Q & A Ministries
I would really appreciate it if you could post this request. I am doing a survey for a summer course and I was wondering if I could get thoughts from your readers on the following questions. The topic is: “The Bible - Myth or Truth” • What proof do you have that there is a God? • If there is a God, does every religion have the same God? • Jesus; is He God or is He man or just a mythical figure? • Many people say that they are religious, what makes a person religious? • Why do religious people argue over what they believe the Bible says? • If there is a heaven, are Christians the only ones who will go there? All responses to these questions will be compiled; then put in a form of an essay for discussion in my fall class. I ask that each one answer the questions with sincerity of heart and mind and with an honest response. I ask that everyone send their responses to: Deargod7777777@yahoo.com Or Deargod7x7@yahoo.com Please send your comments in as quickly as possible. I would like to have this project done by the beginning of August. In that way, I will have a few day of summer vacation. Thanks for your involvement, Carrie Ann

Today’s boomers downsize homes, but upsize the amenities (ARA) — Say goodbye to the McMansion. According to a leading real estate website, Trulia.com, 2010 was officially the year that homes over 3,200 square feet ended their dominance and appeal. But don’t think that downsizing means downgrading. In fact, homeowners are looking to upsize their amenities to help them enjoy every inch of their homes. And, while many different generations are following this trend, Boomers are a unique group, looking to enjoy their smaller nest now that the kids have flown the coop - yet ensure that their homes are filled with the many amenities they’ll require for their golden years. Anything but basic baths While they may purchase a smaller floor plan, mature adults are
looking for ways to turn ordinary rooms into extraordinarily indulgent experiences. In the bath, that means the ultimate spa experience - from elaborate showers to heated floors and towel warmers. But when it comes to the bathroom, it’s just as important to keep it safe. Luckily, safe can also equate to stylish. Try installing comfortable seating for the shower with a beautiful fold-down shower seat made of teak and aluminum; or updating common bath accessories such as a paper holder, towel bar or shelf with a new integrated version that combines each accessory with a grab bar for added safety. “Our goal is to make every bath a safe bath. And, for savvy homeowners looking to incorporate safety at any age, it’s essential we provide products to meet their safety
and style requirements,” says Laurie Birko, Moen Home Care brand manager. “Our newest products, such as our Fold-Down Shower Seat and Grab Bars with Accessories look like decorative pieces rather than safety devices, so homeowners no longer have to choose between safety or style ... they can have both.” Kitchens that cook ... and more Different generations have very specific desires in terms of creating a kitchen to meet their needs, and according to findings from the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence, boomers are looking for kitchens with amenities that will assist with entertaining. These upgrades may include cooktops with special-purpose features, such as a built-in grill or wok; commercial or professionalgrade appliances; a built-
in coffee pot connected directly to plumbing or an oven that dramatically reduces cooking times without microwaves. Bedrooms that sizzle Mature adults still know how to spice up their bedroom with hot amenities, including fireplaces, heated mattress pads and large-capacity warming cabinets for blankets, robes, towels and clothing. Convenience-based bedroom trends include a laundry room off of the master suite, remotecontrolled window treatments and voice controlled lighting and electronics, making your mature boudoir much more magical than your childhood bedroom. The greater outdoors No-mow lawns have sprouted up as a time-, water-, fuel- and moneysaving alternative to the traditional lawn. These lawns have been around
for over a decade in parks and other public spaces. Now they’re catching on with homeowners - particularly with the growing population of secondhomeowners who don’t want to spend their precious getaway weekends mowing the lawn. They’re also becoming popular with mature adults who are simply tired of the rigors and high cost of constant lawn upkeep. For homeowners in colder climates who are tired of the hassles and hazards of snow removal, driveway heating systems are an ideal amenity. Radiant driveway heating systems provide heat similar to indoor in-floor heating systems. Heat is delivered with either electric cable (electric systems) or by hot water pumped through plastic tubing (hydronic systems) compacted in the surface. Most driveway heating systems have
automatic smart sensors that turn the systems on when it begins to snow, providing great consistency and reliability for snow removal, whether you’re home or not. And, with safety always a concern - both indoors and out - driveway heating systems are not only convenient; these systems are potentially lifesavers, helping prevent heart attacks, frostbite and back pain commonly associated with snow removal. Driveway heating also helps reduce injuries due to slips and falls, and possibly liability due to such accidents. Regardless of the size of your home, whether you build new or buy used, filling your empty nest with hot amenities will help to make your golden years as good as gold. For more information about Moen Home Care bath safety products, visit www.moen.com.
This is a Hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Locating source of toilet leak Q: The other day I noticed a small puddle of water at the base of the toilet. I wiped it up, only to notice the next day that the puddle was back. It’s clean water so I think it’s a leak from the tank, but I can’t find any visible drips. The tank itself tends to sweat a bit, so I can’t pinpoint where the water is coming from. Should I call in a plumber? — Christine H., Toledo, Ohio A: Try a few more things to try and pinpoint the source of the problem. Visually check the tank and the bowl for cracks — most toilets are pretty sturdy, so it’s unusual for them to crack for no reason, but do check. The tank is more likely to crack, and if so, it needs to be completely replaced. At least it’s easier than replacing the bowl. If you don’t find a crack, check the shutoff valve (usually what looks like a faucet handle jutting from the wall below and behind the toilet) and its attached inlet tube for leaks. Flush the toilet so that the tank begins filling, and observe the inlet components. You
may also need to run your hand along the valve, inlet tube and the inlet connection at the bottom of the tank, checking if any water is leaking and running down the inlet tube or the back of the toilet, out of sight. Next, test for a silent leak to confirm whether the leak is happening in the tank or not. Take the tank top off. Flush the toilet and let the tank refill completely. Then, take a crayon or wax pencil and mark the high-water point with a small line. Walk away for 10 minutes, come back and see if the water is still at that point or has gone down. If it has fallen below the line, mark the new water point and leave it for another 10 minutes. Check again to see if the water level continues to fall. If the tank is leaking, check some possible sources of the leak. First, make sure the flapper valve at the bottom of the tank is completely closed. This is one of the biggest causes of a slow leak from a tank — although it doesn’t explain the water on the floor, as the water leaks through the flapper valve into the toi-
let bowl. Next, check the seal at the base of the flush assembly, and any other visible seal, for deterioration. Finally, consider that small amount of condensation on the tank. Could it be the cause of the puddle? Try insulating the interior of the tank, or sliding a tank cover over the outside (both available at home improvement stores) to reduce the condensation. Once you’ve eliminated all the smaller reasons for the puddle of water on the floor, it’s time to look at a more serious possibility: that the seal between the base of the toilet and the floor has begun to fail. It’s not a particularly difficult or time-consuming repair, but the toilet will have to be lifted off the base in order for the wax ring, which acts as the main sealant, to be replaced. If you don’t have much experience with toilet repairs, this is where a plumber would come in. HOME TIP: To keep the seals and other parts of a flush assembly in top shape for years, avoid placing a bleach-based toilet cleaner cake in the tank. Bleach can corrode the assembly components. To Your Good Health by Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Is it a migraine? Dear Dr. Donohue: I have had headaches since I was 12. I am now 32. I hear people talk about their migraine headaches and wonder if I might have them. What makes a headache a migraine headache? I take aspirin for my headaches. It helps, but not all that much. Are there special medicines for migraines? — K.D. Answer: Yes, there are special migraine medicines, so it is important to determine if your headaches are true migraine headaches. Some of the distinguishing attributes of migraines
are the following: They begin before age 40. More women have them than men. The headache starts out with minor pain but often progresses to intense and incapacitating pain. The word used to describe it is “throbbing.” Nausea and vomiting frequently accompany it. In a little more than half of migraine patients, the headache is on one side only. Bright lights and noise intensify the pain. Sufferers try to find a dark, quiet room where they can lie down until the headache goes, and that can take four to 72 hours. Migraine sufferers can identify triggers that bring on their headaches.
Stress, missing a meal, too much or too little sleep, menstrual periods, bright lights, certain odors like cigarette smoke or perfume and fatigue are some of the things that start a migraine. Alcohol — beer and red wine in particular — chocolate, some cheeses and cured meats like hot dogs, sausage and bacon are triggers for some. Aspirin, Tylenol, Midrin and naproxen alleviate mild migraines. Cafergot is a migraine standby. A group of newer drugs are especially good for migraine sufferers. Seven of them are available. Some names are Imitrex, Maxalt and Zomig.
Imitrex comes as a nasal spray and as an injection, administered like insulin. Zomig also comes as a nasal spray. This is a godsend for those who become sick to the stomach along with the headache. Not all migraine headaches produce all the signs and symptoms I mentioned, but if you have more than two of these characteristic symptoms, it’s a good bet that you suffer from migraines. Dear Dr. Donohue: Many of my friends take aspirin for the prevention of a heart attack or stroke. I decided I should join them. Is this a wise move? — K.H.
Answer: Aspirin and similar drugs are the rule for prevention of heart attacks and certain strokes. The aspirin dose in greatest use is 81 mg — low-dose aspirin. Three different regimens for the prevention of stroke are acceptable: Plavix, aspirin or aspirin combined with sustained-release dipyridamole. The aspirindipyridamole combination comes in one tablet called Aggrenox. Note that these are for prevention of second heart attacks and strokes. For the prevention of a first heart attack or stroke, patients should consult their doctor, who
will evaluate each patient’s risk. Based on that, the doctor will recommend a regimen that’s appropriate. It’s not a good idea to self-medicate with any medicine. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

SCHENECTADY, NY — The Upper Union Street Business Improvement District (BID) has named the recipients of its two annual $500 scholarships. They are Bridget LeMon, Niskayuna High School, and Cyierra Roldan, Schenectady High School. The BID’s scholarship is offered to one Schenectady High School and one Niskayuna High School graduating senior planning on attending a 2 or 4 year college with a focus of study on business. All candidates must possess a GPA of 3.0 or above and write an essay on “How local businesses can im-
pact a community.” In her application essay, Bridget LeMon wrote, “An independent locally owned business is like having a ruby in a handful of stones.” She continued her thought, “Often local businesses consider a smaller demographic and try to incorporate green practices and sustainability … adding to the individuality of the town.” Bridget will be attending Bentley University and plans to study marketing and public relations. Upper Union Street BID Board Member and one of the founders of the scholarship initiative, Kim Mastroian-

ni, presented Bridget LeMon with her award. Cyierra Roldan was accepted to Colgate University this past December as an “Early Decision” applicant. She will participate in Colgate’s Summer Institute this summer. Cyierra aspires to be a primary care physician in her own private practice. Her essay shared her comprehensive understanding of the joys and risks of entrepreneurship, especially in such a difficult field as medicine. “I need to learn aspects of the business field,” she wrote, “to own my own successful private practice.” Christopher DiCocco, the chair of the Upper Union Street BID Board, presented Cyierra Roldan with her award. Bridget LeMon carries a 3.7953 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is a Scholar Athlete and lettered in volleyball for three years. She has earned honors in Accelerated and Honors Spanish and Latin. Her community service has included the Regional Food Bank, tutoring in Spanish, Making Strides to Walk to Cure Breast Cancer, and Habitat for Humanity. Cyierra Roldan carries a 3.81 GPA and ranks 14th in a class of 623 students. She volunteers as a special education intern and has devoted 135 hours to this initiative. She is very active in Schenectady High School’s “Best Buddies,” a program where oneon-one friendships with special educa-
tion students are developed and nurtured. She is employed at Price Chopper in Niskayuna. In her college application recommendation letter, her guidance counselor, Matt Mortier, praised her as “an absolutely wonderful young lady who is extremely polite, articulate, outgoing, bright, friendly and with a great vision for her future.” Upper Union Street BID Board members, Peter Musler, owner of Musler’s Fine Women’s Wear and Kim Mastroianni of Michael’s Shoe Service cochaired the Scholarship Committee. Funding for the BID’s scholarship is raised independently of the general operating fund. Fund raising activities include fees collected from Pony Rides at the Strawberry Fest & Art Show (June 16) and at the upcoming Harvest Fest & Art Show (Oct. 13) as well as from individual contributions from BID Members. Christopher DiCocco, an accountant with DiCocco & Associates and is the chair of the Upper Union Street BID Board of Directors said, “The Upper Union BID scholars’ just get better and better each year. Both of this year’s honorees are exemplary students and community members. It is gratifying and a privilege for our organization to provide a measure of support to two fine examples of motivation and achievement. I envision both young women in future roles as business and community leaders.”

Home,, Family,, Friendss & You Donna’s Day: creative family fun by Donna Erickson Plum Buckle is easy, fresh summer recipe Bubbling sweet plums in a butter cake, often referred to as a buckle, is a tasty dessert treat to serve all summer long. It’s my go-to summer recipe not only because it uses one of my favorite seasonal fruits, the luscious and beautiful plum, but it’s also a piece of cake to make! Look for ripe plums with your family at a roadside stand or at your local grocery store. While choosing the fruit, show your kids how to gently squeeze each one to find ripe choices. The fruit should give slightly when lightly pressed between your fingers. Young kids will have fun counting up at least five for this recipe, or let them weigh 1 1/2 pounds’ worth. If there are several varieties to choose from, ask if you can taste samples. When you return home, wash the fruit and gather all the ingredients. While you wait for the butter to come to room temperature, your school-age child may grate the lemon peel, and another may grease and flour the pan while you slice the plums. Now everything will be ready to go together in a snap.
Fresh and easy plum buckle
Cake: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup (1/2 pound) butter, at room temperature 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs 1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon peel 1/3 cup milk 4 cups (about 1 1/2 pounds) unpeeled ripe plums,
pitted and sliced 1/4 inch thick Topping: 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1. Preheat oven to 325°F. 2. Mix together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg and salt in a bowl. Set aside. 3. Beat the butter and 1 cup sugar on high speed until smooth and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in grated lemon peel. 4. Stir half the flour mixture into the butter mixture. Add milk, and gently stir in remaining flour mixture just until the dry ingredients are moistened and the batter is smooth. Spoon into a buttered and floured 8inch-square baking pan. Let kids arrange plum slices, slightly overlapping them in rows or concentric circles over the batter. Sprinkle topping over slices. 5. Bake 45 minutes or until a toothpick or skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature. Top with a flag on each piece for the Fourth of July,
or with a candle or trinket for a summer birthday. Serves 10. NOTE: Firm, ripe apricots can be substituted for plums. (c) 2012 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.
Red, white and blueberry whoopie pies (NAPSA) — When it’s time to celebrate, what’s more fun than whoopie pies: Blueberry whoopie pies! Fresh delicious blueberries nestled in fluffy marshmallow crème, layered between mini-size cake rounds, make a supertasty snack or dessert. This controlled-portion treat has a fat-free filling and the great benefits of nature’s little blue dynamos. What’s more, making these little gems yourself is easier than you might think when you start with a red velvet cake mix. Let the children help spread the crème on the cakes and top it off with plenty of fresh blueberries before sandwiching them all together.
Red, White And Blueberry Whoopie Pies - Mini Size 1 red velvet cake mix (18.25 ounces) 1/4 cup flour 1/2 cup water 1/3 cup vegetable oil 3 large eggs 1 1/2 cups marshmallow crème from a jar 1 cup fresh blueberries Heat oven to 350° F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, flour, water, oil and eggs. With an electric mixer, beat at medium speed until smooth, 23 minutes. Scoop the batter by rounded tablespoons onto prepared baking sheets, 2 inches apart, to make 24 small cakes. Bake until puffed, 8-10 minutes. Let cool 2 minutes on the baking sheets. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. With a small spatula or knife, spread 1 1/2 teaspoons marshmallow crème onto the flat side of each cookie. Divide blueberries onto 12 of the cookies. Top with remaining cookies to make sandwiches. Serve immediately or store chilled in an airtight container, layered between sheets of waxed paper. Yield: 12 whoopie pies Per portion: 302 calories, 47 g carbohydrate, 12 g total fat, 3 g saturated fat For further facts about blueberries and loads of great recipes, go to www.littlebluedynamos.com.

Home,, Family,, Friendss & You The Kitchen Diva by Angela Shelf Medearis Invite some veggies to your cookout Hotter temperatures and longer days mean grilling season is here. This summer, why not move over the hamburgers, steaks, brats and hot dogs, and make room for fruits and vegetables? Grilling provides another opportunity to prepare healthy fruits and vegetables in a quick and different way. Many people think everything tastes better on the grill, which can hold true for fruits and vegetables. Don’t like eggplant, zucchini or asparagus? Try it grilled! Better yet, why not Moroccan-Style Grilled Vegetables like the recipe below? Taste is not the only benefit of grilling. Vegetables and fruit cook so quickly on the grill that they retain much of their vitamin and nutrient content.
It is best to have the grill warm, but not as hot as you would for grilling meat. Lightly brush the vegetables with olive oil and put directly on the grill, turning until tender. Try larger hunks, like a half a green pepper, large slices of squash or portabella mushroom caps, which are large enough to sit on the grates without falling through. A grill basket, aluminum foil pan or kabobs also can be used. If you prefer steamed veggies, wrap the vegetables in aluminum foil with a little olive oil and your favorite marinade or spices. Seal and place on the grill, turning occasionally, for 10 to 12 minutes or until veggies are tender. Experiment with different spices, marinades and sauces when preparing fruits and vegetables. Don’t be afraid to try out various flavors. Store-bought
mixes and marinades can have extra sodium, sugar and calories compared to a specialized homemade version. Balsamic vinegar or other flavored vinegars are great for drizzling over grilled vegetables or using in a marinade. Let’s not forget about dessert — fruits on the grill make a sweet treat. Firmer fruits like apples, pears and pineapple are perfect for grilling. Fruits like peaches and mangoes also can be delicious, but need to be monitored more closely to prevent overcooking, which causes them to be mushy. Try cutting a fresh peach in half, removing the pit, brushing lightly with olive oil and grilling for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Sprinkle with cinnamon and add a dollop of light whipped topping or low-fat frozen yogurt for a yummy treat. In addition, remember to always practice safe grilling techniques and food safety when preparing any food. The next time you plan to fire up the grill, remember to invite some vegetables and fruits to the party. Try this flavorful recipe for Moroccan-style Grilled Vegetables at your next family or holiday gathering!

Add vegetables and fruit to marinade in bowl or use a large resealable bag and pour in marinade and add fruit and vegetables. Mix well to coat all the ingredients. Let the ingredients marinate at least 10 minutes and up to 1 hour before skewering. 4. Thread vegetables and pineapple onto soaked skewers. Wrap ends of wooden skewers with foil to prevent burning. Lightly coat both sides of the vegetables with nonstick spray. 5. Using long-handled tongs, moisten a paper towel with cooking oil spray. Lightly coat grill rack with oil-soaked paper towel to prevent sticking. Lay skewers on grate with the vegetables over the hot side, and foil-covered handles over the cooler side. Grill vegetables, covered, over medium heat, until vegetables are cooked and lightly charred, about 4 minutes. Turn, baste with any remaining marinade, and grill 4 to 5 minutes more, or until vegetables are tender, turning frequently. Serves 4 to 6 (3 to 4 skewers per person) (Additional information from Kelli Wilmes, MS, RD, LD, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist, Nodaway County, University of Missouri Extension.)
