August arrives every year, and except for the often-oppressive heat that can occur in August throughout the world, few people may give thought to the other notable facts about this month. * Although August is now the eighth month of the calendar year, it was actually the sixth month in the early Roman calendar. * August was named after Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus, the greatnephew of Julius Caesar. He became the first emperor of the Roman Empire. "Augustus" means "the revered one." * August has two birthstones. Peridot, green in color, is the one that is commonly known. Peridot is one of the
oldest-known gemstones. The other is Sardonyx, a gem with white and brown bands that was once believed to have mystical powers. * August also has two official flowers: the poppy and gladiolus. * The state of Colorado became the 38th state in the United States on August 1, 1878. * Francis Scott Key, the author of "The Star Spangled Banner," was born on August 1, 1779. * In addition to Key, other notables born in August include Annie Oakley, Meriwether Lewis, Benjamin Harrison, Orville Wright, and Leonard Bernstein. * The 19th Ammendment to the U.S.
Constitution, which gave women the right to vote, was proclaimed on August 26, 1920. * Great Britain provided for the end of slavery in its colonies on August 28, 1833. * Two zodiac signs fall within the month of August: Leo and Virgo. A Leo is very cheerful and uplifting and will be anxious to help anyone who is having a hard time. Leo's often like to shine in the spotlight. A Virgo is often reserved and shy. Virgos like to serve others, but tend to prefer individuals to large groups. * The month of August is often referred to as the Dog Days of Summer, which are the most sultry days of the
season. "Dog Days" refers not to pet dogs, but to Sirius, the dog star that rose just before or at the same time as sunrise in ancient Roman times.

Hamburgers are a beloved food, particularly during grilling season. Trivia database KGB Answers states that 13 billion hamburgers are consumed worldwide every year. That's 35,616,438 burgers eaten each day. As people around the globe munch on savory ground beef and their preferred toppings and condiments, many people have wondered just why a hamburger is called a hamburger. After all, there is no ham in it. A hamburger is a cooked ground patty, typically made out of beef, though different meats have been substituted in recent years. Still, most people will not
find ground ham in their hamburger. The name "hamburger" comes from where the first hamburger was created. The hamburger originated in Hamburg, Germany. Historians surmise it was based on minced beef specialties that first appeared around different regions of Europe as early as the 15th century. Germans devised a dish called the Hamburg Steak. It consisted of a simply flavored, shredded, lowgrade beef with regional spices. The dish was eaten both raw and cooked. As Germans began to emigrate to America, restauranteurs and street vendors in New York City and other
popular port cities began offering a beef dish cooked in the "Hamburg style," to attract German patrons. Eventually, the beef of the Hamburg steak was served between buns to make it more portable, most notably at county fairs across America. Different people are credited with creating the first official hamburger, including Frank and Charles Menches, who were vendors at the Erie County Fair in New York. The vendors reportedly used beef for sandwiches when they ran out of sausage. Others credit Charlie Nagreen, known as "Hamburger Charlie," with the invention of the hamburger.
Origins of Ketchup Hamburgers seem naked without ketchup, which remains one of the most popular condiments for hamburgers and french fries. Nearly every American household has a bottle of ketchup stashed in its cupboard or refrigerator. The origins of ketchup can be traced back to the 1600s when many cultures used pickling brine as dipping sauces for foods. Affluent classes in Great Britain used rich brines from pickled walnuts and mushrooms and referred to them as catsup. Any sauce made with a vinegar base was known as catsup or ketchup. Americans eventually began experimenting with catsup recipes, targeting the country's taste for
He made sandwiches out of meatballs that he was selling at the 1885 Seymour, Wisconsin Fair, so that customers could eat them while walking. The Seymour Community Historical Society said that 15-year-old Nagreen named the dish a "hamburger" after the Hamburg steak. There are other reports attributing the hamburger's invention to other people, so the history remains fuzzy with respect to this popular food. Regardless of where, when and by whom it was invented, the hamburger has maintained its popularity into the 21st century. sweet foods. In the mid-nineteenth century, the tomato-based variety that is popular today was created. The name ketchup is often traced back to Malaysian and Chinese cultures who were the first to use a tart, briny condiment they called "kichap" or "ke-tsiap" or "ketjap."

Dear God, Someone has done some research on; “How to stay safe in the world today”. I thought it might be something that everyone would enjoy reading. I know how important it is to regularly talk to You and have my faith strengthened each day, but when I came across this explanation of “safety”, I got a kick out of it. I hope other will not only find it humorous but also see the seriousness in it. My desire is to be all that I can be in my spiritual walk with You. Love Ya Dad, Aaron “How to stay safe in the world today” 1. Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20 percent of all fatal accidents. 2. Do not stay at home because 17 percent of all accidents occur in the home. 3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks; due to the fact that 14 percent of all accidents occur to pedestrians. 4. Avoid traveling by air, rail or water because 16 percent of all accidents involve these forms of transportation. 5. Of the remaining 33 percent; 32 percent of all deaths occur in Hospitals. Above all else, avoid hospitals. You will be pleased to learn that only .001 percent of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at church! Bible study is safe too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less. FOR SAFETY’S SAKE — Attend church and read your Bible….IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Sparklers aren't as safe as they seem Parents go above and beyond to keep their children safe, especially from burns or fire hazards. They'll put locks and guards on ovens, check the temperature of bath water, push hot drinks to the center of the table so they cannot be tipped over and blow on hot food to cool it down. However, even the most protecting of parents might be unwittingly putting kids at risk during the summer holidays, when children often play with sparklers. Most people think that sparklers are the safest fireworks around. After all, they aren't propelled into the sky at high speeds. Sparklers do, however, burn at temperatures between 1,100 F and 1,500 F. That's three to five times hotter than the oven temperature required to cook many meals. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security states that sparklers are third only to bottle rockets and firecrackers as the firework most likely
to cause injury to children ages 5 to 14. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that 45 percent of all fireworkrelated injuries occurs to children under age 15, while estimates suggest that 57 percent of the firework-related injuries suffered by children under the age of 5 are caused by sparklers. Due to safety concerns, Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island banned all fireworks as of 2005. That ban includes sparklers. If sparklers are legal where you live and you plan to include them in festivities, there are certain precautions to take. * Always supervise children with sparklers. * Don't give sparklers to very young children. Substitute much safer glow sticks instead. * Have a water bucket handy or a pail of sand where extinguished sparkler sticks can be placed. * Make sure any
sparkler users are aware that wood and metal sparkler sticks can remain hot for some time, even after the burning has ceased. A New Threat As if the dangers of individual sparklers were not enough, some people are taking even bigger risks. Spurred on by online videos and step-bystep building instructions, individuals are turning ordinary sparklers into sparkler bombs. These homemade explosives are created by binding 300 sparklers together with electrical tape and using one sparkler as a fuse. Sparkler bombs are being used to blow up everything from garbage cans to mailboxes. Sparklers are made from a pyrotechnic material and iron fillings pasted on a stick. When lit individually, the sparkler simply burns for a few seconds and fizzles out. However, when bound together, multiple sparklers produce a lot of heat and energy that
has no free place to go. As a result the energy produces an explosion. Fireworks are relatively inexpensive and, as a result, they're easily accessible to teenagers. Sparkler bombs can use more than 50 milligrams of flash powder, which is illegal under regulations established by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The ATF also warns that sparkler bombs can ignite simply through fric-
tion or excessive heat. As of May 2012, there were about 2,630 video search results on YouTube.com for "sparkler bombs." Some towns across the country have found the problem to be an epidemic. In July 2009, a 15-year-old South Carolina boy lost his right hand and experienced extensive injuries to both his legs when trying to extinguish a sparkler bomb a friend had made. Police
on the scene said the sparkler bomb also created a 3-foot by 3-foot by 1-foot crater in the ground. Manipulating fireworks of any kind is a felony in most areas. Not only does a person risk serious injury, he or she also risks a fine or jail time. Sparklers may seem to be relatively safe, but as with any incendiary device, they can cause serious injuries.

Tips for newcomers to the game of golf Few hobbies can be as enjoyable one moment and as frustrating the next as golf. Golfers know a great putt can be quickly followed by a bad tee shot, and maintaining their composure through the highs and lows of the game is a key to success on the links. Maintaining that composure isn't always easy, even for the professionals. It's even more difficult for beginners, who quickly learn the game of golf involves more than just spending sunny weekend afternoons on pristine golf courses. In fact, golf can be quite demanding, and beginners would be wise to heed a few tips before hitting the course. * Don't commit to an expensive set of clubs right off the bat. Golf clubs can
be very expensive, so beginners should buy an affordable secondhand set of clubs so they can get the hang of what they like before spending a lot of money. Visit a pro shop and explain that you are just a beginner. The shop will likely make some valuable suggestions and might even let you try out a pair of clubs. In addition, many driving ranges allow customers to rent clubs, and this can be a great and inexpensive way to find the right clubs for you. * Take lessons. Even the very best at self-teaching might find it extremely difficult to become a self-taught golfer. When first trying your hand at golf, take some lessons and don't expect to be playing 18 holes any time soon. Be-
fore hitting the course, where you might be discouraged and you might frustrate those golfing behind you, learn the fundamentals by taking a few lessons at the driving range. Learn from a professional, who won't offer you any hidden secrets to golfing glory (there aren't any) but will offer sound advice on the game's fundamentals. * Take the game home with you. Beginners can even take advantage of golf's vast popularity by taking the game home with them. This doesn't mean building a putting green in your backyard. Rather, purchase some instructional DVDs to learn the game during your down time throughout the week. Many golfers don't have time to hit the links during the week, but they do have time to watch some DVDs
when they get home from work. Such instructional DVDs can help you master your grip and stance, which you can then take with you to the course over the weekend. * Have fun. Golf is a fun game; it just takes time to hone your skills. But even if you aren't ready for the professional tour after your first few rounds, you can still have fun. Don't let some beginner's frustration, which every golfer experiences, ruin the fun of the game. Take note of your surroundings when you hit the links, and appreciate the time you're spending with your group. If the game becomes more a source of frustration than fun, then take a break and put in some more work away from the course, be it at the driving range or studying at home.

Home,, Family,, Friendss & You The Kitchen Diva by Angela Shelf Medearis Grill a summer pizza If you love fresh vegetables and adore pizza, why not combine them on the grill? The best part is that you can change this recipe and use whatever vegetables you have on hand. This pizza is so good you might want to devour the whole thing! Although traditional Neapolitan pizza dough is made only with flour, yeast, salt and oil, the recipe below has an American twist. This unique recipe uses bread flour for strength, all-purpose flour for tenderness and cornmeal for flavor and texture. It makes a delicious, slightly crunchy dough for any pizza recipe, but especially for vegetable toppings. If you don’t want to make your own pizza dough, you can purchase commercially made dough, dust your board with some cornmeal and then roll out the dough so that the bottom will be coated with cornmeal to give it a similar crisp texture. You can use any combination of the vegetables below on your pizza.
Summer vegetable pizza 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 medium zucchini, cut lengthwise into 1/4-inchthick slices 1 medium yellow squash, cut lengthwise into 1/4inch-thick slices 1 large bell pepper, stem and seeds removed and cut in half 1 large purple Globe eggplant, stem removed and cut into rounds
1 large Portabello mushroom or 4 small mushrooms, wiped free of debris, stem trimmed or removed 3 plum tomatoes, cut in half 6 green onions, root ends removed 4 pieces of asparagus, stems trimmed Cooking oil spray 1 (12-inch) pizza crust or packaged pizza crust (see recipe and tips below) 1/4 cup (1 ounce) finely grated pecorino Romano cheese 2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh oregano 1. Prepare a medium-hot fire using charcoal or gas grill. Meanwhile, using a large bowl, soak the vegetables in cold water for about 30 minutes before you grill them to keep them from drying out. Drain and pat vegetables dry. 2. Combine oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, pepper flakes, zucchini, yellow squash, bell pepper, eggplant, mushrooms, tomatoes, green onions and asparagus in the bowl, tossing gently to coat. Place vegetable mixture on grill rack coated with cooking spray. Grill 2 minutes on each side or until tender. 3. Lightly coat pizza crust with cooking spray; grill 1 minute on each side or until lightly toasted. Arrange vegetable mixture over crust. Sprinkle with pecorino Romano cheese. Grill 5 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Remove from grill; sprinkle with basil and oregano.
Cornmeal pizza dough Pizza dough doesn’t freeze very well, although it can be made one day ahead, allowed to partially rise, then refrigerated overnight for use the following day, or even punched down again and kept chilled for use the second day. Allow the dough to come to room temperature before rolling or stretching into a circle or tongue shape. 1/2 pound (2 cups minus 2 tablespoons)
stock.xchg photo unbleached all-purpose flour 1/2 pound (2 cups) unbleached bread flour 1/4 pound (3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons) stoneground yellow cornmeal 2 teaspoons fine sea salt 1/2 cup lukewarm water 1 tablespoon honey 1 (1/4-ounce) package (21/2 teaspoons) active dry yeast 3/4 cup lukewarm milk 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: all-purpose flour, bread flour, cornmeal and salt. 2. In the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whisk together water, honey and yeast, and allow mixture to proof for 10 minutes or until bubbling. Beat in milk and oil. Beat in flour mixture, then switch to dough hook and beat on low speed for about 10 minutes, or until dough is smooth and elastic. The finished pizza dough should be soft and slightly sticky: You should be able to press a finger into the dough and pull it away cleanly after it sticks briefly. 3. Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl, turning it so all the dough is coated with oil. Cover with plastic film and set aside in a warm place. Allow dough to rise at warm room temperature until doubled in volume, about 1 hour. 4. Divide dough into 2 or 3 portions and form into smooth rounds. Roll out or stretch out by hand into desired size: 12 to 14 inches is common. Makes 2 pounds of dough, enough for 2 large or 3 smaller pizzas.
