Hello Again September 12, 2012 It’s about 6:25 Wednesday morning. I am looking out of the front window of our motor home next to the river at the St. Johnsville Marina-Campground. Sometimes the Mohawk River seems to be standing still. This morning it is heading east in a hurry. I wonder where this morning’s river water will be tonight. We know it will flow from here to the Hudson River and then south to New York City and on into the Atlantic Ocean. Maybe someday it will return to upstate New York as rain and repeat its trip east and then south, never failing to do its job. Some believe that all of this natural activity and beauty just happened all by itself, while others believe in the story—or truth—which is revealed in the book of Genesis in the bible. A book which also did not just happen. I believe God created the Mohawk River with its feeder streams, surrounded by our beautiful hills which guides the great Mohawk and streams as they wander along their way. I also choose to believe God inspired men to write his message in the book of Genesis along with his life-giving messages throughout the other books in the bible. At the point of sounding like a know-it-all, I take certain satisfaction in knowing no one can prove me wrong. Further on in the bible it says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” I do fear and can see his handy work all around. Beauty in such depth had to be created—it did not just happen. I also believe mankind was his greatest accomplishment. His word—the Bible—says we were created in God’s-image.

As well educated as our children are today, remember our generation was the first to know the name of the-man-on-the-moon: Neil Armstrong.

As the summer season comes to a close and cooler weather moves in, the last of the summertime produce will be available at our local farmers’ markets. Cabbage comes in season around the end of summer when the weather begins to cool. Once the cold autumn months begin to roll in, cabbage can be used in a variety of ways from soups and salads to main dishes. September starts our harvest season for cabbage and it is easy to get your hands on and enjoy this unique and versatile vegetable! Cabbage may not be included on everyone’s gro-

cery list, but it is versatile and nutritious. According to More Matters campaign, cabbage is probably more recognizable as sauerkraut or Cole slaw to baseball fans and picnic goers. Hundreds of varieties of cabbage are grown throughout the world, but the most common in the U.S. are green, red and Savoy. When choosing cabbage, look for solid, heavy heads with leaves full of discoloration. Cabbage should be stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Keep cabbage chilled even after cutting. After cabbage has been cut, try to use the re-

Ingredients: 2 medium apples 2 teaspoons no pulp orange juice 3 cups cabbage, shredded 1/2 cup raisins 1/4 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt Instructions: 1. Wash and core apples. 2. September is National Preparedness Month Disaster planning for those with special needs Individuals with special needs often require more detailed planning in case of an emergency. Here are some things to consider: • Have at least a three day supply of all your medications. Store all medication in one location and in their original containers. • Have a list of all your medications: name of medication, dose, frequency, and the name of the prescribing physician. • If there is a power outage, have a backup

power supply for essential medical equipment. • If you use oxygen, have an emergency supply (enough for at least three days). • If you use an electric wheelchair or scooter, keep a manual wheelchair for backup. • Teach those who may need to assist you how to operate necessary equipment. • Label and attach laminated instructions to your equipment. • If you are vision impaired, deaf, or hard of

hearing, and if you are unable to use the TV or radio, plan for someone to convey emergency information to you. • If you live in an apartment, ask management to identify and mark accessible exits and areas
