Hello Again August 22, 2012 The writer of this commentary has been often accused of resorting to blarney. I believe I owe it to you to explain the difference in using blarney and telling a whopper. Back in the hills when we kids were trying to talk ourselves out of a “Why did you do it?” situation, we were challenged to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
ing a farmer relative over on the old sod, that is in Ireland, and felt poorly, your farm relative would probably suggest you need an Irish toddy. He would explain that this home-concocted cure-all was made up of a little poteen, which is homestilled Irish whisky, in this country, known as firewater or mountain dew with a little hot water and sugar, and claim it to be an old family cure-all. I’m telling you it really works after two or three of the toddies. It does not cure anything, but you don’t know you’re sick. Was it a cure-all or Irish blarney?
It was the “nothing but” part that usually caused most of the pain. Hence the following poem: Due to depression and shortage of cash, My husband decided to grow a mustache. It is long, it is short, it is brown, it is gray, In fact it is horrible in every way. Now my dear friends in a freak you delight, Come see this mustache and see what a sight. When you have seen it I am sure you will say, If he’s not crazy he’s well on his way. Dad heated up some water in the kettle and with the help of a little soap and his trusty straight razor — Mom’s problem disappeared. Do you have a problem? Try poetry, it might work. As one wit said, “Witty are you reading this? If you want to see something funny — look in the mirror.” Remember this week to say hi to your neighbor and enjoy a good belly laugh. If you can’t laugh with us then laugh at us. It will do both a world of good. If that doesn’t make you feel better, jump in your car and drive through our Lord’s beautiful Mohawk Valley with its surrounding hills — take the time to look around and you will be quickly reminded, “You live in one of the Earth’s most beautiful areas.” Take time to say good morning to the Lord and your neighbors. They were God’s gift to you. He will listen and enjoy hearing from you! Sincerely, Fred Lee and the Lee Family

EU2000i Companion
The Honda Handi™ EU3000i is designed with a unique folding handle and recessed transport wheels for greater mobility.
The EU2000i Companion offers one 30A receptacle for RV applications (requires optional adaptor) and one 20A receptacle. The 30A receptacle allows two EU2000i models to be run in parallel by way of a simple parallel cable.
EU3000is
Handi EU3000i
Honda’s advanced inverter technology provides 3000 watts of super-quiet power capable of running many types of appliances, including computers and other sensitive equipment. Can run from 7.2 to 20.0 hours on a single tank, depending on load. An excellent source of power for most 13,500 BTU RV A/C units and basic home backup.
The Handi EU3000i is the lightest and most portable 3000 watt inverter generator we’ve ever made. With its convenient flip-up handle and sturdy transport wheels, it’s easy to pack and perfect for camping, tailgating, working outdoors and, of course, home backup. Comes complete with a closable fuel vent for safer transporting and a recessed convenience light.
Please read the owner’s manual before operating your Honda Power Equipment and never use in a closed or partly enclosed area where you could be exposed to carbon monoxide. Connection of a generator to house power requires a transfer device to avoid possible injury to power company personnel. Consult a qualified electrician. Specifications subject to change without notice.

by Lee Reich for The Associated Press As it does every year, a powdery white dusting is beginning to appear on the leaves of my lilac bush. Ah, if only this coloration were desirable, if we could affectionately refer to it as a silvery flecking or a sparkling sheen. But no, it’s dull white and it’s a sign of disease, one aptly called powdery mildew. Your lilac is also probably getting powdery mildew. And if you don’t grow lilac, you may have mildew developing on the leaves of your cucumber, rose, peony or phlox. You might worry that all that powdery mildew will spread from one plant to another all over your garden. But fear not: A few different kinds of fungi cause powdery mildew, and the one that attacks lilac bushes won’t attack every other plant _ surely not your cucumber or rose plants. Unfortunately, that lilac powder mildew fungus can attack catalpa, dogwood and some other trees. The
same goes for the fungus that turns zinnia leaves white with powdery mildew; it also preys on a slew of other garden flowers. Each of the powdery mildews attacks a restricted group of plants. Know your enemy Powdery mildew, like other common names of plant diseases, describes a symptom. Other descriptive common names for diseases are scab, leaf spot and brown rot. “Anthracnose” describes a symptom not obvious from its name; plants afflicted with anthracnose have dead areas in leaves. Diseases having the same descriptive name are not necessarily all caused by the same “germs,” or even by germs related to each other. Blight of pear, for example, is caused by a bacterium, while blight of peony is caused by a fungus. The term “blight” is generally used for any disease that causes a plant or plant part to die suddenly. Descriptive names for plant diseases can get more specific. Fire blight
is the blight attacking pear, so-named because blackened leaves cling to the curled-over stems as if they have been singed. The peony affliction is called botrytis blight, “botrytis” meaning grapelike and referring to the grapelike clusters of fungal spores as seen under magnification. Look closely The common name of a disease is the first step towards finding the culprit’s true name. I don’t fear that lilac will spread blight — whoops, I mean powdery mildew — to nearby phlox or peony because lilac’s disease is caused by the fungus Microsphaera alni, while phlox’s is caused by the fungus Erysiphe cichoracearum, and peony’s powdery mildew is caused by Erysiphe polygoni. In some cases, the common name may be all that’s needed to find out how to help a plant. “Westcott’s Plant Disease Handbook” by R. Kenneth Horst is a good reference to finding both the Latin name and the cure for just about any disease
that might turn up in your garden. “The Organic Gardener’s Handbook of Natural Pest and Disease Control,” by Fern Marshall Bradley, Barbara W. Ellis and Deborah L. Martin, presents a more organic approach to weeds, with less emphasis on nomenclature. Figuring out what a disease is called makes for better gardening because it forces a close look at just what’s going on. Next time something seems amiss with a plant, note first what part or parts are affected. Then characterize the symptoms with such descriptive terms as rust, rot, dieback, canker or leaf spot. Once named, what to do? Closer inspection brings on more descriptive names — brown rot or black rot, for example — or scientific names. Look at those ugly spots on your tomato plants’ leaves: Alternaria solani marks leaves with darkbrown, round spots a half-inch in diameter, each surrounded by concentric rings. Septoria ly-
copsersici causes spots that are small, round and gray, each surrounded by a single, dark margin. The cure for both is the same: crop rotation and thorough garden cleanup in the fall. Not all diseases need attention; powdery mildew does lilac little harm. And those that re-
quire attention, such as leaf spots of tomato, can be controlled by methods other than spraying. When spraying is needed for a particular disease, it might be something as benign as baking soda, 1 tablespoon added to a gallon of water along with 2 1/2 tablespoons of cooking oil.

BUFFALO, NY — Scammers are already gearing up for this year’s Presidential election, from robocalls offering a “free cruise” for taking a political survey, to promises that President Obama will pay your bills. Better Business Bureau is advising voters to be on the lookout for the growing number of scams that are likely to continue leading up to the Presidential election. “Scammers use incentives based on what they think voters want to hear,” said Warren Clark, Better Business Bureau President. “Hot topics like health care, economic recovery and unemployment, are sure to be the alluring topics this election season, but it can be anything in the news that makes the pitch sound more realistic.” Here are just a few of the election-related scams BBB is hearing about. Don’t fall for them! There will not be a “free cruise” at the end of the voting survey. This public opinion poll scam typically involves a recorded announcement offering a “free cruise” in exchange for participating in a telephone survey. At the end of the call consumers are asked for a debit or credit card number to cover “port fees” and taxes. Consumers who hesitate or ask if they can call back in order to verify the caller’s identity are subject to high-pressure tactics, such as being told that the offer “is only good right now,” and that if they hang up they will be disqualified. Fundraising calls for political donations may not be real. Consumers have reported calls from organizations that sound legitimate, but may not really be related to either the Obama or Romney campaigns. If you aren’t sure, don’t donate over the phone. If you’d like to contribute to a political campaign or party, locate contact information yourself rather than giving out financial information to a caller. Requesting a call-
back number is no guarantee you will be connected with a legitimate campaign fundraising committee. Call or visit candidates’ websites to obtain contact information to make donation. No one will check your eligibility to vote. Your voter registration record is with your state and no one is going to call or email you to verify your eligibility. What do these callers claim they need to check? Just your credit card or Social Security number. BBB advises keep your personal data personal! President Obama is not going to pay your bills. As nice as that would be, it’s not going to happen. Consumers have been contacted through fliers, social media, text messages, and even door-todoor with claims that President Obama is providing credits or applying payments to utility and other bills. Scammers claim they need the consumers’ Social Security and bank routing numbers to arrange the payments. In return, customers are given a phony bank routing number that will supposedly pay their utility bills. In reality, there is no money, and customers believe they have paid their bills when in fact they have not. Worse, they’ve just given away everything needed for identity fraud. Don’t fall for these scams. Legitimate polling companies will never offer prizes for participating in a telephone survey, nor ask for a credit card number. Never provide your Social Security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone or at your home unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking. Do not give in to high pressure tactics, whether over the phone or in person. For more tips you can trust, visit bbb.org, and to sign up for our weekly scam alerts, visit emailsign-up.
by Seth Borenstein, AP Science Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — Our family tree may have sprouted some long-lost branches going back nearly 2 million years. A famous paleontology family has found fossils that they think confirm their theory that there are two additional prehuman species besides the one that eventually led to modern humans. A team led by Meave Leakey, daughter-in-law of famed scientist Louis Leakey, found facial bones from one creature and jawbones from two others in Kenya. That led the researchers to conclude that man’s early ancestor had plenty of human-like company from other species. These would not be Homo erectus, believed to be our direct ancestor. They would be more like very distant cousins, who when you go back even longer in time, shared an ancient common ancestor, one scientist said. But other experts in human evolution are not convinced by what they say is a leap to large con-
clusions based on limited evidence. It is the continuation of a long-running squabble in anthropology about the earliest members of our own genus, or class, called Homo — an increasingly messy family history. And much of it stems from a controversial discovery that the Leakeys made 40 years ago. In their new findings, the Leakey team says that none of their newest fossil discoveries match erectus, so they had to be from another flatfaced relatively large species with big teeth. The new specimens have “a really distinct profile” and thus they are “something very different,” said Meave Leakey, describing the study published online in Nature. What these new bones did match was an old fossil that Meave and her husband Richard helped find in 1972 that was baffling. That skull, called 1470, just did not fit with Homo erectus, the Leakeys contended. They said it was too flatfaced with a non-jutting jaw. They initially said it

was well more than 2.5 million years old in a dating mistake that was later seized upon by creationists as evidence against evolution because it indicated how scientists can make dating mistakes. It turned out to be 2 million years old. For the past 40 years, the scientific question has been whether 1470 was a freak mutation of erectus or something new. For many years, the Leakeys have maintained that the male skull known as 1470 showed that there were more than one species of ancient hominids, but other scientists said it wasn’t enough proof. The Leakeys’ new discoveries are more evidence that this earlier “enigmatic face” was a separate species, said study co-author Fred Spoor of the Max Planck Institute in Germany. The new bones were found between 2007 and 2009 about six miles away from the old site near the fossil-rich Lake Turkana region, Leakey said. So that would make two species — erectus and the one represented by 1470. But it’s not that simple. The Leakey scientific team contends that other fossils of old hominids — not those cited in their new study — don’t seem to match either erectus or 1470. They argue that the other fossils seem to have smaller heads and not just because they are female. For that reason, the Leakeys believe there were three living Homo species between 1.8 million and 2 million years ago. They would be

Homo erectus, the 1470 species, and a third branch. “Anyway you cut it there are three species,” study co-author Susan Anton, an anthropologist at New York University. “One of them is named erectus and that ultimately in our opinion is going to lead to us.” Both of the species that Meave Leakey said existed back then went extinct more than a million years ago in evolutionary dead-ends. “Human evolution is clearly not the straight line that it once was,” Spoor said. The three different species could have been living at the same time at the same place, but probably didn’t interact much, he said. Still, he said, East Africa nearly 2 million years ago “was quite a crowded place.” And making matters somewhat more confusing, the Leakeys and Spoor refused to give names to the two nonerectus species or attach them to some of the other Homo species names that are in scientific literature but still disputed. That’s because of confusion about what species belongs where, Anton said. Two likely possibilities are Homo rudolfensis _which is where 1470 and its kin seem to belong — and Homo habilis, where the other non-erectus belong, Anton said. The team said the new fossils mean sci-
entists can reclassify those categorized as nonerectus species and confirm the earlier but disputed Leakey claim. But Tim White, a prominent evolutionary biologist at the University of California Berkeley, is not buying this new species idea, nor is Milford Wolpoff, a longtime professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan. They said the Leakeys are making too big a jump from too little evidence. White said it’s similar to someone looking at the jaw of a female gym-
nast in the Olympics, the jaw of a male shot-putter, ignoring the faces in the crowd and deciding the shot-putter and gymnast have to be a different species. Eric Delson, a paleoanthropology professor at Lehman College in New York, said he buys the Leakeys’ study, but added: “There’s no question that it’s not definite.” He said it won’t convince doubters until fossils of both sexes of both nonerectus species are found. “It’s a messy time period,” Delson said.

Gladys Knight Live at The Stanley, Friday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. UTICA, NY — Valley Health Services (VHS) and The Stanley proudly present Gladys Knight in concert at The Stanley on Friday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. The event is possible through lead sponsor Excellus. Other sponsors include: Meyda Lighting, Utica First Insurance, Brown and Brown Insurance, Empire Recycling Corporation, Confidata, Nexstar Broadcasting, Roser Communications,
Estate Law Planning Center, and The Observer Dispatch. The great ones endure and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last 50 years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performanc-
es, including her time as a fan favorite on this season’s “Dancing With The Stars.” Knight, known as the “Empress of Soul,” a longtime Las Vegas resident, returned to the Strip this past year to the famed Tropicana Hotel for a special engagement that ran in the newly named Gladys Knight Theater, making her the first African- American performer to have a ven-
ue named after her in Las Vegas. And last fall she was honored with the “Legend Award” at the 2011 Soul Train Awards. As a solo artist she has won four Grammy Awards including Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal with Elton John, Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder for “That’s What Friends Are For” in 1986, and Best Gospel Choir Or Chorus Album for One
Voice in 2005. Tickets are $125, $85, $75, and $55. They can be purchased through The Stanley box office, by calling 315-724-4000 or ticketmaster charge by phone 800-745-3000, or visiting ticketmaster.com or thestanley.org. A preshow dinner at the Fort Schuyler Club and a post-show reception in the Romano Room at The Stanley are available for an additional cost of $50
per person. Tickets for the dinner are limited and will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
Collecting by Larry Cox Elvis Stamp Q: I have a 29-cent Elvis Presley postage stamp. Can you tell me where I can find how much it is worth? -- Estella, Los Lunas, NM A: Your stamp is worth 29 cents and has not increased in value since its original issue. Q: My dad had three older typewriters: two Royals and one Underwood. I think they are probably from the 1930s, since that is about the time he would have purchased them. They appear to be in working condition, but I can't find the
old ribbons for them. Can you help me? — Jeff, Sun City West, AZ A: Anthony Castillo is a collector of older typewriters and adding machines, and is considered an expert. His business, TTS Business Products, specializes in the repair of older machines. He carries the hard-to-find ribbons you are searching for. Contact him at 325 Nassau Blvd., Garden City South, NY 11530; typebar@aol.com; and www.typewritercollector.com. Incidentally, older Remington, Royal and Underwood machines are cropping up in
antique shops due to the increased interest in them. Q: I am enclosing two pictures of old ceramic ornaments that have been in our family for years. One has a small pig in a car with a purple hat, the other a small bear in the seat. — Richard, Los Angeles A These ornaments appear to be from the 1950s. Most ceramic prices of this type generally sell in the $10 to $25 range. Q: I have a 1968 Hi-Fi that needs a stylus. I have searched in my area but can't find a source and

by David Uffington Ready to Cancel Your Cable TV? Has your cable cost gone through the roof? Your options include putting together a combination of subscription choices, all of which add up to less than your current cable bill. Devices: You’ll need a device to capture the shows if you no longer have cable bringing it to your television. You’ll need high-speed Internet or Wi-Fi for the streaming, or the experience won’t be satisfactory. • Roku (four different models, from $49.99) requires only a television and a Wi-Fi connection to watch any of 500 entertainment channels, as well as free movies. • Xbox, PlayStation and Wii can all act as streaming devices.
• Boxee [www.boxee.tv] is the newest kid on the block, and works similar to Roku. Boxee Live TV is an additional HD antenna gadget ($49) that plugs into the Boxee and brings local channels to your television for no additional fee. The Boxee itself starts at $180. • HD antennas come in all prices and varieties, and some are for indoors. Check Antennas Direct online [www.antennasdirect.com] for a huge variety of antennas for all uses. Sources: Netflix and Hulu Plus are the biggest names in streaming. • Netflix has multiple levels of membership available, including DVD rental, streaming — or a combination of both. As with other services, Netflix streams through many of the popular devices.
• Hulu Plus has unlimited instant streaming for $7.99 a month, with a free week to try it out. Per the Hulu Plus website, you can watch your current shows on your iPad, iPhone, PlayStation3, Roku and television, with more devices coming. Read the FAQ carefully.

Not all shows are available on all devices, due to licensing. Be sure you know what you’re getting. • Play On [www.playon.tv/] has a wide variety of television shows, free movies and sports. View via your game console or other device, even a Kindle Fire or an iPad. The

Paw’s Corner by Sam Mazzotta Why Microchip? Dear Paw’s Corner: Last spring, as I was taking my cat "Ferris" out of my mom's car at the vet's office, he jumped out of my arms and ran into the woods. We searched the woods and surrounding neighborhoods for hours, with no luck. About a week later, we got a call from a veterinarian almost 10 miles away from where Ferris had escaped! He was found by one of the assistants, and they had quickly identified Ferris by scanning his implanted microchip. Please tell your readers how important it is to microchip their pets. It reunited us with Ferris quickly, once he was found. — Sarah in Smyrna, Ga. Dear Sarah: I'm glad to hear Ferris got home safely! Microchipping can indeed help reunite a lost pet with its owners. The biggest benefit of microchips is that if a pet loses its collar and ID tag, the microchip -- a rice grain-sized device typically implanted just under the skin between the shoulder blades -- carries that ID information as well as contact information.
Once a microchip is implanted, owners should register the chip's information at an online registry such as the nonprofit Found Animals http://microchipregistry.foundanimals.org/ or a registry recommended by your veterinarian. If your pet gets lost and is found and scanned, the information will be relayed to these registries. From there, the owner can check the registries, or opt to be alerted if their pet's chip is scanned. Microchipping is affordable, as well. Generally, even the priciest chipping costs well under $100, and it's often offered as part of low-cost vaccination clinics at a reduced price. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Store manager Adele Bustos and store clerk Sis Przelski made Corny Chili to sell to customers this in August, which was a delicious success. This was the featured “recipe of the month” which is part of the new display located in the produce section of the store. The store plans on making different “vegetable of the month” dishes to sell to customers as they become available on the display. The Creating Healthy

Donna’s Day: creative family fun
by Donna Erickson Go crazy about books at your town library Some things in life are still free — like your neighborhood library. If you haven’t dusted off your library card in awhile, put it into action this summer, step inside a local branch and be amazed by the innovative activities and services you’ll find. You’ll likely discover that frequenting your library as part of your weekly routine is a healthy habit that will keep minds of all ages sharp all summer long. Check out these “free of charge” ideas: Storytime Contact your library for dates and times when you and your preschoolers or grandkids can gather with neighbors to enjoy readings of engaging picture books. Singing, acting and crafts often are included. “Afterward, look for books based on a particular theme,” suggests Jeanne O’Grady, program librarian for Santa Cruz, CA, public libraries. “For example, choose a topic such as ‘food’ and check out a menu of fun, nutrition-related books with appetizing titles such as ‘Cucumber Soup’ by Vicki Leigh Krudwig, ‘Little Pea’ by Amy Rosenthal and ‘Rah, Rah, Radishes!: A Vegetable Chant’ by April Pulley Sayre.” Once you read one of the books, enjoy preparing a snack or meal using the book for inspiration. “Reinforce new vocabulary you have just read by narrating what you are actually doing as you prep the ingredients and eat the food,” she said. “Kids simply can’t resist the sounds of fun words like asparagus, artichoke and macaroni.” E-books The list of library e-book titles for iPads, Nook and
other readers is growing. Go online, check out your choice and download free of charge. Pre-trip prep Before you leave on vacation, find useful travel books, maps, magazines and conversational languagelearning CDs to enrich your travel experience. For long, cross-country car trips, don’t forget to check out audio books before you hit the road.
Volunteer! Inquire about volunteer opportunities at the library for your preteen or teenage children. They may be asked to assist with crafts and puppet shows, monitor summer reading programs and assist in searching for titles on the computer. Strange but true by Samantha Weaver • It was British-American poet T.S. Eliot who made the following sage observation: "Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal." • Each fingernail on the Statue of Liberty is nearly a foot long. • Filmmaker George Lucas is arguably best
known for his "Star Wars" franchise, but he also directed "American Graffiti." During the making of that earlier film, he designated each reel of film with an R before the reel's number, and each instance of dialog was prefixed with a D. At one point during the sound mixing, the sound designer needed to use
Reel 2, Dialog 2, and so asked for "R2D2." Lucas liked the sound of it so much that he used it for the name of a robot character in his later work. • You can tell a cranberry is ripe when it can be dribbled like a basketball. • Those who study such things (and seemingly have too much time on
their hands) say that a quarter has 119 grooves around the outside edge, while dimes have 118. • Have you ever heard of a woman named Thelma Pickles? Unless you're a somewhat obsessive fan of the Beatles, probably not. She was John Lennon's first girlfriend. • Among those who play
basketball professionally, the men average 6 feet, 7 inches tall, while the women average an even 6 feet. • If you're a vegetarian, you're part of the 3 percent of American adults who shun meat. In India, though, you'd be part of a much larger minority; nearly a third of the popu-
lation of that country is vegetarian. • You may be surprised to learn that the pound sign is officially known as an octothorpe. Thought for the Day: "A pessimist is a person who has listened to too many optimists." — Don Marquis (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
