&P, cover; toss again and fry on high heat, uncovered, until soft. Make dressing by whisking those ingredients together. To Serve: Coat salad greens with dressing; arrange on plates with croutons scattered. Toss on mushrooms and arrange sliced eggs on top. Add a grind of cracked pepper and a touch of Kosher salt on yolks. Makes three main dish or six appetizer salads *Recipe adapted from Coloring the Seasons, by Allegra McEvedy
Corn chip salad 1 large head iceberg lettuce, washed, spun and torn 6 hard boiled eggs, chopped large 1/2 lb. bacon, fried, drained and crumbled 3/4 lb. grated Cheddar (or your favorite) cheese 4-6 cups corn chips, crushed Dressing: 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 cup mayonnaise 2 Tbsp. vinegar 1/4 cup milk Mix lettuce, eggs, bacon, cheese and corn chips together in a large bowl. Mix Dressing ingredients together and pour over salad just before serving. Makes 6 entrée servings
Lettuce salad roll ups Whole lettuce leaves (Romaine or Iceberg), washed and dried Tuna, Chicken or Egg Salad Put a scoop of salad in each leaf. Roll up and enjoy or wrap each in plastic wrap for a carb-free sandwich to go. Alternately, you may place the rolls in wraps or pitas. Source: Virginia Egg Council
