by Katie Ranno During the weekend of Aug. 11, the town of Little Falls joined together to take part in the annual Canal Days celebration, which stretched from the main part of Little Falls all the way to the other side of the canal. Residents of Little Falls, such as Esther Haughton, said that Canal Days has become a yearly tradition for them. “I go [to Canal Days] to meet with old friends and see the vendors,” she commented. Vendors in the main part of Little Falls varied in goods, from homemade popcorn all the way to homemade air fresheners. Staple organizations of Little Falls also made an appearance at the event. The First Baptist Church of Little Falls set up their first booth at the event, giving away free cheese and water bottles to those that passed by. A representative from First Baptist said, “[Having a booth at Canal Days] is

a good way to reach the community and promote the church’s ministry overall.” On the other side of the canal, at the hidden, scenic gem known as Canal Place, another facet of the Canal Days celebration was taking place, known as Chicks Along the Mohawk. Chicks Along the Mohawk is a juried craft show just for female entrepreneurs. First time Chicks Along the Mohawk vendor,

Vendors sold goods that ranged from jewelry all the way to cupcakes, maple cotton candy, and uniquely shaped soaps. Other activities during Canal Days included live music and hot food vendors.

Within every “Hello Again” we attempt to inform, amuse, and share a little Irish blarney.

About 50 years ago, the homes from Clinton, NY to Hamilton, NY received their first issue of a Pennysaver. Forty-seven years ago, the Lee family said “Hello” to the Mohawk Valley with the valley’s first issue of a Pennysaver. Now, 47 to 50 years later, the same Lee family is saying “Hello” to Herkimer County and parts of Oneida County with the first issue of “The Original Family Pennysaver.” For many years Herkimer Country residents were blessed with a fine weekly publication, the Valley Home News. When this paper ceased publication, the absence of the weekly Valley Home News left a noticeable void in local merchants’ and individuals’ ability to advertise. Most Herkimer County homes who chose not to subscribe or purchase a local newspaper were without a publication to advertise in. Merchant advertisers no longer had a convenient, inexpensive way to reach that large group of non-subscribers. Numerous surveys have shown that approximately 21% of country homes do receive a subscribed paper. Which also indicates about 79% do not. Experience has taught us to believe now more than ever merchants, residents, and professionals need or require a dependable results-producing local weekly paper to convey their message. We promise and will attempt to publish a paper you will enjoy. The content will be folksy and down-to-earth. A publication you can trust in your family way of life. Whenever and always, we will support the United States. Sometimes in support of an issue, others in a critical way. We believe in God and our right to believe and live with our faith and will always defend our representative, capitalist form of economy and government. We trust our readers will enjoy the folksy down-toearth combination of local advertising, both display and reader ads (non-classified line ads) and other justgood-reading materials.

This is what Mr. Webster has to say for capitalism: The economic system in which all or most of the means of production and distribution, as land, factories, railroads, etc. are privately owned and operated for profit, under fully competitive conditions. Later I went back to Mr. Webster to learn what he had to say about socialism. In Mr. Webster’s words: Socialism: an economic theory or system of the reconstruction of society on the basis of cooperation of labor and community of property. (End of Webster’s quote.)

The controlling members of our government, the White House, and Senate are obviously attempting to ditch our means of government and enterprise away from capitalism, reducing this greatest country on the face of the earth into socialism. They preach and teach big government. In a capitalistic society individual people— citizens, and even those from foreign countries, can invest their own or borrowed dollars (capital) to start, buy, own in total or part, and personally manage their privately owned and controlled business. It remains as an asset of actual persons and not the government. Now turn to page 1 in Fred’s book of wisdom and you will read a country boy’s boiled-down definition of capitalism and capitalists. The good old-fashioned way this great nation of the United States of America was built with. Not socialism, as some are trying to change our nation into. Socialism is one step before communism. If they win, we will be kissin’ cousins to Cuba, Russia, China, and a few more failing societies—oh yeah—Denmark too. Be happy, say hi to your neighbors, a wonderful way to meet new friends is in church, as the old saying goes, “Why not try it? Veterans Post by Freddy Groves Rural Cemeteries Veterans in very rural areas have had little opportunity to arrange for burial in a national or state veterans cemetery. The Department of Veterans Affairs operates 131 national cemeteries, but they're in areas of high population. Current requirements say that there must be 80,000 veterans living within 75 miles for a cemetery to come under the auspices of the National Cemetery System.

Now, because of the Rural Initiative, eight areas will have local cemeteries established as National Veterans Burial Grounds. The new requirements are that there are no more than 25,000 veterans within 75 miles and that they have no reasonable access to a national or state veterans cemetery. The eight new locations are Fargo, ND.; Rhinelander, WI; Cheyenne, WY; Laurel, MT; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Cedar City, Utah; Calais, Maine; and Elko,

NV. This opens up burial options for 136,000 veterans and their eligible dependents. The new designations means that a portion, three to five acres, of existing local cemeteries will come under the care of the National Cemetery System and be brought up to the national shrine standards of the larger cemeteries. Besides making it easier on families to have a local cemetery, there are additional benefits to burial in a National Cemetery, no matter

its size: The headstone, marker and burial plot are free. Eligibility requirements for burial in a National Veterans Cemetery are lengthy and complicated, but at the top of the list are: Discharge under conditions other than dishonorable, or a service member who dies while on active duty. The specifics can be found at the VA's National Cemetery site [www.cem.va.gov]. To ascertain eligibility for burial in a National Cemetery, call the scheduling office at 1-800-

This inexpensive piece of equipment can stop toilets from overflowing and unblock sinks and shower drains without doing damage to

the pipes. When choosing a plunger, go for a basic “force cup” model (this is the classic plunger with a simple bell), which works best on sinks and drains. If you want something a little more powerful for toilet clogs, pick up a second plunger with a center cone, which can increase the vacuum when plunging toilets. These don’t fit sink drains very well, though. It’s also good to keep a few more tools around for other plumbing-related work. So add these to your plumbing toolkit: • An adjustable wrench and/or channel-locking pliers, which can fit varying widths of pipe. • Flat-head and Phillips-head screwdrivers. • An “offset” screwdriver to help you reach screws at weird angles. • Spare washers, orings and screws. • Electrician’s or duct tape, and plastic or rubber sheeting that can be cut to size and wrapped around a leaky pipe for a temporary repair while waiting for the handyman. • Teflon pipe tape, used to seal pipe threads. Finally, I consulted a doctor, who referred me to a gastroenterologist because he was alarmed at the length of time I'd had it. The gastroenterologist gave me a scope exam of my esophagus and

stomach. It turns out I have GERD and something called Barrett's esophagus, which turns into cancer. Naturally, I am nervous. I've never heard of heartburncaused cancer. sophageal reflux disease. Stomach acid squirts upward (refluxes) into the swallowing tube, the esophagus. The esophagus isn't built to deal with stomach acid the way the stomach is. The result is heartburn. Medicines for GERD are many. The ones most often chosen are proton-pump inhibitors, medicines that all but turn off acid production. Their names are Prevacid (lansoprazole), Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole), Nexium (esomeprazole), Protonix (pantoprazole) and Aciphex (rabeprazole). Up to 12 percent of GERD patients, even with treatment, develop Barrett's esophagus. The lining cells of the lower part of the esophagus change into ones that are more resistant to stomach acid. That change can evolve into

another transformation that is precancerous. That's called dysplasia. Dysplasia can then become cancer. The absolute risk for this is small, but it is real, and has to be carefully looked for. If the Barrett's cells show signs of low-grade dysplasia, then a follow-up scope exam of the esophagus is done in six to 12 months and repeated annually. If high-grade changes are found, the scope exam is repeated every six months. If no dysplasia changes are seen, follow-up exams are scheduled for every three years. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a senior citizen. For the past five years I have received Botox injections and wonder where the Botox goes after it leaves the injection site after about six or seven months. Does it stay in the body forever?

Is it a moth or is it a butterfly? by Tom Turpin, Professor of Entomology, Purdue University Butterflies and moths are some of the most recognizable adult insects. They are common, and many have large wings covered with scales. The scales come off easily when the insect is touched. These scales are the basis for the word Lepidoptera — literally, scale wing. Lepidoptera is also the name of the in-

sect order in which butterflies and moths are classified. Scaly wings aren’t the only characteristic that butterflies and moths have in common. Both types of insects have a mouth called a proboscis. A proboscis is a coiled tube that functions much like a party blower. The proboscis is extended to allow the insect to suck up liquids, such as nectar or water.

Moths and butterflies possess fairly large eyes, with many lenses in each eye. Both types of insects exhibit complete metamorphosis, meaning they have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Both butterfly and moth larvae are called caterpillars. Caterpillars have a well-developed head and a cylindrical body, which is made up of 13 segments. Each of the three segments behind the head has a pair of legs, just like adult insects.

But caterpillars also have some additional, fleshy, leg-like appendages — called prolegs — on other segments. Prolegs have tiny hooks at the end that function to grasp things such as the stems and leaves of plants. That is also why caterpillars can cling to your finger if you pick one up. Another characteristic of Lepidoptera that caterpillars possess is silk glands. These glands are modified salivary glands and are found in the caterpillar’s mouth. Caterpillars sometimes

Silk is also used to tie leaves together to form a shelter, as tent caterpillars do. For others, silk becomes a line on which to suspend themselves from the limb of a tree. So scales, large compound eyes, a coiled proboscis and larval forms called caterpillars are shared characteristics of Lepidoptera. But how do moths differ from butterflies? Butterflies have knobbed antennae; moths’ antennae lack a knob and are generally fuzzy. Butterflies fly during daylight and most, but not all, moths are active only at night. Bodies of butterflies tend to be slender while the bodies of moths are likely to be stout. There are some other differences between butterflies and moths as well. In general, butterflies, as a group, are brighter-colored than moths. That is because all butterflies fly during the day when colors can be seen. Moths tend to be dull-colored because they want to hide during the day, when they are not active. A few moths fly during daylight hours and, like butterflies, many of them exhibit bright colors. How living butterflies and moths hold their wings is another clue as to which is which. When at rest, butterflies position their wings straight up over their body or

Moths fold their wings back over their abdomens. Some moth caterpillars can be described as fuzzy. One such fuzzy fellow is called the woolybear caterpillar and has become famous as a predictor of winter severity. Not all moth caterpillars are fuzzy, but no butterfly caterpillars would be described as fuzzy. There are also some general differences between the pupae of butterflies and moths. Moth pupae tend to be smooth and brown in color. Butterfly pupae are often brighter colored; many are sculptured and are called chrysalids. In general, moth pupae are encased in a cocoon. But not all. Some moths, such as adults of the well-known tomato hornworms, are examples. When a hornworm caterpillar stops feeding on tomato plants, it crawls into the soil and forms a pupation chamber. Here, it transforms into a pupa without forming a cocoon. So deciding if a scalewinged insect is a moth or butterfly is not always an easy thing to do. But if it is flying during the day, has knobbed antennae and rests with wings straight up or out to the sides, it is a butterfly. If it is flying at night or is at rest with wings folded over the back, it is a moth. Otherwise, to be safe, you can always say something like, “Wow, look at that Lepidopteran!”
