ton-Otsego BOCES adult practical nursing program were laid out for incoming students during their recent orientation. The about 85 adult students who attended the orientation will either be taking the full-time program, the part-time day program or the part-time evening program. Sara Nicolette, the Herkimer BOCES adult vocational nursing programs coordinator, offered the students tips and warned them to be
ready to work hard. “You have no idea what you’re getting into — none,” Nicolette said, to the students. “But if you want it, we will get you there.” The orientation took place on Thursday, Aug. 16, at Herkimer Junior/Senior High School. Herkimer BOCES has been training practical nurses in the Mohawk Valley dating back to when the program was established in 1963.
This new group of students — along with about 40 returning students — will begin classes on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Graduates of the program become licensed practical nurses. “It presents them with opportunities to continue their education or enter the workforce,” Nicolette said. At the orientation on Friday, students received packets with information about the framework of the program and what
the expectations are for them. “It sets them up so they can be successful,” Nicolette said. Testing to be eligible for next school year’s nursing class begins on Oct. 1.
